- In a previous video ( • Used Car Guy Special: ... ) I had a look at a 2010 Chevy Tahoe fresh from the auction that had some issues with the 4x4. We were able to determine that the front differential was smoked and there was some sort of issue with the 4x4 switch. Oh yeah... the engine was ready to pop out of it too! Let's get some stuff done shall we. -Enjoy!

I can't wait for part 3, I am not sure what the RPO and NPO stand for?
-RPO stands for *Regular Production Option* and is General Motors' standard coding for vehicle configuration options
-When you look at the RPO list in the glove box, code "NP0" translates too: TRANSFER CASE ACTIVE, *SINGLE SPEED* , SWITCH ACTIVATED, ALUMINUM

I love that Mr. O is able to eat crow and admit when he's wrong or made a wrong guess. He's humble and that's rare to find these days. If I lived in Upstate NY, you would have earned a customer 10x over with these videos you've cranked out over the years.
That buggered up bolt on the Axle shaft looks like somebody whacked on it with a hammer trying to get the axle engaged into the front diff. LOL

I'm guessing like you said the original switch burnout and they just got to replacement maybe from a boneyard and it just happened to have the 4 wheel low on it but it made the rest of it work kind of sort of so that's what you ended up with and you just assumed I've done the same thing myself have a great day

That would have screwed most guys. Imagine the can of worms if replacing the switch with the same one? Problem still there! Harness checks good. Must be the control unit! 😂 Good he caught that

I could never work with my wife all day. Even if it was a 2 person operation she would file a sexual harassment charge against me after like the first hour. I would never get any work done. Maybe one day I will be able to control myself around her and we can have an operation like mr and mrs o.

One of the many things that I really enjoy about this channel is his witty humor and how he seems to go out of his way to not swear. I'm not a prude by any stretch of the imagination, but it just seems nice and professional in just a bit of fresh air.

I always appreciate when someone admits they made a "boo-boo" and you are such a good diagnostician that you worked it out anyway. Your wife is a great help and comedy relief as well. I can't wait for Part 3, and the "test".

I once spent a good half an hour trying to figure out why a running light on a newer Jeep wasn’t working. Once I looked up the service data I realized that specific light is disabled in the North American version and I was chasing a ghost the whole time.
That can also differ between a US and Canadian model ... Canada requires DRL and the US doesn't, so they just build it the same and turn it on or off in software.
I once spent over two hours on an older Subaru trying to figure out why only the front marker lights were on but the headlight switch was fully off. After tearing into the vehicle and pouring over Mitchell wiring diagrams, I found the separate "park" switch on top of the steering column (for parking at night on narrow European streets I guess) - the customer had detailed their interior the day before and bumped the switch which apparently they didn't know was there either!
We'd sure love to have a closer look at the carnage inside that old diff. Nothing more captivating than auto repair porn.

Eric Paul - Judging by the color of the fluid we already saw the carnage. All the internals came out in liquid form.

It mat not actually be "visibly" entertaining. It's a splined shaft that wasn't inserted far enough, so the end is probably ground down, along with the gear carrier's splines.
Mrs O tried to help and just kept steeping into it. Not her fault. Its that husbands mind….haha. Nice work Eric. Glad you found another one locally. looking forward to episode 3.
Auction vehicles, and adopted shelter pets. They can’t talk to you and tell you their story, their likes and dislikes. But there is some joy in finding out on your own.

If anyone gives you grief about the way you use a file, Fireball tool did a whole test with back drag vs not and sure enough what it literally doesn't matter at all
He proved not only that, but that the drag back removes more material, clears the chips from the file, and doesn’t dull anything.
Cider Creek is a 5 hour drive from me in Connecticut but I’m always up for a road trip!

I don't think you're a ding-dong at all. You ended up putting the proper switch in the truck and saved the next buyer the frustration and confusion of wondering why their 4-low setting doesn't work. This is actually a proper fix. Kudos to you for a thorough job!
I had no actual idea that you could get a 4WD GM product that doesn’t have 4LO. Why is that even a thing? This particular Tahoe is just an expensive Subaru, not having a 2 speed transfer case.
I guess that old adage of - It might not be what you seem to think it is !!!! can apply here. The switch is not what it seems to be, it is the wrong one !!!! And, yes, that assuming seems to always come around and BITE you in the azz, doesn't it !!!! Reminds me of the time I put a new alternator in a van and it didn't work. Changed it to another new one, and it didn't work !!! So I went to a different parts supplier, got a different brand of alternator, put it on, and it worked !!!! Kept singing in my head that song - Two out of three are bad !!!!!! Nice of Mrs. O. to drop by and help, you sure have a finely dressed work staff !!! And witty also !!!!! Waiting on part three for the installation and the test - will you be calling the customer and saying: It's done, come and get it !!!! OR By geez, what else is the problem now ??? Full cup of coffee, a ding dong and a ho ho are ready when you are !!!! Just love these mysteries !!!! The Hardy boys need to step aside, ain't got nothing on SMA story plots !!!!!!

It's the little things like using the bastard file to square up a "boogered" bolt, writing left front and right front on the cross member, using zip ties to hold the drive shaft that make the price of admission worth while

One time at work they asked me to come out to the proving grounds to see why 5th gear wasn't working in a minivan. When I got there, I sat inside and yup, you couldn't shift it into 5th gear range. I turned the steering wheel to full lock and looked behind the front tire - and saw that it was a 4-speed transaxle. The 5-Speeds had an extension housing that hung out into the wheel well. Yeah, it was more than a few years ago, when they still had Amish transmissions available in minivans and the 5-speed was an extra-cost option. There were different caps that fit into the top of the shift knob to display the shift pattern. This vehicle just had the wrong cap installed. Oh well, it was a nice drive out into the countryside and a half-day out of the office.

that switch thing is the kind that usually only happens once. I once spent 3 hours diagnosing an ATM, ordered the parts and went back the next day. first thing I noticed the 2nd day was the motor I forgot to plug in... you spend the rest of the day kicking yourself for it. but then it becomes a great anecdote for the new guy you are training years later.

I have a 8.25 ifs with 3.73 sitting on my garage floor waiting for me to rebuild it. I did the same thing and purchased A unit from the bone yard and rebuilt it prior to putting in in my Yukon. The bearing kit is about $100.00 About an hour to rebuild. Rebuilt units run About 1400. Great vid can't wait for #3.

As a general comment, when a mechanic admits they made a mistake, you know you've found a really honest mechanic.
If a buyer said 4l did not work, even though its not equipped with it, it's broke. Replacing the switch takes care of that problem. Keeping the old switch for future troubleshooting, it's a win-win-win.

when I select 4 low. and here your putting your self down when in fact, what you think is other wise great news discovering truth. truth generally comes forth through controversy, difficulty.. your explanation I wrote down, so now I can go to the shop I use and tell them what I now know of it, and have them check to see what trasnfer case is in the truck. amen... single speed or two speed. I do have all the paper work and books that come with the truck. new; this is good news. thanks Eric. good job...
