Enjoyed your reaction. Lynyrd Skynyrd is from Jacksonville, Florida. From 1973 through 1977 they made six albums with not only a multitude of hits, but the non-radio played songs are off-the-charts great as well. Ronnie Van Zant was the singer, lyric writer, and the Boss of the band. He was a street-fighting kid from Shantytown who had a photographic memory and was a very driven individual. He would force the members of the band to practice day after day in a shack in the swamp they called the Hell House until he was satisfied with the sound. Ronnie never wrote down his lyrics, they were all produced and memorized in his head. The first verse of Sweet Home Alabama was so written as he sat on a couch in the Hell House, the remainder when he left the house and went fishing in the river nearby. SHA is a response to Neil Young's two songs about the South and the legacy of slavery and racism. However, Ronnie, did not appreciate the broad brush Young used, and as your notes pointed out - the key verse to unlocking the meaning of the political parts of the song is the reference to Watergate. Most of Richard Nixon's support came from the northern States. So when Nixon proved to be a criminal, does that make everyone in the north a criminal? The lineup in the band did change some in the 73-77 years. Ed King was a guitarist for the first three albums and really contributed a lot to their early success. They had three guitarists including Gary Rossington and Allen Collins, their secret weapon on keyboards, the great Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson, a top bass player, and Bob Burns and then Atrimus Pyle on drums. They added the Honketts, Leslie Hawkins, Cassie Gaines, and JoJo Billingsley as backup singers about half way through their time. Ed King had left because Ronnie could be really hard to handle, especially when he was drinking. Cassie's brother, Steve Gaines was added in 1976 and he really rejuvenated the band. Their last album, Street Survivors was fabulous with Steve's role increasing. Street Survivors was released October 17th, 1977. Three days later on October 20th their plane ran out of fuel near Gillsburg, Mississippi and crashed into a swamp. Both pilots and the band's road manager died, Steve and his sister Cassie were killed, and we lost Ronnie Van Zant. Twenty other passengers survived, mostly with very serious injuries. Ten years later, with Ed King rejoining the band for a time, and Ronnie's younger brother Johnny taking over on vocals, the band started performing again. Today, Gary plays some with them, but is often sidelined with heart issues. Rickey Medlocke who was with the band for a time early in their career when they recorded an album in 71-72 that wasn't released until after the crash, has returned, and Johnny is still on vocals. Gary, Artimus, and Leslie are the only surviving members of the 1977 lineup. Ronnie was one of the greatest American songwriters ever, in my opinion, and we lost so much when that plane went down. Maybe do "Simple Man" next which has great lyrics, from their first album, and the lyric version of "That Smell" from their last.
It’s really amazing how complex and at times ambiguous the lyrics are. Ronnie Van Zant was a lyrical genius.
In either 1976 or 1977, both Gary Rossington and Allen had wrecks on Labor Day weekend. Gary wrecked his Torino into an Oak tree, delaying the tour. The same weekend, Allen Collins had a wreck. Both survived these accidents. I’ve been to “the Oak tree” in Jacksonville.
In October 1977, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and his sister, Cassie Gaines (one of the three backup singers) were fatally injured in the plane crash. Most of the band survived the plane crash. Allen’s wife miscarried a baby, with what would have been their third child, and she died. He was never the same. He had another car accident in about 1987, and was paralyzed from the waist down. Allen died in 1990 at only 37 years old, from pneumonia complications.
They recorded at Muscle Shoals Sounds studio, in Alabama, but they’re a Jacksonville, Florida band.

Leon did not play on Pronounced (even though he was on the cover). Ed King played bass and only Allen and Gary played guitar.

I have a strong feeling that if Ronnie was alive today he would be a Conservative like his brothers Donnie and Johnny. I notice a lot of people that post on TH-cam say otherwise but I don't agree.

Ed King one of the authors/composers of the song and was the lead guitar player you hear with the famous intro lick was a friend and I did have a chance to ask him about Neil young and he just laughed!
Our common bond was the blues. One of our favorite players and considered the best ever was Stevie Ray Vaughan!

The Allman brothers....Berry oklee..was killed a few months after his best buddy and heart of the band Dewayne Allman was kill..one block a way on motorcycles..almost all l.s was killed..his younger brother sings ..but Gray r...just died many no more are alive

It was Duane Allman and Berry Oakley of the Allman Brothers killed on motorcycles a year apart. I went to Brother Gregg's funeral years ago. I'm from their adopted home, Macon GA
