    Hi! I ate this fruit almost 40 years ago when I was a child and when I lived in Tuléar (South West of Madagascar) , I almost forget the taste but I just remember that it was so good...thanks to make me recover this memory!

    Your description of how the Lala palm fruit tastes reminds me of the “Boston Brown Bread” we used to get in cans. Do you know what I’m talking about? It was dark brown and it tasted very bread-y and very molasses-y.

      I was just going through decades of my grandmother's home canned goods in her massive pantry & found her version of the same bread.
      It's from the late 90's and still sealed, without rust on the lids.

      It's 100% illegal to import non-indigenous plants or seeds into the US. You have to go through quite a bit to import non-indigenous plants or seeds if you intend to sell them.

      I am sure a botanic garden in Zone 10, 11 would be delighted to get these seeds and know enough not to let it escape into the wild. There is also the Rare Palm Society and those people are into palms that are so rare that they can only be grown from seed since there are no nurseries that grow them in the US. My father in law was a member and his garden though not big in San Pedro was absolutely incredible.

      @@WeirdExplorer travel as a traveller-know the locals, their customs, cuisine etc. Not as a tourist though. I have had the opportunity to walk in the western ghats of India for a couple months and it was awesome.

    I wonder what things braising, baking and stewing would do to such a fruit. Something like kvass? Would it be amazing with jam and butter? How about turkey and gravy, a side with the cranberry? Very jealous of your East African journey. I've seen photos that blow my mind thinking of seeing in person.

      People were very honest for the most part. Only times we were overcharged were in touristy areas

      $1 can get you a lot there. A meal at a restaurant or a couple kilos of food from a market.

    I see that it seems very hard/tough and dry. It sounds like something that might be really good if let to soak up water, grilled, or cubed and mixed in with fruits or something. I don't know cause I'm not a cook and have never had it tho (obviously) lmao

    Is it bad that I would go into my local botanical gardens and take small exotic fruit off the trees to try (jaboticaba, coffee fruit, different citrus, cacao, etc)?

      I would probably ask permission to harvest some small amounts of fruit in exchange for a donation. You don't want to mess up a hybridization program or a program of harvesting fruit for seed to send to growers for a endangered species.

    So dangerous watching all these rare fruits, cause I go on this crazy thing where I would do almost anything to get the plant/seed to grow it in our already overgrown fruit tree backyard. I paid $60 for 3 cuttings one time i found out about a particular fruit variety.

      @@WeirdExplorer It's very common, but it's not eaten whole. It's crushed into chunks, steeped in hot water, then sweetened and consumed as a cold beverage in the summer. I personally enjoy it quite a lot. It's also used as a home remedy for high blood pressure, even prescribed to hypertensive patients as an effective means of maintaining their blood pressure. No idea if that's a valid claim though.
      Oh and by the way, a similar beverage is made out of carob (sp?) and both beverages alongside other traditional ones are sold by street vendors. They're quite tasty and refreshing in the oppressive summer heat.

    Being someone that's eaten this a lot, I can tell you that it's a mistake to swallow the pulp! You just chew it and squeeze the flavour out then spit out the little fibres. I do like your description of the flavour.. raisin bran muffin.

      @@SY-ok2dq it grows naturally where I grew up. The fibers are very short and stiff causing a lot of pain spiking and scraping the throat and gut.

    It never ceases to amaze me how many crazy fruits ar out there.
    Every video you put out reminds me how boring the varieties of fruit we have here in sweden are.
    The most exotic we get here is mango, papaya, starfruit, physalis and stuff like that. The same kind of "exotic fruit" that you get all over the world.
    The only good stuff in sweden are the berries when they are in season.
    Your videos are always fascinating! 👍

      I would like to eventually explore Scandinavia to find a few fruits. I really want to try cloud berries, & fresh lingonberries, but there are many endemic fruits in the area like sea berry, elderberry and some other arboreal wild berries. There are breeding programs in places like Saskatoon, Russia and other places for ultrahardy temperate fruits like juneberries(one of my top 5 favorite fruits), honey berries, arctic kiwi, five flavor fruit, many blueberry relatives(bilberry/cranberry/crow berry/tons of huckleberry/arctic raspberry, strawberry, bush cherry, and others that would thrive in your area.

      I live in Stockholm though, so we don't have nearly as many varieties of berries as northern sweden, but we can definitely get them in the store.
      We mainly have lingonberries, raspberries and blueberries (if the summer isn't too dry, which it has been for several years now ☹️)
      Cloudberries ar really unique. They taste like honey and makes one of the best types of jam.
      They have seriously large and fairly hard seeds though. That sometimes throws people off. I love them though.
      My favourite is camenbert cheese topped with cloudberry jam, and then baked shortly in the oven until it melts. Unbelievably delicious! 👍

      @@Dockhead They're one of several species of trees called Baobab, which are all in the Adansonia genus. The name of that particular species (at the start of the video) is Adansonia grandidieri
      .
      I agree, they look amazing! Someday I will see and/or grow them personally. I've actually got a picture of them as my desktop pic at the mo. Mind expanding stuff!
