Her husband said she was his everything, but when he watched her bash his mom’s head in, he realized she no longer looked at him as her savior but as part of a f*cked-up family. He said, “You won’t be with me after this, will you?” It’s the classic, if you don’t want me, I’ll kill you, trope. Happens irl where a couple gets divorced so the guy kills his ex-wife and kids. Or a woman rejects a man so he stalks and kills her.
I think in his case, it's more about him being terrified of being alone. He realizes that if she won't have him, he'll crawl back to his family sooner or later.
It's more about him never being good to begin with, he didn't actually loved Grace, he loved how she made him feel, like he was not like his family, typical nice guy. Daniel is the only one the be saved in this family.

It’s because Alex was inherently selfish. He didn’t want her to leave if they didn’t get married; he didn’t tell her about the game; he didn’t tell her about the hide and seek stuff; he never gave her a chance to decide any of those things for herself. So his reasons for marrying her were about him, not her. It makes his heel turn less surprising the second rewatch.

I really liked the character of Grace. I believe they touch on the fact that she grew up in the foster care system and she badly wants to belong to a family which is why Alex agreed to get married. I think it is very interesting how much she comes to regret that desire, be careful what you wish for and all that.
I was wondering why the family member that is aware of the game would willingly ask someone to marry them if this is the end result... Like, if you love them why do this?
@@movieholic-92 right! I think he says that she would have left him if he hadn't proposed. But if you really love her let her go rather than take the risk on the game.
I really love the fact that they made the curse real. It would have still been a strong ending if the curse was just an urban legend that turned out to be fake and the family had to deal with the consequences of their blind faith, but the fact that it was real was so jarring and unexpected it worked really well. Love Samara Weaving as well, and I wish you could have included her curse-filled tirade after that car drove off and left her. It was one of my favorite parts and I could not stop laughing in the cinema.
For me, Alex's turn happens because he loves his mom. If I remember correctly, granted I haven't seen the movie since theatres, she was the only one that really talked to him like a normal person and didn't truly dislike him for leaving the family. She is happy that he's back and that Grace brought him back. Therefore, when Alex arrives in the room and watches Grace kill his mother, his internal switch flips and he buys into the whole gimmick of the family. So, in a way it makes him seem like a tragic character because he only gives in after losing his mother. Then, in the end, you realize he is just a weak, infantile character that will say anything to be on the right side of the events.
@Christopher VanGogh Thanks for the response. Good looking out! I forgot about the connection to Daniel. I must again admit that I haven't seen the movie since it came out. Is there a line of dialogue that says he saw the Le Bail or was it just implied? Overall, I just need to watch this movie again because I remember really liking it.
In my opinion, I think Alex turns because, subconsciously, he does believe in the ritual even if he denies it and calls it bullshit to start with (maybe because of seeing the devil as a child? I forgot about that part). If he truly didn't believe in it then he would have just eloped with Grace or been honest and told her what could happen and never brought her to the family to begin with. Instead he was scared that not following the tradition would cause him and his family to die so he selfishly kept Grace in the dark to avoid the risk. That paired with his brother dying and Grace killing his mom right in front of him probably pushed him over the edge to ultimately side with his family. I don't think he's truly evil per se, but I do wholeheartedly believe that he is a very selfish character.
Alex is a selfish dick for marrying anyone. Think about it: if you loved someone would you take the risk, no matter how slim, of this happening to them? I wouldn't.
I have a slightly different take on why Alex did what he did. in the responses some people brought up a few things that I agree with but also this point. Alex loved her, "She was his Everything" but he understood that after everything she had been put through she would not stay with him. So it came down to this for Alex. 1. If I let her go and the curse is real, we all die. 2. If the curse is not real, and I let her go she will leave me and probably call the cops and we all go to Prison. 3. If I sacrifice her and the curse is real we all live. 4. If I sacrifice her and the curse is not real, well at least we do not all go to prison. 5. The only way they would find out if the curse was real would be to lose the game and not end up dead.
Alex turns because his character is selfish. Soon as he realises she won't be staying with him anymore after this is over he no longer cares about protecting her. You even see the moment where the light switches in his head.
The ending with Grace sitting on the steps smoking a cigarette always reminds me of Winona Ryder at the end of Heathers (1989). One of my favorite 80’s movies. If y’all haven’t seen it yet, check it out.💜💜💜
i think the funniest thing is that if they had decided not to kill the girl after she won they all probably would have lived. she played the game and that was truly the only rule. Otherwise if they did just have to play and not win then what does Le Bail get out of it? Just getting a kick out of them killing each other? A lot of people are suggesting ‘You’re Next’ on the comments and I second that! You’re Next has a very competent final girl, and the gore is *chef’s kiss* lol.
The ending made me imagine the curse as a disheveled, office worker looking dude running into the room saying, “sorry I’m late, boss. Traffic was nuts.” 🤣
You gotta remember the fact that the guy married her and brought her home without telling her about all this stuff. He didn't give her a choice because he knew that she probably (definitely) wouldn't go. He could have just not married her, or told her about it and not brought her home.
I love this film. I like how they paint the story with Mr. La Bail (which in this case is satan) and that’s how they earned their wealth through board games because they sold the family name. They think if they don’t play the game or kill her that they’re all going to die. I like how they make you think it was all a big lie, and then flips it again and you find out it’s actually true lol The guy in the chair at the end is Mr. La Bail. He toasts to Grace because she won the game
Fun Fact: Le Bail is actually an anagram for the name Belial, which is a term occurring in the Hebrew Bible that later became personified as the devil in Jewish and Christian texts.
It feels rare these days that we get such an odd and gory horror comedy released in theaters by a major studio. The premise feels like a trashy straight-to-video movie from the 80s. That's why I fucking love this movie.
This is one of my all time favourite films, and the fact that aunt helene is played by the actor who was also in Cube, another all time fave, was icing on the top. I reckon you guys would enjoy Cube, a sci-fi/thriller/horror. It's cheap and showing its age for sure, but such a unique plot.
This movie is an absolute riot. It's well acted and hilarious. The sister-in-law killing the maids is hysterical. You also cut out the "fucking rich people!" line that is the highlight of the movie.
After the husband saw his mother killed, he said “you’ll never be with me now will you”... he lost her anyways bc of the family game so he just gave up fighting it
You guys are awesome. I'm glad you guys enjoyed the dark comedy aspect of this film. Modern horror movies are definitely reinventing the wheel with Hereditary, Ready or Not, and Midsommar. Another one I think you guys would like is Better Watch Out. I would warn that the trailer gives away a twist so maybe don't watch that but basically it centers around a babysitter and two kids who find themselves in the middle of a home invasion, but not everything is as it seems. That's about the most I can say about it without spoiling it because on your first time watching the twist is amazing and it's very well acted, so check that out if you guys are interested. It's set during Christmas time so maybe more towards December? But either way I think you guys would love it
This was one of my favorite movies of 2019. For more horror-comedy, I'd recommend Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, especially now that you two have gotten very well versed in classic slasher movie tropes.
I and my friends had a lot of fun with this. Samara Weaving is fast becoming a favourite of mine. Between this, The Babysitter and her small role at the end of Ash vs The Evil Dead first season, she is getting a nice little horror background.
26:16 I thought about not having the opening sequence. It would be a great move if there was a planned sequel or trilogy in the works, but for a movie that exists by itself (although undoubtedly influenced by similar movies) it was best to give us something to fear during the wedding. It keeps us invested in the plot. The simple cinematography of the wedding being a small affair is wise, I think. Finding tone can be the most difficult thing if you're combining comedy and horror, and I think these guys nailed it.
A great wee British werewolf horror film to watch is Howl, it's about a train that breaks down in a forest and the passengers and train conductor find them selves in a fight for survival against a pack of werewolves, it's a wee gem of a horror film and the werewolf effects are brilliantly done.
31:45 Tom, Shaun: it's *VERY* rare that I disagree with your interpretations but dudes, in this one you missed the mark when it comes to Alex's motives. You say that you don't understand why he'd turn on Grace, and that his character was 'heading in the right direction'. If anything, it's the opposite: he starts off determined to save Grace; but then his mother's speech to him has a slight effect; then he sees his brother and mother brutally murdered; then.... and this is key... he says, "You won't be with me after this, will you". He realises Grace is lost to him, so he may as well side with his family. But the most chillingly obvious fact of all is that he was always torn between Grace and his family, otherwise he'd never have put her in that situation. His explanation to her is weaksauce. Fact is, the film never intends Alex to be anything but a douchebag... his brother Daniel is the closest the film has to a 'hero'.
Yes the Americans call it Clue... the film is fabulous with a stellar cast! So glad you chose this I wanted to see it at the cinema but missed the boat!
I thought he turned on her because he realized she wouldnt love him and stay with him after what happened that night. Which is why he asked her "You wont be with me after this will you?". He lost his brother, mother, and wife all in one night. Not to mention, the legal implications to their actions that night and his role in them.
Actually, boys, Ready or Not works like a very good double feature with the Babysitter with Samara Weaving following right after (but do NOT look on the trailers or the box art. just go in blind. its so much more fun that way)
She didn't inherit the ritual. She won the game and therefore never really "joined" the family. She was legally married, but that doesn't count for the rules of the game. The nod the ghost/demon/whatever gave her wasn't a "see you soon" nod, it was a "job well done, our business is over" nod.
This movie is crazy and brilliant! Also, Weaving's (bride) screaming is next level! I'm gonna rate it 8.7. P.s.: when the groom first tries to help and says that he still wanted to marry her so as not to lose her, even though marrying her could kill her - something she was completely unaware of when deciding to marry him - you are clued in to how selfish he can be. So when you really take that in, him turning on her when realizing she won't stay isn't that shocking at all.

@Derrick Burris ugh I can never find that movie for free, I have so many channels and it’s always a pay movie lol. Is it worth the rental fee?
@Derrick Burris I think she’s in the new Bill and Ted movie too lol.
A lot of people are suggesting ‘You’re Next’ on the comments and I second that! You’re Next has a very competent final girl, and the gore is *chef’s kiss* lol.
The true lesson of this film is meet your partner's family before you marry into it.
This and Cabin in the Woods are two of my favorite movies ever, their blends of humor and real scares and gore are so refreshing and fun.
The Cube is so good.
I knew I recognized her from somewhere! It bothered me so much! Thanks for lifting the weight off! I love Cube!
Holy shit I never made the connection! That’s so cool ahah
Damn! Was she Holloway in Cube?! I love that film, hate the sequels though.
She’s like the first smart blonde woman who hasn’t tripped and actually survived till the end.😂
This movie is an absolute riot. It's well acted and hilarious. The sister-in-law killing the maids is hysterical. You also cut out the "fucking rich people!" line that is the highlight of the movie.
Yesssssssss. one of the best horrors of last few years and one of the best final girls!
I love the guy who died for her i wish there would be a part two where he survived and that the devil would spare him bc well ya know
After the husband saw his mother killed, he said “you’ll never be with me now will you”... he lost her anyways bc of the family game so he just gave up fighting it
You guys are awesome. But either way I think you guys would love it
Yes! Better watch out is so so good!! It’s on my Christmas horror watch list lol.
Yes better watch out!
Ricky!! Love your videos
This is a top tier underrated film and I’m like how dare it not get more recognition
I can’t help but imagining Bokoblin’s flying through the air every time she screams.
You should watch “you’re next” and “would you rather” and “the babysitter”
Oh!! You're Next would be awesome!! Actually, all of them are pretty good, I'm just biased
Excellent compilation 🔰
You’re Next is absolutely brilliant
you're next is so underrated. shame they removed it from netflix!
@@CS-pg4go they did, but it’s on HULU :)
bruh i love her expression SOO much at the end when the ghost shows up, gives her a nod of approval and she's just like "... k" :)))))))))
Tom's face when they're exploding...LOL!!! XD
This was one of my favorite movies of 2019. For more horror-comedy, I'd recommend Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, especially now that you two have gotten very well versed in classic slasher movie tropes.
Yes yes yes, one of my favourites!
Couldn’t agree more 🔰
samara weaving is such a gem, and this movie is one of my favorites from the past few years!! such a fun time
I and my friends had a lot of fun with this. Samara Weaving is fast becoming a favourite of mine. Between this, The Babysitter and her small role at the end of Ash vs The Evil Dead first season, she is getting a nice little horror background.
Highly recommend "You're Next" if you haven't seen it.
Another modern film you should react to is HUSH so good!
Hush is absolutely a must watch!
I loved Hush!
@@venusinscorpio7123 it was so good!
@@jasonkeene9834 i feel and hope they will like it
@@kiahwilliams687 Yes, and underrated!
Love that @zzavid mentioned you guys in his own reaction to this on his youtube. My two faves 💓
Samara Weaving is also fantastic in the netflix original The Babysitter
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍🔰
2019 was such a great year. We got Parasite, 1917 and Ready or Not, my absolute favorite movies of the last few years!
And joker
you can just tell it’s gonna become a classic
Samara Weaving’s banshee scream is iconic
Yes. He was selfish since the beginning...
I love Samara Weaving, she's a great actress, pretty much love everything she's been in.
Henry Czerny is sooo good at being two faced in his deliveries. He's a phenomenal actor.
OMG...that "rum ham" shirt is killin' me. Love it...
Please do “Would You Rather” on Netflix. That movie is absolutely insane and you guys would be sooo invested in it until the end LMAOO.
I. Love. This. Film.
It’s the only movie that I can show to anyone with a guarantee they’ll like it. They always do.
This makes a fun double feature with Knives Out
You both definitely need to watch you're next! It's such an underrated movie and the main character is such a badass!
The molecular combustion kind of shocked me. My jaw literally dropped.
You're Next is a film which I think you might enjoy, given that you liked this.
Top 5 horror movie for sure. Love it.
Yeah I think they'd really enjoy that
This was my favorite movie of 2019 honestly
Actually, boys, Ready or Not works like a very good double feature with the Babysitter with Samara Weaving following right after (but do NOT look on the trailers or the box art. just go in blind. its so much more fun that way)
I love this movie! Very underrated and Samara is amazing 🖤
Really enjoyed this film. The Hunt (2020) has the same fun energy.
I just like the end where she realizes she inherits this "ritual" as the last standing member of the family
Well alex did die so she isnt married to him anymore. So i suppose she isnt a le domas and can get married without the ritual
She didn't inherit the ritual. She won the game and therefore never really "joined" the family. She was legally married, but that doesn't count for the rules of the game. The nod the ghost/demon/whatever gave her wasn't a "see you soon" nod, it was a "job well done, our business is over" nod.
I really like your reaction videos, I just wish I could hear you both better. Would you consider adding mics to your setup?
We do have mics, not sure why you can’t hear us as we can hear ourselves just fine on our devices 😊
You probably just had your computer on mute. Unmute it and then watch again.
The ending is so shocking the first time, hilarious, and satisfying.
the movie is a great twist for the 'final girl' trope. and they have us guessing if the wager/curse was real.
When Grace was bashing Becky’s face with that brick repeatedly, the catharsis I felt was liberating...
"You're Next" should def be on your to- watch list. Ready or Not surprised me when i saw it, never heard of it and just stumbled on it. Fun movie :)
Hah, I sing the run and hide song to my puppies every time they misbehave.
So when you really take that in, him turning on her when realizing she won't stay isn't that shocking at all.
you need to review "You're Next"!GREAT FLICK!
I remember this actress from Home & Away she has much more range here
First time watching this movie and I had to watch this reaction two times, haha, I really loved this movie and it might actually be a new favorite for me; it felt original and the main actress was perfect for it 😻👏🏼 Now I have to watch the whole movie on my own - thank you for showing it! 😺
One of my favorite horror films from 2019 and just in general of 2019.
The ending makes it SO worth it! What a night, geez!
This was a perfect out of nowhere July movie. Fun theater experience for sure.
I literally sung the goonies bit a few seconds before you guys! 😂
Great vid as always.
I love the scene of Kristian Bruun looking up how to videos on TH-cam trying to get his weapon to work.
“Whats are the rules? They’re so vague. What kind of game? There’s only 1 game that kills? What ritual?”
Movie ends:
“There’s too much information. 7.5”
🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
Been binge watching your reactions. You guys are the best
Please tell me you are watching [rec] soon? If so i would recommend watching in the dark, it definitely adds to the experience!
You NEED to watch Tucker and Dale VS Evil!
I really think you should watch "Cabin in the woods"
Its one of my favorite movies ever and believe me. Its not what you think its going to be.
They've already seen it, though there's no video of it. They comment on it at some point towards the end of this video, comparing the humor in both Cabin and this one.
@@ace-of-teacups ahhhh I must have missed that bit. Cheers
Time for you guys to watch You're Next and The Guest. You won't be disappointed.
your faces were priceless, i love seeing people react to this movie
Watched this for the first time a couple days ago. Excited to see your reactions to it. 👍
Samara Weaving is related to actor HUGO WEAVING(UNCLE) !!
I love this film and I'm happy you both enjoyed it 🤩 samara weaving is just awesome and her scream is everything 😍 her reaction to seeing mr labelle 😅😅 Daniel changing his mind and was due to seeing grace all bloody and killing his mum and him realizing what she's been through and the death of his brother in my opinion ☺
YAY!! 😁 It's finally released from the bowels of TH-cam Hell.
Samara KILLED this role. I love her screams and her snorting while laughing is so cute😂 such a fun movie
The movie "the babysitter" is the same actress who plays the bride in the ready or not you guys will love that movie
Ready or not is one my favorite horror movies with the Collector. I don't know why. They're not amazing but I love them.
"Blue Velvet" will freak you out. It's not a horror but a most-intense thriller.
