I use the Metro bus and train everyday for work and school, and it’s so scary when people who are clearly intoxicated or mentally ill who come close to me screaming, yelling incoherent words, and try to touch me. Luckily I move away or avoid eye contact so I won’t get attacked. It’s a real problem and it’s increasingly dangerous and saddening that this is occurring more often.

Try riding a train to work because you can’t drive. You have to always dodge Homeless people taking up two or three seats. Some are just sleeping, but others are often yelling and threatening people. Sure, let’s let them stay on the train 24/7 so that the city doesn’t have to do anything…. That will just turn the train into a moving homeless encampment.

Many of these people should be taken into custody through 51-50, but then youd have dozens of phsyciatric hospitals full.
Let me tell you, as someone who has been in one because of false allegations, i looked at all these people with mental problems, some of them talking to themselves or just walking around in circles, I thought, “wow! If homeless people were brought here, theyd have immediate housing, a bed to sleep on, food, medical treatment and help to recovery and other resources”. Except in these facilities, if youre unable to prove the ability to help yourself or dont have a plan, theyll keep you there.
But nope. The govt would rather keep them in the streets and not have to assume responsibility over them.

Yeah imagine riding to work/school/grocery stores, etc. and being shoulder to shoulder with people who are seriously so mentally ill and/or intoxicated folks who are urinating and puking everywhere.
Public transportation is for people to get to where they need to go and aren't here to house those who need more than just a place to crash. It's totally unfair for everyone involved.

It’s an American issue because instead of focusing on the root cause of homelessness like drugs, mental illness, high cost of rent, the government enables the drug user, enables crime, won’t spend money on mental health facilities and affordable living. Instead, our border is wide open so millions of illegal aliens that don’t go through the proper channels are invading our communities and taking up our tax dollars that should go toward fixing the homeless crisis.

If it's anything like in Sacramento with our light rail system, it's essentially an honor system since there are no turnstiles anywhere. You come on from the sidewalk for the most part, then get off at another sidewalk. Then it's up to the company itself to have officers onboard that check everyone for their passes. But there are large gaps in time where there just isn't anyone on to check passes. There are never any arrests or anything either. It's literally just "oh, you don't have a pass? Well then you need to get off at the next stop." and then they just get off the light rail, wait for the next one and get on that.

I came from Northern California. The subway system up there is worse than this. They used to have fare checkers and write tickets, but then progressives came out with their favorite argument that wins every time "what about the minorities". They said minorities can't afford to pay so they stopped checking for tickets and now it is estimated they lose anywhere between $50-$100 million a year in fares. If you stand at one subway entrance, you will see on average 80% of riders jump the gates or force the gates open without paying. There are regularly homicides and rapes on the subway each week, but nothing will be done because they will scream "what about the minorities" and then things will go on as normal. People who live in California and vote for these politicians deserve everything they get and should stop complaining.

@Whiterun Guard you can be homeless and be hygienic about it. Get a tent, clean your space, shower at gyms through the money you get collecting cans and stuff, ask for toothbrushes and tooth paste from those that distribute it for homeless, get food from food banks, respect people, go to your local library and ask for a library card, research things, make money online, buy a laptop, buy a modem aka portable internet, make friends in your field through seminars, get a car. It's not easy nor can anyone just do what I said but to be a douche and destroy stuff and hurt others because of your personal problems is not a good thing when others are being negatively affected by it. Feels bad for the other homeless just trying to not freeze to death at night. It gets really cold at night. It gets so cold, your back gets sharp pain and it's super uncomfortable and the only thing you can do is just take it. So yeah, I was all for homeless going to the train and sleeping there til it was day time then just leave the train and go to a bench and rest or anywhere you can.

There are, but California is to spineless to do this. Surrounding states encourage their poor to travel to California for housing, benefits. I'm in the field working with folks who've told me they've even been given bus / plane tickets and encouraged to apply for housing, GR funds. Literally we have at least 20% of our homeless from out of state. And they aren't working, or contributing, and are waiting for free services to house them, feed them, and sustain them.
I have been speaking on this issue for a while, and I've said it clearly that California needs to canvas which of our homeless are from out of state, and they need to be sent back to their State of Origin, because it's those states who should be responsible in helping their citizens, and not bussing them over to us. This would reduce homelessness on one end.
Then there are California Resident Homeless who have cognitive, developmental disorders who need evaluations so that they can be serviced by the Regional Center. The Regional Center can then work on family finding services to place the developmentally delayed, or house them in adult group home, or adult FHA foster homes.
Then there is the issue of RSO housing units, where several families have improved their financial situations over the past 10+ years, and continue to live in Rent Control units, when the entire family has grown to earn as a family unit far beyond 100K. These families can afford more but won't leave these units because they are paying less than 18% of their household income. They are holding on to units that should go to real low-income families.
There are solutions, but the city, state, counties don't want to change policies that might make them look progressively right wing.

That has been done the problem is the homeless prefer the streets because they get free money and food. It's the mental illness and drugs.

States get so much money from taxpayers. If politicians would quit giving themselves raises all the time and have a limit to what these politicians can earn, like no more than 100,000 a year, and quit squandering the rest they could build or renovate old buildings that can handle the mentally ill. Turn old buildings into psych wards to help them, not abuse them. Give them something to live for. They are angry with the world. They don't care if they live or die. But there are homeless that aren't addicts. Whole families thrown out of their homes with no where to go. Banks should not be able to foreclose on your home for a few months of missed payments. Add it to the back of the loan til they can overcome whatever happened. After 2 yrs then see what's wrong. Then foreclose..if they can't be helped.

Nowadays street homeless and are fentanyl addicts, and not capable of doing anything no matter how simple it is. Street encampments are open air drugs markets brewing all sorts of crime. Majority of them will die from fentanyl overdose, or drugs related violence. Second hand fentanyl smoke can easily kill you in no time. Street homeless gradually destroy everything around themselves. We will never reduce street homelessness without reducing the amount of fentanyl drug available on our streets. If they can afford, they smoke fentanyl up to 100 times a day. That's how all these fires are started. Homeless advocates are mentally stuck in Pathological Altruism, and all they do is enabling fentanyl addicts remain as close as possible to their fentanyl supplier

ATTN: EVERYBODY EVERYWHERE Here's the answer. Build a huge lot out in the woods away from the cities. Have police enforcement, healthcare & job resources available for them. Make it free, free food & cots to sleep. Showers available too. Absolutely free to go but strict guidelines, if they don't want to stay they have to live in the woods. Problem solved.

I agree. They should have a bootcamp way out in the boondocks of Alabama. All of the services you mentioned should be provided.
      Three options:
      1. Housing with services to get back on track.
      2. Hardcore Bootcamp with Drill Sergeants for LIFE with those services for those who refuse assistance.
      3. Federal prison indefinitely for those who want to act out.

Homeless ppl didn't become homeless by themselves. Family isn't family anymore. Lots of ppl with mental/drug abuse issues or just very stubborn or don't want to ruled by anything or anyone. There are options to come out of their situations but not enough. You can't help someone that doesn't want to be helped. And blaming a bus system for "dumping" the undesirables into a neighborhood is ludacris. At the end of each bus and train shift they must be swept of passengers. Regardless of what end it's on. Yes it's unfortunate safety is being compromised but there's far more buses and trains in the system than what officers can patrol.

Well this is what happens when you defund the police. A good wack on the knee with a baton will correct the misbehavior, but ohhh noo, activists cant stand to see someone get disciplined. There is no reason for the homeless man to break that window other than he wants to get locked up. This is getting ridiculous and out of hand. Love and compassion is not going to resolve this issue.

If they don’t want the help, they will never get clean - it is their comfort zone, a safe feeling, where they feel good about themselves for that moment in time. I’m a recovering meth addict (4 years clean), I know that the need to get clean is way weaker than the desire to get high. It is one of the toughest tasks to finish successfully, overcoming addiction. Prison and forced rehabilitation may be a key component of fixing an issue that has plagued California and other states that have struggled with progressive thinking.

My opinion they gotta sleep outside let the hard working ppl sit on the metro.. it's ridiculous.
