I did a quick try of this tonight. Extremely cool. Thanks for reminding me of it. It's actually one of the reasons I bought a Cricut...then forgot all about it. Omg... I LOVE listening to you. I'm so jealous of your voice. I have spasmodic dysphonia, and embarrass myself to death every time I open my mouth. What I wouldn't give to have a normal voice again. : ) You're awesome to do such detailed tutorials of such creative projects. Thank you so much!
I wish you could possibly know how much I've learned from you over the years. Thanks for sharing this technique. I will definitely be giving this a try!
I only just found you today and I'm beyond thrilled! I have been thinking about doing this with my Maker for quite a while. I watched your video, downloaded the file, watched the video as I performed the steps, and it worked! My printer won't take 110 lb card stock so I will print and cut two from lighter card stock and stick them together around the peremeter and around the design. I think that should work. Thank you very much for posting this tutorial. It is very easy to follow and understand. I look forward to making my own designs and embossing them for cards! Again, thank you!
I am so impressed with this tutorial. I leave so many not having a clue what I just watched. You made this so clear and solved a dozen issues for me . Thank you! I sub'd so I wouldn't miss a thing in the future!
Thanks so much for this, I was struggling to get it all to line up when working on a print then cut project. This worked really nicely. My own riff on it: I wanted to use kraftboard for my stencil, but unfortunately my printer wouldn't print on it as it's too thick, so I printed on normal paper, then sprayed the back with adhesive then stuck the two together. Worked like a charm.
Just wanted to say think you and I am using this technique on a fairly complex holiday card. I am using the method with the printed rectangle as the register - making 125 have to replace the stencil from time to time but the registration really works! Very cool thanks for teaching us. A little tip I never could figure out how to draw the registration border in design space, once I drew it in illustrator along with the other artwork all was good.
This was a terrific video but now I have many questions about how to go about making embossing diagrams myself. Is it possible to have a one-on-one session with you where I could discuss with you the project that I'm interested in doing and how I could create the files I would need to do the embossing. Thanks very much.
I have lots of additional information available at the blog post and video linked above in the video description. In addition, there is a new video that updates this process for the Maker and for new Design Space features. th-cam.com/video/2nLFnbFEgnw/w-d-xo.html If these don't answer your questions, please feel free to message me at cleversomeday.com/contact
Wow! Great tutorial! I'm working with leather and thinking through some of your shared techniques of embossing it. One of the best clear tutorials I've seen in my searches! Following you for future videos!
Thank you for the instructions. They are simple to follow and complete. I am so excited to get to emboss with my Maker, no need to buy an embossing machine. I am looking forward to designing my own creations!!
Great video! Thank you for speaking clearly and for giving precise explanation. And I like the way you pointed out the differences in machines. You've got yourself a new subscriber...I very much look forward to learning more from you!
This is so clever and easy once you see it that I had to hit my head and go duh! Thank you so much for sharing this and I will add that you don’t have to wait for “someday” - you are very clever!❤️😊
Great video and explanation and thanks for adding how things were done in the "old days". It all makes more sense. I have the Maker and had a lot of trouble with the stylus popping out or tearing the 80gsm paper. From your explanation, it gave me the confidence to try some other options to get the result I needed. I eventually got a great result by changing project to Deboss Tip and only debossing once on 216gsm paper. My stencil was also 216gsm as 300 gsm wouldnt go through my printer. The fish is a bit tacky to the touch from the mat (blue mat) on the embossed side but I guess that is to be expected. It's funny, when i was watching it, I was expecting the stylus or deboss tip to go backwards and forwards to "fill in" the areas but of course it just does the outline. . The magic of the stencil allows the paper to match up with the outline! Genius! Thanks again for making this video, you have opened up a whole new world for me and feel like I have learnt a lot.
Yes, I have done a newer video that shows using the Maker with the debossing tip. 216 gsm should work fine, especially with the debossing tip that has a shallower dwell anyway.
I am not sure if you record your video and then explain, but it's perfect! This is the first video of yours I've seen, definitely a new subscriber. Great job, very informational and can't wait to see your other videos. 😀
Oh my goodness! I am so excited about this tutorial!!! I love this design as I was wanting to do this to create some vintage designs for my bathroom tile wall for a little change in decor without a lot of painting a clean wall.. Just clean up my wall and add the designs to the tile blocks. Thank you....I plan to watch more and I just subscribed to your channel so I want miss out on more goodies:-)
I, too, really appreciate your tutorials and straightforward presentations. I'm still learning to use my Curio, which I bought with the idea of being able to emboss my own designs. The Curio embossing is disappointing. And I know now is limited to the 8.5" work surface; which is why I regret not buying the Cameo instead. I would, however, like to ask if this technique might be applied to use with the Curio. Thx
Hi there, great video, cool design. Unfortunately, I am new to Cricut as my husband *just* bought me a Cricut Maker 3. Anyhow, why was it necessary to print the fish, first?
Yes, it should work with the deboss tool. Look for the comment from @Kerrin Addis below as she has shared some additional info that might help with that.
This is awesome! Thanks so much for sharing! Do you think if you put the gold foil pressure product you use on your other videos in between the paper face down it would make it embossed with gold? I love the video of the embossing from the circuit, but I noticed it only does an outline of an object or font. I am wondering if this would work if you wanted the whole image filled in with gold for example? or if you had any other thoughts on this.
Hi there! Great instructional video! Thank you for sharing. I’d like to know what you’d suggest if I wanted to make embossed “stickers” or labels like such.
Have you done a embossing video for the maker? I would like to see how to emboss rather than Deboss with the maker using this stencil technique. But I don't know how to build a file.
This process works exactly the same on Maker if you have a scoring stylus (choose Edit Tools to pick stylus instead of scoring wheel, which will be default). If you have a scoring wheel, it still works the same except you would choose Deboss from the operation type menu (instead of Score).
Hi, thank you so much for your videos! I’m having difficulty figuring out how to get my own files set up to do this. Do you happen to have a video that shows what’s done prior to the point this video starts?
Yes, part 2 of this is linked in the video description above, but you might also want to see the latest video, which shows you how to prepare a file in DS alone. th-cam.com/video/2nLFnbFEgnw/w-d-xo.html
Kay, I truly love the way you explain this, but I'm so frustrated with myself and my new Sure Cuts a Lot 4 Pro program. I realize that I'm asking alot but I need help. Do you have any suggestions?
Sorry but I don't have any experience with the Pro version. Did you try the craftedge forum or any of the SCAL facebook groups? Use the contact form on my blog to contact me if you don't find what you need. Its easier for me to help that way.
O-M-G!!! I have wanted to be able to do this with the Cricut for years because you can design and make some very elegant note cards and other stationery. I can partially see the one you have done with the monogram - LOVE IT! I bet you can also make the stencil with the plastic stencil blanks you can buy from Joanns. I also wonder if you can get a deeper embossing by gluing 2 layers of card stock together and then setting up the Cricut to cut it twice, or if that might be too deep and tear the card stock. Once I dig my Cricut out of storage I think I might do some experimenting.
The paper tearing is the limiting factor. You can try different media for both the stencil and the blank to get the optimum for what you are doing. I use plastic on the Curio technique but to do that on the Cricut is more complicated because you have to print. It is already double cutting, but you could also try more passes. Tons of variables you can fiddle with. I would love to see what you come up with!
Maybe. The criteria are that it has to be cuttable, printable and a color that the Cricut can read marks sensor marks clearly from (white for Explore, wider range of colors for Maker). If the material for the stencil is too thick the card stock being embossed will tear.
Yes, as I mentioned, you can layer media, and this is what I do with various plastics such as Michaels plastic poster board. However, chipboard may be too thick to not cause the card stock to break when embossed. It really depends on how thick the chipboard is.
Hi! I love this tutorial, thank you so much. I am wondering if the stylus is only able to "outline" or if it is actually embossing the entire stencil area. I was trying to do a simple shape, following your amazing instructions, but then the stylus was only outlining the shape. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how I can make it "fill" the shape (emboss the entire shape, not just the outline of it). Thanks again!
Getting an outline is easy, and doesn't take a special tutorial. The whole point of my method is to give you a flat embossed area as shown in the samples. If you are following the video exactly and only getting an outline you may have a mismatch between the A and B sides of your machine. You can compensate for the mismatch by shifting the draw layer; or switch to a B side tool like the foil tool. This is covered in my newer embossing video.
@@cleversomeday Thank you for such a fast reply! I am following the directions of this video because I have a Cricut Explore 3 which doesn't have the debossing tool, so I am trying to do it with the stylus like you showed in the original video. Whenever I select "score" on the offset layer, it shows the dotted outline and I'm not sure how to get it to be filled even though the file is a filled file. Does that. make sense? I really want it to have the full flat embossed look but it seems to only outline.
@@laurenjoygreen there is no fill in the file itself. The "fill" or flat area is created on the cardstock by the pressure of the stylus bearing against the cut edge of the stencil below it. If you aren't getting a flat area when you remove the piece at the end, then it is because the score line is not lining up with the stencil edge underneath it (wrong position wrong size or both).
Thanks for your video. It is very nice. I am wondering the function of doing the method as a print and cut. Maybe I am missing something, and am very open to understanding. As for myself, as a test, I doubled common cardstock using a repositionable glue stick, cut (vs. print and cut) the choosen image at the poster board setting , removed from the Cricut, and weeded. I then changed the original image to score. I put a single sheet of common carstock on top of the cut doubled common cardstock, again using a repositionable glue stick, clicked "make it". The machine scored right over the stencil. For a stencil I wanted placed at a specific location on the doubled common cardstock (for example, to position it for a greeting card), attach the image where desired on a sized rectangle shape. When cut and weeded, go back, detach, change the image to score, attach, then "make it". My test worked, however the embossed area was not as deep as I would like. I have also used craft foam attached with repositionable glue stick, and merely scored an image directly on cardstock that I also used repositionable glue stick. The small rollers must be moved for this method as they will leave an imprint using the craft foam method. Mirroring the image to be cut, and then scored can be helpful in certain circumstances.
Very good question. The sensor marks are used to ensure precise placement of the tool with respect to the stencil every time and give you a stencil that is reusable even after you remove it from the mat. Positional error when just reloading the mat in the machine tends to be about +/- 1 mm, which in my experience was not precise enough for consistent, deep embossing results. (At the current time, you can not change your file in Design Space and re-run it without unloading the mat.) Direct embossing with a soft mat is the usual method for embossing with a diecutter. It is simple and effective for vellum and thin metals, but most people are not satisfied with that method for embossing card stock with the Cricut Explore series. The additional blade side pressure of the Maker may be a solution to this, but remember that this still produces line embossing, not flat, folder-look embossing.
I see! You are using the sensor marks as a guide. I am using/keeping the usual "throwaway" frame created by the cut-perfectly fitting my stencil into it for the reload to do the scoring. I have found many times I do not need to remove the stencil from the mat,, instead I remove the negative space..weeding. BTW - using craft foam for direct embossing a prepared image using just the 2 scoring images creates a decent result. Many ways to skin a cat!!!!! :-) Love it!!
Thanks for your comments. Still not sure you are following exactly what I'm doing. I have posted an alternate link above so you can try my file. Then hopefully it will make more sense should you want another way to skin the embossing cat :)
Oh yes, I tried you method. It works perfectly. My method produces the same embossed result, albeit more flexible as I mentioned, in that my method is not limited to the print and cut sizing, weight, and color of the material to be embossed or the material the stencil is made from, since I am bypassing a printer, and the print and cut limitations. Additionaly, one can easily create different sized and shaped templates, created in DS, to act in place of the print and cut "lines". I did move into adhering 3 layers to be cut, if using standard weight cardstock for the stencil. The SVG with it's inset/offset images is the key to great embossing with the Cricut!! Many ways to skin a cat!! Great video.
Unfortunately none of my 3 Explores were accurate enough without the marks, which is why I had to develop a much more complicated process. Hopefully #4 will be the charm. Enjoy the embossing fun, and thanks again for your comments!
What kind of file was the flat fish you emboss. If I'm looking for images. What should I look for. Simple images and what file formate. Love the fish it work well on my maker. Had to edit the tools for part two my stylus scoring tool.
You want stencil designs. The fish is from a free font called HFF Aqua Stencils. If you use the newer method, you have more flexibility with designs, so be sure to check out the latest embossing video.
How do you import these stencil font. Do you need convert the files. Or is it brought in the same way you upload a image. I'm assume the design space on the phone is limited. I have a computer with the software
@@catherinewittann6925 Fonts are installed on your system, then they appear the next time you open Design Space. Google how to install fonts on your operating system to learn how (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, etc).
I got the front to download. but now I need to get the full version of Sure cut a lot. I got the free demo version. So I can't export the file to cricut. I was fallowing your video on preparing svg file until I couldn't export. 😩😂
O cool so that takes the place of all the hand embossing tools and machines one can just do all the embossing things in cricut. The only issue i am worried about is it won't get the depth or 3d look as the other embossing specific tools ? humm not sure that be way cool. Seen it done with embossing a couple thin copper metal sheets to in cricut .
When I first came up with this, embossing folders were still almost all 2d, not like now when you can hardly find ones that are 2D. I have done 3d with this technique, but it is very complicated and not something I can distill into a teachable form.
Great video! I have a question. I notice you have the same Epson printer I have. Can I ask you where you purchase your ink? I’m unable to find it any longer. Thanks for any info you can give me!!!
@@pattiartiste1450 you can still use the scoring stylus or the foil transfer tool with the Explore Air 2. This video will show you how to make the files, which was what you asked.

Your channel name suits you ! Really Clever Somebody! One of the most creative person I have come across on TH-cam! Thank you so much for your clear, and fantastic videos! Btw, what can I do if my printer doesn’t accept heavy card stock?
Thanks for your kind comment! If printer doesn't accept heavy card stock, there are several options. My first recommendation would be to use printable magnet stock. That's more expensive, though, so another alternative is so print on full sheet sticker paper and then stick that on top of heavy card or poster board. You could also print on plain paper and attach with spray glue or xyron.
Thank you so much! Your prompt response is much appreciated!!!! I must learn time management from you too and how you get to do so much in so little time! I will try to support you in whatever way I can, even though I am financially tight. Your tips and tricks are really financial friendly! I am following you everywhere since I learnt about you lol. Your blog, your Pinterest! Thank you soooo much for all you do and most importantly your Honesty! :) Stay blessed
I do not use print and cut, so the weight of the cardstock is not an issue. Place and attach prepared image to a template you create to you specs in DS, hiding the scoring images when cutting, then hiding the cut image when scoring. Works very well for me, offers larger area for embossing, and is flexible, should you want to create a different template shape later.
Hi!! thank you very much for the tutorial and I want to do it with my designs but there is some steps in the creating the patern that I miss and I don't find where- can you help me with that.
probably not unless you had just the right thickness and backed it with something that would help it hold the emboss. If you can emboss it by hand with a brass stencil, you should be able to emboss it with this method. i don't ever remember seeing leather embossed with a stencil.
Once the stencil is done you can reuse it any time in the future by loading a new card blank on top and using the file as was set up the last time you embossed.
@@cleversomeday oh ok, I didn't save it☹. I guess I'm going to have to make it again, save it and once I open it again, should I just skip the print and cut part and go to the scoring? Thank you again for your kind response 🙂
@@ninascienceandcraftspace5535 Yes, open it again, save to your account (uncheck public, please) then hide the Attached set on the left so it goes right to the embossing step.
I am proud of myself, I made an envelope for my sons wedding invitations, I used the blue cardstock, used the debossing tool, then foiled inside the emboss line, it worked really well. Only problem is Now I have to have 50 sheets of foil :(
I'm confused, if I don't want to use your fish how do I use my own image and get the rectangles around the image. I wish you had showed how to do this by taking an image from your images in DS and showed us from there. I don't know how to get to the point you are starting from. I brought in an image but not sure how what to do next. Sorry, I'm a newbie at this. Thanks for any help you can give.
If you could do this entirely in DS then I certainly would have shown that. It can only be prepared in 3rd party software, which I show in the followup video.
I place then attach my prepared image* on a template I create in DS, hiding the images for scoring when cutting, then hiding the cut image when scoring. This method is a work around for using print and cut, allows for a larger area to be embossed, and is flexible should you want to place the image on a different template later. * The "prepared image" is a set of 3 images created in any vector graphic software. Inkscape has worked well for me, is available online for free, has a terrific online manual, and many tutorials on TH-cam. Hope that helps.
There is not a link to download the fish graphic as it is already included in the Cricut Design Space file linked above. You can find the graphic in the HFF Aqua Stencil font, however www.dafont.com/hff-aqua-stencil.font
A glitch in Design Space has lost the file (hopefully temporarily). I contacted support about this several weeks ago and have not yet gotten a resolution. If this is not resolved soon, I will try to recreate the file. Please check back and thank you for your interest.

Hi- I was wondering if we could create the file using chipboard instead of the 110 lb. cardstock?
Maybe. The criteria are that it has to be cuttable, printable and a color that the Cricut can read marks sensor marks clearly from (white for Explore, wider range of colors for Maker). If the material for the stencil is too thick the card stock being embossed will tear.
I wonder if we could "hack" the chipboard by adhering a frame of white paper with sensor marks?
Yes, as I mentioned, you can layer media, and this is what I do with various plastics such as Michaels plastic poster board. However, chipboard may be too thick to not cause the card stock to break when embossed. It really depends on how thick the chipboard is.
Thank you for the step by step, easy to follow tutorial.
Genius. I've been wondering if this was possible - I want to use my own designs and emboss them. Thanks much!
You are A-MAZE-ING!!! Thank you so much! I've had to do some tricks of my own to get what I want....today I learned a new one!
I have learnt so much from you. Thank you for sharing your techniques.
(At the current time, you can not change your file in Design Space and re-run it without unloading the mat.)
Direct embossing with a soft mat is the usual method for embossing with a diecutter.
I printed the directions from yur blog. Tried it! I came out perfectly! Now how do I do this with my own design of choice? Thank you for Sharing!!!
So glad to hear that! The link to the followon video is in this video's description above.
@@cleversomeday Thank you!!!!
@@catherinewittann6925 you don't need SCAL for this any more since DS has added offset. Please see my newer embossing video to learn how.
Thanks for any info you can give me!!!
atlex.com is one source
Thanks so much for the information. Appreciate it.
Awesome tutorial! How do I force the scoring on an area instead of the outline only?
that what the stencil underneath does. otherwise you just get a line with the exact same path.
@@cleversomeday So your just emboss along the lines and the rest of the paper just follows due to the stencil?
@@n3orun yes, as shown in the video and in this newer one th-cam.com/video/2nLFnbFEgnw/w-d-xo.html
I love this! I've been wondering if this could be done. Thank you for your video! I look forward to seeing more on this topic.
Excellent! Thanks so much! Is there a way to replace the fish image to make different files?
Yes please see the updated video on this here th-cam.com/video/2nLFnbFEgnw/w-d-xo.html
@@cleversomeday my explore 2 isn't compatible with the debossing tip. Thank so much though!
@@pattiartiste1450 you can still use the scoring stylus or the foil transfer tool with the Explore Air 2. This video will show you how to make the files, which was what you asked.
@@cleversomeday Thanks so much my friend ❤️
Very clever indeed! You have just saved me hundreds of dollars!! Thank you so much, I love it!
Yes, this is an advanced technique. I hope you will be able to find some basic videos in your language. Thanks for your kinds comments.

Wow what a great technique thanks so very much for sharing you knowledge of how to do this with us. !!
Hi!! thank you very much for the tutorial and I want to do it with my designs but there is some steps in the creating the patern that I miss and I don't find where- can you help me with that.

Love! You explained it so simply and well!
I would love to know how you embossed the circle monogram. Any tips would be appreciated
The technique is explained in the follow on video linked in video description above.
Oh Wow!!! Kay, I just came across this video. Thank You So Much, I so needed to know how to do this on my Cricut. You Are Such A Blessing...
Oh man!! I thought the explore 3 couldn’t do it. But this is a great “hack”!!
Great idea, can you do this with the brother scan and cut machines...thanks
jayc gylsen yes. Brother has a kit for this
I did it. Hooray! will send an image.
Hi 😊 can we do that on leather sheet?
probably not unless you had just the right thickness and backed it with something that would help it hold the emboss. If you can emboss it by hand with a brass stencil, you should be able to emboss it with this method. i don't ever remember seeing leather embossed with a stencil.
The video is great, but how do I go back to emboss more "fishes" in this case without the need of cutting again? Thank you
Once the stencil is done you can reuse it any time in the future by loading a new card blank on top and using the file as was set up the last time you embossed.

Only problem is Now I have to have 50 sheets of foil :(
Amazing and creative way to achieve the embossing goal! Thanks for this video..
Game changer!! I can't wait to try this. Thanks for sharing.
can you do Photo embossing?
What printer can use for 300gsm?
Very clear instructions ande very professional. Thank you.
Excellent video thank you so much for your clear instructions
If you use the Maker's debossing tip, is the effect similar to this, or not really?
If you do this process with the debossing tip, yes. Otherwise no.
I need to try this asap. This is beautiful 😍
Can I use me debossing tip to score?

gostaria de saber se as fontes que estão instaladas no meu computador podem ser usadas na hora de escrever dentro do desing space.
Yes, but the pen will follow the path of the blade so you will get the outline of the letters, unless you use a very thin font.
Can you use the Debossing blade for the maker in place of the stylus for this tutorial?
I have not, but I am told that you can.
