Thanks for Watching! Follow us on Facebook / edzgarage Checkout my other channel KoolVidz / @koolvidz9638 This is a pretty easy job. The parts cost $15.
Thanks for posting this. I just rebuilt the starter on my 1960 Ford 601 tonight, and referred to your video before and during the process... it was very helpful. Love all your tractor videos!
Thanks for the useful post, we are working on a 53 Jubilee that just plain worked for 20+ years. We put off buying a 6 volt battery too long and as you know volts down cause amps up and killed the starter and never having a book on it we went looking for vids today and I suspected we had to pull the oil filter but working on it in the rain at 45F went in to learn more, seems hard to find folks that even know of these now. Yes ours is 6 volt positive ground with an original generator
I just put the starter back together for the f250. All I did was a good spring cleaning though lol Awsome video Ed. Love when you do videos like this. Or have no choice but to lol. Hope your still felling good.
I have a 800 Ford tractor that has the same problem, called local Napa, to my surprise they had the brushes in stock $6.93 for the set. Thanks for the Video
Great. This video will help me resolve problems with my Ford 2000 4 cyl gas starter. It is corroded inside. Maybe I can clean it up or get another starter.
Thanks. In the end, I used a propane torch to heat the posts, put a puddle of solder on it, let it cool, then soldered the copper wire into the puddle. The solder appears to have a solid bond now.
My starter quit right in the middle of planting potatoes. Your video waved the day! I was able to disassemble the starter, clean it up and get it working again. Something i noticed is that the prongs that hold the springs were twisted a little to keep the springs from falling off while you slip the end back onto the brush after assembly.
@chuckgibson0 No, didn't have any trouble getting it apart. You many have to apply a little force, but be careful, the end cap is cast. I used 60/40 solder. Thanks for the comment and good luck on your starter.
Thanks for posting. I'm having difficulty with attaching the new bushings with solder, not getting a good solder ..... did you have any problems there? - I should note my starter is slightly different, doesn't have the bending post.
How did you clean the armature. Mine was sitting up for some time...Insects or something built a nest or something in there. I don't know how they got in there but they did.
I have a 57 Ford 860 and the bendix has hung up on the starter flywheel the last time I started. The Highpitch noise alerted me to an issue & immediate shutdown. I have since attempted to remove the starter with no luck. once unbolted it will slide out about 1/2-3/4 inch then hangs up on something internally. Other than splitting the tractor any suggestions on removal?
The video does not address cleaning up the commutator. Obviously that was done while working on this starter. Do you have a technique suitable for the average home shop? The 8N starter I am repairing also has a loose brush holder.
I have the same starter in a 1955 ford f250. for the life of me I cannot get this started. I replace the spark plugs, the coil, rebuild the carburetor, and new fuel pump. it's on a 6 volt system. the engine turns but really slowly and it still won't start. I took out the starter and I saw a really large rats nest behind it in the Bell housing area. I cleaned it out as much as possible. and the engine is still dragging. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the starter or if I need to separate the transmission from the engine to clean that area out. any ideas?
I found the the set of four i needed for a 46 ford super deluxe car at napa for $9 and some change, had to order, but only waited overnight for them to come the next morning.
@craig1974 I know what you mean. This was pretty painless though. Checkout my vid on the Audi heater core if you want to see this before that dis-assembly. lol
@IHcubcadet Thanks! That tractor sounds interesting. Maybe you will need me to pull it out with out Dodge diesel beast! lol Make a vid of the tractor if you can.

IMMATURENGINEERING Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for posting this. I have a 48 8n and need to change my starter out. My dad bought me a new one for my birthday, haven't had the time.
Great video Ed!! Your instructional videos are some of the best on the Tube.

Got a Ford 8N I’m working on now, and this was dead on. When I took off the starter, I had a brush contact issue from the last time I worked on it.
i was hoping to see the post replaced. also, would've been nice to see how you resurfaced the contacts on the armature. machined? filed? sanded?
good job! starters and generators are pretty easy to repair if you know your way around them!

cool that you could still get parts. good repair.
@pickNgrin66 Thanks for the Comment! I'm glad I was able to help.
@tom58c Thanks Tom! It's nice to know people like to watch my vids.

Did you clean the armature? Might want to explain how to do that. An informative video thanks.

Great! Thanks for watching.
@TractorWorld Feeling much better now thanks for asking.

Great video Ed but I will advise you to not use Fram oil filters as they are notorious for collapsing internally which of course will restrict flow.
I agree great video, but I’ve seen the orange can of death fail also
@805ROADKING Wow, thanks a lot! I appreciate the kind words.
Good vid - thanks (just wish you had shown how you 'repaired' the damage to the armature)
You really put on a great how-to video, well done my friend.
;]
You need a lot of heat. Use a propane torch with a soldering attachment to get enough heat to make the solder flow.
Good luck and the replacement and thanks for watching!
Thanks for showing/teaching us!
thanks for posting this , its gonna help me out a lot soon
@mrdeisel335 Thanks for the correction Buddy. I should have been more specific. The commutator is the current switch attached to the armature.
Super helpful vid. Thanks for posting.

did you use emery cloth on the armature to clean up the pitting??
@GatheringSticks Thanks! Parts are still pretty easy to get.
so if the armacher or w.e looks like that it can still be good to put back in?
@arnauts12 Good luck with your starter. I hope this vid helps.

Great info as always.
@wolff18 The same thing happened to my 8n. It didn't seem to hurt anything, so I forgot about.
Do you know what is the make of this starter I need to fix the mine
@93sonyjoe1 I'm not sure what the problem is. Good luck!

If you get a meter and check the insulation on the armature as well.
@TNJfarm Thank you!
Very good
@TheCubanMan728 Thanks a lot!
Great Video!
@ChadLand011 Hi, tell me witch vid the tractor is in and I'll try to tell you what it is.
Nice Job ....thanks for the vid
Cool! good work.
Thanks for the comment!
Thanks!! great video
Thanks. Very useful.
@carnivore10 Thank you for the comment!
@TheSaturnV Thanks a lot!
Thanks!
My 9n starter needs new brushes where did you order yours from? It would be great if you could help

@dukesroc01 A new one is over 150 dollars, or 10 times more expensive then rebuilding it.
@bhmccumber Thanks for the comment!
nice work :)
I need video on how to install the rebuilt starter on 9N please.
@dukesroc01 No, I don't. I just search the web or eBay.
@1944johndeerel Thanks!
@motox458 Thank you!
@01jaycob Thanks!
@jet62095 I'll be watching!
I hate working on things where you gotta remove this, and that first before removing the target part.
@dirtriderkx500 Thanks a lot!
good job.
@Britcheflee Thanks for watching!
At 3:25, you said the armature is scored. You are wrong. That is the commutator that is scored.
its a complete fail for me , never managed to remove the 2 soldered/crimped brushes, broke the coil....
@500passwords Thanks 500!
Failed to show how brushes were removed,and resaloded
Found mine on eBay.
Tractor Supply stinks! They're no better than Southern States any more.
Good luck and the replacement and thanks for watching!
@jdrocks85 Thanks!
