Today we head to Brixworth in Northhamptionshire to see the Brixworth Saxon Church. This monumental structure demonstrates the capabilities of Saxon architects producing a huge church that would suffer surprisingly little remodelling in later centuries allowing us to see the original saxon fabric of the building and admire the scope and size of what they could build. So many English churches and cathedrals see their origins in the Norman and Gothic periods it is easy to forget that of which the Saxons were capable.

I read about this church in books 40 years ago -- and now, having living long enough to enjoy the wonder that is TH-cam, I can see it in detail! (I have been to other Saxon churches, such as Greensted and Sompting, but not this one.)

If there's one thing that has shown its unwavering durability (for the most part, dissolution of the monasteries notwithstanding) it's the multiplicity of church buildings across the British Isles; as sturdy as ever and protected by that aura of God that people had revered so intensely and for so long.

Obvious it's still in use, which is good to see! Wonder when the organ would have gone in, or what records or other history remains in the church's posession?

I can't say for certain but I think it is likely from the 1865-66 restoration. A lot of smaller churches got their organs around this time after industrialisation made them substantially cheaper. Similarly the bells are from the 1600s when bell casting became cheaper and more reliable. Most churches get their core set of bells around this time (with later additions or replacements). The parish records would know for sure though, this is all conjecture on my part.

Adrian. I think you have a bit of a cheek standing behind the altar and speaking! You missed the importance of the high viewing window at the west end of the church gained by stairs your research should have considered this!

Often the tower is the best preserved saxon feature of a church like at all saints earls barton, st micheals northgate Oxford, and st peters barton upon humber

That was not a village church to begin with and it has plenty of features drawn from the hall.

Glad you liked it! Brixworth is about 10 miles directly north of Northampton, about half way between Rugby and Kettering.
