The crazy thing about how Johnny Rutherford won the IndyCar title was almost the exact same scenario happened exactly a decade later, where Al Unser, Jr crashed in the next to last race of the season at Nazareth Speedway (albeit not as serious as JR's incident), but was still named the IndyCar champion from his hospital bed. Funny how symmerity can happen across time in sports, especially motorsports.
Unfortunately the 1982 Atlanta 200 was not broadcast. Source: 1982 CART yearbook. It was going to be broadcast, but the original weekend got washed out and NBC didn't return the make up day
@rickravon6845 me too! 😭 eventhought I've known that for the last 20 years. Also 1982 Road America, 1985 Michigan 500 and 1986 Road America are the last 3 races never broadcast. Just small news clips
RIP Bobby and Al Unser, Sr, Billy Vukovich, Jr, Jerry Sneva, Gary Bettenhausen, Sheldon Kinser, Herm Johnson, & Tim Richmond.

15:46 there’s that famous Johnny Rutherford flip at Phoenix. Holy cow
Johnny was very lucky to not get hurt badly from that.
THANK YOU for these classic CART races!!
Still waiting to see the 1982 Atlanta 200!

12:21-12:24 Rarely did you see Big Al Unser as upset after a crash like he was there.
A lot of it I think had to do with how bad his 1980 season Was
Thanks for the UL!
Never thought I'd ever see Phoenix Raceway looking like an oversized local ring
Yes, Old and dusty. LOL Not much money put into it back then.
11:03-11:15 damn that almost worked
Awesome! Do you happen to have the 1980 CART Michigan race? Been looking for it for a long time now...
Unfortunately no, still looking for it. Supposedly, someone has a recording of it. Along with the 1980 Milwaukee 200 and 1979 Phoenix 150
@@motorsportshistorychannel A clip of it was used in a Tim Richmond documentary, so it's available somewhere.
