  • JTech Amarok Flash Tune - Fixing the Auto Reverse Issue
    This Video was shot at Salt Creek, Coorong SA to show the problem that torque limiting creates on a VW Amarok TDI420 Auto.
    All Amaroks with the 8-speed Automatic Transmission suffer from this issue. The vehicle in this video is a 2015 Highline. Older models are much worse. At J-Tech Automotive Enhancements, we are able to remove this limitation, as well as giving you more Torque, better power, and substantially reducing your fuel consumption
    Thanks for watching!

    **Update**
    At the time of shooting this video we were using a product from Crispmods. As it was an early release product that could have been developed better, as soon as we stopped using crispmods we contacted every single customer that we had tuned their vehicle using a Crispmods file, and custom tuned them using our Australian software engineer. This was at our cost, and although we spent thousands of dollars doing this, the end result was that all our customers now had a much higher quality product with safety, reliability and guaranteed longevity. We have so much faith in our product that all customers vehicles that were re-tuned now have a 2 year unlimited kilometre warranty. The main issue was that we thought we were getting an Aussie product, and myself and others were led to believe that the owner of Crispmods was a software engineer, and was writing his own files. Unfortunately, it turns out that he was not a software engineer, and was just reselling files purchased from Sweden. This was all well and good, apart from the fact that the tunes could have been developed better as they were quite often running too rich, and not as suited to Australian conditions as they could be.
    In addition to this, myself and others were led to believe that the auto reverse issue in the Amarok’s was based on a “per gear” torque limiter.
    It turns out that although the ecu in the Amarok’s feature torque based architecture (ie with torque limiters), it is not based on a “per gear” scenario.
    I apologise if you were misled by this misinformation - it was what we were told and subsequently what we believed.
    However at the end of the day the end result is still the same. A stock amarok still has reverse limitations that can be overcome with an ECU Remap.
    It turns out, that the real issue is because of the heavy duty torque converter, as well as the gear ratios.
    As the torque converter is so heavy duty, a stock Amarok doesn’t make enough torque to get the torque to enter its “coupling” phase, and effectively transfer enough torque to the wheels.
    This can be altered with an ecu remap, by raising the torque limits, injection timing, injection quantity and “drivers wish” maps among others.

    Is the 8 speed auto good for climbing sand dunes or rock crawling? I'm curious since it doesn't have low range.

    i had the exact problem in the weekend.
    Stuck in the sand with the tide on the way in,just on dusk.
    no wheel turn in reverse trying to get out of a large rut.
    very stressful.
    i thought i was going mad as i could not understand what i was seeing.
    i live in wellington NZ.
    have you got any contacts in wellington who could fix for me.
    Definitely a Amarok weak point..
    Thank you for a great video...

      Hi Mark, to my knowledge there is no one that I know in NZ who can fix this issue, however I have had customers send their ECU via international express post to get remapped that way. The end result is the same as me seeing the vehicle personally.
      Having said that, if you want to fly me over for a holiday, I will only be too happy to oblige 😊 Let me know which option suits you best 👍. Cheers, Josh.

    dammm that would suck! reverse is so important in 4WD...you can get unbogged usually too
    I guess the only thing you can do is just decrease tyre pressure, use your traction boards to get out

    • @jtechautomotiveenhancement8951
      @jtechautomotiveenhancement8951  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DeepBlackice Yeah that doesn’t even work. The car simply doesn’t make enough torque to get past the torque converter as effectively as it could.

    For me there is something wrong with your gearbox/cluth, yes the vehicle is in the sand but is not stuck in there, no much torque is needed to at least turn the wheels... the ASR ( traction control ) is turned off ??

      Good Morning, the 2014 Amarok only has 1 Reverse Light Bulb (with the other side being the Fog Light Bulb).
      I would be checking Fuses next. If you have VDCS by Ross Tech, it can help to diagnose these issues.
      I have attached a link below:

      Otherwise, if you are local, please feel free to call us on 18004JTECH for further advice/diagnostics.

    Does the V6 model have same issue?

    • @jbcinzio
      @jbcinzio 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Mario, yes the V6 does have the same issue but it actually has a “per gear” limiter.
      This is not as highlighted in the V6 due to the higher torque output of the V6 Engine compared to the 4 Cyl.
      Either way, it’s something that we specialise in improving dramatically.

  • @MrPherty2
    @MrPherty2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    This is completely false. Press and hold the traction button for three seconds and it shuts the traction control system off, then you can reverse on any soft stuff with ease. You don't need a tune, read your manual and you'll be fine without this

    • @TheTripleDubya
      @TheTripleDubya 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seriously, that’s all it takes, because stuff me there is a lot of hullabaloo over this issue !?!?

    • @j-techadventures6312
      @j-techadventures6312 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, this is not the case. Yes you can turn off traction control completely using the method you described, believe me, TC can be easily disabled - but this is not a traction control issue - this is a torque limiting issue.
      For example, by pulling fuses out non the V6 you can even fully disable the stability control as well as traction control (which you can’t do via fuses on the 4 Cyl), but even with ALL electronic aids/nannies disabled the torque limits are still present. ONLY coding can modify this.
      For some people it’s more of an issue than others, but it does exist. Even the dealers and manufacturer have admitted that it’s “less than ideal”.

    • @j-techadventures6312
      @j-techadventures6312 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you are correct, but pressing for 3 seconds only disables the traction control.. the torque based architecture of the ecu limits the torque electronically across the board.

    Is the 2 litre a conventional automobile?
    My 3 litre v6 has a dual clutch transmission, so if I did that in mine it would have nothing to do with a torque converter, and everything to do with the clutch slipping

    • @jtechautomotiveenhancement8951
      @jtechautomotiveenhancement8951  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matteo Matteo yes the new V6 does have the same issue as they have a separate torque limiter per gear unlike the 4 Cyl.
      It’s not as noticeable when unladen as it naturally has more torque on tap, however once you put a big trailer or caravan on they can struggle.

    Josh what is the reason that VW do this, have you spoken to anyone from VW to ascertain the reasoning behind it?

    • @jtechautomotiveenhancement8951
      @jtechautomotiveenhancement8951  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Provan hi, the reason behind this is a combination of a tall reverse gear ratio and a Heavy Duty Torque Converter. The vehicle simply doesn’t make enough torque to get past the torque converter effectively.
      Cheers, Josh

      @@jtechautomotiveenhancement8951 that simply doesn't make sense.
      Let's deliberately cripple the vehicle, just because we feel like it. No manufacturer does this without very good reason.

    • @j-techadventures6312
      @j-techadventures6312 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jack Trade As a manufacturer, VW (like any other Manufacturer) has to mitigate the risk of warranty claims by building in a “component protection” factor. This makes the customer “take it easy” on the drivetrain components, even though the customer may be trying to brake something.
      Most European vehicles run torque based architecture so it is quite common.
      It’s kind of saving us from ourselves!

    • @trade1713

      @@j-techadventures6312 that's fine if you're talking about your golf, jetta, or passat.
      Here were talking about people going off road, in sand, towing a caravan where they need to reverse.
      Very specific kind of people buy the amarok.
      Let's say you're towing a caravan and you need to reverse it in a driveway, which is slightly uphill.
      WTF are you gonna do when they crippled the vehicle and you simply can't reverse that caravan or bog yourself out of sand in reverse as many do!
      And some people actually discovered this hard way.
      Volkswagen will not tell you this.
      Let's make tall reverse gear, similar to second gear ratio and to protect the car from abusing, we'll just screw them up by limiting torque.
      Why make that tall reverse gear ratio, maybe to race in reverse??????
      OMG, those engineers are just sometimes sooooo, I wouldn't say stupid, but frustrating!
      Why on earth make half finished product??
      Why?

    • @j-techadventures6312
      @j-techadventures6312 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trade1713 yeah true, I 100% agree that it could have been done better. The reverse gear ratio is ridiculously high for no apparent reason aside from (which is the only thing I can think of) is that the ZF8HP Trans is used in so many other vehicles that are AWD but not a typical “off-road” vehicle.. maybe VW got lazy and just picked the trans as the “most suitable option” and ran with it. I guess it probably costs a lot of $$ for a manufacturer to get someone like ZF to build (or even just modify) a specific transmission to suit a specific application.. 🤔
      It could have been done so much better.

      Many other vehicles downturn same thing, including the Landcruiser 200 Series.
