  • For years I've wanted to capture an autumn shot of the spectacular Crystal Mill in Colorado. I decided to make the epic drive from Vancouver Island all the way to the vibrant Elk Mountains but the journey presented some very unique challenges.

We (my wife and I) were there at the Mill just yesterday (9/28/21). I don’t know if this is the way things were when you were there or not. Visitors were prohibited from descending from the parking lot viewing area down to the river level. Several Private Property No Trespassing signs were posted along with a wire fence blocking access to the two trails down to the river. Plus that was an assigned watchman sitting in an ATV keeping a watchful eye on what all the visitors were doing and where they were going. That was such a bummer, I was looking forward to getting river level shots but had to resort to shooting from where you shot your first photo that you showed in your video. We rented a lifted 4x4 Jeep with 34” tires, it was a champ on that crazy road. All in all quite an adventure.

I don't know how I missed this video, just spotted it today. Living in Colorado, many local photographers feel there's nothing new left to do at the Crystal Mill beacuse it has been photographed so much and by so many photographers. Well, your compositions prove otherwise. Great shots, Gavin. Some of your very best work, IMO.

Great video and great photos. My wife and I did the same trip two weeks, minus the rain. Our plan was to drive down the the mill in our 4X4. But, when we got closer we also became leery of the road, parked the car, and hiked the four miles in. It was definitely worth it. Gorgeous scenery on the hike in that we would have missed if we drove. The mill and fall colors at the destination were amazing.

Have they removed those? Just asking for future reference. Also, we rented a UTV in Marble and drove that all the way down. Still pretty rough - big boulders on the road.
