1st CLASS TRAIN RIDE from Edinburgh to London and back | Is it worth the money? | LNER AZUMA

  • Today we are boarding the LNER Azuma train from Edinburgh to London King's Cross and back to show you what the journey is like, what complimentary treats you get and also discussing if it's worth the money!
    Personally I still think this is the best way of travelling down to London - but as we are all starting to feel a bit more safe virus-wise, perhaps economy class would do just as fine!
    Have you ever travelled to London from Edinburgh? What mode of transportation did you choose, and how happy were you with it?

    I've been travelling between Kings Cross and Newcastle for the last 35 years, mostly in First, and the service continues decline year by year. LNER have latterly forgotton what a meal service is. We used to have a restaurant - now it is bowl food. I used to have to refuse a drinks refill - now, it's rationed. If you comment on the service, you will be told that it is not part of the ticket price, but a complimentary service! And sadly, whilst the Lumos competition can be quicker, it is a pack-them-in-tight service with even less luggage space, which seems the opposite of what we need for longer distance journeys.

    • @RushfanUK
      @RushfanUK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But you had to pay extra, even when GNER ran the service if you wanted to eat you had to pay and there was no free alcohol until East Coast took over the service, less people used first class as well even when the rest of the train was rammed with passengers, 47 years of bashing around on the ECML.

    • @afinecity1830
      @afinecity1830 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RushfanUK not sure if you're saying it's reasonable for Lner to say you're not entitled to the food? Most of us would pay first class prices and think we are.

    • @afinecity1830
      @afinecity1830 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is a good summary. East Coast was the best. Now it's poor unless you get the full English breakfast service.

    • @Ben-xe8ps
      @Ben-xe8ps 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Personally I would prefer the old 'nothing included' 1st class product rather than the cheap muck that is provided as a 'complimentary' service. I remember the restaurant cars (and the Pullmans) where you could have a silver service meal at a properly laid table with real table linen, china and glasses served by properly trained silver service stewards who served the food from the trays they carried and never dropped any of it while serving it onto your plate. I remember on the morning and evening business trains those restaurant cars were FULL. Or you could go to the well stocked buffet car and buy what you wanted. i remember leaving Edinburgh and a steward passing through the 1st class coaches offering paid for filter coffee with individual coffee filters and real china cups and saucers.
      I'm not sure why these days railway companies believe that it is necessary to include some cheap muck in the cost of the ticket just because it is 1st class. Since when has a bacon butty been considered acceptable as a 1st class breakfast or a pre-packed chicken sandwich been considered acceptable as a 1st class lunch?

    • @Fishfingers232
      @Fishfingers232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They made a lot of noise over 're-introducing' hot breakfasts in first class, and didn't mention that only a handful of services every day would have it, with none on the weekend. They'll just throw a sandwich at you for the rest.

    A very balanced report however the East Coast catering has been going downhill for a few years along with the ride quality oi the Azumas, ask a driver when you get off. Best tip for any long distance run in the UK is to get a railcard. It will pay for itself after the first trip and they are usually valid for 3 years. In London, go to the Travel Centre in Kings Cross/St Pancras and ask the ladies there for the cheapest deal for you in London, they are brilliant and know all the bargains for bus and tube.

    I often travel from Aberdeen to Leuchars first class on the Azuma LNER train. Standard class is £8 and first class £13 sometimes, for the 1hour 10min journey. It is worth paying the extra ticket price for the complimentary food and drink. The main courses are tasty but very small portions. I travelled once were bacon roll was the only item available, but my recent evening trip all food items were available. Staff are always polite and helpful. Never known the train to be late.

    I used to get very cheap last minute first class tickets (2013-15), it was epic, especially York to Brighton, but navigating the underground after the free wine was .... interesting...
    Also, get a railcard, and do split ticketing, you save soo much money!
    Also, I was on a super tight budget to go to Lille once and got the coach... never again. Train/plane every time, but it was certainly an experience!

    Hello. You make some good points but not everyone lives or works in city centres and that's one advantage of air ... especially if you drive and park at the airport. London is so spread out and many travellers find their local airport more convenient than a downtown train station. Just look at how many London airports offer flights to Edinburgh. And it's the same in Scotland. Many travellers reside in Fife. So do you drive to Edinburgh airport (or take a bus/taxi) or do you take the train to Waverly and then take a bus/tram back to the airport ?

  • @pizzawarlord9232

    Loved the review. Sad state of first class being out of so many menu items as well as lack of service during final leg.
    I am not demanding and normally pass on most food and drink in short trips but nice to be asked and to get some tea
    Laughed at weird person if large bag. I travel to and around Europe and when I do tend to take 3 to 4 weeks to make it worth it. That means a giant piece of luggage and a small backpack. Normally not an issues since I check bag on a plane or rent a medium to large car.
    Can be an issue on some buses which is why I stopped taking them and get a car or hire a driver. Seems silly a large train does not accommodate travelers with large bags

    Hi, I love the video; very informative, but I hope you don't mind if I point out one thing that frustrates me a bit; not just with your video, but from other train vloggers like "Dylan's Travels" or Paul Lucas' "Wingin It"... Please remember that the term "pricy" is actually a relative term. What might seem pricy to people who actually live in Britain, might actually be quite inexpensive, or even cheap to people in other countries. You said that the price for First Class on LNER was about 95£ ($117.09) one way from Edinburgh Waverly to London. A closely equivalent distance would be a train ride from Boston, MA. to Washington DC. This price on Amtrak would be anywhere from 229.73£ ($283) to 280.87£ ($346) one way for first class. Double that if you want a return ticket., so considering the fact that all in all; depending on if or when the service might return to "pre-pandemic" quality, and my husband's and my health issues; would I personally as an American pay that price you stated? Yes in a heartbeat!

    UK trains are overpriced because all the contracts are leased out to private parties, often funny enough to national state owned railway companies of other European countries. The Dutch national railway company NS operates no less than 7 UK companies, and many more by the French and German equivalent. Just booked a train ticket from Amsterdam to Heidelberg in Germany about 2 weeks ahead and it only costs me 35 euro, so about 30 Pound. Its roughly the same distance as Edinburgh-London. The main part of the journey is with the fancy German ICE high speed train even. I've read that the UK is looking at getting these contracts back and have the state operate them again. Hopefully that will make the prices more reasonable.

    It's about time LNER stopped calling it 'First Class' because the service is most definitely NOT. They should instead call it a Premium Fare ticket with 'Complimentary Service'. I'm a frequent business traveller on the East Coast Main Line between Edinburgh and London. At one point Virgin East Coast ran a decent first-class service which almost justified the higher ticket price, but things went into rapid decline around 2016-2017. IMO, LNER has not improved anything except the general cleanliness of the trains following the pandemic. I just travel standard class now and I buy my food to take with me on the journey.

    • @Clivestravelandtrains
      @Clivestravelandtrains 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the UK you can always buy what they now call a "walk-on" ticket, but they are usually (but not always) dearer than advance tickets. If the advance tickets are all sold, you can still buy a "walk-on" ticket. Users of Interrail tickets can board any train, but a seat isn't guaranteed unless you make a seat reservation at the ticket office beforehand. The train operating companies are obliged to keep a certain percentage of seats for "walk-on" passengers. In Avanti West Coast this is usually Coach C, for example. The Lumo service is new and I don't know if they allow "walk-ons" as they have a different type of train operating contract.

      @@afinecity1830 If you buy an open return ticket you don't "have to" book in advance. Quite often I buy an open return - return half valid one month - if I don't know exactly when I'll be coming back.
      The other advantage of an open return is that you can break your journey en-route, which I sometimes do.
      I regularly travel between Glasgow and York, and sometimes when I decide to do that journey all the advance tickets are gone. The train companies seem to live in a fantasy world where everyone can plan all their moves weeks in advance.

    Enjoyed this greatly but although rail in the UK is generally very acceptable they do it so much better on the Continent where in addition to Standard (C'mon it is really 3rd) you have other options which we no longer have here. I want the convenience of rail - city centre to city centre, the ability to carry luggage of rail (when will they have great space for big bags?) but have the comfort and service of airlines? I can do a basic level 3 hr air trip and get a decent meal and drinks but a first class rail meal does not compare. The problem is that a large proportion of First Class passengers are travelling on the firm - essentially for free and will accept the present poor standards of food and drink without complaint. Space and weight restrictions on rail are worlds away from those on airlines but you can still get decent food and rink on a transatlantic airbus so why not on an Edinburgh - London express? Last moan - why do they manage to serve the tea or coffee hot but not the beer cold?

      I can only agree with all of your points - and yes, it often feels like people who pay for 1st class as a treat or a special occasion are kinda left behind, because the rest is just business travellers who barely pay attention to the details anymore.
