For this design exercise, I’ve created a simple flat illustration of Homer Simpson and using the Knife tool sliced the vector shapes to shade the character.
If you want to follow along with this tutorial you can download the vector illustration here:
    www.cosminserba...
Given that this is a flat design illustration you shouldn’t aim for something photorealistic, just try to show what kind of volume you’re working with, whether that’s something rounded or angular.
One important thing to note when you are working with the Knife tool is that if you’re following a curved path, you should go slowly.
If you speed things up, you will get very weird curves on the slice, which means you’ll need to either try again or make an additional adjustments, ending up with you wasting time.
When you’re shading white elements, I usually recommend sticking with monochrome shades of grey, but if you are working with color, then you have way more room to experiment with which kind of darker shade you’re going to use, you can even have different colors.
Hope you enjoyed this quick Illustrator tutorial and start incorporating the knife tool in your work, don’t forget to like this video so more people could see it and subscribe to get notified about upcoming tutorials.

I greatly appreciate how this video demonstrated exactly what I was looking for, and it did it in under 2 minutes. Quickly getting to the point is vastly underrated. Not every tutorial video needs to preface the lesson with all of the controls, the setup, the color pallete etc.
This should be an example for how to make a very valuable tutorial video.

Whenever I draw the cut with the knife, it drops a stroke onto my shape even if I have none selected. Then when I remove the stroke, it removes the stroke across my whole shape. What am I doing wrong?

Really good tutorial! I am a bit confused as to how you get your cuts so well rounded. Is it just practice, or is there some type of button that you can press to make it a cleaner curve?

I created my image with the pen tool. When I select them, it only grabs one stroke. How do I make my image one before using the knife tool?

not sure if it’s relevant but highlight two shapes then select “shape builder” tool. Hover over an area where the two shapes intersect, press ‘option’ (Mac) and click to delete that area.
Or experiment with similar things under shape builder tool

the whole picture is turning into the color instead of shading in those corners how you're doing it. Maybe you should do a video on preventing the whole illustration from turning into a solid color because i see what you're doing but thats not working on my end you need a step-by-step tutorial. Are there any button commands that make the knife slice shade the corner you just sliced? because my whole picture turns into the color
