I am a huge a.m.c fan and now I learned by watching this show that Hudson hornet was the begining for AMC I really love the story I own 7 a.m.c products today and they are the best otomobil ever built in my opinion...

No they don’t there are too many rules now back then you could buy a car and race it can’t do that now
@@What.its.like. In some kinds of racing, you can. You just have to modify it to meet certain safety requirements. ChrisFix bought a 2004 BMW to race in the 24 Hours Of Lemons.
The Swan Song of the American Valve In Block engine configuration. Kentucky moonshiners loved this car because it easily outran the cops with it's engine torque and it's low center of gravity handling advantages in the mountain road that curved a lot. Those moonshiners became the backbone of NASCAR.
Awesome statement I forgot to mention the 308 is bigger displacement than the legendary 5.0 V8 Ford made in the 80s.. and made more power as well that engine was only rated at 150 hp
This here is TRUE NASCAR racing! A lot of these guys drove their cars to the race, set them up themselves and drove them back home at the end of the day.....

NO! That was AAA stock car racing. After 1955 AAA decided to quit racing and USAC was created to take over their events.

Great episode, Jay! I LOVED the Stock Car Race newsreel. One of my dream cars is a maroon 51 Commodore Six sedan with Hydramatic and dealer installed Twin H Power.
Glad you dig this one it’s been a long time coming wasn’t sure how to approach it.. it was confusing at first with the narrow block wide block concept..

Great video. I liked the vintage racing clip. In the 70's I worked at a Goodyear dealer which used to be a Hudson dealer. One of the mechanics I worked with used to work at the dealer. But oddly when I was growing up in the 60's I don't recall seeing many Hudsons around town. WYR I would take the 1953 Hornet in the first and the 1953 Wasp. I like the hood on the 53's.

Love the race clip you added. I like the comment from the announcer after the the driver wrecked his car - "Tough luck for Jack he just bought it a few weeks ago"! Hudson dominated the early years of Nascar, and is too bad to see the decline of the sport and it's popularity. Hudson and Tuckers in my opinion were game changer cars in the auto industry. I would like to see a video on Smokey Yunick. He was an innovator and was integral part of motorsports. Especially drag racing. Enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday!🦃

I agree that NASCAR is not what it use to be and is really suffering a decline. I can not say what would be needed to bring it back but all it is right now is advertising. Its a lot more like American football now, nothing but commercials and over paid athletes. I use to watch pro football but now I watch college ball, more fun and does not (usually) have two hours of commercials for one hour of play. I hope that somebody starts televising short track racing.

Great video! I have a 1951 Hudson Commodore Six with the 262 engine. These were excellent automobiles and engines.

@@gregdelagrange8573 When I was in high school, late 60's, I saw one like that abandoned behind a convenience store. It was in very good, all original condition, but nobody wanted it. I still remember the woven leather buttons on the seats.

Smokey Yunick was definitely a colorful character! I love reading the stories about he would bend the rules, without really cheating outright. I love the Hudsons, there are a couple near me for sale, but they are 4 door cars, rough, and incomplete. There was a few nice Hudsons in Burley Idaho 25 years ago, and the prices were fair, but I didn't strike, im regretting it now. Im sure the old guy that had them is gone now.

Once when I was a young married man, I went to a nearby grocery store. I saw an old car in the parking lot, so I parked near it to see what it was. The car was a Hornet with Twin-H induction. The car looked rather rough at first. The blue paint was faded and missing in a few places, but the sheet metal was straight. I did not see any serious rust on the car. The interior showed its age, but it was not ragged at all. This happened in the late 1970s, so the car would have been around 25-30 years old at that time. That was the only time I ever saw an original, first-generation Hornet in the wild. (I loved the movie after your video.)

Good research. Solid historical accuracy on Hudson engineering. 1954 was the best performing most advanced stepdown and In racing configuration a hot car in its era. You might not like the styling but it was the best 6 cylinder performance car they ever produced before the AMC merger. I would want a 1954 Hornet club coupe with a 7X engine package.

Interesting that these carried a higher power rating than the Oldsmobile V8 although the displacement was about the same and the Olds had the more modern overhead valve and perhaps more importantly a shorter stroke configuration.
I guess at a certain point these,Oldsmobile,and Chrysler powered cars were mixing it up on the tracks.

A friend that owned a engine machine shop some forty years ago said that when porting the 308 engine for marine competition, you needed to remove the guides & keep grinding till a billiard ball would roll through it before installing new guides. Was he pulling my leg? I don't know, but that shop produced a couple of VERY serious Hudson 308's

Hudson made some tremendous 6 cylinder engines the amount of horsepower and torque they were able to coax out of those almost unheard of for that era.
How ironic that the step-down design which Hudson touted so heavily and which enabled them to have that low center of gravity and handling was also the same thing that led to their downfall.
As mentioned they just could not come up with a quick fast way to retool and change body styles as quickly as all the other manufacturers were.

The 262 version was used in 1952 Wasp and Commodore and I think 1953 Super Wasp.

You forgot about the 1948 to 1951 Super that used the 262. Plus in 53, the Pacemaker and Wasp kinda had name shuffle essentially the Pacemaker as rechristened as the Wasp and the Wasp became the Super Wasp. My guess it was for brand cohesion with the Hornet.

Always wondered what the 308 could do with one, maybe 2 modern 4-barrels and a vacuum linkage. Oh, and a 5-speed trans.
Me two I have a friend who is building a 54 7x I asked him about oil filtration because they don’t have filters on the block was wondering if anyone put a filter on the pan idk

Looks like in those days it was a shootout between the Hudson Hornet and the Oldsmobile Rocket V8...I imagine the Chevy 216 I6 just didn't have what it took to be competitive, nor the by-then outdated Ford flathead V8....
The Ford flathead V-8 is sort of overrated in my opinion after getting to drive a couple of them they’re very eh There are other power plants from the day they have less cylinders that are more impressive
Yes, I agree..they probably were impressive in the small light '32-'36 Fords, after having only 4 cylinders previously, but they were very small displacement, even the largest ones, and inefficient designs. I guess a lot of people probably like the racket they make....I think several inline sixes of the era probably out performed them. Not sure what power plants had glass cylinders, little confused by that...@@What.its.like.

Hi Jay!: Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for another great engine episode, and with some early NASCAR footage too! I wonder if GM got the idea for the multi-carb engine for the first Corvettes from the Twin H power Hudsons? Seems to me Hudson was a pioneer of multiple carbs on an engine in the U.S. In any event Hudson pretty much owned the early years of stock car racing! WYR#1 1952 Hornet. #2 1953 Wasp (nice example in the pic!)

I think Buick had twin carburetors on some of their Eights back in the 1930's.
Just wondering. What if a company started to remake these old engines but built them with today's materials and put a PCV and a throttle body on in place of a carb. Wonder how they would sell and pass the "sniff" test.
I would love to see them bring back the flathead and turbo charge it

1952 saw the end of the Pacemaker. Mid year the Wasp replaced the Pacemaker. Wasp was not made in 1951. I had a friend that worked with Smokey, sadly he passed away. I will stick with the Pacemaker since I own a 1951.

one of the best cheating Smokey stories is of smokey obtaining unmachined engine blocks so he could move the bores to where he wanted them to simulate the effect of offset wrist pins(which was forbidden) factoid provided by no less of an authority than Gale Banks.
Awesome story I hear that he changed the drive train to sit opposite side the car leaned in turns to keep it on the road better in the turn also basketball in fuel tank.. I also heard of 2 inch think gas line haha he was a character

Smokey, YEAH he did so many things and he was not a NASCAR regular after the late 1950's. Usually he was doing things that others were doing but he was making them work. When NASCAR wanted to stop something they would usually make Smokey their example and go easier on the teams that ran the whole series. The inflatable balls in the fuel tanks was a good example. NASCAR officials turned a blind eye to this for a long time. Finally they announced they were going to enforce the rule and inspect fuel tanks after the races and the Daytona winner had unusually good fuel mileage after his last stop. Guess what? The winners fuel tank was never checked in tech and Big Bill France was entertaining VIPs from the winning car's manufacturer while the 'inspection' was being conducted. It was situations like this that soured Smokey on NASCAR and also made him a target of "cheating" accusations from NASCAR insiders, ALL of whom were cheating too but not being punished. Smokey had been campaigning for fuel cells in the cars and had been failed in tech because he used a fuel cell instead of a regular steel tank. When "Fireball" Roberts died after a bad fuel fire in 1964 at Charlotte Smokey stopped racing in NASCAR events till they required fuel cells. @@What.its.like.

Pacemaker would be my choice. Dad had one of those. I never did work out how the battery stays charged without the alternator.
