Having read all of Laura Ingalls Wilder book's, I would say that there is nothing tragic about him or Laura's life together. They were tough and resilient people of their time! I greatly admire them and the way they made beauty out of the ashes they endured together. It's called life and they faced things together with their faith in God, their commitment to work hard and their love of the family. Laura & Almanzo were true pioneers.

My grandparents went from St. Paul MN to the Dakotas at the turn of the last century. My grandmother sent a letter, written from beneath their cart, saying “I can’t believe I let him talk me into this.” They eventually had 11 children, but it was extremely difficult. I have pictures of my dad when he was 10 but he looks like he’s five. Malnutrition was a real thing even before the Depression.

Laura's biography of Almanzo 'Farmer Boy' is a favorite of mine. I can't help but think that if he had followed through with his lifetime love of horses and intuitive knack for training them.... he could have had a so much better life than trying to battle weather, volatile prices etc. on a farm.

My mom lived her early years just a couple miles from the Big Woods area Laura once lived in. My grandpa had her aunt for a grade school teacher. One of my grandma's friends was an Ingalls cousin who raised sheep. Because I knew that area of WI well, I fell in love with Laura's books as a young girl who lived about 60 miles north of the Little House in the Big Woods.

Laura and Almanzo weren't married until years after the blizzard of 1880-1881. It was their daughter, Rose that encouraged Laura to draft her life story. Rose edited each draft and thus rendered them publishable. Rose was a famous writer then and thus had the professional expertise that Laura did not.

I read all of the “ Little House” books by Laura Ingalls Wilder when I was a child, and loved them. However, Laura did not meet her future husband, Almanzo Wilder, in Minnesota. They first met in the Dakota Territory after the Ingallses and the Wilders had settled there. Was this video based on the T.V. series based on Laura’s books? I didn’t watch the series much as I felt it strayed too far from the books.

    1. The move to Minnesota was not part of the Homestead Act. The move to Dakota was.
    2. He had a younger brother born after the Farmer Boy era. So he was the fifth of six children. (Laura didn't include his oldest sister in the book, as her name was also Laura).

I too read all the series by Laura Ingals Wilder. Watched all the episodes of Little House on the Prairie too . I love that time period. It was hard but simple. As an afterthought, i wouldn't call his life tragic. I would call it successful and fulfilling.

Almanzo was not the youngest Wilder child. The youngest child was a brother named Pearly Day.

There were tragedies, but there was love and a lot of joy too. Their family represented the pioneer spirit of the USA. ✌🏼💖

The tragic life and ending of Almanzo Wilder unfold like a poignant novel. From the challenges he faced on the frontier to the sorrows that marked his later years, the story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Reflecting on his journey evokes a mix of empathy and admiration for a life lived through adversity.

Like many of us, I too have read The Little House Series and loved each of them. I loved your video as much as I loved the beloved books! I really appreciated your attention to detail, especially with the strong connection between Almanzo and Laura. It was beautiful.
There is one thing that I do take exception to. I really do not like the title of this video. Yes, their life was hard. And that is what makes their story so relatable to us, even today; for most of us have had struggles in life. And his death was not tragic. You said this yourself. He lived 92 years. Not only is that not tragic. It is exceptional. Despite the many setbacks, including health problems, he lived well above the average age of his time and of ours as well.
I do agree that there was one tragedy in their life: the death of their son. That truly was sad. But there is one comfort that we can see in this; and I am sure they knew it. Though his life was very short, the comfort they could hold on to was that their son went into the loving arms of Jesus. And he is still there today.
Top Discovery, once again, I thank you for this very touching video. It truly did touch my heart.

You could add he was savy. In a modern way he tried to save himself as a farmer he practiced a government program encouraging tree growing, which was heartbreakingly bankrupt when their house burned. My impression is they weren’t too fond of government programs. A few more actual life pictures instead of the show. The Mansfield home was awesome with it hand built and not the shack from the show. Their courtship had an impressive beginning. She was young and not terribly interested but Manley would come get her in a sleigh and his devotion won her over. Or maybe it was also the fact that he and Cap Garland saved the town from starvation. That winter it was in the negative 40 20:57 ’s and they ran out of hay to stay warm. They risked their lives on the open prairie in the cold and they weren’t even sure that they would find any hay or wheat. They used baked potatoes to put in their pockets to stay warm but by then they didn’t have any. We are so blessed; today it’s 7 whole degrees and I have a plow to get to the barn

Almanzo was not the youngest of 5. He had a younger brother, Perley Day Wilder. Too many inaccuracies in this video to continue watching. Plus, his life was not tragic.

I've been to the Rocky Ridge Farm and toured the inside of the house, and explored the farm. I had asked for permission to metal detect the farm, but had to settle for exploration rights.

I read all the books also, and loved them. Almanzo & Laura met in South Dakota. I couldn’t watch the Little House on the Prairie show, Laura would be sad at how they portrayed her, (a spoiled brat) The books portrayed her as a respectable person. She would not have fought Nellie for Almanzo.

How amazing is history? A woman wrote about her life and to this day we’re obsessed. I’ve watched the series, I think, 5 times in my adult life. I didn’t appreciate it as a child. I got annoyed with it always being about Laura, yes I know, she wrote it 😀. But now as an adult I just love watching it and wishing ppl were like that now. God fearing, wholesome and neighbourly. I can only dream 😴. My favourite character from the show is by far, Harriet Olson and Willie ❤ and Carrie ❤

Laura and Almanzo met and married in the Dakota Territory after that harsh winter. I read all of Laura's books backwards and forwards and knew them by heart. I also remember when I was in the fifth grade, part of The Long Winter was in our reader and remember shivering from the cold Laura so specifically detailed.
