  • Day 5 of my backpacking trip to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
This is our longest day - 10.9 miles - and is also our last night on the trail.
Fall weather has blown in and the temperatures are much cooler - so much better for hiking! There are plenty of scenic views but there are plenty of signs we're getting closer to civilization.
We have lunch at Au Sable Light Station - the stunning lighthouse - with a backdrop of perfect blue skies.
We stop to check out Log Slide - an old logging site along the trail.
And we finish at Masse Homestead Group site where we enjoy a relaxing evening around a campfire before another storm rolls in.
I'm backpacking with a group of friends, doing the entire trail through the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (known as the U.P.). We start at Munising Falls Visitor Center and spend 6 days hiking the 42-ish miles to Grand Sable Visitor Center.
