Having read numerous comments here, I think I finally understand why I cry when I peel onions. The next time I peel onions I will do it under running water while wearing glasses, with a candle burning, a chunk of bread in my mouth along with a gulp of water, a matchstick sticking out from somewhere, and a dish of water along with a glass of water and a wet paper towel nearby; I'll rub a metal spoon on my hands then stick it in my mouth, and I'll make sure they were stored in the fridge before hand. After all these years, I think I've got it!
Yes, this definitely works and also keeping the cutting board wet as well. Sometimes I will place the cutting board in the sink and let the tap trickle on it while cutting onions and never have any tears and burning eyes.
