Dear Gods.... what a blast from the past. I grew up in Peckham in the 60's/ 70's and I remember going into that Sainsburys when they still served you at the counter, counters which ran up and down the sides of the shop. Next to C&A was a Woolies, and Christmas wasn't complete without a visit to Santa's grotto in Jones and Higgins' basement! There was also Pelican House which was a school for the blind. Just down from there was a shop where we used to buy bags of broken biscuits, opposite Oliver Goldsmith where I went to school. I lived in Dalwood Street, opposite the pub and Udens Undertakers :D Spent many happy hours in Peckham Rye park too, and I think I spotted a shot of the rose gardens in the video :)

I was brought up highshore Road, opposite rye Lane Chapel. And do u remember that sainsburys as there used to be a counter that went right round it and u had to ask the lady's behind the till for ur goods... 70s ,80s,90s... and went to bellenden school..... Good days...

So cool!!!!! Finally did Peckham. I grew up in Peckham and its so good to hear a little more history than I already knew. I went to Jones & Higgins on a regular basis especially at Christmas to see Santa. A little story I was told, not sure how accurate but.... When Jones & Higgins closed down the shop sat empty for many years because it was a listed building and restricted any modernisation. Then someone discovered it was only the Clock that was listed, so they knocked the building down and built a new shopping centre. In the 1970's the odeon was a few doors along from Wilson's bike shop. Saturday morning pictures were followed up by staring in Wilson's window at the bikes. But you didn't mention the Peckham lido. Open air pool opposite where the totem pole is. There was a blue fountain/cascade at the end and is the only thing that survived. The pool was filled in and the buildings removed, but the blue fountain is still there.

I lived on Bellenden road in 1999. Away from Bellenden village as they call it now, past the school where you read the plaques, on the right was Desmond’s barbers 💈 where the 80’s soap was based, though I’m sure most of it was filmed in a studio. My sister met her husband at car maintenance class in the school whilst working on her Austin Maxi. The superintendent on the Original cast of the tv show The Bill lives on Choumert Grove.

Another great Vlog👍! A trip to London would be worth it just to take a tour with you, see the sites, learn some history, learn some facts, and hear some things that may not be facts but should be! lol! A tour with Joolz is definitely a bucket 🪣 list item!

Love your visits south of the river, partly because I was brought up in Forest Hill and got a grant from the LCC to go to Alleyn’s in East Dulwich.
I notice a few snarky remarks from people complaining about graffiti as if it’s a bad thing, when actually it’s part of the life and vitality of the area. They don’t know how lucky they are to live in London. Peckham looks absolutely bloody lovely to me now, from the other side of the world in New Zealand. If I ever win the Lotto I’ll be back in Sarf London like a shot.

Hi Joolz, I love the way you find beauty and historical gems hidden in what appear to be rather neglected area’s. Certainly most of the gems that you highlight have not been harnessed, packaged, or presented as such, as they certainly would be if they were on the tourist map. Could you do a similar video featuring Clapham Junction?

Really well done loved to see all those local independent businesses. But I can't believe you walked past The White Horse Pub, with narrow a word. The Forge was fantastic 👏🏾

Joolz's videos remain the most entertaining way to get to know London. The humour alone is worth the watch, but we also get a bonus of indepth info. And he seems like quite a lovely guy to have a pint with too. Will definately look him up when I get to London later this year.

I've lived in London for almost 10 years now and still never got myself down to Peckham. But this is possibly my favourite video of yours, so I'll have to make a journey down there some time soon! Wonderful production once again. Best wishes to you, Simon, Lou and everyone else in the Joolz Guides cinematic universe.

Thank you Jools, I really enjoyed this. I was brought up in West London (Hammersmith) and only really knew that part of London other than the Central. I went to work in Peckham when I was about 18 in 1980/81 and it was very different back then, with many problems but a close community. I remember that Sainsbury's, it was beautiful, but I didn't appreciate things like that then. I certainly didn't notice all that fantastic Art Deco architecture which I love now! What a lovely surprise to see it now!
