@@ShakerHikes very easy to do, if I'm doing it from my end I do not need to start with 00:00 yeah if you do it the first one needs to be 00:00 and then the rest just put the time in and a description and it will truly block out your video so people can click directly on it and as they have her over the bottom if you do it it will give the titles as a hover over the bottom part
Q I think you're doing a great job I love the way you have that all laid out I like the way you have that I used to do that for the scouts in my hiking days I'm a little too old for that now I'm 83 but I enjoy very much listening 2 year program here podcast whatever keep up the good work
Glad you made the trail it's good to see that you had all that laid out that was so nice learned a lot and I wouldn't argue with any of the stuff that you had put on there except I might have carried I would have carried a bigger knife besides the Swiss Army I think it was an excellent job only wish I could do it all over again never really did the whole thing but did so many parts of it but that's for another time happy trails
Thank you, Robert. Your video was very informative. It looks like you were fairly happy with most of your gear decisions. I’ll admit, The first video I saw, you set up a tarp, I had preconceived notions you were going to Bushcraft your way to Katahdin. Every year, I choose a few hikers to follow and I’m glad I found your channel as it was mighty enjoyable. Thanks again!
Following along line of cleaning packs, I had read about someone hanging his pack up in the car wash and hoseing it down. When my family came to visit in ‘05 I did this, you wouldn’t believe the dirt that came out. Alas, so did the waterproofing part of the fabric, ULA pack, It shredded and keeps flaking off whenever I use the pack all these many years later.
Rob I'm so grateful for your effort to film your Appalachian adventure every day! I live in Nebraska and am completely unfamiliar with the terrain that you hiked through but I've been very inspired. I wouldn't be able to until I am able to retire. I hope I'll be in good shape then. Wonderful!
Very interesting choices. I’ve hiked the AT in sections many times. I’ve always liked winter (no bugs) . Yet with winter comes weight. I don’t think I’ve ever carried a pack that only weighs 14lbs 😊. Maybe summer has some advantages. Never used trek poles I was raised real men carried a walking stick. In Ranger shool the instructors all had walking sticks. Anyway congratulations very big accomplishment. What next
Similar issue with wet footbox from the very similar Borah bivy, I believe it would be better If the bivy had a bungee sinch around the neck area to prevent breathing down into the bag.
Congratulations on completing the AT and thank you so much for taking the time to share your gear and thoughts on each piece, including the gear you didn’t use. Nice
I like the idea of a combo quilt/sleeping bag. I'm going to buy a quilt next because I toss and turn so much, but this looks like a good choice as well! Congratulations on a great journey! It was terrific following along!
Hi, I found this method best for cleaning my packs. Using liquid Oxy Clean, half fill up your bath tub with hot water. Submerge your pack fully, agitate it. Using a tooth brush, scrub some Oxy Clean and work into the straps, the bottom, stains, back liner... agitate the pack in the water. Let it soak 30 minutes on one side, flip it over soak 30 minutes. Notice the brown water after soaking. Drain, fill with clean hot, agitate again, maybe repeat depending on color of water. Drain, rise with fresh water. Hang to dry upside down. Pack is like new. DG
I looked back to Q&A #1 to see your food process. Seeing you place the smelly socks on top of your food bag made me laugh. Last week I met a hiker on the Colorado trail who also places her stinky hiking clothes on top of her food bag as deterrent. I used an ursack with opsak on my section hike but I may do a double opsak next time. Thanks
Gear video is quite interesting and informative. I found that many of the items you felt weren't very useful are the same ones that I had already sorted out of my personal hiking equipment.
At 27:33 can you give a Amazon link to the bottle. I looked but I'm sure I missed something. Filter top? Sorry if I was not paying 💯 attention. Watched a second time but still want to make sure I get the right one plus I like the olive color
Thank you for watching the video and for the question! I used the Hydrapak Flux 1.5 liter..... They do have other sizes if you're interested in those. Hopefully this link works for you. I enjoyed your hike Rob! I followed you every step! 😉. I was wondering what was your favorite summit? Beautiful summits when you got closer to the end! I live In Alabama. The Appalachian Mountains come on down to my area of Alabama. I have camped and hiked all around our mountains. But the views up north are somethings else. Would love for you to tell us what was some of the bad parts of the trail. What are your favorite places you stayed overnight? Maybe another Q & A. Welcome back to civilization!
Thank you! I am putting together a final Q&A which should come out in another two or three weeks. I'll be sure to add your questions to the list. Thank you once again for following along, it's appreciated!
Nice gear video , so u really never cooked with a stove ? , the huel powder must of kept up full mostly, just mix a shake and go ! Or did I miss the stove in this video , I hate pants as well , I really like the shorts with tights under them for colder mornings , u used this system when u were in the early colder parts of the trail ? , by the way u look thin , anyway I do want to upgrade to your water filter system, seems like everyone is going to this because of the flow
That's right, I never used a stove, I just ate cold food. I used the long underwear under the shorts pretty much the entire time, even in the colder months. I believe I lost a total of around 13 pounds or so. Thank you once again for watching and following along, it's appreciated!
After each longer hike I’ll spray my hip and shoulder belts with simple green, take it outside, hose it off, and let the sun dry it out. Stinky pads no more!
Great post hike gear review. Sounds like everything pretty much worked ok. Not sure I've got the gonads to sleep next to my food tho. Not a trail question but you mentioned you do woodworking and was curious as to what you make. I do wood turning...segmented bowls, ornaments, lamps...etc.
Shaker, Thanks for the great content and info! I am heading out on the AT on the 8th of March 2022 and am trying to determine whether or not to just use opsak odor proof bags or my bear hang kit? I noticed you mentioned sending your kit home, how did you manage your food storage at night? Sleep with it, store it in your vestibule? I hiked the PCT in 21 and never hung a bag, if you found a solution to this for the AT I would be interested in hearing about it. I too just used wraps on my thru of the PCT and found it so much easier to pack out and feed myself at the end of each day. Thanks! EZ
Awesome, I hope you have a great time! That's the same date I started my AT thru hike! I just used an OpSak and kept my food in my vestibule. Typically I didn't eat at my campsite either, I usually ate a ways before getting there. If interested I did go into a little bit of detail about my food storage in my first Q&A video (not the post trail Q&A but one I did while on trail).. if you watch it it's towards the very end of the video.
