    I have a String of Hearts for about 40 years. It's the very same plant and it had , along all these years, periods of glory and periods of not so much glory. It has been all it´s life in a glassed china clay pot with no drain. A "few drops" of standard tap water once in a while, it´s enough. Never had leafs droping or geting brown. During all this time I changed soil 2-3 times. No more. I live in Portugal.

    My Monstera Adansonii is my crowning pride and joy, I had no idea people had issues with them. Mine is in my bathroom so it gets plenty of humidity and there's only one window which casts indirect bright light, year-round new growth constantly, and pretty much no browning. I don't even let it grow up anything as I hate moss poles and just never bothered getting it a trellis. Instead it's grown incredibly bushy and full as any 'legs' or 'bends' in its stems I simply tuck it back into the curve of the pot. In fact, one such long stem is slightly resting on it's direct neighbor Calathea Rufibarba, the absolute only calathea I can keep alive purely bc of the bathroom conditions I think lol

    The tradescantia doesn’t like to be moist between waterings. Let it completely dry out then let it stay dry for a few more days before watering. Then water it only ONCE thoroughly and let it dry out again. I have several types of this plant and I live in Canada - so moderate climate - and this plant likes to be dry most of the time and then a little wet a little of the time. Kind of like a succulent. 👍😀

      And they want light, for me artificial light in winter, especially the coloured ones. And then I still have the problem that, because of the dense foliage, it's always difficult to know when or, better said, since when the substrate is dry, or not.

    • @EduVillena
      @EduVillena ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For indoor succulents, I think the growth of the plant is what tells us when to stop watering. That is to say, they almost always etiolate, so let them take on a little color (the new shoots are almost white) before the next watering. Even if we only water when the soil is dry, the plant could overgrow and look spindly and pale (and weak). They need the same amount of light that they would have outdoors, but that amount can be given indoors over a longer period of time.

    • @maggiedk
      @maggiedk ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chiquita683 it may be that you're consistently waiting too long to water, so the new leaves don't get enough water to form. Though they can handle it sometimes, it's much better for their health to not get to the point of drooping before they get water :)

    we have three peace lillies in the house- only one blooms, but all i care about is the leaves. I love their darker green colour and how they can go from really small leaves to such big ones. I've also never had problems with brown tips (which I occasionally have with most other plants), and when you forget to water them, they'll let you know, and after watering they'll straighten up like you've done them no wrong.

      im always surprised by how much the price of these plants differs across the world. i live in europe, and i bought my rooted, juvenile (already in soil, but no fenestrations yet) monstera albo for 20€, and entirely mature, big and beautifully fenestrated thai cons go for 99€ at my local garden center.
      that said, i would never buy an albo cutting for more than 15€ given how much a risk they are - aside from unrooted ones potentially never rooting, if there's not enough of a stem yet to properly investigate beforehand you could risk getting one that ends up growing entirely white leaves and killing itself that way, or it might eventually just revert to all green and then you have a normal monstera you spent 100$ on... id be soooo frustrated haha

    • @violetgrace7967
      @violetgrace7967 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From my understanding a variegated monstera is really rare and is dependent on a mutation that is why they are very expensive, if you’re not a plant enthusiast then it wouldn’t make sense to buy one because you wouldn’t appreciate all that it is. If you’re just wanting a few house plants then yeah get a normal monstera, but there is a reason for the variegated price.

    I’ve loved my peace lily more than I anticipated. It was given to me as a housewarming gift (I don’t think I would have ever voluntarily picked one up). I love how dramatic it is. It puts on such a show when it gets thirsty, and then perks back up in less than an hour after getting what it wants. And frankly…it seemed to thrive on that sort of treatment. Since I put it in a self watering container it’s fine, but it has never looked as robust as right after it threw a fit and got what it wanted out of it. I desperately want a specimen of its larger cousin…but I don’t think I have room for both it and my monstera. #plantproblens

I'm also getting new leaves every couple of weeks (I had a grow light to supplement over winter). It looks really lush now!

I'm pretty sure our humidity is just too low here, and I'm not willing to baby it by constant misting or adding a humidifier (black mold here LOVES when people use those). I even tried growing it out of the back of an aquarium, which I've found works great with plants that require high humidity. It survived, sort of, for months, then finally died. It's one I've definitely given up on.

    I don't have a nanouk, but I've found with tradescantias (and other plants that are easy to propagate) that if the original plant isn't doing well, chopping and propping will give me a much healthier plant! Then I can keep the watering consistent from the beginning to avoid browning, plus the new baby plant is already used to the environment of my home so it turns out a lot more hardy and happy than the mother plant (which is probably in shock because it's no longer in a greenhouse).

    I bought a peace lily, the same brand you showed in the video, in January and she's still alive and thriving. Her name is Catherine. I was shocked to see that she has continued to bloom! Even as I write this there are two new flowers that are starting to push out. I'm so delighted because I never expected her to bloom after I took her home from the nursery because everyone said it wouldn't happen. I have her on the windowsill of a north facing window which gets a lot of indirect light, and right beneath her is a radiator. I was sure these conditions would kill the plant because of the heat coming from the radiator, but nope. She's growing so beautifully and all the leaves are healthy except for some having brown tips. I don't give her anything except water. She drinks A LOT. I have to give her a drink every 3 - 4 days, otherwise she starts to pout. She's so dramatic, I'm pretty darn sure she's a bratty teenager. :)

    The monstera adansonii making the list surprised me, but your reasoning makes sense - unless you want them to cascade from the top of a cupboard (I have one doing quite well), they are straggly indirect-light hogs. I put two outside in hopes of improving their condition - one is filling out but the other has stubbornly stopped growing. A cutting is growing well in my aquarium, so I'm thinking that might be the best thing for everyone, really.

Some also seem to need a good amount of top down light and need to be turned 1/4 once a week. I hate Watermelon peperomias and Pileas most peperomias in general. They give them the perfect light, humidity and fertilizers that make their leaves look big and full when you buy them and then they start curling, turning brown and falling off if they don't get the exact same conditions they were used to in the green house. I mostly buy plants that I know can make it through a Canadian winter with a little help from growlights. I stick to succulents like snake plants and jades and string of pearls are a struggle until you give them top down light and get on a good watering schedule, once you get in them in the right spot they get very easy to take care of. I just got a ponytail palm which I'm obsessed with and they are very easy. I love all pothos, I have about 6 verieties and the easier philodendrons (philodendron Brazil is probably my favourite, just try to kill it, it is impossible). I also love the easier Hoyas like hoya carnosa even though they grow on the slower side, I love their perfect waxy thick leaves that never turn brown. This turned into a plants I love list lol.

      Thanks Chelsea. Agree with all of that. The Brazil is definitely hard to kill 😂

    I am florist, so maybe it is not relevant but I have string of Harry for more than 10 year and propagated every year, I barely watered mine every 2 weeks in uk and no direct sun and they very happy.

    I bought my adansonii to learn how to grow plants on moss pole. Its cheap and fast growing, small mistake won't kill this plant and i already increased size of the leaves :)

      That's very true. Also easy to propagate if things get really bad

    My first 'fancy' plant which got me hooked on plants was a monstera albo. Still my favourite and thriving 💕 grown it from a tiny 3 leaf baby to 13 leaves of which the last two has the gorgeous holes in them.
    One of my other favourites are a pease lilly diamond, sooooooo amazingly pretty and so far not given me any trouble.
    Personally, I hate alocasias because they are major divas and calatheas because its just too dry where I live so they get nasty brown 🍂

      That's some great growing there! To keep an Albo from going brown 😮

    I love maidenhair ferns-go weak in the knees at the sight of them. Once in a great while I will buy a big, thickly-fronded one just to enjoy it until it inevitably dies away.

    This is why I stick to low maintenance plants I have and love Golden Pothos. Thank you going to check out more of your vids

    I do love the look of a monstera albo but also can’t justify spending all that money on a cutting or plant that will immediately get brown spots. I have 84 live houseplants (on last count) and two fake plants. Those being a fake string of pearls and a fake monstera albo, it has satisfied my desire to have them in my home, without going through all the costs and heartache of killing lots (or lots more) of them. They’re also on this perfect ledge in my house (handily in my zoom background) which is directly over a radiator, thus unsuitable for any living plant, win win!

      A good way to keep a happy Albo for sure 😁

    I've got three 'strings of' - heart, variegated heart, and bananas. They do well in my conservatory but think they would go really stringy with less light.
    Also definitely water them only when the leaves start to feel less plump, by dunking the plastic pot in water for a few hours.
    As for tangling, well, I also crochet, so if you are used to patiently unravelling and un-knotting balls of yarn, then no problem ;)
