- Do you know how to use the eBay app to source better inventory, make more profit, and sell things faster? eBay's app doesn't make it easy for sellers, but using the hidden metric called STR when sourcing new inventory will help you do all three. It's called sell through rate, and I'll tell you all about, why it's important, and how to calculate it in this video.

I have been watching Resellers discuss this for some time now. This video by far, IS THE MOST PROFOUND BREAKDOWN, I've ever seen by a reseller in fully illustrating these concepts. I was literally on the edge of my chair. AND, I'm gonna rewatch again a few times. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your contribution. Your presentation is eazy on the eyes and ears, and comprehension is a breeze. Finally, you did even ask/beg for someone to hit a like button, or a subscribe. YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO, I smashed the darn thing, lol. OUTSTANDING!!
Wow, thank you so much for the kind words.
Just hate it when asked "begged" to subscribe. If l like content l will like, dont tell me to like. Then worst of all when asked to watch to end. I then immediately stop watching, unsubscribe and unlike. Rather say ITS FREE TO LIKE
Just so you know...
I totally concur regarding your answer. I was sitting her nodding in agreement the whole video through. Awesome video!
I was about to basically leave the same comment so I'll just say I agree 100%... great video.
Stage 4 for me was taking the rough average of the sold prices and applying that to the listed search as a max price. Those that make it through this filter are your true competitors.
Also, make sure to select new or used under condition. Your results will be skewed if you don’t.
Great tip!
you actually saved me, i completely forgot about the supply and demand part of selling and now that i know this ive been able to sell things way quicker and actually able to get a good price for my items. thank you
I don’t normally comment on any videos ever but man this video is one of the most organized and informative videos I’ve seen on this type of subject. Great job !
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for such a clear and accurate description. I have been working in the second stage for a long time now and your video has allowed me to move on to stage three and understand it very well. Thank you for sharing
Thanks for this...I was level 2 and part of 3 but wasnt really sure how it worked calculating in my head during shopping! Now to master Level 3
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
I can't thank you enough for this video! I 🙏 I've been selling on eBay for years but this is the first time I fully understood how to calculate the sell-through rate while sourcing. Your content is amazing - all meat and no fluff.
Your the content creator that worth to follow always, You explained clearly the topic each video you upload, You are more than a guru!
Hi there, Finally someone is showing me what I have been asking other sellers how to check comps more thoroughly!! No one ever acknowledged my request let alone show me what your short video here did. You are my new "GO To" reseller mentor. Thanks so much
Your videos have taught me a great deal You have great no BS delivery. Thank you so much.
I love your clarity on describing the process!! Thanks so very much!!
You are so welcome!
I am new to Ebay, but not to reselling. Learning this STR stuff has really been a game changer, where my other platform is concerned. Thank you for the wisdom!
Thank you so much for your video. I struggle and this is the best video with comprehension of parts of ebay operation.
First video of yours I've watched. Very informative and concise advice. I subscribed and I appreciate your sound advice.
thanks for watching!
very informative video i have watched so far. you earned a new subscriber!
Valuable information as always🎉
Hi Justin- Helpful info here and in your recent videos. I like the no-nonsense approach and your data-driven examples. Thanks. New subscriber.
thanks for watching!
Absolutely phenomenal vid. I’ve been watching a bunch of your different vids and by far the best reselling channel on yt. Like absolutely so incredible, any new resellers def watch his stuff I’ve been doing it a while
thank you!
From 1 Justin to another. Thank You!
Thank you for your information! You have the best information
Great video! This is about as good as it gets to get an idea if something will sell well. Aside from the STR calculation, I'd also like to add that matching the item condition of what you're selling (new/used) to solds can be very helpful too, something many people forget!
thanks and great point about condition. I definitely should have mentioned that in the video.
Great info and worth working the numbers before i source a new item.
Really great explanation of STR. This is a really hard concept for new resellers and you knocked it out of the park!
Thanks!
Ah! Now I understand Sell Through Rate 🙄
You explained it so well.
Yet another valuable vid from you.
Thank You
I have just subscribed and I am binge watching your vids😊
Great video, thanks man! Happy Thanksgiving!
Brilliant! Thank you! Save this TH-camr! I've been selling on eBay for almost ten years and feel I finally found someone on TH-cam who knows what he's talking about. eBay sellers - new and old will benefit from this channel. Keep up the great work! Joe from Canada.
Another on-point video, thanks!👍👍
My thoughts exactly. I almost just want to give someone a link your video when they ask me to sell for them on Ebay. Video helps people know what they're getting into good content!
Thank you for providing the value that you do! I sell on amazon and walmart, but it has been refreshing to have an introduction to ebay
thanks for watching!
Thank U for making this plain and simple!!
you’re welcome!
Excellent Information on the STR❤. Thank you.
you’re welcome!
Thank You, neverthought of it like this.
Great explanation
Thank you so much for this video and sharing your knowledge. This really helped me understand about the sell through rate. I've only been selling for about a year and MAN...I've made some bad buys when sourcing! ☹ I'm looking forward to my next sourcing adventure because I will definitely be using what I've learned in your video!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching.
First time anyone shared this tip. Thank you
My pleasure 😊
Thank you for explaining this, so carefully, wish I’d known it five years ago
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you!!!! I needed this 😊
You're welcome!
I think there is a fourth stage, where you start looking at the volume of sales. Volume analysis helps you focus on things you have a greater likelihood of finding. This is what I am trying to do more with my reselling.
Very well articulated.
thanks!
Omg.. you just changed my life. When I make a bunch of money I’m gonna come back here and tip you.. pinky swear! 💪🏼✨
gonna hold you to that!
Gold. Thank you
Thank you for this!
you’re welcome! thank you for watching
Thank you for this video , it was very informative. I learned what I needed to learn. Thumbs 👍🏼 up button hit.
only thing that matters imo is demand / sold. if the volume is high doesn't matter how many are available they are all most likely going to sell. cheers
Interesting view point, I’ll be looking into this moving forward.
thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for your info!!!!!!!!!!!
Great, Justin!
Thank you so much for this video
you're welcome!
Great info! Wish you could sort by sell through rate
3:53 Ha, the Goodwills in my town use to do this. I literally asked for the pricing person and walked them through the sold listings filter concept.
Not often that you see a thrift store doing this! How annoying.
Very helpful thanks!!
You're welcome!
Awesome, thank you so much!!
thanks for watching!
Best advice!
Thank you for sharing
Best video I watched so far in the net
Wow, thank you!
The transition music goes hard!
great info! thx
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks God bless you
Great video. I have a question so in the math use the sold listing number 1st then the listing number?
Just subscribed, you deserve more subs. Keep posting and you’ll get them, great content
Hey Jake! Appreciate it man. I’ve been watching your channel for awhile and I’m a fan. Would love to collaborate on something sometime!
@@justinresells would love to do a podcast episode with you. I’ll contact you later about it!
sounds good!
Great Job!
Thanks!
I’d love an app where you scan a barcode and it gives you the eBay str and important data. To your point, eBay is designed for buyers. This would help so much with inventory sourcing efficiency. It seems like you have an interest in developing software. Not sure if it’s up your alley, but may be worth considering. Love your content! Been doing eBay seriously (but smaller scale) for about 6 months. Hit 1k sales in 90 days recently. Thank you!
Thanks! I talk about why there aren’t many apps like that for ebay in this video: The eBay Pricing Problem, Explained
th-cam.com/video/7F7FWekaLeA/w-d-xo.html - and i am developing an app actually: flipwise.app - good work on 1k!
One of the things my dad used to mention frequently "It's only worth what someone is willing to pay you for it."
👍🏻
Thank you, i practiced this at home with random stuff 😂 i did exactly what you did with that tinkerbell toy but with google lens ..... lesson learned.😅
Great video! My calculation of sell-through is based on if I list 200 items on Jan 1 and 100 sells by Mar 31 then my sell-through should be 50% because it’s 100 Sold / 200 Available. Now looking at my phone it says 100 Active and 100 Sold which is the 100% most folks calculate. I am figuring those 100 sold were once active and should figure into calculations.
I hope you do a Terapeak video to show how to determine STR outside the 90 day app window! Has done wonders for me!
Also outside of increasing sales there is using STR to eliminate the duds in your store and death piles. Make room for the new profitable items. Resonate and move on!
Great tips, thanks for sharing!
I’ve also learned not to consider a sold price of items sold through Bids vs Buy it Now’s! Some things sell for a ridiculously low price due to the fact the auction started at 99 cents and only 1 person bid on it. LOL!
Definitely! Next week's video is related to this actually. Thank you for watching!
That’s a good point also, lo bids definitely skew prices down.
Thank you for the insight, I'm a newbie and have no experience selling on ebay, I've sold a few items here and there. I was about to list an item then checked the sold filter and found my exact item that sold for way more than I expected. I was able to use that same listing and adjusted my price! Thanks again!
Awesome! Glad I could be helpful.
That’s what I do. I copy the exact title of a sold item. It’s a lot of work but we’ll worth it
After three weeks of selling on EBay and only having 12 sells under my belt. I finally found my niche and the sold listings are a game changer for me. My goal is to try and source items that has a high STR and will resell for atleast $20 dollars or more
New to selling and have created what I thought is good inventory based upon my views, not what you detailed in your video. SOoo the next question would be what would you do if you purchased inventory that has a low STR. Do you just dump and reload using this information?
Thanks MM
What do you think is a good overall str for an eBay store?
Thank you. I was level 2. Now, I will begin level 3.
excellent! thanks for watching
Thank you for the info…I’m it sure if u actually counted the number listed/sold or is that number someone in the search u did to see the #listed? Thank you 🦋
If you gave visual examples, like a walk through step by step for a slow person like me could understand this would be great
great video 🇮🇪👍
thanks!
What would be a good STR? I plan to start by listing things i dont need in my house. One thing i looked up sold for $40 on avreage with a 38% STR. Another thing i looked at sold for about $25 with a 236% STR.
Have you ever seen the sold button not available or not even an option to choose in the filter options? Thank you for your content 😊
i’ve never experienced that! weird…
Will you make a video showing how to price the items based on the str.
I don't really price things based on STR - I only use STR when deciding whether or not to buy something to resell to understand its supply versus demand and get a rough idea of how long it will take to sell. I price things by looking at active comps and sold comps and calculating rough averages of each. I talk more about that in this video: th-cam.com/video/-O32DfKrQy0/w-d-xo.html&lc=UgwU3GOu9oYaZSn0o4N4AaABAg
I’d love to know what you think about Terrapeak Justin. I forget to use it. What are your thoughts on this tool?
Thanks for watching! I talk about Terrapeak extensively in this video: th-cam.com/video/7F7FWekaLeA/w-d-xo.html
Hi Justin, I enjoy your TH-cam videos. Very helpful. I need to ask a question or three as I am new at reselling. I bought 150+ new in the package McDonald's Happy Meal toys. All are different. I paid $40 for the lot now how should I list them as most sell for about $2-$3? Should they be in groups like Barbie, Tarzan, Mulan, Ty dolls, etc. or sell them one by one? Also, should I remove them from the original plastic wrap for photos? Look forward to your reply. Thanks Alfred
Selling 150 items worth $2-3 a piece separately is not really worth your time, so you should definitely lot them all up together.
If it were me (I probably wouldn't have bought this in the first place but if I did) I would list them all together in one big lot. You should also consider the supply and demand of these items. There are over 180,000 listed on eBay and only 13,000 sold over the last 90 days. That is a pretty poor sell through rate, so you should expect it to take a long time to sell because there is way more supply than there is demand. Of course it could sell sooner, which would be nice, but seems unlikely unless they are particularly valuable or in higher demand than the garden variety happy meal toy.
For additional context, let's say you spend 4 minutes listing each one, that is 10 hours to list all of them. At $2-3 a piece, that is a maximum of $450 when they are all sold, which will take forever (think years not months). Take out your cost of goods and that is $410, then another 13% for fees and you're down to about $350 in profit for 10 hours of listing. It'll probably take another 4 minutes of time to ship each one as well, so really 20 total hours for $350 of profit, or about $17 per hour over the course of many years to fully realize.
Justin im confused !? The formula shown is sold listing / active listing = sale through rate , but the video you said its's active listing / sold listings = sale through rate. Was that a mistake?? Thank you so much for all your knowledge, keep up the great work, love your videos!! so helpful
yeah I goofed up on this video. i made this back when I had like 12 subscribers and nobody watched my videos :)
from your experience and the way you calculate it, what is an acceptable ratio, and what % is definitely a no go?
Great question. It really depends on the particular item. If something has a low sell through rate, but very high ROI potential, I might go for it. On the other hand, I sometimes buy things with a relatively low ROI but high STR just because I know it's going to sell very quickly. It's more of an art than science, and depends on your own personal preferences. You get a feel for it over time. Thanks for watching!
When you’re looking up an item, do you use eBay’s filters to return the most specific data? For example, a shirt may sell better in one size vs another. Do things like that influence your decisions or are you usually looking generally?
STR is going to be most accurate when your search is excluding items that do not match what you have... so filtering is smart. However, the only filtering I usually do is condition - new or used. I don't bother with filtering for size or color, but may include in those in the search terms to be more specific. Thanks for watching!
Great video! If an item is at a 200% STR like the Theragun, would it be better to sell it at auction or buy it now?
Thanks for watching! I have a separate video that answers that question: Way too many eBay sellers lose money doing this
th-cam.com/video/-O32DfKrQy0/w-d-xo.html
You said 130 listings divided by 6. But it’d be the other way around, right? 6/130 for a 4% STR
Good catch! I totally goofed that up and didn't catch it until after I uploaded the video. (Math has never been my strong suit.) Either way, 4% or 22%, they are both bad sell through rates. :) Thanks for watching!
@@justinresells subscribed. Loved the marketplace hack.
Appreciate it.
Hi Justin, thank you for your informative videos. I'm wondering if you can help me with my app. It indicates that it is showing my 90 day total but it is actually my 30 day total. Where do I change this setting? Thank you!
Thanks for watching! I have no idea how that would happen or how to fix it. Sorry!
where does it show the on the page the number of active listings/ sold listings? I dont see it giving a number anywhere?
at the top under the search box
shouldn't STR = SOLD/(Active+Sold). that would give you how many sold out of how many were available to sell during that time?
Yes, good catch. Another viewer noticed my inadequate STR formula in a separate thread. While the one I shared is not the most accurate way to calculate STR, it’s still an effective (and easier to calculate in your head) method for understanding supply vs demand. Thanks for watching!
6:16 I think your math is off. 130 available with 6 sold is more like 5% STR not 22% STR.
Its not 130(available) ÷ by 6(sold), but the reverse of that 6÷130.
Try it with 100 available and 50 sold and you will see. Clearly that is a 50% sell through, but 100÷50=2. However 50÷100=.50.
Hope that helps. Really enjoying the straightforward content in your videos.
yeah a few other commenters have pointed this out already - i made an embarrassing math error! thanks for watching
@justinresells my bad, I scrolled many comments and didn't see it mentioned. Have a good day!
no worries, I appreciate you paying attention :)
I really appreciate your video! Easy to understand and straightforward delivery! Thank you!
I do have a question: when sourcing, do you go through this process with every item? Having used the eBay app myself, it can take several minutes to look at each item. Is there a one-stop app or something that gives you STR? Also, how do you quickly calculate what the average sold price is if there’s like 50+ recently sold items under your search? And I know I said one question (up to two so far), but how do you determine your comps, and how do you decide if an item is worth your time to buy and resell? Thank you! New subscriber here!
Yes I do this with most items, but I usually don't do the full calculation in my head. I mostly get a sense of the STR, if that makes sense. I look at how many active there are and then I check sold to get a sense of there are way more active than sold, way more sold than active, about the same, etc. After you do this enough you just get a feel for it without actually doing the math.
As for calculating average sold price, it's kind of the same thing. I am not actually calculating an average sold price when out sourcing, I am just getting a feel for it. I take a much closer look when I am listing so that I can more accurately price it.
@@justinresells that helps me-thank you so much!
🐐
I think you have that STR example backwards... You said 130 divided by 6 is 22%... It should be 6 divided by 130 giving you a 5% STR. Sold divided by Active = STR from you example. So that item is a big Hell No steer clear of that item.
yeah you’re right, i goofed that one up. a few other commenters called it out already. thanks for watching :)
After I package and put a label on an item where exactly do I send it? Post office, mail box, ups store? Thanks
Depends on who the carrier is! USPS, take it to the post office. UPS, take it to the UPS store. Fedex, take it to Fedex
@@justinresells does every package need to be walked in or can I put them in yhe drop box? Just wondering if im going to be expected to go in and out of the usps. Thank you.
if it fits in your mailbox you can do that. otherwise you’ll need to take it in. or you can schedule a free pickup at usps.com
How do you price buyout items.
Not sure what you mean.
I don't know how you could even find enough inventory to sell to actually make a living. I can spend 3 hours hitting 3 goodwills and the goodwill outlet and all I find is 2 pairs of shoes that might sell. And that's pretty average for me. If I do good on a day of sourcing I might get $60 profit. Obviously, I can't even do that everyday because if I go to the same stores, it's the same inventory. I do better at yard sales but I can still only find maybe $200 profit of inventory on a GOOD week. That is nowhere near enough.
Should be (sold) / (active) x 100
Thanks. I made this video back when literally no one was subscribed to my channel or watched my videos, and it is a bit embarrassing that there are a few errors in there. :)
@justinresells Still love your content, thanks for everything man!
If you have 5 thrift stores and 200 resellers then.....
Aimed STR just fine but you never said what rate is a "good" one??? 50% 60% yes 100%??????
You're right, I should have been more clear here. It's hard to say what a "good" STR is at is very subjective! For example, if you have an excellent inventory system and ample storage you may be willing to buy things that take longer to sell versus if you're in an apartment and storing all of your inventory in your bedroom where you want to turn things around more quickly. Also the potential ROI also impacts what someone might consider a good or bad STR. For example, i might buy something with a relatively poor STR if the ROI is high. Or I might be willing to go for a lower ROI if the STR is high and I know it'll sell quick. It's more of an art than a science, and something you should seek to figure out for yourself once you know how to check STR. Thanks for watching!
Not trying to be a dick, but the way you’re calculating STR is backwards. In your example if there are 6 sold and 130 listed you divide 6 by 130 and you come up with 0.046 or 4.6% after you move your decimal point over converting to percentage. Just trying to help.
Second example would be 276(sold) divided by 110(active) = 2.509 or 250%
Just make sure you’re always dividing Sold by Active. Move decimal to convert to percentage.
Yeah you’re right, a few others pointed that out. I made this video back when nobody really watched my channel and I didn’t double check my math. Embarrassing! The sentiment is still correct though. Thanks for watching!
@@justinresells Dude you know plenty don't worry about it!! Your one of those finance people that live what you talk about rather than just talking about stuff you yourself don't know!!
The sell thru rate is not the difference between the number of sold and unsold listings. Its the proportion or ratio of the two. Difference means subtraction. Great video, just obvious ya don't have a background in maths m'friend ;)
You are correct, I’ve never been great at math! But hopefully the concept still made sense 😀 thanks for watching!
I cringed hard too when I heard “difference”. I know what he was trying to say so I gave him a pass. Lol
@@hodgepodgefinds appreciate the pass :)
eBay is pay to play
If anyone that is trying to sell on eBay.. and didn’t already know about this.. shouldn’t be selling on EBay this is common sense 😂
you’d be surprised :) i didn’t always know it
6/130 is not 22%. Your text is showing sold/active (which is correct) but you keep saying active divided by sold which is incorrect. Actual sell through on that toy is 4.6%
I’m sure you know that but if you’re teaching, then I’m sure you want your information to be accurate.
Yeah I goofed that up. Embarrassing!
