Update: I just finished replacing my front leaf springs and new shock absorbers front and back. HUGE improvement in the sound to where it is hardly noticed. I am guessing the worn parts helped amplify the noise. Now I can start isolating the noise further.
It was a certainty for myself. Find an open field or road, throw it in gear and listen with no distractions. It really helps narrow down the sound if you try different variables and start testing theories. Yes these trucks get old and worn out. However, people that tell me, "that's normal" are just accepting the noise and moving on with their day. These trucks sure as hell didn't roll off the assembly line making these "normal" sounds. The rattle can 7.3 is a normal sound to me 😅.
@@HungOverSheep Yeah I know mines my clutch, recently started making that noise. I replaced the clutch back in February, it has 50,000 miles of towing on it now. My truck has 582k miles on it
Completely normal for a performance clutch... my stock clutch quiet no issues, southbend dynamax with Kevlar pilot and and flywheel, little growly without throttle on the low end just rolling along. But when I'm loaded with 20k+ she got the kung foo grip and never slips or makes a peep🤷🏼
It was the opposite for me. South bend stock clutch was the noise problem for me and then I replaced it with a South bend dual disc clutch with ceramic and the stock material and bam all fixed. That puppy grips with no slip lol.
I had 3 zf 6, all of them did it on any gear when you dont give enough gas Got my back truck today just installed a reman tranny on it after 460kmiles My first zf spent 2 months on the dealer trying to figure out that noise
Gear roll over. In 4 low ots going to be mich louder due to gears moving slower.. want to quiet it down? Change trans fluid and substitute a whole quart of lucas trans stabilizer in the fresh fluid almost eliminates the sound!, had same issue, trans with throw and shift a bit smoother also, give it a try!
Done, done, and done. Thank you for the suggestions though! I did all of this before checking on my clutch. I run redline ATF in the transmission and transfer case.
Mine doesnt make nearly as much of that noise anymore after i out in a CK4 Synchronesh MTF, the atf is just not good for a manual in my opinion, most cars and trucks use mtf, it's thicker, has better anti wear properties, clings to metal better and reduces noise and vibration. I bought 6qts of Valvoline syncromesh mtf (full synthetic) and i get slight gear rollover noise at low speed if im not giving any throttle going into gear but otherwise it doesnt make noise anymore, my truck has manual 4x4 as well w/ 190k on the original trans, clutch, etc.

Mine makes the same noise. It goes away with higher RPMs. It made the noise when I bought the truck with 200k on it and it's the same at 270k now. I recommend stop worrying about it and just drive.
It's not in my nature to stop worrying about something that is not designed to sound or function like my truck was doing haha. My truck has 300k on it now and ignoring problems won't exactly get her to 600k.

@@alexkram It very well could, keep in mind that the noise could also be transmission gear rollover. In my situation, my transmission only had a few thousand miles on it. I have to replace it with a remained.
@@armandoanaya3140 I found out it wasn't the transmission. It's the exhaust resonator. But I don't feel like ponying up 1400 bucks for the Corsa system so I'll deal with it for a while. But no, my ZF doesn't whine.
It becomes normal if you listen to it long enough or have a lot of miles on the transmission (gear rollover). Think about it, would a dealer sell a brand new f250 with a atrocious noise like think off the lot?
If you push the boot down (or sometimes pull it up), you will see two bolts holding the stick shift to the shift tower. You can almost see them in my video if you watch closely.
Did you ever figure this out? My 96 does the same thing. Brand new south bend SMF clutch. But mine does it in neutral with the clutch not in gauge. My latest video is a example of what it's doing.
I checked out your video and from my knowledge as well as lots of other research You definitely have a bad gear rollover problem. Mainly because when you let the clutch out that means the transmission is currently spinning and you have the noise while you're in neutral.
@@jake2846 Was your transmission quiet before your clutch replacement? It's definitely not "normal" if you consider that manual transmissions get worn out just like automatic transmissions. Most people just accept the noise of a ZF6 because those things are nearly bulletproof with proper maintenance. The noise is definitely not sold new from the factory 😅.
I just bought a 2004 f250 5.4triton with 79k miles and it does the same noise in low rpm , also a little rough when shifting , I saw the other video of you finding the issue . So would changing the clutch salve this ?
Awesome! I didn't have any scoring on my input shaft but the new flywheel came with a pilot bearing so I'm sure it helped. My pilot bearing also turned freely with not grinding.
@Richard Lugo that's correct. It's technically 6th gear. This ZF6 transmission has 6 forward gears (that includes the "L" for low gear. But you typically don't need it unless you're on a steep grade with a heavy load or stuck somewhere.
Oh ok yeah thank you Bc my truck has 4 gears and a D and I just got it so I didn’t know what it was used for really useful the truck only has a max speed of 85 mph.
I have the same noise just after i changed from a damaged dual mass flywheel to a luk solid flywheel kit. Noise comes only with low rpm and when i press the clutch it is away. I think its in the transmission.
@@holgerhub2519 That's interesting because when I replaced my clutch and flywheel in 2017 the noise went away for a while and then came back stronger than ever. I think it's also in the transmission and wish I could fix it. I know people say it's normal for old trucks but I still want to fix it.
I’m no expert on this stuff my freind thinks the synchros are out in 4th 5th and idk about 6th but the sound is verry simalar to that noise what do u think
It's very likely, what's the mileage on your transmission? My situation was different due to the fact that I had put a transmission in my truck under 5000 miles ago. Have you tried to use Redline ATF fluid? If you do a fluid change and it helps the noise, it is most likely something inside the transmission.
@@HungOverSheep I’m not for sure what the misplace on the trans is but I did a fluid change 2 weeks ago and used mercon 5. The guy said he had it rebuild 30k mikes before I bought it I put probly 10-15k on it. And I didn’t realy hear the bous until after I changed the fluid.
Unfortunately I have not. Many claim it's gear rollover, but mine just doesn't have the deep sound like I've heard before. I'm about to replace my front leaf springs and shocks front to back. While I'm working I'm going to experiment with it on jack stands and a helper pressing the brakes (to produce a load) and see if I can duplicate the sounds with the truck off the ground.

"normal" is what I found to be untrue. I'm at 310k and the sound still hasn't resurfaced. I love the sound of the 7.3, not the sound the drive line was making lol.
@@fxnytroxtxFPP That clutch was for stock HP rating, yes. Was not OEM, bought it from Southbend. However, I started making changes on my truck shortly after. My truck is still stock injectors and stock turbo, it does have a tuner and other soft mods on her though.
I have a 2000 zf6 7.3 only upgrades are ts6 chip and boost fooler clutch is beginning to slip on 140 hp mode. I use it as a fun daily driver what clutch will last for a long time and handle around 420 hp that's how much I have
Check out Southbend clutches, that's what I put in my truck and it seems to be doing a great job. I went with a stage 1, they have all kinds of clutches and make it easy to shop their website. I installed it myself first time. No issues.
That’s just a standard thing. My truck does it, my coworkers dodge does it, our allis chalmers does it, they just all make that sound without throttle applied
I found out what it was my Differential pinion bearing jack your truck up from back differential and roll your tires from left to right and you’ll see the rear drive shaft on diff moving sloppy you’ll see what I’m talking about
Did you replace it with a new one and the noise went away? I installed a new ox lock rear differential but did not replace the pinion bearing. The noise I have was the same after that installation too.
@@alexnunez6373 I've put redline in it which is what the best fix seems to be from my research. The only thing is that I had zero change in the noise. That's why I'm so hell bent to make sure it is not something else besides gear rollover. I don't have any sounds in neutral with the clutch in or out.
@@HungOverSheep well if your talking about the growling noise at low speeds in gear that’s normal I have two 7.3L trucks with fz6 transmission and they both have 130k miles and they make noise at lower speeds in gear when your just letting the motor pull the truck
@@Chase_01 that's common with higher milage ZF6 transmissions, yes. It's called gear rollover. My case was different due to having a freshly remanned transmission.
@@HungOverSheep your chasing ghosts, my old zf6 went at 275k miles I put reman in from the best guy in town and it sounds exactly the same as my old one. That’s called gear rollover noise, literally when the rpm drops from going into gear the engine creates excessive vibration that transfers into the transmission. Every single one came off the factory floors sounding like that, yeah changing out every bushing and tightening things can help reduce vibration and lower the noise, but you will never completely get that gear roll over noise to vanish in a zf6 that’s how they all are. German transmissions...

Yep, same as my 86 diesel. Except mines so loud that it can hide the screams of nearby children.
Sometimes I like the saying, "earmuffs are cheaper." Haha.
Mines make the same noise but only on first to second gear and mostly when not given enough gas but on third gear and on its very fine.
You might be experiencing gear chatter since you are only experiencing it in first and second gear.

I have the exact same noise on my C4 corvette with the ZF6. It got a bit worse after putting a new clutch on. Shouldve shimmed it while I had it out.

My zf5 makes the same noise, and i have heatd other transmission make it also, i don't think ots a big thing
Mine makes a boat order motor noise between each year right when you push in the glutch
That will most likely be your throw-out bearing failing.
I have a 99 f350 dually and before I bought it one of my friends who works at a ford dealership told me that that sound was normal.

How did you remove the shift boot. I know about the 4 screws, but how do you remove the stick shift.
If you push the boot down (or sometimes pull it up), you will see two bolts holding the stick shift to the shift tower. You can almost see them in my video if you watch closely.

I wouldn't be able to give you an accurate answer. That's an entirely different set-up than the 7.3 L. Does your truck have a ZF-6 transmission in it?
Same as a dodge getrag try putting extra quart of fluid in will quiet it right dowb
I actually already have done that with Redline ATF. It helped a lot with gear roll over.
when i put a new clutch in mine ... the pilot bearing was screwed up and scored the input shaft .... after new part sound was gone!

My 1999 F250 7.3 has this transmission and is making the same noise.
It's a great thing to check out, depending on the miles on your transmission, you may be experiencing gear rollover inside your transmission as well.
It’s got 280K miles. I believe it is still the original transmission. I may see about having it rebuilt in a year or so.

i have exact same noise on my 1999 7.3L , and mine has only 58k miles
This clutch only got 30k on it before I had to replace it.

All n all way easier if you notice. Your gear shift should move up or down. That shifter should slam in to hear rebuilt tranny. Ok Germany.
Tie the heat shield alongside the exhaust pipe with a ratchet stap and see if the noise stops.
That's one of the first things I checked; common problem but wasn't mine this time around.
It needs some rpm’s. Step on pedal all the way to the right. 😂 no charge$$

From my understanding, I thought gear roller mostly happened during neutral with your foot off the clutch?
HungOverSheep just changed my clutch to a valair HD. If you don’t get in the throttle it’ll cause gear rollover

Need throw out bearing replaced
Throw out bearing was in great shape, I did replace it anyway though. Turned out to be my clutch causing the noise.
