      Honestly, so did The Stranger. Like, why didn't he tell the authorities he saw where they fell? He doesn't need to mention the Wendigos, and even if he kept quiet to keep the search and rescuers from the Wendigos, they were at risk looking for the girls anyway. Unless he somehow didn't know they were being searched for.

      I was thinking about that! The way the journal wrote it said "Man or woman", and talks about the respect of animals on the mountains, so they'd be part of the natural order. As well as the fact that ,eating what you have to as an animal is natural, while not natural for a person, I feel the Wendigo spirit might not affect them. Sam’s actress mentioned in an interview that the scar is connected to the curse. It’s a similar shape to the symbols the Stranger left behind too. My guess is since she’s responsible for killing the biggest Wendigo and its co, the curse got angry with her and inserted a piece of itself into her. That combined with the mental turmoil from that night will forever haunt and taunt her until she goes back to the mountain, so it can finally try and claim her.

    i heard before that the thing that's going on with Josh that made his story even more tragic is that when looking at his medication, he was treated for depression, but when looking at his symptoms, he was suffering from schizophrenia. Rather strange way of portraying the use of anti-depressants, isn't it? I haven't been majorly depressed myself, but I have taken a lot of different meds due to chronic migraines and whatnot, and anti-depressants aren't addicting at all. At least not in the sense as you would suddenly take tons of pills in no time, like some might be tempted to with opioids, benzos etc. So not entirely sure what we are supposed to get from that scene? It feels like we are supposed to believe Sam has fallen into some sort of deep addiction, but then sertraline doesn't make much sense. Could of course be that Sam has simply slipped so far into depression that she doesn't clean her room anymore. So, it's not her emptying bottles of anti-depressants at an alarming rate, it's simply her no cleaning up the empty ones.

      @heidi-kr2xi 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +24

      yeah i thought the same! i figured the pills were a sort of anti depressent but thinking about it more it might be for schizo (what josh had) and it passed onto sam due to her traumatic exprience, she seemed heavily impacted by it in the ending when talking in the credits and even saying 'idc if you believe it, you will have to' etc which is symptoms of schizo. and shes having a achizo epsiode about the bleeding arm, not sure what the symbol means bc it didnt look related to the wendigos, but you can tell since she hasnt been taking her pills hence them pilling up on her bedside table. so maybe sam ins mc in a future game w dr hill with a sort of mental disorder. sounds so good!

      the shorthand or abbreviations most commonly used are either sz / sch / or SAD (provided a mood disorder is also present) but it's a complicated disorder with many different branches! :) It's entirely possible that Sam developed it as she's likely at the right age group, combined with the traumas of losing her friends & yknow... nearly escaping death LMFAO- but it could also be a plethora of different disorders; we'll just have to see what the devs decide :D

    I just realized that Josh never talks in his "therapy sessions". First, I thought that's just so the player doesn't recognize who the patient actually is, and thats definitely also part of the reason, but there's another reason as well. When we, as the player, choose one of two ways to answer any query from Dr. Hill, Josh doesn't voice the answer, even after the reveal. Dr. Hill just answers, he knows what Josh is thinking, because he is Josh's hallucination. The hints were there from the very beginning

      Emily can mention the fire tower and the wendigos.
      The fire tower only comes up if her relationship with Matt was bad and he abandoned(jump to safety). She goes on about how Matt left her on the crumbling tower. She doesn’t mention it here because if she’s on good terms with Matt, then she’s solely worried about his wellbeing.
      No one really mentions the wendigos but all of them can. The reverse order in which the first set of interviews go is the order of who gets to speaks about the mines, wendigo, and potentially Josh. People have to die to get the next person up. So it’s typically always Sam but if she’s dead, then it’s Mike. The rest goes Jess>Matt>Emily>Ashley>Chris. Emily’s is the most informative version of the “investigate the mines” interviews.

    • @mekhakreature
      @mekhakreature 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      Yup. Rule of threes for survival. I've always hear it as "3 minutes without air, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food".
      I've heard it as shelter, mostly when I did camping and hiking and stuff back in the day.
      And of course how long you can go without food generally depends on how much muscle, and then fat, that your body can self-cannibalize before you genuinely waste away.

    • @fuzzyapple
      @fuzzyapple 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      As a rule of thumb that works, but technically all those things are heavily dependent on the circumstances. Survive 3 minutes without air just marks the time when your brain cells start dying without oxygen, you'd need someone to revive you, though, since most people pass out way before that. Water needs depend on the climate you're in, and like the commenter before me said, food depends on your build and metabolism

There are so many friend groups at that age that are just full of drama and they don't really get along. -in the lead up to the prank Emily says that Mike is Class President (also her bragging about her GPA in the fight with jess but that could be college)
      -when Josh is trying to hype Chris to go for it with Ashley he says something like "look around, do you see any parents?"
      -in Hannah's diary she writes about "mom finally agreed" in reference to the party, (could be just permission to use the lodge though)

Also, the framing and other small details! All very important things that make such a difference. I agree that, at times, the background appears less interesting in the newer version and sort of loses that sense of outdoor moonlight. More focus now on the action and on the character's expressions, and such? (But I've never actually watched the original) I majored in Art, so I could definitely nerd out on that kind of thing!! Emily does have attitude, but I feel like she is reasonable, practical and resilient enough to put your differences (if any) aside for the sake of survival. Meanwhile you would have to hold Ashley's hand through the entire ordeal while dealing with her panic attacks and temper tantrums. The most useful thing she did in the entire game was opening the door for Chris. I find it funny how the developers tried to make Chris and Ashley a couple, but they spend more time arguing with each other than being sweet. The chemistry is non-existent.

    Idk like that’s less of a criticism and a personal preference thing except I would argue that the fixed camera angle did let you see…more? This is still me being soooo nit picky btw 😅 but during the last Jess&Matt section the over the shoulder camera angle doesn’t let you naturally see how screwed up Jess is without you manually turning to look at her….like obviously she’s SO wounded but iirc in the original you can also see it in how she walks, like she’s so slow, trailing behind Matt, arms dangling, etc.
    again, this is me being nitpicky but I do miss that aspect from the original especially since it’s another hint to the player that Jessica seriously can NOT run.

    People are talking a lot about how the search teams clearly messed up looking for Hannah and Beth. Please keep in mind people, firstly a lot of the time search groups aren't brought in or allowed to investigate until people are gone for a while, oftentimes until the missing people are in what's considered the time period least likely to be survivors. Then consider that search teams aren't just seeking these people but trying not to add to casualty counts. Especially in hostile environments like that mountain. They have to work in small groups and travel light, so they aren't exactly equipped like an endgame Skyrim player. If they do go in large groups they are either discouraged or outright disallowed from splitting off to prevent more disappearances. Then there's the low visibility and snow on the mountain. Any tracks have been covered up. The snow can also easily and usually does hide things like deep pits, crevasses and worse they can fall into at a moment's notice or never find.
    Then keep in mind the history of the mountain. Those mines and the sanatorium were the subject of a major cover-up. We never see anything telling us the Washingtons even know about it. Josh only knows little bits of their existence and not their background due to setting up his horror show and stumbling on them. The search and rescue teams likely weren't told about these places at all, nor would they have maps to find and investigate them.

    Great analysis of the original v remake.
    I think you're right that if you have a copy of both games in hand, the pros of the remake outweigh the cons. That said, I also think that if you have the original game, there's not a big reason to buy the remake.
    That post-credits scene with Sam seems to be pointing to, presumably, some kind of sequel, which I would be all about. I mean, it's not the most uplifting of scenes, nor can I quite decide if there's a way for it to be related to Until Dawn beyond having a crossover character (frankly, seeing Sam get caught up in a whole new horror might actually be better than anything tying back to Josh/Wendigos/etc). But just that little teaser has me ready for more.
    Incidentally, you were asking about flamethrower guy's backstory. We do get a bit on the totem screen. There's a video that increasingly completes as you find totems in the game. It's narrated by that guy and, from what I remember, he talks about his lineage a bit. That said, because video completion is based on finding totems, I don't think I've ever seen the whole thing. But it's definitely worth watching for just a little extra lore.

There are exceptions-if you are somewhere very hot you can die of thirst faster, and somewhere very cold you will die of hunger faster (body burns energy for heat), and of course if you are on the heftier side vs skinner side effects things. In my opinion, this was the best choice based game they have given us. I really liked Frank Stone, but it still doesn't compare to this one. I kinda wish they would take their time and give us another game like this one. They'd get my money so fast @.@

    Once again, another game that I was able to watch thanks to you Gab. You see, I've wanted to watch the gameplay of Until Dawn for a long time, but didn't have the guts for it🙈 But when I saw you starting the playthrough of the remake, I told myself it's time now, and I finally watched the whole game. Thanks for the playthrough, Gab❤

    Hannah's diary is so sad. Gave me vibes of the movie Ravenous from 1999, which also incorporates the Wendigo

    The comparison clips are so interesting to me. When I watched the original gameplay all those years ago, I was absolutely terrified by the wendigos; Primarily because of the lighting in parity with their cloudy eyes and twitchy movements. In the remake, while their skin textures are undeniably better, the lack of drama, ambiance and cinema really took me out of the experience. I've watched horror films multiple times and never stopped feeling that spine tingling anxiety despite knowing what's coming. If only they added some more of those creepy particles and intense highlights which add so much extra nuance to the monsters and scenes; it would be a perfect remake.

    In the comparison video at the end, a lot of the Sanatorium stuff feels like it's 'filmed' through like a night vision style of camera. The green tint and the difficulty with the details and the contrast all remind me of when I was obsessed with watching Ghost Hunters and a lot of their night vision work was like that.

    It kind of strikes me as a strange remake to make. I would also argue they should have called it a Remaster, since the vast majority of the game is identical. When I think of a Remake I think of RE2, or SH2, or something like that, where they're totally rebuilding the game from the ground up. In this case, it looks like they used 99% the same animations and models, and just updated the textures. Seemed like they adjusted things like the snow, and obviously lighting and shaders, but all of those things feel like they'd fit under the Remaster umbrella. It doesn't really feel that different as a game. It's not a bad thing, just seemed odd to call it a remake. The other thing is that the game really wasn't that old, it was just on the previous generation of hardware, unlike something like RE2 which was a PS1 game, or SH2 was a PS2 game, or FF7, etc.

    Wait does the new ending hint at them making like an actual sequel, an Until Dawn 2?

    Unpopular opinion? I HATE Ashley. She's always causing trouble and freaking out. I wish she and Chris didn't get together. Chris seems nice, but blind sided by his crush on her. She's just a whiney little thing.

      I feel like Ashley was written as a Girl Next Door archetype and the writers thought that was enough to balance out her character flaws, rather than giving her active moments that show her strengths (like they do with Emily).

    That was fun to see the Defends at the very end.
    Grate new ending.
    Will you do a Kill them all ending?
    Now I want to see a Until Dawn 2 game.

    The visual composition in the OG is way much better, i honestly wish the had playing more with the lights in the remake. And something i really like in the og is the slow pacing, the drama and the way the light changes according to the hour in game

    An awesome playthrough! The new details are a nice touch, but somewhat dampened by the strange bugs. Once, when I was playing, I thought Jessica died, because she spawned without her head for a moment. 😱 Overall, still great!

    The detail quality in the remake is lovely. I miss the atmospheric lighting and elements from the original though. And the original upped the contrast which wasn't really done in the remake, I'm guessing to make it more "realistic"? I also miss the colors in the original.
