The Guide To Creating The Perfect PiggyBack Perm

  • The piggyback perm is created with a wrapping technique where sections of the hair are rolled using two perm rods for every carved-out section, with one rod placed on top of the other. A smaller rod is usually placed at the base, and a slightly larger one on top; sometimes, depending on the client's preference, the same size curler can be used.
    The piggyback perm is mostly favoured by someone with long, heavy hair. This method ensures a uniform curl from root to end on longer hair, as the rods are piggybacked on top of each other, instead of the long hair being placed on one curler. Splitting the rolled sections into two curlers ensures even penetration of the perm solution, resulting in even curl formation.
    The piggyback wrapping technique is very different from other perms. It can be more time-consuming and somewhat challenging but offers a natural curl pattern with lots of bouncy curls, especially on thick, long hair.
    The Root Perm and the Piggyback Perm: Same Wrapping Technique, Different Approach.
    What is a root perm? A root perm is used when someone with long hair has an old existing perm with straight roots but lots of curls at the ends. The goal is to refresh the roots without damaging the length of the hair and the existing curls. The root perm wrapping technique is identical to the piggyback perm, but the key difference lies in how the perm solution is applied.
    In the piggyback perm, the solution is applied to both curlers, while in the root perm, the solution specifically targets the roots, focusing on the curler closest to the scalp, which should be wound to accommodate the regrowth area, whether it be 4 or 5 inches. The second curler towards the ends is left untouched. During rolling, it's common to spray the ends of the second roller with conditioner to shield them from the solution. This method concentrates on re-perming the roots, considering the hair regrowth area closest to the scalp rather than the length of the hair.

    Thank you SO much for uploading this video. I have been doing perms on my clients for years but I haven't wrapped a piggy back perm since beauty school and I have a client who needs it. Not only was this informative about the piggy back wrap but the application, rinsing, and neutralizing portions had a lot of good info. From a stylist approaching 10 years in the business, I really appreciate you guys for sharing your knowledge coming from over 30 years of perming! Wow thank you this video is really great!

    This was fascinating to watch. My grandma was a beautician YEARS ago. I could never get my hair to hold a perm, but always fascinated at those who can!

      My hair doesn't even hold a curl and I've got wavy hair.
      I've been hold if your hair hold curl well with heat, it might be very good with perms.

    This is a great wrap for people who have fine, longer hair but too fine for spiral rods when you’re having difficulty getting getting the rod tight enough to stay in place or tight enough for a strong curl pattern.

    • @teamcougars
      @teamcougars ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s also a good wrap for a directional more natural looking curl ❤

      @@ClassichairdesignCa To make tighter curls wouldn’t you need smaller rods than the white & purple ones? Because those are the ones you used in the video & she ended up with waves.

    Thank you so much for all your tutorials. Can you please advice if hoping to achieve tight curls would the One n Only low ammonia texturizing perm kit be strong enough or is it best to get a stronger one?this is done on my virgin dark brown long hair. Thank you in advance💙

    I've read that you should roll the second rod in the opposite direction of the first for a more uninterrupted curl pattern but I can see that you're not doing that. Does that mean either way is fine or should you avoid doing that? I saw a comment on a video with that technique that had a failed result but when i read about the piggyback method they insist on rolling the opposite way. Yours is the first tutorial I've come across that has rolled in the same direction with both rods.

    • @ClassichairdesignCa
      @ClassichairdesignCa  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there. Yes, both ways are correct. Personally and from experience, rolling in the same direction gives a more consistent natural curl.

    As a perm technician of 52 years, I think you used zotos by the colours of the perm bottles. Have you had any supply problems with the products. As we have in UK I tend to do 5 to 6 perms a day as of 2022 now in 2023

    Thank the Lord my hair is naturally like this. My mama used to perm my hair all the time as a child and I remember that feeling of the heavy rods and my tender scalp. One day in High School I went into the bathroom with a blow dryer and some mousse and my hair has been curly ever since, no perm needed. Dad had wavy hair.

      @@ClassichairdesignCa Well, I got my perm. Do you happen to live in the Colorado Springs area??? My hair needs big help.
      Stylist would not piggyback. Said no matter how you roll it, there will be a gap with straight hair where the 2 rods meet. My hair is sh^tty now.
      She said if I layer it more, it'll look good. I dont want shorter layers than I have now.
      I wont leave my house.
      I let my hair get healthier since Feb 2021 to get this perm
