  • ** 60 SECOND SAFETY ** Why bend warning signs say "crash here"
As I explained in the last 60 Second Safety video, my on-road courses emphasise just how much information about our riding environment we can glean from road markings and particularly from road signs.
Specifically, there are two things we need to understand about hazard warning signs.
Firstly, the triangular red and white signs with the pictogram in the middle don't JUST tell us what the hazard is; they are very often placed in order to warn of threats we can't yet see - and won't see until very late, by which time it's possibly too late to react.
So the second piece of information that signs give us is that they frequently provide early warning of locations where other road users have crashed. Often repeatedly, often seriously.
That's why when we spot a sign telling us there is a bend ahead, our response shouldn't just be a mental tick "oh yes, the road bends to the left (or the right)" but should trigger a much deeper question "just HOW awkward this bend ahead of us, and what do I NEED TO DO to be sure I can get round it?"
Ignore them and you'll find out why bend warning signs can say "crash here".
Being aware of signs is good. But being alert to their double-meaning and reacting is even better!

But people still crash on them...
...because they don't bother to get the basics right.
