Played this way back when on a machine that was pretty much the minimum specs, maybe the CPU was better, but it was definitely some 486 with 8MB RAM. It worked fine on the low resolution, even if a little jerky on scrolling. I distinctly remember I actually checked a higher resolution (no idea why it would be different than here), and it looked amazing but was unplayable. Was so excited for the split-screen mode, I even managed to persuade the parents to buy a second mouse, unfortunately ended up playing extremely little in that mode.
I remember playing around doing a similar experiment. Even my dx4 overdrive 100mhz and 32mb ram struggled with it and I would not enjoy to play it on there.
Strange minimum specs. Especially for a game released in 1996. But "playable" had a different meaning back then. I personally don't know anyone who still gamed on a DX2-66 in 1996 though. The games were getting just too demanding in this year, even for my 5x86@160 (Quake, Tomb Raider...). Those were the years where we upgraded our CPUs almost every year to be able to play the latest games at all. Today you can play modern games decently with a 10 year old CPU.
From what I remember when you run out of planks you get an emergency resource pack that gave you just enough to build a sawmill and and a woodcutter.
You do, and if you're not paying attention you build forts with it😁

Maybe memory? Cool to hear from someone who actually did the split screen thing😁

Wonder why, when early 3d games do fine on a similar system

Agreed. I think even the max spec is wierd for 96, I was always behind the curve but was rocking a p133 when this came out.
