HUGE Port of Albany Fire: 1980

On Sep. 7, 1980, huge explosions rocked the Port of Albany. Neighborhoods a mile away were evacuated, highways were closed, and hospitals were on standby as a chain reaction was feared.

In the newsroom that day, a Sunday, we fielded calls from many angry football fans. Claudia's live report aired during a commercial break of the game and encroached onto a few moments of live football. The potential destruction of neighborhoods in Albany's south end did not meet their threshold for warning.
