What’s the daftest thing that you’ve gotten the heebie-jeebies over when out camping? 🏕
To the bad weather fans, sorry for the lack of soggy content of late, I can only go out to camp & film when I’m child-free on alternate weekends and I’ve just not had the bad weather on those weekends for a while. Hoping to catch some soon as I miss it and I have plans haha!
Much Love Wild Ones! :D 🌿🐻
Same back...thanks for the video 🌻🐌
1975 Army exercise in a forest in Germany in a snowy January. Got woken by a wild boar at 0200. Set a world record for high jump and the mile.
I didn't know you are a mother ❤ Makes finding time a bit more challenging, I know that myself 😅 My doughter is with me about 50 % of the week. And I'm working full time. But , no need to complain :) I think you don't have to be sorry for maybe not having enough time to make us happy on TH-cam :D Thank you for your time :)
When doing a solo walk in the 80's, shortly after watching American werewolf in London.
At about 2am walking through some woods(during a full moon) I must have startled some birds - they made a significant noise. I think I still hold the 1 mile record for running with a 20lb rucksack!
Claire -
No worries...
totally understand.
Most weekends this summer have been very wet and stormy here as well.
Just a couple of tips:
A flexible, 360° wide-brimmed hat (like a Jungle Boonie, Tilley, etc.) is foldable & packable, and when placed under the mosquito head net - helps to keep the bugs further from your face.
(It may also be useful while sleeping.)
A small portable fan (with two settings - high & low) can be really helpful in keeping you cool in the heat & humidity and has the added benefit of keeping mosquitoes away from the moving air (since they are not strong fliers).
* You may notice that less mosquitoes are around when there is a breeze (which can be helpful in choosing a camp location also.)
Happy Trails!
🇺🇸 🏕 🌲
I like that you don't sugar coat the experience. Thanks
Sometimes the most memorable camps are the ones where stuff goes wrong! The first time my dad took my brother and I out to camp when we were young children, we forgot everything... forks, knives, spoons, extra water. We got completely rained out, and couldn't get a fire going. I carved rudimentary cutlery with a swiss army knife - a rectangular spoon, a forked stick for a fork, and a butter knife, all in the rain. Keep in mind this wasn't quality. I was seven lol.
First night we skipped the tent and all slept in the car. Dad suggested we drive back an hour and a half home and come back the next day, but ultimately spent the night. The next day the sun shined, we put the tent up to dry, went fishing, swam in the lake, chatted and hung out with other campers, and drove into the nearby town to restock on water. Our second night was a blast! The stars were out, too!
We'd go back there a few times over the years, as well. The area we camped in is a very special place to me because of how things went, and I now try to carve a butter knife if I'm camping in the woods🙂
ahh what lovely memories, it sounds just perfect 💚
I love that you share your less successful trips with us. makes it far more real than just showing us the highlights.
No matter how it goes, we’re always glad to be along on one of your adventures. Thanks for sharing!
Ahh, thanks! :D
Claire, please make more stranded videos! For me it was the best content you've ever made. Absolutely brilliant to go on a journey like that with you! Love your channel!
Totally agree. I absolutely loved it and watched it more than once!
yes!! it was so much fun to watch!
It was epic.
Ahh I'm so glad you liked it :D I'm hoping to at some point, it takes me a week to walk that far so I can only attempt another one if my son goes on a school trip again and that's unlikely to happen until next year, maybe. And then it'll depend if my body looks like it's gonna cooperate at the time (my hypermobility means I'm usually working on correcting various injuries and ailments, so depends how I am). Bear with me, I really hope I can pull another starting location from the hat :D thank you so much for the kind words 💚
*Annoying Squeaky Bird* "Subscribe for more rubbish content if you want" 🤣
Love your content. It's NEVER rubbish. Every episode's a vicarious learning experience. 🥰
Ahh thanks haha! That bird was very annoying though 😄🐦
Always enjoyable Claire, regardless of the outcome! ❤
Without the bad trips how could you really appreciate the good times! That's the way life rolls.
The moon rising has caught us out on more than one occasion. When it's fuller and shining through the trees on a clear night, it's really easy to mistake it for someone's head torch, especially after you've had a beer or two.
Yehh it was so bright and really didn't look like the moon, to me anyway.. I wasn't even drinking so can't use that excuse. Maybe my brain had just melted because of the squeaky bird? Haha 🫠🐦
@@WildBeare I grew up in Northampton and that sounds EXACTLY like the squeaky bird I remember from early summer bedtimes when I was young. Must be a regional thing! Thank you for your content!
I'm hoping to get out soon in Cannock, do you have any advice for map reading or route planning?
@@WildBeare On the summer evenings, when it suddenly pops above the horizon, it's like "oh no - who's that?".
Keep up the great work. Your videos are class.
We're hoping to get out for the first time in a while, next weekend. It's been midge paradise here for the past couple of months.
@@WildBeareClaire can you explain what a squeaky bird is? We have laughing birds but not squeaky birds.
One … ONE head torch that looked like 10 I thought ppl were burying a body
Watch out for aliens Claire. Those lights looked dodgy. 😂
definitely! :) 👽🛸
I've seen them... Doing incomprehensible things for matter to do in a solid state. (Angels.)
yep defo aliens 👽😆
Rendlesham forest part 2!
@@UKTVGlod that was a hoax done by a British Army Unit to wind up the Americans,
They can’t be good all the time Claire , but we would watch whatever you produce
Poor girl, the bugs were plentiful in that windless woodland.
The glow worms were spectacular.
Thanks for sharing.
Oh, the squeaky bird is a young tawny owl.
Claire you need to get a thermal spotter so you can look around to spot anyone or thing creeping around, if it doesn’t pick anything up it’s not there
Oo interesting idea! Like for hunting? They look expensive but it would be fun to play with one of those :)
I'd watch you camp in your back garden if that is all the content you can do. I find it relaxing watching someone pitch up a camp.
Aw thank you so much :) 🏕
Me too !
Yes!! I think that would be a great lil video!! 👏❤
@@Lightandlovetoyouyes! Hello from the Polish countryside 🏡🐕 and my channe!
Bugs, polluted water, staring eyes in the forest, food tastes funny, forgotten the wet wipes and why can't I just be happy for once!
Apart from the forest bit it's like being at my house.
You poor thing 🤗🤗 still enjoyed watching, being attacked by a mosquito to size of a pigeon 🤣🤣🤣 you always make me smile
The first time I solo wild camped was near a road due to losing the light. I was so nervous! I was just dropping off to sleep when I was woken up by a bright light shining into the tent!
I lay there not daring to move, convinced someone was shining a torch into my tent. After a few seconds I realised it was my phone lighting up with a message! 😀
Ahh yep I've had that before, I had my gopro on facing the tent filming a night sky time-lapse, and as it ran out of battery it lit up bright and I thought the exact same thing 😄 seriously give me ghosts and ghouls any day over another person haha
@@WildBeare ha ha I know! I always dread being discovered and moved on!
You got out the door , organised to give yourself the opportunity to embrace the things you love, thats never a fail .
The summer bugs here in Maine USA are wretched too, Claire. They scoffed at bug repellant. I had to pitch my tent on a hike just to have lunch in peace! 😂 Take care and have a lovely weekend. 🌲🏕🌲
Claire, first time I caught a trip you made on your channel that you were not getting rain. I would say the mosquitos took the rains place on this trip. Enjoy your channel. Beautiful yet tuff lady ❤❤😊
Hi Rick! Haha yep the mozzies don't seem to be deterred by bug repellent here in UK either 😄 Thank you, you too friend :) 🌿
@@mvroman7416 haha yes you might be right about that, I definitely prefer the rain 😄 thank you so much :)
1:26, "my eye lids are sweating" LOL!
👀💦
Well done lass🏆Mozzies and midges really love me too! I use 3 pieces of kit in order to bivvy in summer 1. Snugpak 'Jungle Bag' has a built in mesh (I couple this with a head net) 2. Flextail 'Tiny Repel' 3. Avon 'Skin So Soft' spray with c15 drops of tea tree oil/Olbas oil. If it is going to be bad I take some citronella joss sticks. Hope you slept well👍
Even the insects love you and your content Claire, too much though methinks; shame they can’t hit the like button….summer hey… 🥵🥵🤣🤣
Haha thanks, autumn soon! 😍🍂🍁
Consider using just the inner of a lightweight tent, becomes an easy ‘mosquito dome’ then a tarp over the top gives you a similar ‘open’ camping situation and no bugs…
Mm yes you're right, I think this is the way forward! :)
That was my thought too, because it’s what I do for snake protection too - there’s a lot of bitey things in Australia :-)
@@peter-robinson You are right.
My thought exactly. I use the NORDISK SVALBARD 1 person tent. Nordisk makes the Svalbard in 2 versions: PU heavy weight by cheaper and SI lightweight, but more expensive.
@@WildBeare Madame, may I donate my Nordisk Svalbard SI 1 person tent to you? It is used, yet in very good condition. The yellow guy ropes I have replace with Olive Green ones for outdoor stealth camping. The colour of the tent is dark green and a 3 x 2.4 meter camo net will cover it. Weight 1.7 kg/ 3.74 lbs.
I feel your pain... Here in the summer, a tent is a necessity to keep the bugs out.. and also to keep from waking up with a snake in your bivvy. Whippoorwills will keep singing almost all night too... not sure if you all have those or not.
What do "Whipoorwills" sound like?
Mm I've only ever seen 2 snakes in the UK; a baby grass snake in north wales and an adder at Mildenhall in England. If I saw them more often I definitely wouldn't feel so comfortable bivi camping! Mind you the bugs on this one have put me off a bit now 😄
Arrrggh! bivvy / tarp camping when you have a perfectly good midge proof tent!!!
I slept in a swag bag under a mozzie net on a trip from Darwin to Cairns, it was hot so I slept with my leg out of the swag and rolled into the mosquito net in the night and woke with hundreds of bites along my leg. I learned a hard lesson about the persistence of mosquitos and the need for the net to be held away from your body.
I hope your face doesn't swell up with the bites.
Ohh noo, that sounds terrible! Yeh it did, I had a massive nose for a while 😄 it has put me off summer bivi's a bit, not had them so aggressive before, bloody things. Thanks for watching my daft lil vid :)
your content is never rubbish, claire. thank you for showing your fails as well as your successes, its always nice to know that even the "professionals" have bad days sometimes. we love you anyway!
Don’t sweat it, we all have average adventures. Just makes you really appreciate the good ones.😊😊😊
Oh no 😅 At least the curry was delicious.
I am usually scared by some weird noise and think everything is a wild boar. (Czech Republic)
That's true 😄🥘 Oooh I'd really love to see a wild boar! We have them here in England in the Forest of Dean but people have reported seeing them elsewhere too. Thanks for watching my lil video :)
Thank you for showing us the ones that don't go so well. It is a nice injection of realism.
Hi Claire,
Nice little camp, sometimes the unplanned ones are the best, and this time you managed to avoid a midnight hot-spot with loads of head torches 🔦 😀
Cheers
Graham
Hey Graham! Hope you're good :) yes this is true haha! Hopefully the next one will be more successful 😄 have a great week, Claire 🐻
@@WildBeare Looks like you've found a little gemof a place there apart from the bugs and unidentified lights that is. No cockchafers this time 🤣😂
Any day I get to see Claire in the wild is a good day!
We are fortunate to follow you on your trips and your content is never rubbish but always fun to watch.
Great video Claire. Exploring a new area in the woods and searching for a campsite there has something primal - in a good way. I love dooing that.
Your way dealing with uncomfortable situations is inspiring
Hi bab love the video the bird you can hear is a female Tawny Owl. Making a begging call when you hear the twoo that’s the male calling back. 😊
It's a juvenile Tawny Owl (could be male or female) calling to attract its parents, hoping they will bring food. The adult female has a harsh "kee-wick" or "too-wit" call, while the male's is the familiar hooting "too-woo".
Heyy thanks, is it really! I did not know that, something new that I've learned today thank you 🦉funny, the males call is one of my favourite sounds 💚
@@WildBeare
If you have the calls on your phone the Tawny will call back and sometimes come to say hello I’ve had them flying around my head when I’ve had fires on the towpath. 😊Thanks again for these amazing videos.
Hey at least you've got the bottle to go do this kinda thing! I say successful mission and you definitely learned a few things during. 👍😎
A great effort Claire! It's s always worth the peace of mind even when the bugs are bad or it's too hot. Those lights sure were odd. I have seen the very faint green glowing gas light coming off of rotted wood at night before. I thought I was hallucinating the first time😅. The wood with green mold stain seems to be the one and the trick is to look barely to the side instead of the center of your eyes focus. Where the optic nerve converges is a bit of a blind spot so you can see faint stars and such better by doing this. Astronomy class trick😊 Thanks for sharing!
Wow that's amazing! I've noticed that sometimes at night I can only see faint things if I don't look directly at them, that must be why. I'm gonna look out for this phenomenon and see if I can see it :D thanks for sharing and for watching my lil vid 💚
@@WildBeare I wonder if a slow shutter speed could capture it? You're the expert with that though! Always looking forward to your next vid😊
Love the rubbish! Nice 9 minute escape, Claire ❣
Love your little adventures precisely because you don’t know if it is going to be an enjoyable camp for you, so interesting because it’s real ❤
I dont comment much but I'm so happy to watch your adventures. Sending blessings and love your way! 🫶
Squeaky bird was a young Tawny owl. We have them behind our house and hear them at night.
Thank you I had no idea this was a tawny! I love the sound of the males 🦉
Sounded more like and edible dormouse (glis glis)
That was a tough one. Bugs, bugs and bugs. One mental bird.
'Sci-fi movie light show' in the distance.
So much for soothingly 'being in nature'.
That decision to put a bed in the car must have felt like a winner again. 😉
There's something actually quite refreshing about watching a summer camp when the weather (at the time of watching) is freezing 🥶. . Well nearly freezing
Lovely adventure once again. 👌👍👍. The bugs and the creatures of the outdoors were all over you that night. When I've gone camping I woke up the next day with bites from I don't know what all over me.
The “noisy bird’ you could hear for most of the night was a young Tawny Owl calling for food from the parents
Thank you! I had no idea it was a tawny, I much prefer the males call haha
I've watched Stranded three times so far - it's one of the most inspiring things I've watched recently. So much so, I'm planning my own trek! I've decided to go from my home in Coventry, to Lowestoft! The main thing I took from Stranded, was that no matter what the news or social media would have us believe, most people are good humans. It's important to remember that.
Clair, it’s always a pleasure to see you try and chill. Hopefully it gets better. 🪳🦟😎
Freaky lights Claire, I was camping in a local woods last summer, and woke in the night thinking someone was shining a torch on my tent, but it was a crazy full moon shining through the trees :) happy camping!
The moon is so bright sometimes isn't it! Thank you friend, you too :) 🏕
What a wonderful channel to discover with such a delightful host. I discovered your channel after Stranded popped up in my feed. Incredible! So enjoyed you taking us along. Having been to the UK several times, my trips were primarily in London, but did take excursions to various tourist spots. You using a map and showing where you are is much appreciated. I also really appreciate you showing the power of the weather and how you dealt with the wet conditions, including drying your clothes. This video was excellent. The lights in the trees was strange and your added text was excellent. As you may guess, I'm binging your videos this weekend. Thanks for bring us along.
i always look forward to your videos and escapades. keep the videos coming!
First few days of spring here in Sydney and the temps are bouncing along. Today it was 30c and the winter camping gear is being switched out. Mat, bug net and heading to the blue mountains for a weekend. Happy days whenever I get to see a new video. 👍🇦🇺😊
Great idea, Claire, just treat it as a reconnaissance. Now you know, what you need to know, for next time 😊
I miss stranded, too, it was superb adventuring.
Thank you :) 💚
Great again I always look forward to your walks 😊x etc
You are brillant, you are improving. Each adventure is enlightening. "Words do not teach" Experence is what you have revel in the experence, hold it close and smile❤ you do good!
I remind myself when a trip turns sour that not all of them can be good. Like driving down a road , you don't appreciate the smooth road till you hit a bumpy one. It reminds me that the good comes with the bad. It's then I make the bad a good one by enjoying it, as hard as it is to do at times.... but it can be done.
Love all your videos Claire. It helps to keep everything real for us, and when we go out and have our moments of frustration, it's good to know it doesn’t always have to be perfect 😊
Sometimes I think you have a rather perverse definition of relaxation, what with sleep deprivation, feeding swarms of insects and wondering about strange noises and lights. :-)*
Haha you and me both! 😄Hopefully the next one will be a little more successful :)
That was a Wild One! 😂
But in the end you walked towards a perfect sunrise.
And I could enjoy a new adventure with you. 😊
Aw thanks for sharing it with me, it deffo was a pretty morning :) I'm not usually up for sunrise haha! Have a great weekend 🌿
Enjoy your videos. Honest and refreshing and your voiceovers are quite relaxing to listen to. Keep it going
Hello from Northampton! 👋Love all your videos! Good to see you enjoying the countryside here, even though it didn't go exactly to plan! We all still enjoy watching them! 👍
Hellooo! 👋 Your county is so beautiful! 😍 Thank you so much, have a lovely weekend :)
Glad we don’t have those barking deer here, just lots of black bears 🐻. Thank you Clair ❤️🇺🇸
The Muntjac are non-stop 😄 I would be absolutely terrified of camping with the prospect of being eaten though, you guys are braver than me haha!
Thanks for walking the walk and talking the talk.
Your videos are highly entertaining.
It might not have worked out the way you wanted Claire but the sounds of all the animals and insects was wonderful.
I don't care if every trip video is perfect. They are all worth watching. Every single one.
Aw thank you :D
Thanks for taking us on another great adventure, have you tried getting one of those Thermacell thing to get rid of mosquitoes Steve Wallis from Camping with Steve uses one and swears by it . Look forward to the next video.
Love and respect again from Boston. Your content is sooo enjoyable, Beare!! I love it when you release a new vid. Keep up the good work!!!
Thank you so much :D best wishes from England 👋
Glad it was just the moon and not some creepy people or aliens in the woods! Lol. Love your choice of music.
Great to watch a new video, them dam midges....❤
A wise man once said, "the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.." thank you for a great video Claire. Even though things didn't go as planned it's still an excellent reminder that in the real world sometimes they just don't and you just have to keep moving forward (so to speak). Keep up the good work..!
Another entertaining & informative video! In case you haven't come across it before, can highly recommend Jungle Formula Maximum insect repellant in the roll-on form - try not to get it on your hands & thereby onto plastics, as it tends to melt them! I hammock a lot and use this stuff in the summer, but often have a head bug net on at night as well. I put a band of it on my forehead, a band on the back of my neck, a dab on the front of my neck and a stripe down each of my arms. I don't put it on my hands in case I rub my eyes in my sleep (only needed to do that once to learn my lesson!).
I am not a camper by any means (I like my bed too much) but I love watching you. Your content isn’t silly, it just shows you’re human & sometimes things don’t add up & it scares us. The barking was foxes, and that’s scary enough when they do it outside my house at night, never mind being out in the open with them. Hopefully next time will be better for you ❤
Birds really don't give af lol. "you wanna sleep???? HAHAHAHA"
Haha aw bless ya my little beautiful wild friend! I v xx oils never have told you those lights were the moon that’s mad!
What a fun little video, sorry it wasn’t the chilled out camp you’d hoped for but keep exploring those little areas close to home, one might be absolutely brilliant!!! Love you xxx
Hey friend! Yeh it didn't look like the moon did it?! Well it did when I looked at the time-lapse afterward, but at the time I could have sworn there was some kind of alien abduction going on haha. Miss you and love you lots, hope you're ok 💞Xx
I'm NEVER disappointed watching your videos. Thank you ever so much ❤
Thanks for another enjoyable video. Your content is eagerly awaited. Hope the next outing is more amenable 🙂🙂 Cheers.
Another Claire upload 👌 my morning is complete , watching this whilst prepping food for the masses . Be safe 🙏
Exactly why I like Winter camping!
At my age my idea of roughing it consist of camping in my air conditioned fully self contained camper without the TV. I used to do the roughing it until I got caught in Yellowstone in a cheap bag and tent with the constant threat of Grizzly bears and Elk tripping over my tent and I came unglued from the ground gear.
I still love watching you do it because of your enthusiasm and zanny sense of humor and let’s face it you still look beautiful even with a bug net on lol. God Bless my little friend, keep your socks dry ☮️out.
haha thank you :) I think you're very brave.. I don't think I would last long with the threat of being eaten alive and I definitely wouldn't sleep 😄 have a lovely weekend friend 🌿
I always hit the like button before I watch. Because I just know!!
Use "skin so soft", a spray product that isn't much bigger than the palm of your hand to ward off mozzies/ midges.
You can purchase it from a decent pharmacy ( boots always have it in)
The lights you could see were probably hunters going for rabbits/ foxes.
The good comes with the less good (never rubbish) experiences and we subscribe for all of them. Your content is supercool and you are braver than I am!!! Don’t beat yourself up about it and I look forward to the next one. 😊
I take a Sea to Summit pyramid mosquito net when I go tarp camping and clip it onto my ridge line. Can be a bit of a faff when you need to get up in a hurry, but it helps me sleep better when the Australian mosquitos (and other crawlies) are out and about. I hike and camp on my own as well, and I get the heebie-jeebies plenty of times with strange noises and lights. I even had a group doing a trail run with headlamps at 2am go past my camp that, although amusing in the end, was anything but as I saw a dozen headlamps heading towards me.
Ohh gawd my heart would be beating out of my chest! 😄 Yes they're handy those bug nets, deffo could have done with one of those! Thanks for watching :)
Love that you show the reality of it. The number of times I've thought about lights being torches...
Same! And if it actually is torches, of course I assume it's people burying a body 😄
Imagine hearing the tune from close encounters of the third kind during those flashing lights 👽🤣. Great vid.
"A very aggressive mosquito that sounds like it's the size of a pigeon..."... That made me chuckle...😁👍Brilliant...! Despite the lack of sleep, still great to get out there and give it a bash...😉
Tried my first ever wild camp last month - decided to combine it with a hill walk and ended up underestimating the impact of an overheavy pack on my unprepared body. 2/3 of the way up my legs both went into cramp and I had to crawl up another 100m to find somewhere flat enough to stop before it got dark. Managed to pitch my tent and then just lay inside in the fetal position while my my quads, hams and calves all spasmed over and over for 2 hours. Eventually it stopped but i just could not sleep worrying about how i was going to get down, so i just lay awake til first light and then managed to limp my way home.
Maybe a smaller hike next time :D
They often do road repairs at night, that could explain the lights, also seen farmers working the night shift to get their fields harvested.
Really an example of ‘accepting the rough as well as the smooth’ ~ moments like being eaten by mozzies, but then other moments such as Northern Lights and wild swimmin 😊
Claire's videos are fun because they're full of style points....no boring progressions really to speak of. 🎉💚💚💚💚😉😉
Some trips are just like that. Thankyou for sharing the reality's of camping.
These kind of camps make the good ones even better!
Great video again 👍
I was starting to wonder if you had found your own Rendlesham Forest!
That's what I was thinking. Never seen the Moon look like that, very strange.
Just looked this up, interesting! 🛸
@@lapoguslapogus7161 Me neither, it was strange. It moved along the horizon the whole night, seemed quite unusual 🤔
@@WildBeare Not sure if it was extra-terrestrial, but if not it was definitely supernatural, and very strange. I like what you do, finding places to camp and bivvy away from the crowds. Any plans for a trip to the Highlands and some proper mountains?
Loooooooove the edits. Ah gods you are such an adventure.
Thank you ❤🙏🏼🫶🏻
Absolutely love the content, you’re a true inspiration 🌸💚
Definitely Rendlesham Forest Vibes!
That lighthouse is annoying
Honest content. You do great and it’s always a pleasure to watch your videos. Stay safe and take care
You a such a lovely woman, And i agree it does look like a low full moon with branches dancing in the wind in front of it. It is easy to allow ourselves to be spooked, and im sure even more so being a lady out in the woods alone.
Sometimes things don't always go to plan, but that's okay, because it means that something upcoming will go to plan.
Your videos are so wholesome ! I have always enjoyed nature lifestyle when younger. Camping etc
Now in London city for work everyone thinks the city life is it for everyone but truth be told I’d rather be exploring nature and random nice spots with a nice campfire, big cup of coffee and something nice to eat looking at the stars !
i laughed hard during this trip. i have been in the same situation so many times camping during the hot weather! bugs just swarming and not able to sleep. the look on your face was priceless leaving your camp. ha-ha i enjoyed it even though you were wore out. thank you for the video.
