It's been over 20 years since I've looked at hiking and camping gear much less done any hiking and I just cant get over how much lighter everything is now. If I'm not mistaken when I used to go with my dad so many years ago, our packs weighed at least 35 lbs, if not 40 or more with everything needed for two people, for no more than 3 or 4 days. He had top of the line gear for that time also. I'm sure a lot of the weight was food but it's still amazing to me how much the gear has improved since I spent time with my dad hiking in the 90's.

I’m sure you get a lot of internet quarter backing, but I’ll throw my hat in and suggest the 0 degree UQ with the 20 TQ, at least for the first week or two

Thanks, for helping me set up my gear for my thru hike of the AT next year. Being a hammock person I dont see too much about hammock camping on a thru hike. It nice to know I going in the right direction with my gear. Might need to get a lighter pack but I have a year to decide if I want to go lighter.

If you are worried about being cold in your hammock just get a winter sock for it instead of using 0 degree quilts. I hammock camp in the winter and I use my 20 degree quilts down to 0F. Often it's the wind that makes the hammock cold, plus the winter sock traps a good amount of heat. I just add a torso length z-lite, down socks, and the hammock sock for winter use. Your set up looks good! Looking forward to your adventure.

    • @FrozensAdventures

Don’t be afraid to carry the Neo Air the entire way. Opens up more options to sleep in Shelters, Hostels, and Tarp set ups. Same goes for the S2S Pillow. I got to the point that I used it nightly , including replacing the Pillows if provided. Don’t be afraid to go with the 3/4 underquilt for the maturity of the trail. You can supplement the Neo Air for insulation. As well. I never needed anything less than the 3/4 20* Yeti. I started with the lines attached to the stakes and same set up as you with HG Tarp Sleeve! Great Video.

Outdoor Adventures Two for sure and one more that the padding was survivable, but thin. Not many but when looking at the totality of 170 nights and the importance of sleep especially during a town stay; it was mentally important to me for some reason. But have a few questions.
1.) Are the burrow and incubators the premium of the econ models from HG?
2.) How did you attach your line to your stakes? I know knots pretty well but was curious on how you did yours.
As for the weather, this years weather has been insane. Yesterday was 63. Tonight its supposed to be a about 28. I live about half an hour from Amicalola. Like I said. Insane. Last weekend the trail wasn't so bad around Hawk mountain. But can say south of it there are lots of blow downs.

It is even harder for me to believe that I now sit here watching your video as research for my own AT thru-hike. I am seriously considering the Hammock Gear Burrow and Incubator. Since you mentioned the length of your quilts, I'm assuming you went with custom quilts; did you get any overfill or just standard fill? And was your fill power 850 or 950?

Okay I am impressed by the sheer fact you are bringing a 38liter backpack! How in the world are you managing to carry everything you will need on such a long trip? how many days worth of food are you going to carry on aveage?
I also am very minimalistic and I am on the fence between a 65 liter atmos AG and a 48 liter(or 58liter) osprey Exos... But I am just afraid I wont have enough room for hikes longer than 4 days.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว

It's a 35L and that's main compartment storage only. Most manufacturers total all the other pockets like the outside mesh in their calculations. This is more of a 45 or perhaps even 50L. Everything fits well with 4 days of food.

eric fiorello I’m pretty sure the Smokies allow hikers to tent or hammock in designated areas near a shelter if the shelter is full; they also have a peculiar rule that allows college students on spring break (as opposed to thru-hikers) make reservations for shelters and ‘bump’ others out of full shelters along the AT to get their reserved spot(s); ironically, that’s probably okay with lots of thru-hikers who would prefer to tent or hammock than stay in the shelter anyway

The Darien has a built-in bug net. It is an awesome hammock. Papa Smurf and the fine folks at DH really know how to make a quality product.

Does he plan to let Emergency services know where he is at for not being better prepared. One reason people are billed because they know better and don't care about searchers lives. Ten thumbs down.

Hello, I tried to contact LiteAF but got not response. I checked his website, but he looks sold out on bear bags and other items. Do you know if he is still doing business?

He is losing business. I enjoyed his mailing list but did not even get a confirmation which seems that his website it’s not really working either

I guess I might have to wait until he replenishes the bear bags.

Get real. A 14 ounce backpack has to be junk. Good luck with that.

Check out some backpacking cottage vendors, you will see a lot of great packs that are well within this weight range. They usually use a new material called Dyneema Composite Fabric which makes the pack waterproof, extremely durable and lightweight. It hasn't gone mainstream in retail stores yet.
