You are going to be a successful TH-camr. What I appreciate about your analysis is how honest and self aware it is. Few people would admit the degree to which hype on TH-cam influences their decisions, most pretend it's rational, and as a result of that honesty you gave an original take on the zf. Incidentally I was looking to decide which system I was going to go into, and the Nikon zf is the reason I decided to go with Nikon. Keep doing a good job, only criticism id make is put more effort into the editing (specifically audio).

For now I hope I improve small steps one video after an other.
Regarding my English I'm also aware, since English is my 3rd language and unfortunately I don't use it currently every day. But for the English part I also hope to improve over time like Peter Lindgren did. At least you can understand it :)

Fill the frame -- you're using 40% of it. You aren't the subject of the video; the camera (i.e. shiny object) is.
Manually focus your lenses pre-shoot, and move items of interest (e.g. the lens, the camera body) into the focused plane as needed; having out-o-focus hunting constantly -- or even for a second -- is annoying to the viewers, since it's entirely avoidable.
Either use your mic (a lavalier, if I'm not mistaken) a little closer to your mouth, or get something like a boom mic or something with greater sensitivity; your voice levels are too low, and the viewer shouldn't have to crank their own volume to compensate.

The reason they released the ZF before the Z6III is the Z8. Nikon can't afford to outcompete one of their flagship products that soon after it's release. With the ZF being a completely different style of camera it is a lot less likely to cannibalize Z8 sales.
On the camera itself: The ZF is what the Df should have been 10 years ago. It is still flawd in a few ways, at least to my taste. But it is by far the best retro camera Nikon has ever produced.
Since I left the Nikon F-mount system around 2015 or so, I jumped from brand to brand and back. Fuji, Sony, Leica, Panasonic, Sigma, Hasselblad ... with native and adapted glass. It cost me a good chunk of money but it made the differences clear in a way that no review ever could. There is no substitute for experience. The Z9 was the first camera from Nikon I was interested in again, mainly for the shutterless design and the tech behind it. With the ZF I now own my first Z-mount body and as far as I can tell they put a lot into it.
Some of my personal gripes with it:
    - Ergonomics. You can make a camera with retro dials that is still fits human hands, Nikon. Fuji has been doing that for over a decade now, please learn from them. Give me something to hook my thumb into on the back, at least.
    - Flip out display: I don't like it on this camera. The ZF could have had a completely flat back from the 2x2 buttons to the other side of the camera where the plasticky, protruding display-hinge now sits. The camera would be lighter, less annoying to hold in your left hand and it would remove a potential point of failure.
    - Micro SD: This is almost a non issue to be honest but with a slightly more ergonomic design and a somewhat bigger grip it would have also been possible to fit a second full size SD slot, I think.
    - The button layout could be better. Most obvious example: The mignify + and - buttons. When shooting a manual lens and you want to zoom in to check focus, you have to reach down with your right thumb and hit that magnifier button three times ... and then you have to reach down even further and hit the other button to get out of that view again because half pressing the shutter doesn't do that. The only way around that: Set a custom button to 100% zoom. So now you have 3 buttons wasted to accomplish one thing. ... Why, Nikon?
    ....
Overall I am still happy with the camera for now and especially with the level of tech in it. Top end processor, solid sensor, great AF and IBIS, dual card slots, fantastic screen and EVF and all of that in a relatively compact package. But as much as I love physical dials... when the Z6III comes out and fixes those ergonomics for me, I might switch. Or I find another solution until then. We'll see.
Good video, I agree with most of it. Keep it up and ... moin aus Hamburg. :)

Lord you have a long negative list, I’m glad you saw some positives in the end. There’s no such thing as the perfect camera, remember it’s just a tool to release your creativity, so in the end despite a couple of niggles Nikon has delivered a solid product. I just love mine and yes I have big hands so I bought the smallrig grip and now it feels fantastic in hand. Cheers and have fun!

    • @noenken
      @noenken 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@GhostRider_SR I do have the smallrig grip too. It helps for sure. It doesn't entirely fix it though. (For me! Hands are different.) And when holding it in your left hand those ridges underneath are not very nice to the touch, I think. Of course no camera is perfect but on the other side no camera is actually bad anymore either. Just think about the core specs. Full frame 24mp, IBIS, solid AF, good video, dual card slots and so on. Even with all of these specs listed out there are Canon, Sony and Lumix cameras that fit all of those, none of them bad either and all in the same price range. So the niggles are what decisions are based on now. And I am still thinking about switching to be honest.
None of this should matter to you if you're happy. I know I'm a bit of a stickler so by all means ignore me and go shoot and have fun. As a tool to make images it is as good as any other out there. :)

@@noenken Agreed, we have reached a point where pretty much any camera on the market is excellent and only now a matter of individual tastes. Cheers!

Great video - I share a similar sentiment regarding the design and the timing of the release. Nikon has such a rich history in their f line up of film camera's and tapping into the FM2 as a design language was a great idea. I often see Nikon F3, FA, FE, F2, FM etc cameras in the film community being held in high regard. Additionally, in this retro design full-frame market, its really only Leica who is doing it with fuji offering only the APSC or Medium Format. For me, Leica is a large jump in commitment, and would require me to sell gear to move into it, where as the Nikon ZF allows me to stay with my other fuji cameras, but also use some of my older film camera lenses and retain the same focal length.
Can't wait to see some of your thoughts on the zf, and how you find the camera.

Nice video, was looking at Nikon ZF/mirrorless, the plastic lens mount on a lot of the new Nikon lenses is a real disappointment, so I went and purchased a minty used D850 for a fraction of the price of the ZF instead, and the old f mount lenses can be excellent and good value. This is not true. Nikon released so far 40 lenses.
8 of which are with plastic mount. All those are under 200g. (Except one 206g)
      Z DX 12-28mm f/3.5-5.6 PZ VR
      Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR
      Z DX 24mm f/1.7
      Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3
      Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE)
      Z 28mm f/2.8
      Z 40mm f/2 (SE)
      Z 40mm f/2
I have not heard complains regarding Nikon plastic mount yet.
However, most lenses are dust and moisture sealed. Which is extraordinary. Build of all those lenses I found better then similar lens of some concurent brands. Optics quality is among highest.

    • @solutionroute
      @solutionroute 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

All the S line lenses are metal mount and extremely well made and almost every single one is offering top class performance, in many cases far outpacing anything from F mount years. The 28/2.8 and 40/2 are not S line but still optically very good and very well priced. Something has to give. I have the 40/2 and love it for a smaller walk around package on any Z body when I really want small (not so important to me), but the Z 35/1.8 S, or the 24/70 2.8 S, tends to be mounted the most. I've no doubt the 40/2 plastic mount lens will be going strong many many years from now.

Sony and Canon definitely dominate the AF game. I had the A7IV and never missed a shot and video AF was flawless.
But somehow when shooting stills it wasn't fun for me. Therefore I moved on checked out other brands.

Agree, I had the Q2 and stills and as a camera 👌if I could afford the a7r5 I’d probably go that way because the screen is as it should be. Interestingly Fuji did it previously with their cheap xt100 plastic bayer filter cam. Maybe I should get that. The x-t5 was as good as the q2 for me. Just to let you know, Nikon started their homage back to their FM and FE range of cameras (begun in 1977 & 1978 respectively) in 2013 when they released the Nikon Df. This was also a full frame camera, but it had only an optical viewfinder and no video support. It's a great camera an I still use mine today, but I now prefer both my Nikon Zfc and Zf, both of which are smaller and more functional. But it began 10 years ago with the Df.

Good video, I have been thinking lately if I should upgrade my "old" XT-2 to the XT-5 or the new Zf. The controls are important to me and being able to see aperture/time/ISO at a glance. The Zf is a great camera but with the zoom lenses it is relatively large and heavy. The Zf is an XT-5 for full frame and looks just as good. But that's not enough for me to change systems.

If you have lenses for your Fuji cameras I would personally upgrade to the X-T5 in your case. The X-T5 is a great camera and still gives that retro vibe like the Zf. Although I bought the Zf because of retro and fullframe, using it now a few days, I find the size / design a bit to bulky. If I now put on zoom lenses as you said, the Zf is just an ergonomic "disaster" in that category. If you are on the fence, just go to your local camera store and hold the Zf yourself :)

I have an xt 2 & was thinking about the exact same thing , with a 16-55 or 8-16 the xt2 is not as good ergonomically either , such cameras in both lines are better with smaller primes . Many with Fuji May also need the grip accessories also with Nikon smalll rig not yet out it would seem. I tried the zf in store with 40mm & 50mm mc , ok but will be better with a grip.
As for social media neither camera will get much love from those who are used to customisation & there’s no doubt Sony has very strong influences amongst the you tube reviewers , so I expect Nikon to get canned a bit in general regardless of the outcome of this or a z6 iii.

Access to the control knobs is a good move I guess. Convert to Nikon? Not so sure about this but the specs will help. Specs are one thing, Them performing as touted is another. I'm in the Nikon DSLR eco-system & waiting to see where they go over the next year. I shoot a lot of wildlife therefore I need an accurate AF Tracking system. I watch a ton of you tube vids on this stuff & Nikon still lags behind some. AF is to erratic. Jumps off subject like it is still using the phase/contrast detect rather than subject recognition & keeps hunting after the subject has been acquired. Even in some of Nikon's own vids they show it tracking & it jumps off & they cut the vid rite there. I might give Sony a try or maybe the Canon R5II that is rumored. With that said, I'll eventually purchase this camera with the FTZ adapter rather than lose money on my F-mount lenses. Ishoot the D810 but want the tilt screen & the Focus Stacking feature in my next camera. A jump up in mp's would be nice also since in wildlife photos there is usually cropping involved while editing. After you use the camera, give a report. Let us know how it does with faces. Pupil in focus using a wide aperture or did grab the eyelashes like some people say. Good luck with your channel & nothing wrong with your English. Not real smooth but I understand you perfectly. There are some succesful YT channels out there & they have some trouble translating what they want to say in english. Your not one of them. Happy shooting, stay safe & healthy.
PS: I still have my Canon AE-1 P that was purchased in 1984 & 2 rolls of Kodak Gold 200 that has been in the fridge for over 15 years.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I have some video plans with the Zf and will share my experience after using it for a while. Since the Zf is my first Nikon, everything is new :)
Regarding your special used case I think I would go the Canon or Sony route. Personally I would wait for the R5II :)
Reason is that Nikon has shown there current state of AF and that is the Z9 and Z8. This Zf might be slightly better, but without testing at the moment, I would say it would still happen, that the Nikon focuses on an eyeslash or the background instead of the subject.
Sony and Canon has shown there art of AF and brought that reliable technology already down to cheaper models, aka APSc line.
Just my thought on your subject :)
PS: Damn, these rolls of film stayed in your fridge as long as a teenage would grow up :D

I’m a Nikon fan through and through, would never buy a Panasonic with a Laica logo. With the Zf Nikon now has the best lineup in the world, if you add Z9 and Z8. Nobody can beat that.

It's definately a great line up and the Z6III and Z7III would complete it in the near future.

    Fujifilm has a “fan base”
Bro, Fujifilm has a cult lol most of them are new photographer who grew up in the mirrorless age. Also mostly spec nerds and absolutely hate everything not Fuji . One of the top 3 reasons I can’t stand Fuji anymore is the “fan base”

A few years ago I had Canon and Sony cameras and depending where you look at on the internet, the same behaviour applies to these fan bases. Me personally don't understand why people treat their camera brand like hardcore sport teams, but in the end I think it benefits all. If different camera brands have their hardcore fans, they will be able to sell their new products to keep competing on the market. And diverse camera brand market benefits the customer (ideally).
Also I don't see anything wrong people being new photographers growing up in the mirrorless age. That's how you generate young people into sales by providing them value / incentive to buy as a company. If your customer base dies due to aging, your company dies with them.
