    The path divide method was exactly the technique I've been looking around for. I definitely prefer that one over the knife method. Amazing video!

      It is a really nice tool once you know it exists. I do recommend using it with a Tablet. Troubleshooting: It likes to bounce if you are too zoomed in or if you have your snaps turned on. Fix: Zoom out a little and draw slower to allow smoothing to work.

      If it comes to your channel I've seen just a few but I'm already very impressed. I was trying to follow other channels in the past but I find your way of teaching most appropriate. At least for me. Everything is well explained and easy to follow. Please keep those videos coming because you're doing a great work. Thanks again. Just a question. Is it possible for you to do Affinity Designer tutorials similar to those?

    Really love these tutorials! Started this one today and I'm almost finished. Although I'm having trouble knowing which colors to use for the shadows/highlights because the colors in my Coyote swatch doesn't appear to be the same on my screen.

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The file is the exact one I used. Check to see if you are in RGB/CMYK. That could affect how they appear. The colors/shadows have a gradient layer over it that we build on a different video which will mute the shadow layer. (Keep in mind you can always modify the color swatches. )

For example, this video has several layers that are no longer mentioned in the previous videos...they're just there. I'm struggling to follow along without the rest of the content.

      The color palettes are in the Tutorial Resource Folder. The Tutorial Resource Folder is in with the Brushes Curriculum. You just have to scroll down past the Brushes 101 and How to Apply Brushes Section.

    I've seen multiple videos and still don't understand how this works... when I unite my lines I can't color in the seperate parts anymore, but when I don't unite it I can't remove the black lines and leave the color and not use the cut tool then... :/

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let's troubleshoot: (Many of these steps are on the 2nd video)
      2nd video:
      Completed adding on variation?
      Expanded Appearance & Expanded your lines with brushes?
      Completed the clean up of overlapped lines?
      United the black?
      Gone into Live Paint and Filled in the black areas (in the video I fill in gray but the color swatches will work)
      If the Live Paint doesn't recognize shapes to color that means there are gaps in the inked layer. You can adjust the lines so they touch or you can go under object- live paint-option to view/or fill in gaps.
      Video 3:
      Expanded the live paint? Ungrouped the Live paint so you can select individual parts?
      Used knife to cut through shapes so make highlight shadows.
      deselect and re-select to color value shapes?

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      These tutorials are all just ways of practicing the tools in a fun manner. None of these are the end all be all for a particular step. Many will be modified for ease of use for beginners by to use to avoid too much shape builder or pathfinder.

    I get visible seams when using this technique. Any idea why?

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have a flat color layer underneath?

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are cutting on the flat color layer and creating values you will get a seem. 1 Layer for Color. 1 Duplicated Layer above for Cutting Values.

    After using the knife tool to change the color of the section cut, it changes the whole drawing into that color, even the strokes. Why?

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure you have:
      1. Expanded your Live Paint (if everything is changing to a silhouette)
      2. Ungroup your Live Paint Bucket shapes (all shapes will color)
      3. Deselect after you cut the shape to select the individual shadow shape (this is if the whole shape colors not just the shadow cut out shape)

  • @jeffkimberlin6232
    @jeffkimberlin6232 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there a way to adjust the knife cuts if you need to maneuver them around. Or will you need to just keep repeating the step until you get the desired effect.

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say get it close and then you can modify the anchors/handles with the direct selection tool. The result is just a simple shape- so you can edit once you ungroup and color. Troubleshooting: once you are done with the cut shapes for highlights & shadows you can delete the flat color that is left over on the value layer ( you should still have a clean flat color layer) makes it easier to select and modify the value shapes

    • @jeffkimberlin6232
      @jeffkimberlin6232 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried that. It seemed to create another cut. However, it just dawned on me that i can combine those shapes. Thank you for the clarity. Great tutorials by the way! Love your style!

    • @JasonSecrest
      @JasonSecrest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shouldn't be adding a new cut- double check once you have made the cut that you switch over to your direct selection tool before making edits or changing color. (Select Shape. Cut with knife. Direct Selection Tool - Click on Artboard to deselect - click on shape to color.)
      I'll give you an alternative for smooth lines that I think you will like:
      * So you can use pen/curvature tool/ pencil or even the segment tool along with the anchor tool to draw out a new line where the shadow line would go. Pretty much any drawing tool that you like that will drop down a smoother line than the knife. (Same rules apply - go a little long all the way through the shape.) You are Going to select color shape and new stroke. Pathfinder - Divide. You will need to UNGROUP before you edit.
      Pay attention to the base color shape- do all of your shadows/highlights before you edit. If it looks like the edges are being covered up the the shadow shape is below the face shape. We use that base color shape for all the shadows and highlights so if you delete it early you won't have a shape to cut for your other values.

    • @JasonSecrest

      Double check you don't have a stroke on your fill layer. Also double check that you don't have things grouped or potentially you are still in Live Paint Bucket. (Expand + Ungroup)

      Here is the next video: th-cam.com/video/5rkcGlEFlME/w-d-xo.html at minute 6:00
      It is an offset path on a background color layer once we have added all the flat color and inking variation. So duplicate layers of flat color & expanded inking. (make sure you duplicate the layers before moving to the next step - (select all - unite in pathfinder) Should be a big silhouette of the coyote. Move layer below other layers. Add offset path or stroke on the outside to the new shape.
