While reload definitely is petty and have better facial and body animations, however I love the stylized melancholy and dark shadow of the original. Like for example I prefer the introduction of the velvet room in the original then reload. So far my only problem of reload is that little too bright for the atmosphere compare to the original more dark and at menacing style.
Yeah P3R is a bit to bright but at least the art style still looks very appealing especially the 2D character model like Fuuka & Elizabeth are way better & more Cuter
@@garciasth217 other than atmosphere, p3r is nailing everything imo, the UI was fantastic, and ofcourse the P5 battle system made p3r more enjoyable as a turn based jrpg
@@darugdawg2453 yeah suck for nostalgia biased who can't afford P3R ahahaha,, all new changes in P3R makes me hard to go back to P3F cause I can't stand OG Tartarus being too boring when it comes to level design & the new one they nailed it
I think the original one was a lot spookier and I like how they let us listen to Burn My Dread Last Battle being played on the protagonist earphones, as we would only listen to that song again at the end of the game, creating a connection between the beginning and the end of the game.
Big Atlus L not letting people hear burn my dread. Now the final battle theme won't mean anything to them, just another song rather than being a callback to the opening cinematic
Og p3 was much more unnerving and ruthless Its not even a "nostalgia" argument here as normies would say, art direction, tone, cohesiveness of older games >>> focusing too much on modernized/polished graphics catered to play it safe business wise the sickness of modern aaa games is overcompensating of hd graphics with extremely high budgets while older games were more creative with the limited resources they had
@@trotic708i disagree on that even the opening og itself already foreshadowing “you will die” this p3r just pretty much p5 version with too many bright colors
Hmmm... I like the original more. The way that it's almost silent about the characters's thoughts like Yukari putting the gun to her head where it feels raw, gripping, and ruthless as you're wondering if she's going to do it or not and her panting. Over the Remake where she's talking about putting the gun to her head. It feels more telling than showing in the Remake where in the Original it was Showing instead of Telling and that told a lot. OG goes straight to the point and has a quiet sobering ambience to the scenes, you feel this isolation with the MC walking through the train station and on the subway. Remake takes it time to show the environment and how pretty it looks and happy everyone else and the MC walking about the day-to-day life. Comes out a little jarring. Even the opening with the Moon (almost horror like) and Sun (another day) is a good way of saying the difference between them are like night and day. Sure, the Remake's artwork is beautiful with more impressive details and designs but it comes off as too pretty and colorful for the kind of atmosphere that Persona 3 has and something feels lost spiritually because of it. Like they're trying to make it more like Persona 4 and 5 with how more full of light and colors they have where 3 wasn't like that. The way the MC just walks in the Dark Hour in the OG is haunting and his disinterest attitude where the Remake they go out of the Animated Cutscene and him not really reacting even a little. Walking through the bloody puddle in the OG is missing from the Remake. They're little changes, but it does say a lot about atmosphere. Even the music and sound direction. Felt more ominous and foreboding in the OG. I do like how signing your name in the Remake looks. Cool and stylish and gets into instead of a simply HUD screen. Also, the old artstyle works so well to convey that gritty reality in 3 so well with how the characters are drawn and express themselves.
I felt like the music side is actually improve over old one & I know most peeps can't move on from OG female singer but the new battle theme song when you approaching shadow from behind is absolute banger & even the new opening theme are really good Honestly with all life quality change like gameplay & Tartarus overhaul level design it's hard to go back to OG P3Fes,, especially those new art style 2D model looks a lot better in Reload seeing Fuuka & Elizabeth in much better agle, shape & way cuter makes me happy enough because I'm not a fan of their 2D art style in OG .... even tough we all can agree OG gloomy art direction looks better in OG but the new art direction is still looks very appealing to the eye, at least P3R still very much look alike Old P3 & much more close to P3 Movie counterparts, funny enough P3 movie art direction are close to P4 & P5 but nobody complain LoL
One change that really bugs me is when Minato first uses the Evoker. In the OG even he struggles to pull the trigger, it can be seen as symbolic but also he has no idea about this world of personas. All he knows is that Yukari tried to use it to fight this monster but he could just as well be shooting himself in the head. In the remake there's none of that, he just accepts everything and does it with no struggle.
@@jase276they basically took the choreography from P3 Movie for the most part in this game, like Makoto screaming scene with glowing blue eyes which is why I looks different from OG P3 ps2
It's this weird situation where new art direction is the problem. The original was much more moody and atmospheric, you could feel the environment. The new one, whilst the characters themselves look much better, they don't seem to have much connection to their surroundings. The dorm is very bright now, compared to the gloom lighting of before, your dorm room is empty and flat, whilst in the original it feels like it has more detail and life to it (especially with the light flooding in through the open windows and the dust in the air).
Kinda makes me want to get the PC files and do a texture overhaul. I can't mod, but I understand art and aesthetics. I think toning down the brightness and muddying the colours a little bit would go a long way to giving back the game's identity. Like, P3RE is _pretty,_ don't get me wrong, but the glitzy graphics fit the drama of the Phantom Thieves way better than it fits SEES, and even P5 had its dirty and cramped environments. This game needs to be toned down to something more visually melancholic for the sake of the characters and story.
@@conspiracypanda1200honestly complain about the color being to bright was kinda dumb hot take, if you actually play the entire game there's actually a lot of really dark tone places, just for the fact that P3P took the aesthetic from P3 movie which is makes sense why it's bright,, at the end of the day P3R is just better game overalls when it come to Combat, Tartarus level design & city environment seeing a bunch of random NPC walking around street makes the world feels alive now
You guys have gone completely retarded with that nostalgia bs lol. P3R is better in every aspect. "oh but the vibes". This is one has it's own cool vibe and this is not a bad thing or worse thing.
I love the remake but the OG's tone and atmosphere is miles better. The 2d animated scenes are much better directed with better layout that strengthens the mood. The pitch red background when Thanatos appears is so striking compared to the remake
I never played the original Persona 3, but in my humblest opinion, Reload’s cutscenes are way better. While I do think the mood and grim tone gave the og its identity, Reload’s cutscenes are better in conveying what is happening onscreen. The older cutscenes constantly have these close-ups of people’s faces, billboards, and clocks that it’s difficult to tell what is happening sometimes. Along with the constant dips to black and cut-ins of symbolic imagery, I often get confused on what am I supposed to be focusing on. If the camera was at a wider angle, I would’ve actually liked some of these cutscenes. Reload’s cutscenes have wider and consistent shots (both 2D and 3D) that are easier to comprehend and by default are more enjoyable to watch. Although I will say, the shots of Orpheus and Thanatos in the original look way better. They just come off more savage and off putting than how Reload handled it. Honestly, if Makoto’s awakening was done in 2D, both personas would have been even more terrifying.
@@alexquah784 fair enough, I think the some shots in the original can be hard to follow. But yeah, the Orpheus and Thanatos reveal looks way better in the original because it was bolder in its direction. That scene is the one I really don't like in regards to Reload's changes. Everything else is good. Although as a game, I much prefer Reload haha
@@samuel.jpg.1080p consider that now a red background automatically means persona 5 to most people, so that's probably the reason they didn't go for it
@alexquah784 So theres an interesting thing about Reload’s scene with the Protagonist’s Awakening. They tried to recreate the P3 Movie Awakening. And it was doomed to fail the moment they were recreating it in 3D. The Movie Awakening had great and dynamic shots with excellent sound design. The movement of the characters was strong and fluid, they didn’t look like they were stiff / forced to move. Now I don’t know why they even bothered because trying to emulate a scene from 2D animation won’t look beautiful (when there is no love put into it). They really should’ve taken the scene in a different direction, that way people wouldn’t have judged it as much. With all that said, Portable still has the worst P3 Awakening by far. Official tier list goes as follows: 1. P3 Movie 2. P3 / FES 3. P3 Reload 4. P3 Portable
I'm playing Persona 3 FES for the first time now and I just keep thinking "Evangelion" over and over again. The aesthetics, mood, plot, themes, characters... like I'm not ragging on it at all but it's clear where their inspiration came from.
Conflicted on the lighting in reloaded, some parts feel a bit too bright like the dorm, but then other parts of the game like Tartarus give the same exact feeling the original dark light in the original had if not better. I'll say this though the lighting has really made the day time segments way more visually appealing.
Nah that's completely valid. if you pay attention to the edges of your own dorm room its like the wall itself is emitting some light for some weird reason. A lack of drop shadows in a lot of places like the classroom and dorm. Also if you look at the sun from the classroom after school it just looks like a big spotlight. Nonsense light sources everywhere. I feel like that shouldn't be a problem we see in an unreal engine game lol
@susantuna3434 same. I can't even vibe with the new music and the Velvet Room is the best it's been since Persona 2! But the style and atmosphere is just making me want to go back to PS2, even at 60 fps. I don't want to have to mod it to feel better about it, but that's probably what I'll end up doing. If it had the same love P5 had I'd be enjoying it a lot more
aw the original opening had such a great pacing, it was nerve wrecking with the flashing scenes coming and going setting us in a careless world. No voice in Yukari's scene was also a great enviromental desition, she was desperate and hopeless. I remeber playing it 10 years ago and thinking it was a horror game thanks to that + the awakening scene haha. The new one is softer, just my opinion tho!
The way Thanatos bursts out of Orpheus looks cartoony in Reload, like something out of FLCL, and the way he defeats the Magician is somewhat less visceral.
@@MARMAR-xw6gjnah, it's a fact that Reload put less effort in the intro, the direction and the animation was mid and the full anime cinematic was cut halfway too, insted they used the game engine. I remember that the PSP version did something similar using game engime instead of the anime intro, I understand that coming from a handheld of that era, but Reload just did it lazy tbh.
@@ashtremble it's just the art style being inferior, everything else about gameplay, Tartarus level design, city & school environment, some of the music are improve upon OG P3 The overhaul Tartarus level design, brand new music & better gameplay make me hard to go back to OG P3 because at the end of the day P3 Reload is just the same P3 OG with slightly improvement
@@pukususuiit's not entirely lazy cause I like the fact that you are able to control your character & give some sneak peak of city level design,, the only lazy things that I see is just the moment you see random street guy become coffins scene right before awakening section, everything else about the game feels just right for me at least they keep bath room 2D scene tough ahahaha
The OG is just so much more atmospheric and better at conveying tone. I also think that in some respects it is even better animated despite being older. And seriously? Orpheus not having a proper melee animation? What is this? Modern Pokemon?
Idk if Orpheus has a melee animation in Reload because I didn't use him that much, but if you pay atention, in Reload Orpheus uses Agi, an elemental fire attack, unlike FES, in which he uses Bash, a physical strike attack, which uses a completly different animation.
Yeah I wanted to see that motherfucker climb from out the top of his head again! 😂 it's like if the direction would have been better, how the cut the scenes and timed them, this would be waaaay better all around that fes. But they cut too much stuff like the blood puddle, burn my dread song in the opening, and more.
I didn't like how they portrayed thanatos. In the OG he was a fking monster, destroying that shadow like nothing and the new, yeah he killed the shadow easily, but w/out humiliation
That was the idea, tho. Thanatos was meant to appear in a berserker, completely out of control state that's why everyone was shocked at how mercilessly he teared down the "powerful" shadow. The remake completely fucks up his entrance and shows him in some shitty power up form that has none of the power of the original.
@@mlshiza5335 the sad part is that is not really a bad cinematic choice on a vacuum, but given the context and what the scene is meant to entail, it does feels jarring.
I'm really glad that reload came out, the only reason for my dissatisfaction would be about the environment, those faded colors and dark aura gave its charm to the game, and if we actually hear the music that Makoto listens to through his headphones, I wouldn't be surprised if we also see this depressive but cozy tone through his eyes.
idk how they decided which scenes should get animated cutscenes in reload. the first dark hour + orpheus scenes were so powerful in FES, i think i mustve replayed the thanatos part 100 times back in the day. the pacing of it now just doesnt quite hit. for what it's worth i should say im still enjoying my time with the remake, theres just a lot of little tiny missteps that i wish were handled a little different
When female protag got deconfirmed, the most common defense I heard for her removal, was the cost of remaking all the animated cutscenes for both characters instead of just one, a defense that I wasn't happy about, but at least understood. However, now that I have the game in my hands, while I am loving it, the fact that most of the animated cutscenese were just completely dropped in favour of CG cutscenes has me a bit annoyed. So much for the cost of animation excuse...
as a og persona 3 player i honestly dont see the big deal with reload. it def still nails the atmosphere of the original in some way. like yeah i see everyone's point and the og was for sure scarier, but reload isnt that far off. i feel at home playing through it.
Well, times change, so do audiences. And it is well, normal for remakes, that they alter things. Some people like it, some people dislike it. Personally I love Reload's artystyle and direction. It is way more modern while also having oldschool vibe with the setting. P1, P2 and P3 orginals were indeed more sinister and spooky in their vibe, but with P4G they changed the pace and mood to take Persona into different direction, with P5 being its peak. They clearly tried to apply this to P3, while also retaining some core characteristics and I think it went out really well on the middle ground. Remakes are always a double edged sword. You want to apply to both old and new players with different perspectives and ideas how this should look like.
"Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3". God that's nostalgic AF. I still got my launch limited edition P3 copy and the FES release. I remember when i was waiting for the first release. I sunk hundreds of hours into it when I got it. On topic: so far the OG Persona 3 releases are far better. I love the spooky and ruthless atmosphere that it presented at the beginning (especially it being a Megami Tensei spinoff and all). It almost reminded me of The Gardens of Sinners films. Ive played a few hours of P3R and that feeling the intro had in the original is gone.
100% agree, FES was my first experience with this game 15 years ago and the vibes are just gone. I also miss the dungeon crawler Etrian Odyssey feeling tartarus has in the OG. And the music.
The original animation was better. Since Persona wasn't the hit it is today, the creators took bolder artistic risks, using a variety of angles and making unique stylistic choices. Reload, in contrast, feels like a Hollywood take, playing it safe with formulaic elements that are known to work commercially.
You couldn't be more wrong. The original Persona 3's artistic style wasn't born out of wanting to deliver a more "daring" proposal but because of budget issues. Persona 3 was going to be Atlus' last game before closing so it had very little funding, this led to the decision to go for a slower, static and abstract style when making the scenes because it was cheaper to animate. People seem to forget that this isn't the first time Atlus has ignored the direction of the original P3, as the movies have nothing of that artistic style. Now that Atlus has money they decided to do something more dynamic because now they had the money to do what was originally planned This brings us to Reload which, having the budget that its predecessor didn't have, doesn't try to get closer to the original but to the movies
PS2 always had incredible lighting that hasn't yet been surpassed. GTA SA, Burnout Revenge, Black and even Persona 3 or SMT 3 feel much better on PS2 because of it.
I actually love how P3 FES, P3P and P3R are kind of complementary to each other instead of a replacement for the previous... but that makes the fact FES is still trapped in the PS2 sadder. Wish it surprises us one day by appearing perfectly remastered on Steam (but that's a looooong shot now).
FES isn't stuck on PS2. The game can be play on PS3 via digital copy from the PS Store. While it's the same as the PS2 version, the game isn't restricted to PS2 console alone.
@@player2-lightwater914 Be that as it may, it doesn't change the fact that FES is the only modern persona game not available on modern platforms. Atlus could've ported it, they just didn't want to, and now I have to emulate it when I would much prefer playing it on real hardware
Not really. Considering the answer is coming to P3R, there’s literally no reason to play FES or Portable anymore. Regardless though Portable is still worse for being on far inferior hardware.
The 2D cutscenes were so much well directed, they had that david lynch vibe. The reload killed that mood for something more generic with Unreal engine that feels weak in comparison. That's too bad coz i doubt a Persona 3 FES port like they did for P4G will ever come on PC now. guess the reload is still good for people who didn't play the OG.
Hopefully mods can fix some of the nitpicks tbh. Add the 2d cutscenes, Old aigis and akihiko voices and changing the colpuring and tone to be less oversaturated.
i played persona 3 back then, it's my fav persona game and i like reload more. and i don't care about 2d cutscenes, it's just 2 min videos in a massive game made by anime studio, not actual developers
@@Yuujin_K before reload came out i tried playing the og one and honestly i just cant stand it, even tho i played persona 4 like crazy. Reload has been pretty amazing tho
@@autocorrect5456 No one cares about yukari's face being shown seconds earlier unless they're looking for things to nitpick. The og came out in 2006, most people are gonna have those rose tinted glasses when comparing the two.
Both are good, Reload improved graphics and character details and expression but for the original j love hos they emphasize the weight of the atmosphere, the whole animation felt...idk unsettling
*Guess I will be the voice of reason and say both are awesome.* It was impossible to have the cutscenes with in-game graphics in the original, so they had to animate all of it, which gave it the distinct art style. In the modern we have a lot more in in-game graphics, which allow for lengthier and more clear and fluid sequences without as many cuts, which lets us much better follow the action. And well, I guess the battles go without saying. No room for discussion with both matching the times. *My verdict is, I'd rather uplift both for their merits than scour around for reasons to place one beneath the other. I love P3, in all its forms.*
You're not "the voice of reason". It's absolutely fine to think one is better than the other. There is no need to uplift both for their merits, especially when one is a remake released almost 20 years later at a higher price point.
while i think p3re is a step up from the original, the thing that's definitely lacking the most is the art direction. i think the character portraits are gorgeous, but it really feels as if they sacrificed the gritty and despondent atmosphere that the original had. everything is way too bright in this game, including the ui like the textbox (like why is it that vibrant blue? it doesn't look good with a lot of the environments...) i loved the dull tones in the original game because it perfectly reflects how the MC viewed the world. plus, the original opening cutscene had a really overwhelming, loud and bustling feeling in the city that was almost painful to watch vs how beautiful and busy the city is in reload. and there's the whole added dialogue to yukari trying to use the evoker, which when i first watched it i found to be really unnecessary because the whole tenseness from that scene was over how it looks like this random girl is literally about to off herself in silence (aside from her panting and the running water), constantly contrasting with the obnoxious liveliness of the city. also i get 3d animation is less expensive and also easier than 2d, but i felt like changing the scene of the MC awakening his persona lost a lot of its coolness(? edginess?) because of the 3d animation, that imo i wasn't really a fan of. he didn't really hesitate as much as he did in the original--he was clearly shaking because for all he knew, he was just holding a gun that he was about to literally shoot himself with. the 2d animation of thanatos also felt a lot more ruthless than the 3d one. i feel like p3re didn't make it seem as serious as it should've been...
Nah, the introduction to the Velvet room was better in the Original, plus Igor looks more menacing. Some scenes in the original, were more dark and menacing, perfect for that atmosphere. Still overall, visually the new one is better.
crazy how the voice cast sounds so similar, yet different from the og. I'm glad they're giving other actors, unkown actors a chance perform. I used to think Troy Baker can't be in every game but after what feels like two decades.....
Hell no. RE4 demake was an embarrassing piece of shit, that totally ruined the two most important aspects of the OG: Fun gameplay, and the fun characters.
@@GugureSuxdemake? LOL being able to move whole shooting, parry knife, luis & ashley got character improvement make Remake objectively better overall, for the most part
the dorection and atmosphere are much more unsettling in the og animated segments but the more realistic characters help to enforce the themes much more, shame they dont really seem to retain an older teen appearence, i know 5 didnt also, but in p3r they seemm more adultish to me somehow
it makes me sad how the art style in reload just looks generic and boring compared to the old one... the old one had more personality and a intention behind it which they managed to convey it very well
Agreed. Like how Classic Anime from the old 80's and 90's had this unique and amazing look to them that brings out such personality and care in their character seems lost to time. Not to say the new style isn't bad, but every Anime seems to adopt this style more.
@@viruschris3160 yeah i agree u_u since the sprites use the same style they also look less expressive compared to the old ones.. like i swear im trying not to be a hater but these things are so disappointing omg.. wish they tried imitating the old style instead of using this new one
The opening was so much better paced and directed in the original. The shots were a lot more interesting there, too. The close ups, dutch angles and warped perspectives worked really well for it, Reload's looks really flat by comparison. I also just prefer the character design and shading in the original, it reminds me a lot of Lain.
@@Bruh_but_why what a stupid comment. I can write a manga now that’s for norimes, it doesn’t mean it’s going to blow up. Persona was NOT always mainstream - you really think it was in the PS1 generation? I’ll gladly gatekeep if it keeps idiots from playing the games.
I think the og looks better . Don't get me wrong the reload looks amazing but just the gritty look of the og is what add character to it . The reload just looks like persona 5 but with persona 3 overlaying it
for some reason despite all that original shortcoming and less anime styled gameplay(like the dumb AI or something my friend says) i prefer it over the reload especially the anime FMV cutschene instead of in engine cutschene
Going to go against what everyone is saying and say that Reload (mostly) looks better than the original. Besides the dorm room and a few smaller details, Reload just looks much cooler in my opinion, keeping gloomy colors (again, minus exceptions like the dorm room) but also looking flashier. The original scenes and graphics don't look that polished in my opinion, they almost look more like a beta or test version in some cases (like the battle UI).
Yeah and if they really wanted to get into the mood, the game provides you the option of changing your brightness setting as many of the complaints about this game is how bright it is especially indoors. But that's only the default setting because it's been standardized for all players, including the ones who've never played the original. With that said, the thing I can agree on are that the anime cut scenes being less stylized but that's also been standardized for the modern audience which can't be help since that's the trajectory Atlus is aiming for when it comes to their games.
Reading the comments, I’m starting to think I’m the only person who likes Reloads cutscenes more 😭 It’s almost certainly a me problem, but a lot of the original cutscenes feel way too zoomed in on everything. I feel like I can barely tell what’s even happening. Although, I do think the Thanatos cutscene hits a lot less in 3D. That specific OG cutscene is perfect.
Also I’ve noticed that a lot of peoples “problems with Reload” are actually problems with Portable, that went unnoticed, and were then adapted for Reload. Not like that changes anybody’s opinions, but I still think it’s an interesting thing to note.
My problem with the persona 3 reloas cutscenes are the honestly boring cinematography. The original had some amazingly dynamic shots that really brought out the eeriness of its environment, and the violence of the initial awakening scene. This combined with the more contrasting colours worked so incredibly well. Although, I never personally liked the environmental aspects of the original, because it was personally quite boring, aside from the dorm room.
I think the og anime cutscene is still holds up, even better sometimes. It has a lot of 90s and 2000 VHS anime energy when computers hasn't able to support 2D animators well enough, had to go fully your hands painting on celluloid sheets. Yes they couldn't compare to modern animations on lighting, realistic and smoothness. But the darker mood, simplicity on colors, or pause and flash over the scenery are perfectly fits persona 3's story vibe.
I actually agree. Animators on older projects sometimes had to be really creative to get around the technological limitations. IMO, that could make for some gripping art. Not to say all modern animation is bad haha, I don’t think that.
The original Persona 3 opening is heavily inspired by Serial Experiments Lain, which the director was probably a fan of. The new opening really lacks that influence, and so lacks the dark and heavy atmosphere of the original.
The original Awakening cutscene for the protagonist is literally the best in the franchise (I got into Persona amongst 2 years ago now, I haven’t played FES or P3 Original it’s just that good, sure Reload fixed all of my major problems with P3’s story, probably due to more accurate translations, but no one can deny the Original P3 felt way more intense.)
I think they did a good job with the in game awakening scene, although it wouldve been cool to see it with updated 2D animation. Also I wish they kept the heartbeat before Makoto used the evoker. Opening scene is so much better in original. Like the cuts between different parts of the environment and cutting in and out to burn my dread last battle was so unnerving and one hell of a memorable start to a game, and it's a lot more bland and straightforward how it's done in Reload. There's like no artistic direction like there was in the original. Like they did not need to make Yukari say those lines basically explaining what she's thinking, when it was conveyed so much better without it, and made it feel much more real and intense.
I like the fact that the og is more creepy and dark 'cause it match with the story but I'm glad I played the reload, I really love the art style, the soundtrack and also the mood, they did a great job making it more appealing. I know people loves the og version but I think has aged badly
what I loved about the OG P3 was it was simply... gritty. it wasn't trying to be pretty unlike P3R. It intentionally made its animation like that to set the tone of the game... the game is supposed to be really really gritty and dark and just flat out uncomfortable.... pretty much what death is about. dark and uncomfortable to see and experience. P3R looks so generic. its literally devolved into just another anime game... instead of an experience of living a life that ends in suic!de
While I agree with you that the atmosphere is weaker. To me persona 3's greatest strength was the darker atmosphere and story that still felt like an SMT game with dating sim elements. Whereas persona 4 and persona 5 don't really feel like SMT games to me (though are still great). P3R artstyle makes it look like persona 5. The story is still great. And gameplay is much improved. So i disagree that it's not just another anime game, because it's still better than 99% of them. But the atmosphere is quite a bit weaker, :-/. So from a story perspective, it's not the best way to play this game.
Both openings are definitely a product of their time. Reload is pretty clean and is CG by todays anime standards. The original on the other hand, really reminds you of the rough and hand drawn anime of the early and mid 2000s. One that comes to mind is Boogiepop Phantom and many other anime during that time.
I think the original cutscenes had a better setup, simple things like not remaining on one picture for too long etc. it just came off as more disturbing and dark, but Reload definitely looks better graphics wise. I'm just glad they kept the blood in the awakening scene.
Reload is absolutely better in my opinion but I still really love the look of the ps2 version. When I see that opening play all of the sudden I'm fifteen again, downloading this random anime game called P3fes onto my ps3 not knowing how much it would actually shape how I interact with video games. Even though Reload is the best way to play it nowadays, I very firmly believe that the ps2 version's visuals still hold up super well.
I know in ATLUS games of recent years, they've had much better Yukari character models compared to the more simple versions we had for the original PS2 era Persona 3 and P3:Portable. That said, Yukari's model in Reload is *amazing*. She was already my favorite companion in P3 and a perfect friend for FemC in P3:Portable. She looks fantastic here. I still can't get over the voice actor change for Akihiko with the English one. The old one had this cool and very distinct voice.
I dislike how they changed how the MC acted while walking around, in the school he didn't have a shoulder bag because he carried his books under his arm. And the fact you can't run around with your hands inside your pockets anymore, he'll immediately take them out if you do start running in the remake. I don't know, I think it gave the MC more character or something...
Don't know if I was the only one to do this, but I would always wait for the MC to put his hands into his pockets before I started moving or walking around. Probably just a small nitpick for me, but I missed those little awkward moments the MC had
Pretty graphics at the cost of the overall vibe. I prefer the original's look too and many of the scenes that were rendered in 3rd were just better in their old anime style version.
Reload definitely should have used 2d animation during the first fight. The 3d animation just looks goofy such as Orpheus transforming into Thanatos and when it crushes the arm of the shadow.
The 3d looks nice but I'm kinda sad they replaced so many of the 2d animated cinematics with 3d ones. They're easier to animate, I know, but the 2d just looks so mucn better to me
I remember back in the day when I first saw Persona 3, I thought it was a horror game (To my defense, I was a young teen lmao). Like the atmosphere it delivered in the Prologue was absolutely insane. Everything was so fast and overstimulating, you had no goddamn clue what was happening and why people are trying to shoot themselves. I feel like that vibe really got lost in the Remake. Even at that part where you sign the contract the MC's just going towards the contract like "lol okay whatever", while the OG Cutscene shows him genuinely being confused and scared about what's happening.
The original opening scene is definitely creepier and more atmospheric than the remake. Also Yukari's "Who's there ?" sounds a lot more dramatic .The whole build up is more tense and menacing in the OG despite the low budget animation.
Idk why people like the original more, the og is more gloomy but i like the colorful lighting in reload, since i feel like reload is more stylish with the characters and environment, i think the less muted colors go well with that aesthetic

So far my only problem of reload is that little too bright for the atmosphere compare to the original more dark and at menacing style.

Its not even a "nostalgia" argument here as normies would say,

i do like the og has that switching chamber when selection an option in your turn
Idk the og felt a little awkward to me. Its not as cool as I remembered it. I think they improved in p3r.
I prefer the atmosphere of P3 but tbh I never really loved the chibi-esque characters in older personas
@@trotic708i disagree on that even the opening og itself already foreshadowing “you will die”
this p3r just pretty much p5 version with too many bright colors
I felt like the music side is actually improve over old one & I know most peeps can't move on from OG female singer but the new battle theme song when you approaching shadow from behind is absolute banger & even the new opening theme are really good
Honestly with all life quality change like gameplay & Tartarus overhaul level design it's hard to go back to OG P3Fes,, especially those new art style 2D model looks a lot better in Reload seeing Fuuka & Elizabeth in much better agle, shape & way cuter makes me happy enough because I'm not a fan of their 2D art style in OG .... even tough we all can agree OG gloomy art direction looks better in OG but the new art direction is still looks very appealing to the eye, at least P3R still very much look alike Old P3 & much more close to P3 Movie counterparts, funny enough P3 movie art direction are close to P4 & P5 but nobody complain LoL
Holy shit these were my EXACT thoughts when i first played reload its kinda creepy
Yup, my thoughts exactly. I can tell they pretty much took away most of the dark atmosphere of P3 and just turned it into Persona 5.

Official tier list goes as follows:
1. P3 Movie
2. P3 / FES
3. P3 Reload
4. P3 Portable

Ive played a few hours of P3R and that feeling the intro had in the original is gone.

the mc awakening on reload feels really awkward and plain dull its like he was forced compared to ps2 and the movie way more intense
reloading cutscene animation and sound are disappointing
The original animation was better. Since Persona wasn't the hit it is today, the creators took bolder artistic risks, using a variety of angles and making unique stylistic choices. Reload, in contrast, feels like a Hollywood take, playing it safe with formulaic elements that are known to work commercially.
Yeah. once i grown up, i realized that i like obscure stuff better.
You couldn't be more wrong.
The original Persona 3's artistic style wasn't born out of wanting to deliver a more "daring" proposal but because of budget issues. Persona 3 was going to be Atlus'
last game before closing so it had very little funding, this led to the decision to go for a slower, static and abstract style when making the scenes because it was cheaper to animate.
People seem to forget that this isn't the first time Atlus has ignored the direction of the original P3, as the movies have nothing of that artistic style. Now that Atlus has money they decided to do something more dynamic because now they had the money to do what was originally planned
This brings us to Reload which, having the budget that its predecessor didn't have, doesn't try to get closer to the original but to the movies
Yukari looks beautiful in the remake.

It was impossible to have the cutscenes with in-game graphics in the original, so they had to animate all of it, which gave it the distinct art style.
In the modern we have a lot more in in-game graphics, which allow for lengthier and more clear and fluid sequences without as many cuts, which lets us much better follow the action. while i think p3re is a step up from the original, the thing that's definitely lacking the most is the art direction. i think the character portraits are gorgeous, but it really feels as if they sacrificed the gritty and despondent atmosphere that the original had. everything is way too bright in this game, including the ui like the textbox (like why is it that vibrant blue? it doesn't look good with a lot of the environments...)
i loved the dull tones in the original game because it perfectly reflects how the MC viewed the world. plus, the original opening cutscene had a really overwhelming, loud and bustling feeling in the city that was almost painful to watch vs how beautiful and busy the city is in reload. and there's the whole added dialogue to yukari trying to use the evoker, which when i first watched it i found to be really unnecessary because the whole tenseness from that scene was over how it looks like this random girl is literally about to off herself in silence (aside from her panting and the running water), constantly contrasting with the obnoxious liveliness of the city.
also i get 3d animation is less expensive and also easier than 2d, but i felt like changing the scene of the MC awakening his persona lost a lot of its coolness(? edginess?) because of the 3d animation, that imo i wasn't really a fan of. he didn't really hesitate as much as he did in the original--he was clearly shaking because for all he knew, he was just holding a gun that he was about to literally shoot himself with. the 2d animation of thanatos also felt a lot more ruthless than the 3d one. i feel like p3re didn't make it seem as serious as it should've been...

I also just prefer the character design and shading in the original, it reminds me a lot of Lain.
the og cinematics and graphics are so reminiscent of the time. it's so nostalgic it makes me sentimental. the early 2000s was such a different time.
0:36 IS THAT A GAY PIN ON MY ATLUS GAME??
Oh a comparison video, I sure hope the comments aren't nitpicking each little thing because of petty reasoning.
Nobody is nitpicking, Reload is just genuinely a worse intro by a longshot because it has terribly boring direction and storyboarding
You’re defo a new persona fan

this man still think persona is some underground series. Its always been for normies
@@sneakretsterYour comment history here doesn't help you much, completely egocentric
I think the og looks better . Don't get me wrong the reload looks amazing but just the gritty look of the og is what add character to it . The reload just looks like persona 5 but with persona 3 overlaying it
Older version had that Eva like edge and camara work
Even though I only played reload so far, I'll say I wish it had the atmosphere of the original, something spookier and more unnerving.
for some reason despite all that original shortcoming and less anime styled gameplay(like the dumb AI or something my friend says) i prefer it over the reload
especially the anime FMV cutschene instead of in engine cutschene
@@bananabunch4590yeah and if the game had low brightness everyonw complain the game is too dark
what in the earth hapened to these people
OG p3 fans will say that reload is soulless, but then never explain what that means.
I wish they made the cutscenes animations and darker
Gameplay and graphics wise i prefer Reload but Cinematics wise I prefer the og by a long shot
Reading the comments, I’m starting to think I’m the only person who likes Reloads cutscenes more 😭
It’s almost certainly a me problem, but a lot of the original cutscenes feel way too zoomed in on everything.
Of the many things that can be said about Persona 3 Reload, there is no denying the the quality of the animations is way better.

The remake was amazing but I still choose to original
The opening cutscene in the original is brillant and unique. In the remake it's really classic
I'll just say that the first cutscene in fes version was just peak, while Reload lacks a lot of thing, and I mean A LOT.
I feel like Reload and the OG are there own things and should be treated as such
They’re literally the same game and reload is an improvement
They’re literally the same game and reload is a downgrade
@@milesedgeworth2981 The original has 💩 graphics. Sorry not sorry. Copying my comment is not clever.
@@wtfdidijustwatch1017 That's all? You're simple and shallow. Reload was definitely made for people like you.
I'm pretty sure sacrificing your life to directly save another isn't considered suicide.
The original audio prevails the reload one in every aspect.
Both openings are definitely a product of their time. Reload is pretty clean and is CG by todays anime standards. The original on the other hand, really reminds you of the rough and hand drawn anime of the early and mid 2000s. One that comes to mind is Boogiepop Phantom and many other anime during that time.
I do love the improved textures and environments, but there’s something oddly appealing about the low-poly and damp colored models the OG provided.
I kinda like the original, as dated as it was. There’s just something about the grittiness of 2000s anime cutscenes just adds to the dark tone of P3.
I think the original cutscenes had a better setup, simple things like not remaining on one picture for too long etc. it just came off as more disturbing and dark, but Reload definitely looks better graphics wise.
I'm just glad they kept the blood in the awakening scene.
The opening in the first version is more based than the remake
Reload is absolutely better in my opinion but I still really love the look of the ps2 version. When I see that opening play all of the sudden I'm fifteen again, downloading this random anime game called P3fes onto my ps3 not knowing how much it would actually shape how I interact with video games. Even though Reload is the best way to play it nowadays, I very firmly believe that the ps2 version's visuals still hold up super well.
Absolutely crazy opinion incoming. All 3 versions of P3 are sick. I know I know, blasphemy
i want to come here and say it right now, if perosna 3 fes had the features of persona 3 reload, none of you would be on persona 3 reloads side
The fact the movie adaptation is better than the reload cutscenes show that it isn't hard to be faithful and have a higher production value.
I love how polished reloads visuals are but i absolutley hate how it lost the original game's artstyle and the feel of the original game's cutscenes.
The scene where Makoto opens the door and it shows the shot of the big ass moon reminds me of Re4 or resident evil openings in general
@@iziahbushghostwithguns7217wow how edgy

Style wise and anime cutscenes i like og more, color wise and seeing the gameplay i like the reload more
Pretty graphics at the cost of the overall vibe. I prefer the original's look too and many of the scenes that were rendered in 3rd were just better in their old anime style version.
I love how original P3 valvet room's background blinks
The old has more Drama/ darkness and i still Like the Animation Cut Scenes. But the new is Beautyfull too.
They're easier to animate, I know, but the 2d just looks so mucn better to me
it feels a lot nicer to play reload but it feels like they didn’t understand what made the cutscenes good
I remember back in the day when I first saw Persona 3, I thought it was a horror game (To my defense, I was a young teen lmao).
Also Yukari's "Who's there ?" sounds a lot more dramatic .The whole build up is more tense and menacing in the OG despite the low budget animation.
as an animation person, i really wish persona had more fluid transitions into each other, makes everything feel more alive and natural
OG has a better atmosphere but reload made exploring tartarus more fun and less of a hassle so i think they did a pretty good job with this remake
Idk why people like the original more, the og is more gloomy but i like the colorful lighting in reload, since i feel like reload is more stylish with the characters and environment, i think the less muted colors go well with that aesthetic
I freakin' knew that Reload gonna be awesome everywhere... except cutscene direction...
*Sigh*
I see they remove the iconic "burn my breaaaaaaddddd" song.
