I have no experience with this model of Altberg but I did pick up a pair of Altberg Tabbing boots on ebay for a great price. The tabbing boot is built on the altberg A form last which provides a more narrow heel and wider toe box. They are extremely comfy and extremely well made. They are slightly stiffer in the sole than the more trainer style boots that some people wear. A good thing or bad thing depending on where you use them. I would highly recommend getting a pair of altberg built on the A form last. I would love to hear your opinion on them. Thanks for the video.
Hello, yes Altberg do make great products, the Defender Boot has now been replaced by an upgraded version called the " Ops" Boot which is formed on the A form last. It will be interesting to see in time if the new boot is adopted by the British Military. Altberg won some of the contracts in 2013 and 2018 MOD awards. Now there is a new tender process under way for the next generation of boots, will be interesting to see which company secures the orders Take care out there
Been hiking in these boots for years,Cost me £40 notes. The hiking club members keep purchasing fancy trendy boots that dont last long & seem to fall apart in a very short time. Some folk just seem to like chucking money away.
As you say for value for money , given that even with Altberg you can pay around 250 for new hiking boots then it does show the value these represent, The issue with Army Surplus of course can sometime be a bit of a gamble on the quality, amount of wear etc unless you are visiting the surplus store in person Take care out there
I've had a few problems with mine from new but you usually have a problem or two with new leather hiking boots, that's why you don't buy the cheaper made ones because they have worn out by the time you have them nice and broken in. All in all they will be very good but at the moment they are a bit of a PITA.
I have a genuine musket ball from Naseby. I visited the battlefield the best part of 50 years ago. A student was selling musket balls. He assured me that they were from Naseby, "I cast them in my garage, and I live in Naseby". I think I paid 10P.
Great story, I need to come back and complete the walk around the battlefield, yesterday by chance I watched some of the film " Cromwell" made in 1970 and I saw they filmed the Battle of Naseby in Spain ! Take care out there
@@ontherunplmr1218 I lived in the Midlands then, but have lived up in Scotland since 1980, so Naseby is too far out of the way for me to do the walk. I don't think there was a walk available 50 years ago. I use my "Defender" boots for hikes in the lower hills in decent weather, but step up to my Altberg "Nordkapps" for higher country. I spent yesterday with 3 friends in the Pentland hills, where I live. I wore my Norwegian patt.77 boots with 2 pairs of socks, as it was some degrees below zero. They would probably be "overkill" for most of England. I get a lot of my outdoor gear from Finland as, if it works over there, it works in Scotland. Until they chucked me out for being too old, I was in the TA, and have an interest in military history. I have several hundred bayonets, various swords, de-activated weapons, including a "Bren" dated 1942. They probably filmed "Naseby" in Spain, as you could hire the Spanish army as "extras". The weather may have been another consideration.

I wear my "Defender" boots for moderate weather in lower hills, but step up to my Altberg "Nordkapps" for more serious mountain walking. Nice but chilly ! the M77 boots are interesting because I understand the Norwegian army still use that model. I guess they are working on the principal that if it is not broke then dont fix it I am using the British army KarrimorSF winter boots which are very good watch the Ice ! Take care out there
these look like a good in-between of the Haix and the YDS Kestrels.... Haix are too heavy in my opinion, YDS Kestrel alot more comfy and light. Gonna pick a pair of these up soon! be safe
Hello, yes I think all Three are good boots and as you say the Altbergs are in the middle in terms of weight, also apart from the extreme cold weather or extreme hot, they make a good all year round boot good value for the price they sell for Take care out there
I have found my pair that are 9L ti fit well, I am a 9 large. They did supply half sizes I believe to the MOD but I have never seen any of these in the surplus market. Altberg have now stopped the Defender and moved onto their latest boot the " Ops " boot which I guess they will enter ? into the latest tender process Take care out there
In my case you are correct in that they run small, I'm usually a 9L and had to get a 10L. Usual disclaimer, that's my feet though and I like a little extra room for when my feet swell or for wearing extra socks.
Yes always better to get a bit on the larger size for the reasons you mention plus always possible to wear an extra pair of socks or spacers , while if to small not a lot can be done Take care out there
@@ontherunplmr1218 I've got a pair of ops boots there better if you've got to run though I would argue that the wider toe box isn't as necessary if you've got the correct size I've got me in a 9.5m and there great if I also like that altberg hasn't raised the price by much there 225 for the sympatex waterproof liner version in contrast my warriors in a 9.5 are again the waterproof version and I got those for 190 I highly recommend altberg to anyone on a low budget due to the fact they can be had cheap enough and will last a long time my warriors are just turning ten in march next year and my ops boots are 4 in July next year
Thanks for your input, yes taking the Defender boot, they are selling for the same price now via Army surplus as they were some years ago. Altberg do deliver a full service operation and always seem to get very positive reviews Take care out there
Hello thanks for your input, the only negative comments I have seen re the Vibram sole is that they can be slippery on wet rocks, however it is interesting that on the replacement for the "Defender" the "Ops" Boot they have replaced the Vibram sole with a Defender Hi -Traction sole Take care out there
@@ontherunplmr1218I've had Vibram soles on all my boots, but never had any that wear down as fast as these. Would you say it is worth getting them resoled or is it better to just get a new pair?

How is the Altberg sizing ? I've read on a few forums that they run on the smaller side so best to get the next size up.

I have a pair of the later models, and the Vibram soles are like putty. It costs 85 quid to have them resoled, so I think I'll bin them.
