What happened to unity? The logic that countries should exist based on one language sounds very backwards to me and it isn't very inclusive at all. Take a country like India, for example. Compared to India Canada only has a fraction of the population but yet India has around 1000 languages and around 30 regional languages. Some languages like Tamil and telugu are completely different from the official languages: hindi and English. And despite this the country can exist together because they have a sense of unity. Your reason as to why Quebec should leave Canada doesn't make sense at all

I live in Nova Scotia and over here and in New Brunswick there are significant French speaking populations to the point that it is an official language in NB in addition to English. What's more interesting is that the dialect of Acadian French spoken in NS is vastly different to that spoken in Quebec. If people like him preach division based on language, then surely Acadia would be a separate country. While we're at it let's divide the significant Punjabi, Mandarin and Arabic speaking areas of Canada too. Here in NS Arabic is the third most spoken language after English and French. It's all too bizarre.

As someone from Pakistan, I heavily disagree with the sentiment that countries with multiple languages should not exist. I'm sure my southern neighbors of India can definitely also agree (though as I understand it, they lack even a Lingua Franca down there).
I believe having a Lingua Franca is important, in Pakistan, the majority of people, 60%, have their mother tongue as Punjabi. Another high percent, something like 30%, is some language of the Sindh province, and we even have our own essentially Quebec like people in the sense that they don't like the Lingua Francas and speak their Pushto language instead. Despite all this variance, Urdu and English are our two Lingua Francas, funnily enough barely anyone knows these two as their mother tongue, but 95% of people can speak Urdu (mostly fluently but there is a joke that the Pushto people can't speak it right and that Punjabi people all sound like from villages) and English I believe is somewhere around 60%? Not sure on all of these stats but they give you an idea.
Point is, having multiple languages can definitely give your country an identity assuming that that is not the sole reason. If Canada didn't have Quebec, I would not understand it being its own country. I still think it is culturally similar to America to the point where it's two countries of the same type of people (which isn't especially rare) as Canada doesn't really have a real reason of existence anymore. And I think that that matters more than language.

There is a bit of hipocracy displayed in the video regarding language. The US doesn't have a national language, and a significant portion, 40%ish?, speak Spanish, another portion speaks various forms of Chinese, another speaks French, and the other most spoken languages include Tagalog, Vietnamese, Korean, German, Arabic, and Russian (as of July of 2019). I, personally, believe that countries should be made up of those who share a political and/or militaristic reason to 'unite', and even then, a proper confederation would be better due to better local representation.

I'm not saying anything about whether or not it's easy to get by without English, as it's definitively the most widely spoken language in the US, but I know for a fact that there are people that live in the US who can't. The southernmost counties in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas have a particularly high Spanish only speaking population, so does that mean that they're all stuck in some kind of massive slum? No, not necessarily. In fact, the majority of services and products in the states that border mexico, and some further north as well, have Spanish translations 'on the tin', as it were.

The English speaking side of Canada was essentially founded by United Empire loyalist exiles (Americans who supported Britain during the American Revolution and got exiled after, the UK resettled many of them in Canada). Add in about one and a quarter centuries of the US being an existential threat (Manifest Destiny was fundamentally incompatible with Canada's existence) and you get a country with anti-Americanism hard-baked deep, no matter how good the current relationship.
In short, we've always been kind of annoying to Americans but it's just been easier to notice due to modern communication technologies. Ironically, the one region of Canada that doesn't have centuries of anti-Americanism hard-baked is Quebec (where US entrepreneurial spirit is pretty widely admired, although in recent years Quebec's far more progressive political scene means they view American politics much like European countries do).

@@andycockrum1212 Why not? We have an abundance of water and clean energy, two resources that will be more and more invaluable in the long term.
We also have a very diversified economy, which makes it more stable, and Montreal is a world hub for everything tech, AI, animation, video games, etc. I believe being an independent country would open many new avenues for tourism as well since we will be able to represent ourselves on the world stage and "have and control our own image" internationally.
We also have the Saint-Laurent seaway and the soon to be Northwest passage which will be huge in the near future.

California has higher voter turnout of blue than norm because it has 2 blues going head to head, so you as a blue will vote for the better blue of the two blues. basically the currently election system the popular vote will favor the blue party because turnout rate not because of belief of the people. i.e. red cali's don't vote.

As for the income disparity between the US and Canada, Canada has a higher median income than the US but a lower mean income. Joe Average Canadian earns more but the country has less income disparity skewing the mean upwards. Being rich in the US is a better deal. Being poor or middle class in Canada is generally better.

I get his point about one language, but having the same language doesn't imply you have the same world view.
That is false and is what is known as Identity politics.
Having standardisation is good for a nation in many ways, and humanity as a whole, as it improves interaction and encourages growth. But I don't see how it's helpful to achieve that in the language department by cutting countries up along existing language lines. Why not simply enforce one universal language for the entire country as its Official language, or it's Language of Governance and Trade within national boundaries. Any other notable languages would be kept as recognized languages of local importance.
This guy on the podcast falls prey to the same mindset as so many, they look at future political boundries in very simplistic terms; i.e If the United States broke up, they would only break up along current state lines, no new states would form, no land would be exchanged.
Also, the idea that a country is doomed because it has multiple languages is wrong. For one, what evidence is there Canada will break up as a result of the dual languages? All over the world you have countries will many languages. If you can prove having more than one language will directly lead to the nation falling apart, as opposed to it doing so "Naturally" as just about every nation historically has, then great.
The modern age is interesting, because it allows for entities and practices to exist, which without our current level of technology and organization would not be possible.
We can keep animals and humans alive, long past what we could in the past. And in many cases, we can reintroduce them to the wild, or society.
Canada is itself an example of a Nation which geographically speaking, shouldn't exist. Nations naturally rise and fall along natural boundaries and how big they get is also limited by what they have, and where they are. Languages change over time, and politics allowed for a sort of invisible border which people focus travel and trade, and this is what creates langauges and cultures only found in certain places. A bunch of unrelated people mix together until the dust settles into a relatively coherent identity, which isn't actually as universal as we'd like to think.
Without the modern age, Canada wouldn't exist. And I would say the same for the USA, if not for Trains, Europeans couldn't have colonized North America from Coast to Coast, and without industrialization our current population in the millions for most countries, would be impossible.
The US is sorta comparable to Empires throughout history, but they were always fragile due to limits in theirn technology, if the US regressed in technology it too, would be unable to keep together.
And if not for the death of the Native peoples, clearing out most of the available land, the US would not exist (Canada is its own thing, but its basically identical to the US and only cane about as a result of the US so they are in the same boat. The US doesn't make sense geographically either, for different reasons, It can defend itself, but its size and power compared to itself neighbors is unbalanced and due to its resources and location, it can overwhelm all other countries in the Americas. This says nothing complimentary to the US, any system with the same access would have similar success and ability. North And South America should be more similar to the EU, but not exactly. It's still a more equal area for the different countries.
