  • Welcome! In this video, I'll be giving you a tour of my minimalistic dorm room at MIT, Manipal.
Please keep in mind that this might not be the most accurate representation of living situation on campus because I pretty much live in the best room and the other configurations may be different.
I live in a single AC room with an attached washroom in Block 13 which is not allotted to freshers. It's the only girls block which is completely reserved for seniors. Each room has a bed, a desk, a chair, a cupboard, a side table and some storage shelves for each person. Mine is a single converted double room converted back to a single room hence it has a lot more storage. I just walk you through all my belongings and how you could decorate and use this room yourself.

    Hi Saranya,
Iam Murali, Father of an aspirant daughter in MIT Manipal CSE. My question to you is, since we are a middle class but somehow can manage her studies in MIT with education loan, will there be any inferiority complex issue developing in my daugher with lot of affluent and wealthy students as I heard are studying in MIT. Btw, how many students of middle class are in MIT? I mean rough ratio of wealthy and middle class students if you can guess ? Please reply.

      Hii
It's a really valid question. I think it's important to prepare your daughter to keep in mind several things.
First, there's always going to be someone who spends more than her and someone who spends less than her. If she's always going to compare her expenses with other people, she'll never be satisfied. I know both, people who spend upwards of 30k a month and I know people who spend less than 2k a month. The important thing is, she should be utilising her money in her own way and not get influenced by someone else. Separating needs from wants is crucial. Being in college is going to be a good way to transition to a small way of adulthood where she'll be managing her own expenses.
Second, there's no substitute for hardwork. Being more affluent doesn't automatically mean being successful. You'll still have to work hard for grades and internships and placements and other lucrative opportunities. You can't buy your way into those. That is a great equalizer.
Third, we're all broke college students trying to get through till the end of the month. We all get a monthly allowance from our parents too. Half of our outings with friends get cancelled because of the reason "paise nahi hai" hahaha. Not everyone is extremely affluent. Since it's an enormous university, you'll find people that you vibe with better than others. Might take a bit of time sometimes but it will happen. Keep your head down, work hard, socialize as much as possible and she'll be just fine. Takes time to adjust, first year might be difficult trying to navigate through a new environment but it's a part of life and makes for an amazing experience later.
      All the best to her!

Wow. Thanks a ton for your motivating words and such a detailed reply. You understood my real concern as a parent. Because after spending all that huge money for a seat and hostel stay in such a prestigious institute she should not feel disappointed and repent joining out of complex issues. I will definitely follow your advice and try to make up her mind before she takes a call. Thank you very much once again. You are guiding aspiring parents and students with good inputs. 👏👏👏

      Congratulations!
Yes you need to maintain a CGPA above a certain criteria. I'm not sure but it is always around 8 or 8.5, you should ask the administration and everyone else involved.
      Thank you so much! :)
