My father, a flight mechanic during WWII, told me of a B-25 that they had mounted a 105 recoilless rifle (canon) as a way to increase it's forward firing power. He said test firing the weapon while flying would feel like the plane jerked to a stop with flames covered the cockpit windshield & after a few firings, when the returned to air base, they found that all of rivets heads in front of the canon were worn smooth!

    • @KuroHebi

    • @queenannesrevenge3770

Is it a recoil less rifle or a cannon because those two are not the same thing and it makes a difference.
If it's a recoiless rifle, then that's an insane idea to mount one in a plane. If you know how recoiless rifles work, you know why.
A 105mm cannon on the other hand, is not such a dumb idea. And would be more practical, I think.

  • @matchesburn

The B-25 was an absolute beast of a workhorse. They put a 75mm cannon in some models (like the Navy's PBJ model). Modifications like this that are just flying gun platforms. The Soviets, for some reason, when they received some earlier model B-25s *_decided that they were heavy fighters._* The Soviets were *_actually attempting to dogfight with this._* They were pulling such maneuvers and stressing the airframe so much that they'd have to go by and replace and re-rivet all the rivets that were coming loose or popped off during said combat.
Even the Soviets eventually realized maybe this wasn't the best idea and stopped doing it for the most part. The fact that useful numbers of Pe-2/Pe-3s came around also saw it shift more to that as a heavy fighter.
It's kinda amazing how even after indigenous Soviet aircraft that were finally available came online, you saw a lot of Soviet pilots of P-39/P-63s and things of that nature that didn't really want to trade in their Lend-Lease aircraft for their La-5, Yak-7 or their late-model Yak-9 series.
Makes me wonder if Shermans were a large part of the Lend-Lease equipment (this is a huge hypothetical because the timelines of available don't line up or make sense for it to be sent, by the time M4 Shermans were available we were already in the war and needed them and the Soviets already had the T-34) how much more they would've liked it over their T-34. My guess? Vastly more.

The PBJ-1H, a navy variant of the B-25, had a 75mm cannon mounted in the nose, slightly to its left, along with guns, pods, and a bomb bay. It was used as an anti-ship striker/bomber.

Awsome.. My Great Uncle flew a B 25. He went down in a storm around Bougainville June 5th 1944. My Grandpa was headed to the beach at Normandy..Granpa made it back. God Bless our troops.

I like that it was the first bomber to be deployed from an Aircraft Carrier. Those ones had a few less armorments though.

The P-47 Thunderbolt was a brutal ground-attack plane with 8 50 caliber guns but 14 from the B-25J had to be truly devastating.

Fun fact, there was an earlier model of this ground pound model of B-25 with a 75mm canon in the nose in stead of the 6 guns at the front
