Jonghyun's "Shinin'" is particularly special because it was the last MV that he ever did and it was released a few month after he died. If you pay attention to the lyrics, you might notice that, as may people have speculated, that he intended this to be his farewell song and it was meant to let everyone know how much he cared about them and loved them. But Jonghyun has more than 10 years worth of songs both as a member of SHINee and his solo work to check out. He debuted in 2015 as a solo artist and he has at least 4 solo albums that are all self-wrote and composed or co-composed by him. Jonghyun was one of the very first Idols to be known for his songwriting and composing skills and he was the first to have a fully self-wrote album. He was a master when it comes to songwriting and composing. He was highly respected by everyone in the music industry in all aspects of music. This MV and album was supposed to be a continuation of the retro theme leading from SHINee's retro 1 of 1 album, which came out right before Jonghyun's solo album was set to drop. However, he died right before the album and this MV was set to be released. So this was his final gift to fans. If you pay attention to the lyrics, many think this final release was planned by Jonghyun as his final goodbye. As he says over and over again in the song, "I will always be with you ..." You see him in this MV as a radio DJ because most believe this was a nod to his time as a host and a DJ of "Blue Night," which was a daily radio program he hosted for 3 years. He actually decided to quit doing the radio program in part because he was heading into a very busy schedule with this solo comeback, a solo concert tour and plans for SHINee's 10th anniversary, etc. Jonghyun loved hosting his radio program and he was really sad to have to give it up. He had one of the most popular late night radio shows at the time. He was such a great DJ and host. If you ever want to see him on his show, all you have to do is search TH-cam for "Jonghyun Blue Night" radio. There are clips and even whole episodes of the program you can watch. He had the perfect voice and personality to be a radio DJ and host. My favorite episode was when SHINee came on the show to promote their "Tell Me What To Do" comeback and Jonghyun had to play host and guest at the same time. You did well!!! just his whole she is album is top tier. also the quality of his ballads is unmatched like i never considered myself a fan of ballads until i became a fan of his. his song diphylleia grayi gives me literal chills every time i hear it.
Jonghyun actually played the bass for a funk cover band in high school and was scouted while performing with them. He really brought those funk influences and a lot of more classic and groovy sounds with him into his solo work. He even formed a music writing group called "We Freaky" with two of his friends who were members of this high school band and they have a lot of songwriting credits on his albums. I honestly think he has one of the most flawless discographies in kpop and I couldn't pick a favorite song if I tried. Wow, "She Is" just showcases Jonghyun's amazing artistry and his unique style! About "Shinin'"... I hate to be a downer, but, "Shinin'" was released posthumously, so that chorus still strikes a chord in my heart when I hear those lyrics... But it's refreshing to see a reaction to it without knowing this context, because you were able to enjoy the song as a fun and sweet bop. And that made me see how bubbly the song is otherwise, which made think how, if he were still with us, this song would just be a fun track that everyone would bop along to. :')
From what I remember, She Is MV is about women stereotypes. The cabin is where the men are blind plus women outside dressed all the same because that's how they're supposed to dress. Then those things start to change, Jonghyun gets out of the cabin, then the women's clothes change for their own style and wear whatever they want. Then women and men stand in the same line! Then the cabin is being destroyed, the stereotypes. And at the end, that was just a small portion, but it's starting to happen in other places too. Ugh, our brilliant Jjong! My favourite songs by him are definitely 'She Is', 'Crazy (Guilty Pleasure)', 'Hallelujah', 'Let Me Out', 'Elevator', 'Inspiration', 'Beautiful Tonight' and 'Love Belt'. To be honest, his albums are absolute masterpieces so it's difficult to pick faves as he has songs for every mood.
Jonghyun as a musician is the artist that has resonated with me the most in Kpop. And in general as well, he's up there with gaga tbh. His work is such a gift. according to the MV director, Jonghyun filmed the Shinin' MV on December 15th, a couple of days before his passing (December 18th 2017). He also finished the album photoshoot that day, and he made sure to finish recording his full self-written album Poet | Artist, which was released posthumously. He performed some of its songs on his last concert (December 10th 2017).

His "Collection: Story op.2" (the album with "Lonely" feat. Taeyeon) remains today my all time favourite album across every genre, not only because of the variety he offers musically, but because it's an incredible second part of an original project that saw him writing songs based on stories people told him while working in radio! I find it incredible, to be able to deliver all those different stories and emotions through music when it's not even his own experience, he must have been so empathetic and understanding of other people's feelings to be able to do that, I honestly cannot think of many artists capable of doing so! I think you should do a listen party for his last album, POET|ARTIST. The genres and the vocals change for each song and its really a culmination of his thoughts and feelings. It was released Post humorously along with the Shinin' Video. When you said it makes you happy, I agree it really does. I think over the pain when it first released it helped the fans to try and celebrate and be comforted.

You hit the nail on the head. His taste is so eclectic, from Prince, MJ to Maxwell and Musiq Soulchild to Jamiroquai. He's known to throw in a rap here or there on his songs as well lol. I don't know if anyone has commented this or if you already has noticed it, but Poet | Artist (the album of Shinin') was a posthumous release. it was also the first SHINee related album to receive the platinum certification on gaon. btw... my favourite song of his is 'Diphylleia Grayi', which is also the name of his book (Skeleton Flower). he wrote this song. 'Take The Dive' (from Poet | Artist) is my favourite also.

Shinin will always be so bittersweet to me. I must admit I only listen to it when I am in need of comfort from Jonghyun but I'm so happy you enjoyed it as much as you did. I cannot wait for you to react to live performances from shinee. They are on another level! And as for jiong's albums they are true works of art. He really was a poet.
SHINee and Jonghyun in particular were way ahead of their time. This is why they naturally became the trendsetters in Kpop. They dare to do music styles and compositions that no one else in the industry would touch. Then, when it comes out and is a success, everyone jumps on the bandwagon to replicate it. Jonghyun was a musical genius and probably the best vocalist ever in Kpop. He had incredible range and clarity. His loss left a huge void both in Kpop and our hearts. Those who don't really understand chronic depression rush to blame suicide from such on the company, work pressure, and anti-fans/saesangs. However, even if you took those things away, the chronic depression would still be present. It's an insidious disease that can invade the person's mind regardless of their lifestyle, profession, or the opinions of others. This is precisely why it is so difficult to treat. There is no rhyme or reason to it. Not many realize the lengths SM went through to help Jonghyun and his family deal with this issue he had since childhood, even before becoming an idol. To this day SM is supporting the other four members, Jonghyun's family, and the charity that has sprung from this tragedy. Lastly, you did well, Jonghyun, and we love you and your SHINee hyungs. Always 5HINee.
Ok, you should react to White T-Shirt! It was the b-side for She Is! And it's a masterpiece! I also highly recommend listening to the whole album, it's definitely a gem! Also, I think Shawol definitely considers Shinin' our comfort song. I really needed it when it came out, since it was posthumous. And that whole album Poet Artist is another gem! I think you should react to his solo debut: "Crazy (Guilty Pleasure)". It's so different even for today's standards. He also managed to have BIG names on his features for that album: Zion.T, Younha, etc. It'll probably sound repetitive but all of his albums are amazing, from start to finish.

Even today I can't choose my favorite song from Jonghyun's solo work, I like all his songs and they are so unique and expressive that just hearing them is enough to feel what Jonggie wanted to convey, although it is true that it is a shame that there is no more mv. "She Is" is Jonghyun's title track on his second solo album from 2016. And just like SHINee, nothing he does will be like anything you have heard from him before. Jonghyun was such a magnificent singer/songwriter. His solo albums were all so colorful because it was 100% his voice and style -- he was the one that wrote and composed or co-composed the whole album every time. So his solo songs were where we got to hear his true thoughts and emotions and he could tell his story. He was truly brilliant when it came to music and that was why he was so highly respected by everyone in all aspects of the music industry. I truly believe that if he had had more time in this world, he would have eventually even made it into the U.S. music scene and he might have even wrote songs for western artists. As you know, live performances are what makes SHINee special. There is nothing like a live performance from SHINee. You should really check out a live performance of "She Is," you will be even more impressed when you see and hear him perform live. And SHINee never performs a song the same way twice, so audiences never get tired of seeing or hearing SHINee's songs because every performance is different. That is because they were created to be SM's experimental boy group, so they are always coming up with ways to be new, unique and groundbreaking. SHINee is the group that starts the trend and it's the rest of the industry that follows suit. Yes, when it comes to SHINee, they all can do it all. The rappers can sing and the singers can rap. As trainees the members of SHINee started out training to be a hip-hop group, so they all learned how to rap. That's one of the reasons why they are so versatile.
Favorite songs by jjong? Oh gosh, it's a hard pick because he dived in a lot of genres so he has many amazing songs that are very different from each other. But my top 5 right now are 1. Moon 2. Aurora 3. Before Our Spring 4. Fine 5. Hallelujah But all his albums have so many gems!
Jonghyun definitely has my favorite discography among soloists! So many amazing bsides; they're definitely all worth a listen. Idk what it is about his artistry and music, but they line up so well with my taste in music. My 5 favorite songs from him: 1. Orbit 2. Neon 3. She is 4. Hallelujah 5. Fine Can't wait to see you go through his albums! His music is ridiculously good and I still remember the week I discovered him. In my opinion, he has the most expressive vocals in kpop (especially in Hallelujah). Knowing how personal his songs are to him and how involved he was in the storytelling and production of his music only makes it better.

The She Is album remains my favorite album in all music, of all time, and also happens to feature my favorite Jonghyun song- Suit Up, which is about a couple having their first time on their wedding night. His ability to tell a story in an album and create an atmosphere in each song is just unmatched. Despite not having many MVs, there's soooo much Jonghyun music and it's all worth listening to. Absolutely a musical genius. I'm also very fond of his Hallelujah dance practice video. 🥰 His birthday is very hard for me each year and as much as I want to, I generally can't bring myself to listen to his music then, but a few days later I'll always listen to an album to make up for...I wouldn't call it a moment of weakness, it's just difficult on that day and I always want to remember him fondly and appreciate his art. So I'm glad this reaction came out even if it's a bit later!!

Glad you're finally getting to check these songs out! Regarding the She Is MV... I'm not sure there's a story. I think there was a phase where K-pop MVs were just being hipster and trippy for no reason, and SM was definitely at the forefront of this style (especially with SHINee and f(x) for sure). There's probably careful choosing of elements and visuals for these MVs of course, but I don't believe they're trying to tell you anything overly deep.
I recommend 'End of a Day' - he wrote the song after hearing the fans' stories on his radio show. It's such a heartwarming song! You should look up the lyrics while listening because that's the most important part of the song imo

I don't know if I'm crazy or something... but when I first saw the She's MV, way back in the day, I went like "HE'S MAKING FOOD OUT OF THOSE POOR GIRLS!" lol all those images of ketchup dripping at their clothes and then he's actualy making hamburgers... very suspishious. Also, yellow can make you fell hungry (that's why Mcdonald's is yellow and red), and the whole MV is yellowish. Or maybe he's just the french fries. Probably I'm jus crazy...

Im kinda new to Shinee in general, and I think I realized how special Jonghyuns music really is, once I realized that for his songs I actually fall in love with them after listening with lyrics and seeing him perform it live. His songs have so much personality and a vibe that I at least for me, I cant get just from listening to the song. Like She is for example, I thought it was a fine funky song until I actually saw him perform it live with lyrics, then it actually clicked for me, especially the ''She Is'' play with the sound/pun? I guess. That really brought it to life. I personally cant say that for a lot of Kpop. Im curious about lyrics, maybe im interested in the dance for the live, but I can listen and have fun without it. Jonghyuns songs just always get a new dimension to them with the actual lyrics and his live performances. But like lets not talk about live performance of Moon :D

I started listening to it and I was so glad that it was upbeat and happy...but then we hit the “always be with you” and I may as well have been listening to Before Our Spring. Reading through the comments on here though is such a massive comfort though to know that others went through the same. My favourite song from him is still Crazy (Guilty pleasure) purely because the live performance with him in that red suit lives in my brain rent free 😁

tbvh i have TONS of favorites from his discography because with no exaggeration, he is incredibly good. his songs are very diverse and amazing and sometimes quirky and out of the box and i love it when artists explore with their sounds, concepts and genres like he does. but if im gonna pinpoint a song, for rnb-soul kinda intense influence its definitely crazy (guilty pleasure) which is a title track from his debut album base. i also am obsessed with red, moon and aurora from the she is album, hashtag and sightseeing in the poet | artist album. but for ballads, end of a day is def there and my most treasured song ever diphylleia grayi. there's not much to say other than i resonate so much with the concept lyrics and meaning of dyphylleia grayi that it sets it apart out of everything else that is in his discography ^^

Jjong is still my favourite solo artist in the kpop world ♡ My favourite song is Beautiful Tonight! Honestly I love how he played so much with music and the rhythms, the nuances of his voices, the syncopated parts... his music is really one of a kind and doesn't seem to age too

He was a master when it comes to songwriting and composing. He was highly respected by everyone in the music industry in all aspects of music.
This MV and album was supposed to be a continuation of the retro theme leading from SHINee's retro 1 of 1 album, which came out right before Jonghyun's solo album was set to drop. However, he died right before the album and this MV was set to be released. So this was his final gift to fans. If you pay attention to the lyrics, many think this final release was planned by Jonghyun as his final goodbye. As he says over and over again in the song, "I will always be with you ..."
You see him in this MV as a radio DJ because most believe this was a nod to his time as a host and a DJ of "Blue Night," which was a daily radio program he hosted for 3 years. He actually decided to quit doing the radio program in part because he was heading into a very busy schedule with this solo comeback, a solo concert tour and plans for SHINee's 10th anniversary, etc. Jonghyun loved hosting his radio program and he was really sad to have to give it up. He had one of the most popular late night radio shows at the time. He was such a great DJ and host. If you ever want to see him on his show, all you have to do is search TH-cam for "Jonghyun Blue Night" radio. There are clips and even whole episodes of the program you can watch. He had the perfect voice and personality to be a radio DJ and host. My favorite episode was when SHINee came on the show to promote their "Tell Me What To Do" comeback and Jonghyun had to play host and guest at the same time.

Jonghyun actually played the bass for a funk cover band in high school and was scouted while performing with them. He really brought those funk influences and a lot of more classic and groovy sounds with him into his solo work. He even formed a music writing group called "We Freaky" with two of his friends who were members of this high school band and they have a lot of songwriting credits on his albums. I honestly think he has one of the most flawless discographies in kpop and I couldn't pick a favorite song if I tried. But it's refreshing to see a reaction to it without knowing this context, because you were able to enjoy the song as a fun and sweet bop. And that made me see how bubbly the song is otherwise, which made think how, if he were still with us, this song would just be a fun track that everyone would bop along to. :')

From what I remember, She Is MV is about women stereotypes. The cabin is where the men are blind plus women outside dressed all the same because that's how they're supposed to dress. Then those things start to change, Jonghyun gets out of the cabin, then the women's clothes change for their own style and wear whatever they want. Then women and men stand in the same line! Then the cabin is being destroyed, the stereotypes. And at the end, that was just a small portion, but it's starting to happen in other places too. My favourite jonghyun songs are "End of a day" and "Diphylleia Grayi" (skeleton flower). The second one is also my favourite kpop song ever.
according to the MV director, Jonghyun filmed the Shinin' MV on December 15th, a couple of days before his passing (December 18th 2017).
He also finished the album photoshoot that day, and he made sure to finish recording his full self-written album Poet | Artist, which was released posthumously. He performed some of its songs on his last concert (December 10th 2017).

Taeyeon) remains today my all time favourite album across every genre, not only because of the variety he offers musically, but because it's an incredible second part of an original project that saw him writing songs based on stories people told him while working in radio! I find it incredible, to be able to deliver all those different stories and emotions through music when it's not even his own experience, he must have been so empathetic and understanding of other people's feelings to be able to do that, I honestly cannot think of many artists capable of doing so! You hit the nail on the head. His taste is so eclectic, from Prince, MJ to Maxwell and Musiq Soulchild to Jamiroquai. He's known to throw in a rap here or there on his songs as well lol. Jonghyun was just super wellroudned to me from his style to his vocals. My favourite song is probably Deja Boo. It's so funky and jazzy and it just really speaks to his core style even though he plays around wih genres a lot, he always comes back to this jazzy, funky vibe.
Please check out ALL of his albums. His main releases as well as Story Op1 & 2. Story Op2 is a very introspective album. I call it my winter album because it's like a chai latte on a cold winter's morning. I love that album to bits. In fact I love all of his albums. A true artist.

I don't know if anyone has commented this or if you already has noticed it, but Poet | Artist (the album of Shinin') was a posthumous release. it was also the first SHINee related album to receive the platinum certification on gaon.
btw... my favourite song of his is 'Diphylleia Grayi', which is also the name of his book (Skeleton Flower). he wrote this song. 'Take The Dive' (from Poet | Artist) is my favourite also.

SHINee and Jonghyun in particular were way ahead of their time. This is why they naturally became the trendsetters in Kpop. They dare to do music styles and compositions that no one else in the industry would touch. Then, when it comes out and is a success, everyone jumps on the bandwagon to replicate it.
Jonghyun was a musical genius and probably the best vocalist ever in Kpop. He had incredible range and clarity. His loss left a huge void both in Kpop and our hearts.
Those who don't really understand chronic depression rush to blame suicide from such on the company, work pressure, and anti-fans/saesangs. However, even if you took those things away, the chronic depression would still be present. It's an insidious disease that can invade the person's mind regardless of their lifestyle, profession, or the opinions of others. This is precisely why it is so difficult to treat. There is no rhyme or reason to it. Not many realize the lengths SM went through to help Jonghyun and his family deal with this issue he had since childhood, even before becoming an idol. To this day SM is supporting the other four members, Jonghyun's family, and the charity that has sprung from this tragedy.
Lastly, you did well, Jonghyun, and we love you and your SHINee hyungs. Always 5HINee.
Ok, you should react to White T-Shirt! It was the b-side for She Is! And it's a masterpiece! I also highly recommend listening to the whole album, it's definitely a gem! Also, I think Shawol definitely considers Shinin' our comfort song. I really needed it when it came out, since it was posthumous. And that whole album Poet Artist is another gem! I think you should react to his solo debut: "Crazy (Guilty Pleasure)". It's so different even for today's standards. He also managed to have BIG names on his features for that album: Zion.T, Younha, etc. It'll probably sound repetitive but all of his albums are amazing, from start to finish.

Thank you for sharing your reactions to Jonghyun's art. In addition to his solo work I love what he wrote for SHINee, including Odd Eye which captures all of their voices. He was great at that. Selene 6.23, written for International Shawols, and his ballads are beautiful.
Even today I can't choose my favorite song from Jonghyun's solo work, I like all his songs and they are so unique and expressive that just hearing them is enough to feel what Jonggie wanted to convey, although it is true that it is a shame that there is no more mv. It would be great if you reacted to his solo work, I'm sure you will be surprised as it is unique and masterpieces and literal pure art.

Jonghyun was such a magnificent singer/songwriter. His solo albums were all so colorful because it was 100% his voice and style -- he was the one that wrote and composed or co-composed the whole album every time. So his solo songs were where we got to hear his true thoughts and emotions and he could tell his story. He was truly brilliant when it came to music and that was why he was so highly respected by everyone in all aspects of the music industry. I truly believe that if he had had more time in this world, he would have eventually even made it into the U.S. music scene and he might have even wrote songs for western artists.
As you know, live performances are what makes SHINee special. There is nothing like a live performance from SHINee. You should really check out a live performance of "She Is," you will be even more impressed when you see and hear him perform live. And SHINee never performs a song the same way twice, so audiences never get tired of seeing or hearing SHINee's songs because every performance is different. That is because they were created to be SM's experimental boy group, so they are always coming up with ways to be new, unique and groundbreaking. SHINee is the group that starts the trend and it's the rest of the industry that follows suit.
Yes, when it comes to SHINee, they all can do it all. The rappers can sing and the singers can rap. As trainees the members of SHINee started out training to be a hip-hop group, so they all learned how to rap. That's one of the reasons why they are so versatile.

The She Is album remains my favorite album in all music, of all time, and also happens to feature my favorite Jonghyun song- Suit Up, which is about a couple having their first time on their wedding night. His ability to tell a story in an album and create an atmosphere in each song is just unmatched. Despite not having many MVs, there's soooo much Jonghyun music and it's all worth listening to. Absolutely a musical genius. I'm also very fond of his Hallelujah dance practice video. 🥰
His birthday is very hard for me each year and as much as I want to, I generally can't bring myself to listen to his music then, but a few days later I'll always listen to an album to make up for...I wouldn't call it a moment of weakness, it's just difficult on that day and I always want to remember him fondly and appreciate his art. My favorite from Jonghyun that I hope you check too are Y Si Fuera Ella (live stage) and End of a Day (make sure to check the one with eng subs) - this is a very comforting song written by Jonghyun. Others are Deja Boo and Crazy live stages. The ones from Music Bank have eng subs as well.

Glad you're finally getting to check these songs out! Regarding the She Is MV... I'm not sure there's a story. I think there was a phase where K-pop MVs were just being hipster and trippy for no reason, and SM was definitely at the forefront of this style (especially with SHINee and f(x) for sure). There's probably careful choosing of elements and visuals for these MVs of course, but I don't believe they're trying to tell you anything overly deep.

I don't know if I'm crazy or something... but when I first saw the She's MV, way back in the day, I went like "HE'S MAKING FOOD OUT OF THOSE POOR GIRLS!" lol all those images of ketchup dripping at their clothes and then he's actualy making hamburgers... very suspishious. Also, yellow can make you fell hungry (that's why Mcdonald's is yellow and red), and the whole MV is yellowish.

Im kinda new to Shinee in general, and I think I realized how special Jonghyuns music really is, once I realized that for his songs I actually fall in love with them after listening with lyrics and seeing him perform it live. His songs have so much personality and a vibe that I at least for me, I cant get just from listening to the song. Like She is for example, I thought it was a fine funky song until I actually saw him perform it live with lyrics, then it actually clicked for me, especially the ''She Is'' play with the sound/pun? I guess. That really brought it to life.
I personally cant say that for a lot of Kpop. Im curious about lyrics, maybe im interested in the dance for the live, but I can listen and have fun without it. Jonghyuns songs just always get a new dimension to them with the actual lyrics and his live performances.

tbvh i have TONS of favorites from his discography because with no exaggeration, he is incredibly good. his songs are very diverse and amazing and sometimes quirky and out of the box and i love it when artists explore with their sounds, concepts and genres like he does. but if im gonna pinpoint a song, for rnb-soul kinda intense influence its definitely crazy (guilty pleasure) which is a title track from his debut album base. i also am obsessed with red, moon and aurora from the she is album, hashtag and sightseeing in the poet | artist album. but for ballads, end of a day is def there and my most treasured song ever diphylleia grayi. there's not much to say other than i resonate so much with the concept lyrics and meaning of dyphylleia grayi that it sets it apart out of everything else that is in his discography ^^
