Jason Griffith and Ian Hanlin are definitely my favorites. Jason has the edge and badass cadence of Shadow’s voice. And Ian has the stern serious side of Shadow. Like he’s a slightly pissed older brother idk.
As much as I like Jason's portrayal for how iconic it is, David's is still my favorite by a long shot. Sure, the character began to grow and, just like Sonic, his voice had to reflect that; Jason was a great choice. However, David had something that we have yet to fully regain with Shadow, and that is *range*; his neutral voice had a nice and comfortable ring to it, which allows the role to reach a wide variety of different tones without breaking character. Shadow in his debut was able to express so much, and David managed to convey him as this overconfident, determined and slightly resentful character, whom just underneath the surface would let up so much confusion, sorrow and kindness, and you could hear all of that in full clarity. What with the character being so "young" and lost still, this was a perfect cast. Today, I must say I really really like Kirk. He's not perfect, but I can totally see how far he's come since his first work as Shadow's VA. The current main cast has been around for so long and have endured so many changes along the years, I feel like they've managed to adapt and slowly but surely have come to produce a more confident and authentic take on their characters. Kirk's Shadow is very interesting, because the actor definitely has a wide range, but was perhaps initially hindered due to a lackluster voice direction (there's a whole lot of outtakes from his Rise of Lyric appearance that take Shadow's voice all over the place and are honestly kind of impressive if not downright hysterical). The more I hear of him the better he gets, the greater grasp he has on how Shadow would sound like, and what the character is about. He's come a long way, and you can easily trace and follow that evolution thanks to silly things like the Twitter takeovers. I'm happy he got to stay through an entire reconfiguration of the franchise, and Shadow in particular, and am so excited to hear his take develop further in Shadow Generations. That is, frankly, such a neat thing to witness.

David Humphrey is my favorite. I feel like he was the most natural sounding and the most expressive as Shadow. He started off pretty good in Sonic Adventure 2 but his inflections got awkward at times, but his emotional moments were golden. He improved a lot in Sonic Heroes and sounded more natural and relaxed, and he showed that he could sound dark as Shadow too. I also liked hearing his stoic line “You’ll regret this, Doctor…even if I’m not real, I’m STILL the Ultimate Lifeform Shadow The Hedgehog!” Jason Griffith is a close 2nd to me. He started off pretty rough but he improved quickly after getting into the games. However I disagree that his best performance was Sonic 06. A lot of people seem to overhype his performance in that game because the game got Shadow’s character right, but to me he was just whispering way too much to the point that he sounded brooding at times, and sometimes his delivery sounded straight-up awkward and forced, like when he says “DON’T TOUCH IT!” At least in Shadow The Hedgehog, even though he was given worse dialogue, he at least knew when to actually raise his voice and speak in a clean tone. In general I think he was trying too hard to sound edgier, but I thought he had the potential to get better. His best performance during his run as Shadow was Sonic and the Black Knight. He was epic in that game, but his perfect performance was in Sonic & Tails R since he was given a direction similar to David Humphrey in Heroes. Koji Yusa is great too, he set the gold standard for Shadow’s English voices, which is why I like David the best. Ian is decent, he’s a good mix of Jason and David, but sometimes he doesn’t fit Shadow, but he still does a fine job. Ryan Drummond did a good job filling in for David in SA2 with some of his lines, since I didn’t even recognize it was him as a kid, however when I could actually hear the clips, he did sound a little weird. It surprises me somehow that there are some people who prefer him over David, though. And Kirk is my least favorite of all of them since I think he’s the least fit for Shadow, which is a shame since he’s a great actor and he kills some of his other roles. In Sonic X Shadow Generations: The Dark Beginnings, he sounds okay, and I think he will do better when the game comes out, so I have higher expectations for his performance. I find it criminal that you would rank him over David Humphrey though, no offense. As for Keanu Reeves, I can’t wait to hear him in the Sonic Movie 3.
OMG!! I’m a MASSIVE Shadow fangirl and he’s been a huge influence growing up (no, I’m not edgy, I just REALLY liked the guy. 😅) but yeah, I’ll agree Ian does an AMAZING job with his voice currently!! I need to watch Sonic Prime. 😅 but I’ll agree, I also can’t wait to see Sonic 3 in movies!! I am HYPED!!

i used to not vibe with jason's take - but that was only due to 4kids's...transgressions, let's just say. for the 4kids actors, their takeover was a blessing. but i absolutely miss the original actors. so excited to check out Emi's latest sonic & tails R episode
While I’m not crazy about Kirk Thornton as Shadow, it is best that he is returning for SxS Gen since his voice is in the original base-game. I wouldn’t care if he got replaced after it though.

Which works for Sonic Boom, but for the mainline games it got so repetitive. It’s looking like Shadow Gens will actually take itself seriously and I’m super excited for that

As an older Sonic Fan, when people say they don't like Prime Sonic's voice, I have to be like, then you would've hated Jaleel White's Sonic xD But for me, I like when they make Shadow sound young. He may have been stuck in a tube for years, but he's still a teenager like Sonic

I recommend playing either Shadow in japanese or SA2. Because those games are trying to sell the darker vibe and man the english voice acting really fumbled it. For Shadow specifically, my opinion on the writing of him in this game changed radically after playing it in japanese, now i plain dont believe that he was changed at all or became too edgy. For SA2 i just love how japanese actors have this, yknow, actual voice acting going on instead of "doing a voice". That scene where Eggman gets a newspaper from Rouge for example, is actually supposed to be kind of a comedic scene, which isnt noticeable in the dub AT ALL. Like how Eggman reads the paper and his voice gets quieter as he realizes the paper is talking about Tails defeating him in Station Square, or how Rouge is acting so goofy while making fun of Eggman before immediately putting on her "professional agent" voice while talking to the president. Eggmans japanese voice actor was really my favorite as he could be effortlessly funny, or annoyed, or threatening and intense, while Deem Bristow (rip) kind of just growls the entire time with no change at all. Good stuff
As personality I like Shadow when written by Maekawa. I like Prime Shadow too. I don't like the current one in games. Too one note and flat. I love Shadow's design, is cool and pleasant to see. Also I like that he is a lefty. This makes him quite unique. As voice I love David's voice. Young natural and expressive. I like Jason and lan too. I don't like Kirk at all, too raspy, too aggressive without a reason (sometimes he sounds angry/aggressive in moments where Shadow is not supposed to be angry or aggressive) and too old. (is not a matter of age, there are VA that are same age as Kirk and can make great youthful voices).

Hot take - Jason's voice fits Shadow way less than Kirk. Jason feels like, to me, a preteen deepening their voice to try and be "edgy", "deep", and "badass" while Kirk's gruffness is exactly how I think Shadow should be. He's not someone pretending to be edgy, deep, or badass, he is all that while being traumatized from what he has went through and Kirk's voice reflects that. @@SonicBase626 I played some of Shadow 05 and his voice just felt off and in 06, while his story is great, every time I'm reminded of his dialogue (That alone is insufficient), I just laugh because it's cringey how hard Jason is trying. I wasn't a fan of Jason as Sonic either, he just didn't fit the character at all like Roger Craig Smith does. It may be that I have a massive anti-Jason bias but he just doesn't fit most characters in the Sonic series. Maybe he works for Silver? I don't know. Voices I wish for Team SSS are Sonic - Keanu Reeves Shadow - Hayden Christiansen Silver - Jesse McCartney All three have an it factor that their voices fit, though I am happy with Keanu as Shadow. Also, I read somewhere that since Ian is from Canada, the chances of him returning are almost nil and Kirk is in his late 60s so he likely retires in the next few years. One potential full time replacement I suggest for him is Newton Pittman who voices Gray Fullbuster in Fairy Tail. I really do recommend you listen to Gray's English dub and lemme know if you think his voice fits him.
You forgot Sonic Riders for the kinect. People did not like Kirks Shadow voice in that game. Which funnily enough, Kirk sounds very similiar to that voice in the upcoming Dark Beginnings teaser, and now people like how he sounds lol.

Ian Hanlin and Jason Griffith are tied as close 2nd for me. 2 different directions of continuing from David just a small step down. Ryan Drummond as Shadow isn’t bad. It’s just I hear Sonic in it too much. My main issue with Jason voicing Shadow but only when he’s also voicing Sonic. Also he has like 4 different Shadow voices. Kirk Thornton is last but fluctuates between last and Ryan Drummond for me because SOME of his performances are really good, and others are just…. Specifically off.
Also at first when i would hear kirk as shadow i thought of a snake talking cuz he sounded like one but i might be growing on him and hes doing better now 👍🏾
I know your copy of shadow is broken (rip), but if you’re interested in playing through the Japanese versions of games, shadow the hedgehog is really interesting to me for the difference in lines between versions. Compared to sa2 and heroes which have pretty faithful English dubs in terms of what the lines are supposed to convey imo, the shadow the hedgehog english dub gets skewed and changed much more

Wished Ian replaced Kirk in Sonic x Shadow generations. I liked Ian in Sonic Prime.

Hot take - Jason's voice fits Shadow way less than Kirk. Jason feels like, to me, a preteen deepening their voice to try and be "edgy", "deep", and "badass" while Kirk's gruffness is exactly how I think Shadow should be. He's not someone pretending to be edgy, deep, or badass, he is all that while being traumatized from what he has went through and Kirk's voice reflects that.

@@SonicBase626 I played some of Shadow 05 and his voice just felt off and in 06, while his story is great, every time I'm reminded of his dialogue (That alone is insufficient), I just laugh because it's cringey how hard Jason is trying. I wasn't a fan of Jason as Sonic either, he just didn't fit the character at all like Roger Craig Smith does. It may be that I have a massive anti-Jason bias but he just doesn't fit most characters in the Sonic series. Maybe he works for Silver? I don't know. Voices I wish for Team SSS are

Also, I read somewhere that since Ian is from Canada, the chances of him returning are almost nil and Kirk is in his late 60s so he likely retires in the next few years. One potential full time replacement I suggest for him is Newton Pittman who voices Gray Fullbuster in Fairy Tail. I really do recommend you listen to Gray's English dub and lemme know if you think his voice fits him.

You forgot Sonic Riders for the kinect. People did not like Kirks Shadow voice in that game. Which funnily enough, Kirk sounds very similiar to that voice in the upcoming Dark Beginnings teaser, and now people like how he sounds lol.

Ryan Drummond as Shadow isn’t bad. It’s just I hear Sonic in it too much. My main issue with Jason voicing Shadow but only when he’s also voicing Sonic. Also he has like 4 different Shadow voices.
Kirk Thornton is last but fluctuates between last and Ryan Drummond for me because SOME of his performances are really good, and others are just…. Specifically off.

I know your copy of shadow is broken (rip), but if you’re interested in playing through the Japanese versions of games, shadow the hedgehog is really interesting to me for the difference in lines between versions. Compared to sa2 and heroes which have pretty faithful English dubs in terms of what the lines are supposed to convey imo, the shadow the hedgehog english dub gets skewed and changed much more
