  • Writer Jura Koncius has been working at the Washington Post for four decades, but even she didn’t predict the mayhem that would follow her viral Marie Kondo interview. The iconic organizing expert sent shockwaves through the internet with her confession that she’s not keeping her home so tidy after three kids. Jura takes us behind the scenes of the interview. Plus, experts Kay Patterson and Judi Igwe weigh in.

People are acting as if she were a fraud. She isn't. What she did was help people with the clutter in their lives. She is now the mother of 3 young children. I doubt she lives like a slob. But her focus has changed (as it should) when life's responsibilities have shifted.

The Konmari method helps me manage my anxiety and depressive episodes. If she changed her mind as a mother of 3 young children it doesn't mean that she is a fraud. She developed her method at another stage of her life. People FELT offended, doesn't mean she intended to offend people. When her kids are grown she might return to managing her house with the help of the Konmari method, while the ones rejoicing over her statement may never reach their goal of an uncluttered and peaceful home

This whole interview sounds like their shaming a mom for spending time with her kids and not having a perfectly clean house. Shes still living a joy filled life which is exactly what she talks about.

Marie Kondo may have started the trend - but Kay Patterson spilled the key to making organizing work. Things get messy and you simply organize them again - as often as necessary. Doesn’t mean you have to revisit every item you own. Some things will never spark joy, but you absolutely need them.

The point is alot of parents felt shame trying to get to her standards. I too fell for it but when I saw her line I was like it's just a marketing tactic. Instead of donating all my stuff I'm selling it & have made over 30k now. Granted I bought alot second hand so I'm making a profit on almost everything. Meanwhile friend trying to do same taking a lost but still $$ is $$.

Marie Kondo's message is "sparking joy". What ever that is and not to be so attached to our stuff. Relationships with our stuff change as our priorities and phases of life change. I don't feel betrayed by her at all! What's wrong with choosing to make your children and family a priority? I still feel decluttering and organizing to be important for me and not have my stuff get in the way of the other relationships in my life that I want to achieve and enjoy.

Queen of clean now knows that when kids are "creating a rock collection" in the house you can happily kiss tidiness goodbye

While priorities change, there are still days when my home is tidy af and times when it's not. I have kids, but I can't live with clutter EVERY DAY. I doubt Marie Kondo's home is never in a state that others would consider perfectly tidy.

  • @deannab9511

Maybe what Marie Kondo thinks is messy is not what most people consider messy, her home is probably still pretty neat compared to most.
