Wine in the Bible had a purpose. It aided in digestion and also killed germs in the stomach. It is the over indulgence that it becomes wrong.

Not drinking alcohol is similar to the purity movement. Christians saw something wrong with culture, excessive drinking and drunkenness, and overreacted to it. I'm saying this as a person who has never drank alcohol in my life. There is real danger in alcohol, but the Bible is clearly not against all alcohol consumption.

That's a whole lot of ignorance of not just Christianity, but morality in general. Being taught to refrain from things that are bad for you and have negative consequences is not ever a bad thing. That is the problem with unbelievers.

@@dennisperez1896 “Those who linger over wine,
who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
      when it goes down smoothly!
32 In the end it bites like a snake
      and poisons like a viper.”
This is the full context. “Those who linger over wine” are the people in question. People who cant stop thinking about alcohol. These are people who are addicted and drink their woes away in the full proverb. If youre a drunk and it has control over your life, stop thinking about wine. But if it is sinful to sip or “even look at wine”, Jesus would be a sinner as a occasional wine drinker (and wine maker) so it’s important not to take this out of context. Ofc im not not saying this to promote drinking because the spirit of Proverbs is meant to communicate care that should be considered when drinking, but I’m saying this so Christians don’t have the pride to judge others for having a sip here and there and not take bible verses out of context.

I grew up in a Christian home where my family also didn’t bring alcohol into our home. I looked at alcohol as bad. Then I turned 15 and my parents left the church. My mom started drinking and getting drunk, saw my father drunk for the first time and luckily the last time in my life. It was a scary time. They raised me one way and then the next thing I knew my family strayed from God.

I’m turning 20 this year, so I’m getting closer and closer to the legal drinking age here in the U.S. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever drink. I see no purpose in it. I think it could drive me away from Jesus than closer since I have no experience with it. I would rather not play with temptation and honor God in every way possible.
I had the opposite experience from you. I lived in a Mexican “Catholic” household (we are Christians now), and drinking is standardized at a young age. Our party culture tainted my image of drinking since it is done to an extreme and the worst of people comes out. I understand what you say in your video completely. My sister in Christ and I had the exact same conversation when we were in high school and come to the same conclusion: Wisdom is key.

I grew up as a pastor’s kid so we never had alcohol in the home. My parents strongly were against drinking. This caused me to incorrectly view drinking and more importantly people who drank in a judgmental way. Whenever I’d see people drink I’d look down on them. My beliefs and views have since changed. I am still a strong Christian but I have an occasional beer at home or when I’m out with my wife at a restaurant. But I don’t go into bars or restaurants for the sole purpose of drinking. It still is a turn off to me and something I struggle with when I would attend a wedding or event where people are getting drunk. I generally refrain from drinking in those situations or when I’m around people who may struggle with drinking too much. I believe smoking to be much worse for you than drinking occasionally. And that’s something I was around a lot as a kid as three of my grandparents smoked. But they were never looked at in the same way as people who drank alcohol.

Joshua, I have struggled with the same mindset of looking down on those that drank and even those that smoked. I would say that in my household smoking never reared its head but those at my school were the ones who exposed me to smoking (I have never smoked btw). I think we also need to keep in mind that if we are causing a fellow brother in Christ to stumble in their walk with the Lord than we should not participate such things.

I used to drink to get drunk because I thought as myself of being really shy and awkward, alcohol was lulling me into a false sense of being more social and approachable when I'm drunk. So one day after a night of drinking with friends not being able to sleep because the alcohol made me feel so sick, I decided to go 3 months without drinking at all. It open my eyes to whole new side of me not even I knew. I was able to have meaningful conversation with people at parties and still remember them the next day. I didn't need alcohol to be a sociable person, it was quite the opposite I was better at connecting with people Sober. Since then I've been find my feet and my balance when being social. I've set limits to my alchol consumption at home and at social events. Being drunk to me feels like I lose connection with God and His will over my life. So like you mentioned consuming alcohol is not a problem but the why that often leads people astray.

Great video Isaac! It’s always nice to hear that I’m not the only one as a Christian who chooses not to drink or associate with it in any way. I personally have had many temptations to drink because I feel in today’s society drinking to get drunk is glamorized too much that I often get sucked into wanting to try it. I have never taken a sip in my entire life nor do I plan to. Reason being I just don’t see any benefits for me at the moment. Also thank you as well for speaking about how people don’t need to be drunk to have a good time! I’ve had how many people tell me, “you got to at least try it” “you’re in your 20s live a little”... Oh my goodness! I love this video! You did such a good job at unpacking all that there is to this topic. I have grown up in a house hold where my parents occasionally will have a glass of wine for dinner, or my dad might crack open a beer with some friends at a barbeque. However, a really close friend of mine struggled with alcohol when we were in high school and ended up in the hospital. My friend was a stronger Christian than I was, and to see someone like that be that easily affected by it made me decide that I won't have anything to do with alcohol. Romans 13: 13-14 "Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh." This was a personal conviction, I see so many Christians forcing their personal convictions onto other believers and that can be a dangerous place to be in. I totally agree Isaac, if you are relying on alcohol in anyway than that is when you know it has gone too far. I see so much encouragement when you do not back down from "taboo" topics. Loving these videos! Keep up the good work!

@@nordscan9043 I can definitely see where you are coming from. I do think that you are making some presumptions. While a glass of wine every night can and probably will make people sluggish, a single glass twice a week does not necessarily cause "sluggishness". Beer, on the other hand, is somewhat similar however, beer is more often consumed in higher quantities than wine, but then again we run into the same presumptions. If you have a 3-4 beers every night then of course you will develop a "beer belly" (unless you are taking preventative measures). Your last point is clear and I 100% understand your point of view. However, the fermentation of grapes causes an alcohol to be produced and alcohol is a depressant which tends to make one sleepy. Then again, your presumption, if taken in excessive amounts it does indeed cause sleep issues.

If you disagree that's awesome tell me why, but don't attack me, I am explaining from my point of view. Yes I did watch your videos, and no I don't "love" to be ignorant and biased, in which I don't think I have been either one. I am still holding to the context of Christianity because that is my worldview. Please let me know what you think.
With regards to the first video, while there is some good content her specific situation is much more complex than the initial question. She was dependent on wine, then breaking for 30 days, this resulted in a sudden lack of alcohol in the body for which it was adapted to. So when she had her one glass after 30 days, this jump started all the dormant dependencies on alcohol, which caused her to feel that sluggishness that you described her having. This is a case by case scenario, if you develop a dependency on something it becomes hard to live without that thing no matter what it is.
The second video (first portion of the documentary) demonstrates the likelihood of food intake while in consumption of beer. This video makes a good suggestion as to why people get hungry while drinking beer. However, this is an isolated experiment. This study cannot account for the different people, lifestyles and mental states that all of us possess. That is where I return to my previous comment, if preventative measures are in place to stave off the "beer belly" then one will not form. For example those football players do not have "beer bellies" yet I am safe to assume these beers that were consumed were not their first. Therefore, if a person is active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle then the "beer belly" is not a concern.
The third video shows how two glasses of whiskey affects sleep. This portion of the documentary is directed at an audience that has not watched Isaac's video and who has not been reading our conversation. Your first comment you said that "alcohol isn't a sleep aid as it messes up your sleep" This is true if we add some conditions. For example this statement becomes true when we add excessive drinking. However quantity is not the only variable, the percentage of alcohol has a large effect on the discussion. For instance, the average whiskey has 40%--50%; whereas the average wine has 12%. This is where fruit (grape) based alcohol and grain/fungi based alcohol diverge. The difference between a glass of wine which makes one sleepy and the presumption that a beer or whiskey causes sleepiness; is melatonin. Grapes from which wine is made from, contain levels of melatonin which is a hormone that has an affect on the sleep cycle.

Good video. I'm also from a christian household and never had alcohol in our house or drank it. I'm just used to hearing that drinking is bad and we shouldn't be doing it. My dad was an alcoholic before he was saved, so he def does not want anything to do with his former life.
But in church there was kind of always looking down on drinking and stuff, like you weren't a good christian if you did.
It`s not until last year I`ve been starting to look at it differently, but its hard to change the way you think when you've been growing up and hearing something for your entire life.
I had someone explain it to me really well and that is, that everything we do in and with our bodies should be God honoring. So as you said, not to drown our sorrows or just to get drunk because that is wrong (Eph 5:18).
And he also said that in everything do we should be confident that it is okay and God honoring. So if I feel convicted by the Holy Spirit and not comfortable drinking (even just a glass), I shouldn't because I need to be confident in my actions. Therefore I am abstaining from it, but I'm trying to learn not to judge a christian who chooses differently. Its a process;)

It is completely reliant on the heart. If you are drinking to medicate, fulfill, escape or suppress something it's a sin, if you are reliant it's a sin. If drinking is something you do simply out of enjoyment no problem. It's like a donut, no problem eating a donut here and there, consuming a box of donuts a day, now there is the problem. At the end of the day, we all have our own convictions, and some need to abstain completely and some can partake regularly, it's the why that matters.

    I never really enjoy alcohol.
    - Beer, I drink one or two if the situation is right, but the more I drink during the evening, the less I like it. And people claim that if you drink a bunch you start to like it. Can't confirm it. I drunk plenty for that effect to appear but I like it about as much as the first one I drank.
    - I dislike wine.
    - I like some liquors. But my environment doesn't drink it so I never really drink it myself
    - Are they called soft drinks? Like the ones with alcohol but in sweet? I don't see the point of them.
As you can see my drinking habit can be described a scarce. I think I was once probably drunk but normally I don't drink enough for that to happen. I just don't see the point of it and I don't feel better the more I drink. It's closer to the opposite. Especially with beer.
I don't mind that at home I'm basically abstinent and in certain environments I drink not much. It is somewhat of a curious behavior for people around me but who cares. Nowadays people don't have that much of a problem when people don't drink. I think I make my life hard by drinking some. Because then they think I go along with them and halfway through I just say nop, won't do anymore.

The English translation of the Bible omits the different types of wine. If you research the Hebrew and Greek words for wine you will find there are varying degrees of fermentation and the water that Jesus turned into wine was most certainly freshly squeezed grape juice because the best was saved for last. The best wine in biblical days was fresh grape juice while these days people consider the oldest and most fermented to be the best. That's why Jesus said not to put new wine into old wineskins or it will be ruined. When we are made a new creation we are the new wineskin and are to be filled with the new wine which is the Holy Spirit. What good is it to put old wine into a new wineskin for it shall surely burst. Just thought I'd share, I've done a lot of research on this topic.

I don't doubt your knowledge on the subject nor the time alotted in studying the topic, but you are most definitely not correct in interpretting the parable of the wineskins.
The parable has nothing to do with the abv % of the wine and everything to do with the fermenting of wine. Once old wineskins were used for the fermenting process, they were already stretched and weakened, thus the need for new wineskins each time. If they reused the wineskins they would burst and ruin the wine completely.
The purpose of the parable was to explain how the old traditions could not contain the new covenant that came with Jesus Christ. Again illistrating the 'out with the old and in with the new' concept brought to our attention regarding the new covenant in Hebrews 8:13.

I have been a drinker for a LONG time before coming to Christ. I have come to a point regarding alcohol that I just dont want it anymore. For a couple reason. One being the command to not be drunk, simple. The second being that I dont see the point in having only one or two drinks because what is the point? The point of drinking alcohol is to get that buzz on is it not? Well, if I only drink one or two it will not affect me. I can drink 4-6 before I really start to feel anything. And I know that if I get to that point I will want more because thats what alcohol does, you will want more. Once you get to that buzzed state you are highly unlikely to say no to more drinks. Before you know it 4-6 has turned into 12-15. I have a high tolerance so even besides the command to not be drunk its simply a waste of money for me because 1-2 even 3 drinks wont really do anything. So anymore I just dont want it.

and wine to the bitter in soul.
Let him drink and forget his poverty,
and remember his misery no more.
    - Proverbs 31:6,7
This verse indicates that strong alcohol was used as a pain reliever for those who were terminally ill or dying.
Stop drinking only water and use a little wine instead, because of your stomach and your frequent ailments.
    - 1 Timothy 5:23
Obviously if you have stomach problems, then, there might be a place for it. But, that would depend on the stomach ailment you have.

We have freedoms as Christians, but we should be careful of not excercising those rights around others who would think it a sin so as to not cause the weaker conscience to fall.
I drink a bottle of beer or a glass of wine on occassion. But I would never do so in the presence of my grandparents who believe alcohol to be a sin. I know that alcohol is a gift from God and is to be enjoyed just like everything else that is good on earth. But I will give up alcohol completely for the sake of my grandparents if need be. Because of course their faith and walk with Christ is more important than any small pleasure I might have with alcohol.

Just my 2 cents, a point that all Christians should note is this - we shouldn't drink alcohol not only because of our faith or obedience to Christ but also because we don't want to see our weaker brother or sister fall......as Paul says, I have become all things to all men. I don't use my liberty in Christ to cause my brother to fall for conscience sake. Telling ppl its okay would not help because we all have a sinful flesh and it wants what it wants but we (who know Christ) are to put to death the things of the flesh (by walking in His Spirit) and that include drinking, revelry and the like (all fleshly passions).
Yes, drinking and eating or not drinking and not eating doesn't bring salvation but wisdom in this life tells us the strong in faith are to guard/help build up the weak in faith against stumbling. Our witness is not only to the unsaved but to the house of faith as well. Many will disagree but Christ always reminded His disciples to wise/cunning as a serpent but harmless as a dove in their service to men. Blessings.

In the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, members don’t drink. It’s against the word of wisdom. It was a revelation given to Joseph Smith In the 1800s. The inquisition into the matter was partly inspired by his wife Emma. God wants us to keep our bodies healthy and He doesn’t want our senses dulled or for us to be plagued by addiction. He wants us to have unvetted access to Him.

I see no issue with having a beer every once in a while. As long as you don't overdo it. I've been drunk a few times and got sick once before I started my walk with Christ, and even then I told myself I'd never go that far again. Like everything in life you have to practice moderation. As with liquor I tend to not drink it much at all except for social occasions (like barbeques or cook outs) and even then I'll have one mixed drink and that's it. I totally agree that you don't need to be drunk to have a good time. I have a lot of fond memories in college with friends that didn't involve alcohol, but those days are long gone lol. Now all I do is work haha. Anyway man it was a great video and I really enjoyed it. God Bless!

I used to have that mindset where I couldnt have REAL fun with other people unless we were all drunk. And while yes being a little drunk can be fun, theres a threshold you dont want to cross where you're blacking out, have no control, are an absolute mess, and wake up hungover and regret drinking. Not to mention how vulnerable being drunk can make you. I know a handful of girls who were sexually assaulted while drunk. People can die from alcohol poisoning, alcohol addiction can ruin your health, mind and life, it can ruin your ability to do your day to day tasks and responsibilities, drunk driving, stupid drunk impulsive decisions that can leave you injured, others injured or dead, property damage, financial issues. People who fall into temptation easier while drunk and cheat, gamble, etc its not worth it. Im thankful I haven't had horrible experiences while drunk but now that I'm a Christian, I drink less alcohol when going out with a friend so I dont get drunk. Now I'll just do it for a celebration

  • @ThePaulKM

Honestly, this same argument could be used for chocolate cake even (and I know he said 'all facets of life', I watched the video)
I am a little tired of Christians shifting attention to alcohol all the time. Because, yeah it's kind of a given to not overdo it, but is that ever not the case?
Using this argument gets us into the mindset of; 'well yeah, it's not a sin persay, but it can become one, so it's better to just not do it.' Okay, then eating chocolate cake isn't a sin, but overdoing it can become a sin. Is it better to just not eat chocolate cake then? Or soda. Soda is arguably so much worse for your health than practically any alcoholic beverage on the planet. Honestly, I would probably advocate to stop drinking soda, because of how harmful it is. But we never see Christians on the frontlines against soda.
Essentially, what I'm getting at here is this. I don't care if you're against alcohol personally or not. What I don't understand is why Christians make this into such a huge issue. Don't want to drink alcohol? Fine, don't do it. Want to drink alcohol, but want to be a Christian? Fine, drink alcohol! There is literally nothing about Chrisitanity that prevents you from having alcohol. And making it into such a huge deal that Christians do actively harms our outreach to unbelievers, because they think Christianity is about all of these rules like every other religion. It's not. Christianity is different than any other religion in the world, because there is no set of rules that we can abide by that will get us into heaven. Yes, we are called to live a Godly life, and there are things that offend God, but how does alcohol enter the equation? Alcohol is good! We will enjoy new wine with Jesus in heaven! Obviously, God created alcohol for us to enjoy and take pleasure in.
So please Christians, stop making such a big deal on alcohol. There is no reason for it, and it ultimately does more harm than good to the kingdom of God.

And I don't see how my comment perpetuates any problems or how it might be a problem in general. What about my comment in particular concerns you? Please elaborate if you truly wish to enter into an honest dialogue regarding this issue.

@@onedayatatime6646 Abusing any substance will have consequences.
Over consumption on surgar and other processed foods can cause all sorts of health issues as well as early death. This with a combination of soda in an individuals diet has a much higher likelyhood of producing an early death than the consumption of alcohol. Over eating or over drinking are both sins and have unintended consequences, but I don't ever see Christians getting enraged by the lethal doses of soda or desert consumption that is currently taking place in America.
I'm not suggesting Christians launch an all out attack on all these other substances to even out the field, but am merely stating that this inexplicable bias that Christians have toward alcohol is unwarranted and needs addressing.
I thank you for your encouragement in my walk with God, as I am sure you are in a very stable place as well. I know that we should never become complacent as Christians, but always be in a diligent fight in mortifying the sin of our flesh and keeping true to God's Holy Word.

@@onedayatatime6646 Likewise, I appreciate the civil discourse regarding this issue.
Again though, I have no problem with those who choose to forgo alcohol on principlel, as I also avoid certain things on principle as well. It's when we are told from the pulpit at churches to abstain from even taking that first sip of alcohol where I have a problem. I don't disagree with the idea of not 'taking the first sip', but its when Christians restric the phrase to apply only to alcohol as though it is the be all evil in the world where I think we need to have a talk. There are things in my life that I show a particular weakness to where I will abstain from 'taking the first sip' so to speak, but alcohol is not one of those things. I will enjoy the occasional glass of wine at night with my wife or a beer with friends as alcohol is not a particular weakness of mine. I regularly fast from alcohol amongst other substances for various reasons (though I must admit it is much more difficult for me to give up coffee than any alcoholic beverage), and thus can speak with some validity to that claim.
For those who are particularly weak to alcohol however, I would recommend to abstain from even 'taking that first sip', as well as with any other temptation an individual may be particuarly spirtiually weak. But to make this all about alcohol as to pretend that all Christians share in the same temptations is disingenous. I do think it is wrong for Christians to create a special category for alcohol as so many Christians do, acting as though alcohol is somehow unique in its tempting qualities. By doing this, we turn alcohol into a taboo, and as an unintended consequence, make those weaker Christians judge others who partake in the consumption of alcohol and also bolster their pride as though they are somehow better than others who drink. Of course, when we are around such Christians who would believe drinking alcohol or eating certain foods to be sins, I think Paul makes it very clear that we should not cause those brothers to stumble by taking part in the freedoms we have in Christ (Romans 14:20-21).
This kind of teaching in church divides the body of Christ when there is no good reason it should. This is ultimately why I take issue with singling out alcohol to other temptations. Although I take no issue in those who refrain from alcohol on a personal basis, I do take issue with using alcohol to divide the church as is so common today.
I do very much appreciate the civil dialogue though, as I believe discussion such as this is important amongst Christians.

Of all the things you may consume in God's creation, I personally wouldn't go out of my way to have anything that acts as a mild sedative and impairs my thinking. I could definitely have SOME without getting to the point of drunkenness, but I really don't think it's worth finding out what my tolerance level for alcohol is. If I were to ever have it, I'd have it for the unique flavor, not for the ethanol in it that mildly sedates me--for a celebration, the last thing I'd want is something that would even slightly dampen my brain functionality. I'm there to celebrate, why not revel in THAT joy instead of the body's reaction to ethanol? At least with sugar, the body can process it and use it rather than need to filter it out and get rid of it. In everything you eat, drink, and do, do it all for the Lord. I ain't bouta get mildly sedated for the Lord, but I'll say yes to a root beer, there's a unique flavor without any ethanol in it. :P

I rarely drink and when I do it is almost always only with other people. My family has a history of alcoholism and addiction plus alcohol is expensive, usually tastes bad, and is basically drinking estrogen. The only time I would argue it is wrong to drink alcohol is when you are with someone that has a problem with drinking.

The first sentence of your comment reminds me of that famous Dos Equis beer commerical with the 'most interesting man in the world' Where he always says at the end: "I don't always drink, but when I do I drink Dos Equis."
