I really needed this video this morning. Your videos always tend to resonate with me. I doubt myself a lot with my music and i feel like its too niche and i'm trying to make it too perfect. I notice that the more i try to acheive this, the more sterile it becomes. You've inspired me to get off the couch and make music, and focus on the primary objective of it being personal expression, a lot. Thank you.
Superb video, Cameron!
Those last 4 in your list ~1:45 esp as a triple threat, I hate myself , I hate my work and I decided to be an expert at photography, mussic, and technical illustration. fuck me.
oh yeah and a healthy dose of undiagnosed ADHD until i was 40
Brother I was about to make a list about this for myself legit....this is why I follow you or one reason anyway we definitely think alike ur list is bang on for me! No coincidences!
The best art advice I found was a tumblr story of this girl in someone's art class doing a very pink and glitter style art piece, which was not the teacher's cup of tea, and the critique the teacher gave her was that he didn't hate it. It was too safe. I'm butchering this, but essentially the teacher went on to say something like "There is no piece of art that will please everybody, so if you don't know who like your work, make sure the haters LOATHE it" or something, it might've been more like "create what makes you happy and don't try to please the people who will never like it by holding back". The girl came in the rest of the semester or year and just had the most avant garde bright pink and peacock-feather pieces since that, and the teacher was both disgusted and proud.
So yeah, if you can't think of someone who will like what you're doing, think of someone who won't like it and make that person hate it, or create for you.
that's definitely a lovely advice.
best artwork is polarising, and the hateful crowd can even help the promotion, lol
What an awesome teacher, though. Few people are so over themselves that they can go: I don't like it, but that doesn't mean that it's bad and that you shouldn't like it. It means that you should lean into it to attract people who have sensibilities similar to yours.
i never knew art teachers existed that actually respected art. i firmly believe that the only “bad” art, is the art that makes you feel nothing, and even then, thats only from your pov.
I saw that post too, it's one of my favourite tumblr posts because the advice is just amazing
Oh my god I never thought of it that way, thanks for sharing, that's so sick
"Great art comes from this internal need to create and NOT a need to be validated. "
Thank you.

“You exist somewhere as a sh***ier version of multiple things, and by being that sh***ier version, you are ultimately you, and the more you express that, the more you become a dot on someone else’s map to be a shi****er version of.” - Venus Theory
I laughed out loud when I hear these rough, but wise words! The sentiment reminds me of the Conan O’Brien quote cited in Austin Kleon’s ‘Steal Like an Artist’: "It is our failure to become our perceived ideal that ultimately defines us and makes us unique.”
I tend to run down rabbit holes instead of making things. That part is what I enjoy creatively.
"Fuck this, Fuck me, and Fuck you" has to be the most punchy, direct, memorable and straightforward advice that I've gotten when it comes to creating. It isn't that I haven't heard these same ideas reiterated in other videos about the creative process, but that your way of explaining it is so condensed, streamlined, and convincing. I can see myself quoting this or harkening back to it in times of doubt. It really is a positive reminder for those of us who tend to overthink
Man. I can’t tell you how much this inspired me. A couple days ago I was sitting on my 12 song album feeling like it was all garbage after working on it over a year. After this video, I finished it in a couple days and feel really happy with it. Thank you.
Now time to publish it!
Let us know when it’s out man so we can delight our senses
Respect for writing a full album and not just an endless stream of 2 track EPs.
@@fixedguitar47Did the same a year ago and it is really a fulfilling adventure! Keep on creating, no matter what!
@@spiritlevelstudiosThose times are quite weird... It seems that the new norm is to only release singles every two weeks... I prefer the old ways; a couple of singles followed by a full fletched album ;)
I needed to hear this, even though, deep down, we all know it lol. For me the biggest challenge has been my contemporaries, the creators I evolved with, spoke with and shared music and creativity with, have mostly all given up, moved on, and seem busy with other stuff, despite my belief in their massive talent. Eventually the dream of being a blip on the indie scene dies, then the dream of getting double digit likes on any one youtube video upload dies, then you reach this point where the years of being told you're talented start to feel almost like a betrayal. That coupled with feeling like a complete hack sometimes, and being in complete flow other times, with ideas that just flow and meld into eachother perfectly, and you'd do anything just to be able to get back into that flow state, listens and listeners be damned. And of course that just makes the flow state even harder to catch, like a butterfly that can teleport.
Honestly I often feel the same.
Yet I think a lot of influential or just great artists/people in general where not well liked or thought of in their time.
Vang Gogh, Nick Drake and such became known only after their death. I think Kafka met some similiar fate and even Mozart died poor as he tried being an independent artist.
I think about the art that has inspired me to make my music back when I started.
One artist in particular NMZS (German Rap)
was a huge catalyst for me, seeking out this passion und really sticking to it.
He got "famous" only after his suicide for example.
The point I'm trying to make is:
Creative People do what they do because they try to connect essences (of things, people, themselves whatever).
Yet I think we'll always feel watched more, than we like and seen less than we'd wish.
And once the art is disconnected from the living artist and has found its' bed in its' respective time it isn't about the artist anymore but about what they made and why they did it.
If you catch my drift.
I think the mistake is seeing music as a way to get fame and recognition. The odds are so stacked against you that 99.9% of people with that ambition wil feel like they've failed.
Just make music that you like. That's what it's all about.
@@robinr22 I totally agree with that, but for me that's not the problem, so much as online feedback is the only interaction I have with my music - I make electronica, chiptunes and breakcore/drum and bass, and have very few friends, and none who are into that sort of thing locally. Round here it's mostly metalheads and goth rockers if it's not r+b/pop/rap. I miss the messageboards and laid back style of the earlier Internet. Sure, there are still music comminuties about, but it all just seems to be about promotion and numbers. Having everything be mediated by a computer, a platform, and in most cases, a self-inserted, self-interested third party (or at the very least a capricious algorythm), is kinda dehumanizing and leaves me feeling disconnected from my roots.
@@SendyTheEndless it's an interesting point. in divide-and-conquer kind of way i think it's way more fulfilling to have 100 fans in tiny community that have 10000 across the globe. and mey even be easier to achieve.
sadly i don't really know how to do that without live performances, it seems like nowadays exist two extremities in music - liveshows, where everything physical, and you can have eye contact with everyone, but the music has no place to be nische since you'll just have too small of a crowd to fill a venue. or pure online, where even nischest of nisches can be filled with 100000's of people even if only 0.001% of general populis would like your stuff, but leaves you feel isolated.
i think most reminiscent of early internet laid-back feel nowadays exists in delibirately tiny comunities. dunno, maybe key is small fandoms of obscure shit, lol.
@@SendyTheEndless that is difficult and I totally appreciate the desire to make connections through music. I'd imagine having someone like and respond to your music is a powerful thing, for sure. But for me, I'm only really making music for it to be something I'm happy with. Occasionally I stick something on TH-cam but really just so I feel like I finished it. I don't care if anyone else likes it and I'm not making it for anyone else. Maybe it's easier to think like that - that, ultimately, it's music for you, made by you and so it's only what you think that counts.
That said, just had a quick listen to your channel - I like what you're doing!
"The people with the least to show often have the most to say" - briliant!
gonna watch this before every studio session
Just want to say, genius thumbnail.
Me and my friend call this the "fuck it, we ball" mentality
This is like the positive version of the grind mindset.
Im trying to bevone more aware of my perfectionism, trying to use it as a tool and not a detonator of anxiety episodes. Mostly because i tend to taint other people's effort with it, and getting angry when they dont see the things as I do, but im getting there.
Life sure is a painful process, but as long as we let our errors teach us, we'll be fine... For the most part.
Great video and great mindset.
This isn't just philosophy for your musical work, it's a philosophy for life.
Wtf are u talking about
Music is life.
LOL
I'm doing my music for myself, thank you for reminding me this.
Reminds me one of the greatest, most encouraging philosophical declarations of all time:
"I'M UGLY AND I'M PROUD!!!"
Thanks, VT.
I took a long, LONG break from music because of self doubt. I decided to apply the "Three F's" philosophy and the result has been amazing. An entire album's worth of unfinished tracks got completed in the last few days. All there is left to do is clean it up and arrange the tracks.
Thank you for helping us. You have a great channel and we appreciate all you do!
- Realms
Thank you so much.
Im sitting here alone in my studio recording vocals. They are my biggest hurdle in my music making. Ive gotten comments like, you should collaborate with a singer. But that has never been of any interest to me. I wanna make music with my voice. So I keep working with my voice. Videos like this keeps my spirit up on this long journey. Im gonna keep coming back to this video to remind my self. Music is everything to me but it is still just music.
Same here. I even paid someone to re-record my vocals and while he was technically a much better singer, the end result just didn't meet my vision for the song. At the end of the day, as ordinary as it is, I prefer my own voice lol.
Pro tip: layer your vocals, it's been a game changer for me. If u align them properly and add effects, u almost can't tell. Also, try using harmonies, as well as background strings that play the same note you're trying to sing 👌
As a teenager The Smashing Pumpkins was my favourite band. It was interesting to hear Billy Corgan in a recent interview say how much of a torture it was for him to record vocals for those albums I considered masterpieces...
best of luck man
People giving advice that doesn't take into account the artist's own goals can be sincere but still suggesting things that will just push you out of the path to what you actually want (and need) to do.
I'm with you here. Vocals are my definite weakness. If I compare my earliest music to current, Yes, I've gotten better and I will be the first to admit when I release a new song with my vox, that yes, I still suck, but it's me and that's the way it is. I think it ruins my songs, but that's OK. My wife and dog will listen to my stuff. Keep going my friend. Art is art. Why be like everyone else. Be unique. That's my mantra.
This is brilliant. My vote is to please keep making Venus Philosophy content ❤❤❤
💯
You’ve perfectly put into words all the thoughts and conclusions I’ve came to about being an artist throughout my career.
My favorite point you made was that we’ve all been so conditioned to impress others, we’ve forgotten the whole point of art: self expression. Lately I’ve been thinking that I don’t care anymore if people like it or not. I just need to publish my stuff so I’m not hanging on to that baggage anymore.
Yeah I feel you. I have so much stuff going on in my head, it just needs to get out, crappy or not. It's like a dam that needs to open
Admiration for your philosophy of life as a creative vessel; appreciation for your effort and work to provide creatives with new learning and a way forward. You’ve gained a loyal follower in me, and not only because you say fuck as many times as you need. I look forward to buying you a coffee and binging on your vids. Oh, and by the way, I downloaded your samples and took them for a little ride. Cheers, Cameron.
From Edmonton, Alberta
this just popped up, im currently studying the art of not goving a fuck, this really helped me out
I love how this channel is becoming more and more focused on realizing musical potential for aspiring artists. It's unique approach to self-help and philosophy for creators has been such a sorely needed niche, and I am glad to see you filling it.
Thanks, man.
Famous people have a drive and a certain something that drives them *BUT!* You live with you, you see all your flaws and weaknesses and *NOT* theirs. You only see their successes.
"Children are a product of their surroundings" - So be in the right room.
Great great video - I'm forwarding it to people, this is so bang on!
I love your channel because its encouraging for us more… pessimistic artists 😂 the ultra optimistic “here’s the morning routine you should do to be more creative!” type videos have always frustrated me lol but THIS is 👏🏼
F*ck yeah
That's the final F, once you deal with the first three in a healthy way
underrated comment
This is beautiful! Venus Philosophy is a public utility service. Keep sharing your thoughts with us.
❤ I wish this video was a public service announcement
THANK YOU
We deeply internalized the fact that our friends didn't support us the way we did them as a flaw in ourselves and you helped us realize we may have just been in the wrong room.
We started about a year ago putting music out there and we just keep doing it for the joy of doing it.
Thank you, Venus Theory. Truly. It seems your name is Cameron? I rarely comment on YT vids, but I wanted to express my gratitude, for your level of emotional intelligence and your ability to articulate how we can all navigate the human experience and our creative pursuits well. You have the posture of a mental beast and this is something we all need to continue to grow and develop in, in a culture drowned out in noise and infatuated with the pursuit of vanity metrics. As my own expectations of my work have been met with crushing blows, leveled to the plane of reality, your videos and work have helped serve as a great heart-check and reminder as to why I'm doing what I simply love to do.
Thank you, Cameron.
One of your best mate. Really needed this as a 58 year old musician and producer. Will watch this quite a few times. If you haven’t you and Mary spender should collaborate with each other. Both of you say such wisdom and inspiration that keeps me going. And if you ever want a cheap tropical holiday my wife and I would love to share our villa / studio with you any time in Koh samui.
61 here, and also keeps me going
Thank you, you made me want to share my music. I wish you happiness, good health and prosperity!
The most inspirational video i have ever watched, thank you so much!
As a visual artist, thank you from the bottom of my heart. It all still applies
Absolutely! I also like the phrase: "Dare to suck" . Failure is the best teacher of practical knowledge.
two years ago after getting my freshly finished album rejected i decided id stop giving a f***. This was the day my sound, style, uniqueness to myself truly blossomed. Ive yet to look back since that day. As an artists that creates for himself now, ive made the best music in my life. ❤
A year or two ago I finally hit this point, and a submithub comment actually triggered it lol he called my song something like a weak/lame copy of other artists. So I started a new project with this mentality, and took my band/account name from that comment to remind me why I started this project
Thank you for all your videos btw, they've helped inspire me more than a few times this year alone
Nearly three years ago, I crafted my album 'Sser' - a period I still cherish. In just two weeks, the three F's from the video coalesced, resulting in 20 amazing tracks. Nothing mattered and the music seemed to create itself. To this day, it remains my most awesome work in my opinion - sincere and uncompromising. And today this video helped me finalize a track I initially was unsure of, pushing me to move forward.
You are not only a good music man, but also a great mentor.
if you want to express yourself, you can't be working to impress other people. Wow, that hit home ❤
Funny, today I just posted on my FB about how I love music production but loath the sharing music part. I've struggled to give less of an F, or care enough to not care too much since starting this music thing.
All so true and great to hear you say it! I'm 65 years old, dabble with FL studio in a very amateurish way and have started to create pretty shitty simple stuff, but know what... I enjoy it so who cares if nobody else does?? Great philosophy lesson - keep it coming!
"You exist somewhere as a shittier version of multiple things, and by being that shittier version, you are ultimately 'you'. And the more you express that, the more you become a dot on someone else's map to be a shitter version of."
Damn.
I recently added a tiny middle finger hand to a dedicated mic stand set facing me every time I play, practice or record. It serves as a stand in audience, a self humbler and a motivator all in one. Makes me laugh and literally minimizes the negativity.
At this point your words are pure inspiration as a performing artist for me. I was lifting weights while listening to this. Thank you
As an architecture student I’ve been embodying this but didn’t realize it was an actual thing
I'm in the marketing/promotion camp and also external validation camp. I'm plagued less with perfectionism because imperfection is beautiful. The creation process is so compelling and always something new to try, so I don't see myself throwing in the towel anytime soon, though the process of releasing something can be bittersweet
Man, I love this. The honesty and authenticity is refreshing. Thanks for being a real human being.
imma grab this, run it through a large hall reverberation plug-in, side chain it to one of the ambient tracks i ve been keeping in my hard drive forever and listen to it on my headphones every night before bed...
I literally talked to my therapist about this today and suddenly this video shows up.
I had no idea how badly I needed to hear this. Thank you so much!
I love how Cameron will sandwich the sponsorship spot in between the f-bomb bits. 😆
5:38 Nothing but true. When I realised this mistake, I started to finish my tracks faster
I really feel the first F. I need to let go of bad ideas or bad motivations faster!
I think people need to hear this, as so many people are stuck on their devices doing art/politics/music/etc instead of doing stuff outward towards their own communities. If that makes sense
picked up the guitar when I was 15. picked up music production when I was 20. I am now 32 and haven't used the skills I have learned over all of these years for anything tangible. but these videos do help build up something within me to maybe step over that bump and actually make an attempt to see if anyone is willing to pay anything at all for any of my music.
Watching this helped me realize that the best practice I got at creating music and anything else was when I did not worry about perceptions of others. While I still have a lot to improve on, not worrying as much and getting more reps in helps so much in creating new concepts significantly boost my productivity and my final product.
I love how you cut through the bullshit and give real advice and meaning to people. Cheers.
Only amateur musician but am a chef and this is a thing i can relate to, i guess any artist who create and expose their art will too. Beautifull video!!
Great video
that was brilliant
This came at a perfect time. I just spent 5 hours in my home studio listening to my "crappy" ideas, and finally thought, at 5 in the morning, I'm fucked, cause I'm stuck!". Almost 6 hours later, I listened to your words, and...Point Taken. Between a decades-long ago conversation with a favorite songwriter,,,Joan Armatrating, and Venus Theory's words, Fuck It. I'm just gonna pick ONE idea, and put it out there, REGARDLESS of appreciation, validation, or "studio sheen". I can roll with the reaction later...! Thank You!!!!
You’re thoughts and videos are so invaluable to me, I can’t really put a price on the kindness and love that’s coming out of this, passion for people, for less suffering of a huge amount of people so that they can learn to not judge themselves and feel like they’re not alone in all the madness of their minds
you are amazing. i was kinda sad and confused and really didnt know where to go with my stuff and now you've made it all much clearer. thanks 🙏
This is it, fuck it, it is what it is.
I love Venus Theory. He's such an articulate young man.
agree. Thanks for this one
I can't begin to tell you how much I needed to hear this. I'm working on an album right now that is going in a different direction from what I anticipated and I almost scrapped the whole thing. Now I'm like screw it. I'm gonna finish it and let it go in the direction it goes in!
The more people do this the more cool art we all get to look at!!!
Thank you so so much ❤
I love that Seneca quote
Thank you for videos like this. I’ve been messing around for a couple years now with nothing to show for it, so giving up is always on the table, especially with all the other life obligations that get in the way.
But, I still have that small spark and desire to continue, I’ve gotten closer to what *I* actually want to make, and that’s something. Small videos like this help put things into perspective, so thank you again!
1:59 is a frame worthy of getting turned into a wall poster for my studio
"As humans we create Art and Art is human...and humans are imperfect therefore true Art is Imperfect " Venus Theory🥂💯
I have been watching you for a while, Cameron and I’m so glad you started making these new more cinematic (if that’s the right word?) videos on important themes for all of us. A lot of respect for your storytelling, editing, color grading and music skill!
Thanks for your great advice, i just finished trance track for record label hoping they like it, let’s say they love it ❤ and feel confident that others will love it too, I know my fans do appreciate my work as music artist & DJ / singer, this video has given me hope
This reminds of Madlib, in an interview with Redbull he pointed out how he just makes music he enjoys. He has no specific listener or audience in mind when he makes beats 5:21
Thats beautifull. Thanks. Im working right now on a music that nobody care but im making it to my father. And this kind of vídeo is for life not only music
I really like what you said around 6:23 . So much truth in less sentences, thank you!
This changed my perspective a lot. When i was younger i created for fun and expression. As i got a bit older, i started to feel like there was no real purpose to my art so i started to share to social media to find purpose. i then became more focused on trying to reach and trying to impress others. thank you for reminding me of the true meaning of art. 🖤
Your videos are keeping me going in terms of doing music, thanks so much for the effort and truth you put into your vids.
I love this. A reminder for artists to be artists and focus on doing what we do best, expressing ourselves
Thanks. I was going through some crap. This helped me out a lot.
Very interesting video also have a look at David Bowie never played of the gallery
I did this kind of thing and it works. I now create more and when I put it out there for others they like it, whereas I think I released it before it was "ready." Thanks for this video!
This video just came up on my recommendations, and god damn was it something I needed to hear. Thank you so much for making this video. ❤
thank you man
Thank you so much! Just had a conversation yesterday about making music without a grid and how difficult it becomes to think out of the box as soon as you're inside. The Day before i talked with a friend and label owner about social media and how you spend 90% of your time creating social media content and 10% making music these days. Love your approach
The most difficult part of my current project is the voices, thanks to this video I will record them inside my truck during Thanks Giving! I will follow these excellent tips! God bless you brother!
This is the best life advice I've seen on YT. I've never LIKED and SUBSCRIBED because I actually wanted to, until this. Fff*cking spot on. GO MORE NOW
Love you Venus Theory.
I appreciate the message in the video and also it was humorous
Your videography and editing is such on point. I need u to guide me as to how u did it, being weak in editing and I'm so jealous onto people who can
Behind that facade of chilled steel forged in the scalding cauldron of hyper-masculinity is a really lovely, empathetic gentleman. Glad I’m subbed.
Thank you for all of your straightforward content. I waste time, lack confidence, yet I’m powering through the struggle and learning as much as possible. I also suffer from gear acquisition syndrome. Getting the equipment is so fun and learning all of it and trying to connect them is tedious. Love your videos! Thank you!!
Thank you ❤ needed to hear this right now
Well I think you've achieved what you set out to with this video man! I can see lots of motivated musician's in the comments and I feel it in myself too. I love the philosophy and the way you've translated it. It really resonates with the exact path I've been on myself that has allowed me to really enjoy producing and releasing music more than ever ("fuck it, I like it, it's not perfect, release the damn thing and do another!").
Thanks so much for the hard work you put into making these videos, they're really something!
Thank you
Definitely needed to hear this. Thank you.
