Oh god. That “plateau” joke didn’t click for me until the second time you said it, but as soon as it hit, the laughter just immediately bubbled right up out to me... and the funny thing is, I’m honestly not even sure if I was laughing more at the joke or myself.

Keep up the great work. A colleague and I discussed humor for three hours. It was an intense conversation.

Absolutely agree. I've studied comedy independently and when you look for what all comedy has in common its nasty it's nice, it's silly, its vile. All of it illicits an emotion. And fundamentally all jokes have to have things in common and have a common ground. Like food, theres lots of different ways you make it but at a base level it has to have common ground with other foods. The common ground with food is that it's not toxic and able for digestion and that's what jokes are. They are digestible and how do you do that? Through laughter. Laughter is the safety valve for joyful nervousness, the same way crying is for sadness and violence and rage is for anger. If you want to be a comedian find clever ways of surprising people and making people nervous.

Incongruity theory would explain humor in morally wrong jokes, as well. Laughter, i would suggest, helps us learn/make sense of incongruous observations. I think all these theories are merely describing social context of when laughter occurs. All are accurate. We need a broader theory, and i suggest it is form of primitive dispositional communication having a simple set of purposes: expressing or acknowledging superiority, dealing with tension, or processing senselessness. As a form of communication they are on the opposite end of the spectrum from crying.

The main problem with superiority theory is that although superiority may contribute to humor it's not sufficient, similar to the objection you raised for release theory. There's nothing funny about me saying you're a great philosopher, keep up these videos!

All existing theory of humer has non essintial statements .that reflects metaphysical reflection i.e that can be observed in act of it
