A furtive glance - Olivier Messiaen's opera "Saint François d'Assise" (2002)

The documentation illustrates the work on the production of the opera "Saint François d'Assise" by Olivier Messiaen at the Deutschen Oper Berlin. Marc Albrecht conducts, while the internationally renowned architect Daniel Libeskind for the first time is responsible for the stage concept, set and costumes.
Ofelia Sala as L'ange and Frode Olsen as Saint François d'Assise sing the main roles. Messiaen's music is deeply rooted in his Catholic faith. "Saint François d'Assise", his only dramatic work, reflects his conviction. It took Messiaen eight years to complete the score of the staged meditation on the life and death of Saint Francis of Assisi. The world premiere took place at the Paris Opera in 1983 under the baton of Seiji Ozawa. The opera's great demands on musical prowess, particularly the demanding choruses, have so far prevented even large theatres from taking up the challenge of this important work.
Now the Deutsche Oper Berlin devotes its attention to this extensive and challenging undertaking. The documentation focuses on the explanations given by Daniel Libeskind and the way the protagonists read the opera. The film offers viewers a glimpse of the life behind the scenes, the dynamism of theatre, its problems, strengths and the emotions of the cast.
