Renault Captur 2020 - Bestseller 2.0? (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Renault Captur is a b-crossover segment bestseller. The first generation of the French lifted supermini has left the competition far behind. The new Renault Captur has some big shoes to fill. Speaking of big, the 2020 Renault Captur is larger, so as to better compete with other recently launched B-crossovers, like the Skoda Kamiq, which I reviewed recently. The Captur is now 423 cm long, has 264 cm wheelbase, 180 cm wide, and 158 cm high. I will say the Renault looks much more interesting, than the Skoda, but that’s for another episode.

I was recording on a cold and wet morning, and I do not have the luxury of a heated camper van on the set, where I could warm myself over a cup of tea, while my crew is setting up cameras. We do everything ourselves my partner and me. So excuse me, if I don't take my coat of, before I get in the car, because I'll catch a cold, and the I won't be recording anything.
Also, from an automotive engineer's perspective you should know everyone else is not an engineer, and in the winter they will usually drive wearing coats, because it takes 10-15 minutes for the cars to warm up. And they don't want their children to get a cold, because then everyone gets a cold, and everyone is miserable.

Great review. Cool looking design. But the clear engineering failures with the wiper coverage, aerodynamic impact on side window water, and the laggy gear mechanism point to an ownership disaster (what are the faulty bits you cannot see?). Also, that glove box is dumb AF. It might be large, but the slot opening is so tiny as to be useless.

Renault seem to make some very odd decisions sometimes. Don't get me wrong, I've had lots of Renaults, and currently drive a 2018 Koleos amongst other things. I think Renault are brilliant when it comes to exterior design. And I have to say this updated Captur looks great both inside and out. Especially compared to its rivals in the same sector. But there lies the problem! It *looks* great. When I sat in one recently at my local dealership, I was so disappointed with the perceived quality.
The inside *looks* fine... until you touch (almost) anything. Lots of cheap hard plastic everywhere you touch, the cheap tinny sound of the rear doors and boot when you close them, naff materials used on the upholstery, and so the list could go on. In Ireland and perhaps elsewhere, it's what we refer to as being _"All fur coat and no knickers!"_ I still love my Koleos though!

    Hello!
I enjoy all your reviews, because of your style.
You remind me,a bit of the old Top Gear, and that is a good thing.
I want to ask your oppinion.
What would you recommend between the kia xceed and the renault captur?
    I mean,build quality,sound insulation,ride quality...comfort,the way it deals with bumpy roads.
Wich one would be more suitable for a family of 4 ?
    Thank you in advance!!
And keep up the great work!

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks.
Xceed, because you get more car for your money. Neither of them is going to be particularly comfortable. If you want something good on bumpy roads look at the Citroen C4 Cactus and the new Citroen C4 (the coupe-crossover one) with hydraulic bump stops on the front suspension. I think the facelifted KIA Stonic may have those as well, but it doesn't feel as comfortable, as the Citroens.

      @@MarekDrives Ok,i am planning to buy a kia xceed,with the 1.5 tgdi engine,160 hp.
I also like the design,it looks a bit like a mercedes gla,in my opinion.
And the 7 years warranty it's an advantage.
I saw the c4,it looks nice.
But i lack the confidence in those 1.2 pure tech engines, those used by peugeot and citroen.
I read that there were issues with them, there have been recalls, but they didnt change anything.
Anyway,i will stick with kia, altough we have 2 renaults in the family, bought new.

It so happens I have the scirpt, so it takes me a couple of seconds to verify what I said in the review. I used the word "French" twice. Once to avoid saying Renault Captur over and over again (i.e. "French car"), and once to describe the heated steering wheel, which I think is really the first for a French car, at least as far as I remember. Nowhere in this review have I made a point that something is wrong with the Captur, because of it is French. Perhaps it is you, who should seek help, because it sounds like you have some inferiority issues.

    • @georgetudor1767

@@MarekDrives , my so called by you "inferiority issue" comes from your "review" on the Dacia duster from 5th of may, 2018, where you basically destroyed that car based on your own...issues. That video has more dislikes than likes: 484 dislikes vs 439 likes (never seen that before). I wonder why ? Lot of people with inferiority issues I suppose. So, that says a lot about your opinion on the Renault-Dacia group....

    • @MarekDrives
