Film simulation is a good concept for SooC. It is about licensing. Right now Fujifilm is the only company with licensed film, because they own the license, but once Nikon or other companies start offering their own licensed film simulations, exclusive or not, this would be an interesting move. This is mostly marketing, although you might have to increase the profile control options (like custom white balance, noise etc).
I remember injections film simulations via the sd card on my D40X / D300 / D200 cameras, it was fun but a bit klunky to install. I wish that Nikon had Kodak Ilford film profiles installed in its cameras and available in their wonderful fast post production menu were it’s possible to use profiles at 25/50/75/100 % (like a layer) on the final jpeg file and batch process the pictures. It’s a wonderful implementation on the Z8 and I guess the ZF has the same thing
Thank you. I confirm that this works well on my D5500, D5600, and Z50. Actually, I wasn't aware of this feature at all. It seems the feature has been available since 2015, maybe even before that. My D5600 took great pictures of exotic birds with the Fuji Velvia 100X simulation. I tried it yesterday. I used auto white balance, and it worked smoothly. I'm so excited. Actually, I'm very interested in Fuji because of their beautiful and memorable film simulations; they remind me of my childhood. But then, Nikon is capable of doing the same. I shoot RAW not JPEG but then Convert to JPEG through Lr then post to 500PX
Glad you find this video useful. I also think this feature is out for quite some time now, but it is not as SEO friendly like Fujis film simulation. Thank you very much for your time watching. Much appreciated!
I guess most Nikon shooters shoot in raw, but SOOC is currently trending and has it’s place and value in my opinion. Thank you very much for your time watching and commenting!
The best way to simulate film on Nikon (or Fuji) is to get a ColorChecker, create a dual illuminant profile, and then load .cube 3d lut film simulation files on top of that dual illuminant profile. Way better color than the built-in film simulations on any camera brand.
You are right using a profile will be far more precise. NPC has way less control. But the good part of NPC is that you see what you are shooting, and in case of RAW you can always discard the filter and do a different edit.
Fujifilm makes film simulations because it's a company that makes film (hence the name, in fact; before, the cameras from this same company were called Fujica (for Camera) and Fujifilm for the division that makes film, such as the Superia. The other companies don't have this history, unless they join forces with Kodak or software manufacturers such as DxO.
I know the NPC web page from a long time. I think it’s a beautiful way to share and preview PC profiles. But a part of this, I prefer to use the official Nikon Picture Control Utility. Do you see any advantages of NPC over PCU?
Hey! great video. Is there a way to use .NP3 file in the Nikon Zf? I created some nice new presets in the NX Studio, however, they are exported as .NP3 instead of .NPC which is readable by Nikon Z6iii but not the Zf. Any luck?
Nikon should really add RGB curves to picture controls , that would solve all film simulations. Now they only use the contrast curve and that is too limited.
One of my viewers mentioned, that it didn’t work on micro SD. As soon it was on regular SD, it worked. What kind of SD do you use? Also relatively new ones?
I downloaded fuji provia to my zf, and afew other picture profiles, but they all looked the same.... is it because i shot in raw? Is did i have to change the white balance?
I followed the instructions but it's saying I don't have any files on the SD card? The menu options light up but I can't get to the last portion assigning it
I could not download these ncp files to my nikon zfc a while back and this was pat of reason i sold that camera. The camera doesn't recognize them for upload. They did however upload onto the nikon 1 camera system which I was happy with.
The XT5 is already great in these areas with the appropriate lens, but since the Zf is full frame you’ll be able to achieve bokeh / DOF more easily with standard lenses with 1.8. I recommend the Zf, specially during this season with special sales (depending on the country). Check out Taylor Jackson Zf videos. He has done a lot of Zf wedding shootings. And yes, this works with Windows and Mac, I’m a Mac user myself. Thanks for watching!
That’s strange. Did you try with different SD cards? Otherwise you can reach out to nikonpc support mention on top of the webpage. The guy also uses a Z6. Still thanks for watching!
NX Studio renders raw files the same as the resulting jpeg, including the chosen color space, I.e. sRGB, and any lens correction, and reads the settings of the profile used.
So, I have a D500 and have attempted 3 times to place the Kodak Gold 100 into my camera and each time, my camera says "No picture control file found on memory card". I downloaded it 3 different times and clearly copied it to the SD card. I might add I formatted the new card in camera prior to starting the process. Thoughts?
Nikon releases a retro camera, without any film simulations.... No thanks, I will stay with my Z6 II and Z9. It's pointless to have a retro camera without any actual film simulations.
You do realise that "film simulations" is nothing but a clever marketing ploy reusing the names of old or current emulsions owned by certain brands in an effort to leverage nostalgia as a driver for purchase decisions? Just a clever way to market some (useful or not) jpeg creation "effects". A vague allusion to the way some (properly exposed and developed) slide films rendered on a (possibly calibrated) light table or through a (random light temperature) slide projector. For negative films, some vague recreation of how some films behaved in the darkroom under some circumstances (baths, enlarger lights and timings, types of paper). Then add fake grain. Nostalgia is really a strange sentiment, but "film simulations" should have nothing to do with a preference for one type of hardware user interface (dedicated dials and knobs) against another.
Thank you for a thoughtful and convincing counter-argument. It is always great to meet open minds and great intellects such as yours in this wholesome online world. Have a great day! @@CarlosPlazola

Flexible Color Picture Control on the Zf!!!! Come on Nikon!

LUMIX is doing that with their REAL TIME LUTS. Brilliant, even better than Fuji
