Good work, Danny! When I see a street scene where side characters doing their things, not just standing still like mannequins, I feel the effort that was put into animation. Also, the style is so adorable!

Given that this was animated by Bernadette's sibling, Danny, who MADE the piggy portraits, I'm kinda unsurprised they made an appearance lol.. Danny does have their own channel - Danny Banner - if you want to see more of their work! They're super cool too.

I'd be so happy if the current blue/pink dichotomy didn't last more than 100 years. Outside of the issue of needlessly gendering everything, it's just plain BORING.

I hate pink. I went out of my way to not buy anything pink for may daughter when she was a baby. She wore all the colours except pink.

I bought this cute light teal onesie when my son was only 5 months (it was Easter themed). He was so cute that an older lady at church asked what her name was ...I had to say "oh HIS name is...." It didn't help that he has beautiful long eyelashes too. 😅. Teal is a neutral color so I was so confused and it doesn't help how the girls section gets all the colors and the boys are just meh.

I remember having my babies (26 years ago) and not wanting to share their names or their chromosomes specifically because I HATED pink. Just pink. And the grandparents were all: "BUT HOW WILL WE KNOW WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES TO BUY!?" "Natural fibres, please. Not transparent. Green and yellow are nice colours. Oh, and no Disney or sportsing sportsies." I also bought a round crib because I have always been a li'l sh*t who never made anything easy for anyone. None of that stopped me from misgendering toddlers on Hallowe'en when their parents dressed them up in pink leopard onesies or lion manes. The binary is such a hard habit to break.

In the Netherlands we still have the tradition of putting up a sign, usually in the front yard if there is one, to announce the birth of a baby. It's a bit more elaborate nowadays though ^^

Some places in the US do that as well. It’s normally a signs that’s says “it’s a ____!” The signs kinda look like the political ones people stick in their yard lol I had a friend do that and it had the OPPOSITE effects as “stay away I’m tired” that was in the animation. Random people who she didn’t know (mostly older women) kept coming to her door to congratulate her and give her unsolicited advice.

Some sources say this was settled by the 30s and some say not until the late 40s or early 50s. Disney's Peter Pan came out in 1953 and had Wendy in a blue gown and Michael in a pink sleeper. So I tend to think it wasn't fully settled until later.

Interesting - when I researched the topic for a totally different (scientific) reason some years ago, I found another aspect which might be more relevant to the German/European part of the world but is a fun story, too:
Allegedly Emperor Wilhelm II (late 19th century) tried to boost the economy by supporting the growing of woad, which was the common plant for dying dark blue. He clothed the whole German marine this way (which was the blue marine uniform with the white square collar), which became in a "small" version fashionable to clothe young boys in. As not to put girls and boys in the same colour, girls were put in pink, a colour at that time (by richer people, obviously) more used for boys. It can also be seen in various old paintings of aristocratic boys, as it was the "small red", which was for a long time the most expensive colour, reserved for men and therefore used in Christian paintings for the coat of Jesus, while blue (as mentioned here) - was connected to Virgin Mary and thus in its "small" form often used for girls. But of course - FASHION.
I've read other explanations as well, but I liked this story. (I think it was from: Heller, Eva "Wie Farben wirken", 1999)
Edit: Oh, and - SO CUTE, the cartoon!

As the only knitting great aunt in the family, I am working on two blankets for impending births. One gender has been revealed, and the parents requested pink. The other is unknown to me, but the parents stated preference is "pastels". The famous knitting guru Elizabeth Zimmerman posited that silvery grays and deep navy were beautiful colors for baby wear (50 years ago!), and I agree. But guess we're not quite ready for that change in the mass population. 🙄👶

The funny thing is, even as gendered colours for children expand beyond pinks and blues, it seems to be nowadays that bolder colours tend to be for older boys, while pastels and softer colours tend to be for girls or infants, and gender rules seem to be more strictly enforced for boys, in that while it may be considered completely within norms for a little girl to wear light blue or pastel green clothing, it is far rarer for a lttle boy to wear pink or dark purple clothing, and girls tend to wear both skirts and trousers, but outside of certain cases of cultural dress, you almost never see boys wearing skirts or dresses.

It should’ve been more obvious given how much I watch your channel that hand-sewing played a huge part in this, but I had never thought about it before; this was really interesting! Also, Dani did a fantastic job on all the animations! (I’m guessing she found some new software and wanted to play with it, ha ha!)

Oh gosh, this format was so fun! Very charming animation, and as much as I adore long videos filled with humor and knowledge it was very nice to be able to just watch this video as soon as I saw the thumbnail without accidentally forcing an overhaul of my schedule for the evening. Absolutely delightful! Very storybook and whimsical and, of course, very Bernadette!
