Can YOU Survive This Actual B-25 Mission? (Probably Not)

- This is another episode from my "Would You Survive" series, featuring a B-25 Mitchell bomber from World War II. This is B-25 Bomber SNAFU (41-30054) and it's final raid to Rabaul in the South Pacific. This was made using the World War II flight simulator War Thunder. Important note - because I could not find images for each of these crewmembers, I had an artist recreate generic images for all of them so that they would have a headshot for this video. I actually got to watch a B-25 (Killer Bee) start up, taxi, and takeoff from suprisingly close! It was genuinely one of the greatest experiences of my entire life.

My Father was in the Marine air corps in the south pacific. he was a radio gunner (waist) in the bomber group VMB-443 only the Marine B-25 was known as a PBJ-25 and they actually flew missions on Rabaul, New Brittan & many other of the Soleman islands! thank you so much for doing this! as my Father didn't talk much about his combat missions it wasn't until many years after he passed that I found out a lot about what he was involved in but I still would have many questions for him but thanks to your wonderful video it helps to add another piece of that "puzzle" once again thank you so very much!!

Historical note - For this story, I was actually only able to locate one or two images of the actual crewmembers. So I had an artist recreate general 1940s airmen headshot portraits for me to use for all of them. So these are not their actual images since I was not able to locate them.
The B-25 was a helluva combat plane. And this is wonderful animation.

B-25 was designed to, and indeed proved very capable to maintain flight on one engine... SNAFU must've sustained additional damage, forcing a ditch in the drink. Thank you for this as well as all of your well-crafted, in-depth and informative historical animated recreations, I watch them all!
Picked 3; waist gunner was never likely to end well but I was kind of rooting for that crew... A good way to bring home just how random and cruel war could be.
Here in Brazil, during WW2, between 1942 and 1944, we received by Lend-Lease 30 aircraft B 25 Mitchell versions, B, C, D, and J. based in the northeast of the country, at the air base of Fortaleza and Natal. Its main mission was maritime patrol against German submarines. After WW2, we received by American Republic Projects another 64 planes that provided a glorious and unforgettable work in the FAB, Brazilian Air Force until mid-1970. My sincere thanks to all these North American heroes and their aeronautical industry.🎖️

Picked #4 too. For once I was lucky. Or, was I ? Now I have the privilege to develop PTSD.
I rolled a die for my position and survived! Not only that, but I was a handsome devil too. Thanks for putting this together. It was fun to see if I made it and to hear the history of these heroes.

From 1943-45, my dad crewed on the Marine Corps variant of the B-25, the mostly unknown 'PBJ' (VMB-612). The Commemorative Air Force is currently flying the last PBJ in existence.

I decided to go as the Captain. Welp, at least my sacrifice wasn't in vain. Better that than dying undignified in a POW camp.
TJ, these videos are the best! I had picked #5, co-pilot. This element of picking a crew member really is a great concept. When you give your viewers a role and allow them to participate it really takes the video to a higher level!
Maybe. One of my grandfathers did. He was a gunner on a B25 in the Pacific from just after the Guadalcanal campaign until wars end. He mostly did anti-sub and anti-shipping. Some CAS. After that, he pretty much refused to fly the rest of his life.
I chose Position 6, the pilot Captain Anderson. Unfortunately, I was killed in action. But I love the concept behind these videos, and I hope you make more of them in the future. Adds a very cool immersive experience, while at the same time telling a true story of WW2. Loved it.
Should have done the Doolittle Raid - one of the lesser known flights unlike Doolittle's plane or Lawson's Ruptured Duck. That would have been an awesome "would you have survived?" Maybe you can do a "would you survive taking off in a B-26" lol. Also - were they actually Zeros? Or the IJA equivalent Oscars?
According to records, they were Zeros.
You've got to be kidding me, I chose Bombardier and Navigator number 4 and I was already prepared to pay the ultimate sacrifice, anyway I survived.
I took the role of the bombardier cause I knew that if a Zero would come behind, the tail gunner would get hit, not pilot or copilot cause if we had to crash land they would get hit by waves or ground, the engineer would be the most protected, so i survived with luck too, Honor to these heroes o7

I knew I was a Redshirt, the minute I picked a Waist Gunner. Top Turret Gunner would be the best, but he didn't make it either.
My Grandpa was a mechanic for these stateside on WW2. They could take a beating.

My Great Uncle was a 25 pilot. Shot down once in Steamin Jean..Landed in a river. Did beer runs to Australia. Was lost in a storm near Bougainvillea..God Bless my Uncle and Pappy Gunn for arming those Hot Rods..
Dad was a B 25 pilot stationed in Australia. He flew 68 missions over New Guinea. He said after they got P 51 escort they no longer carried gunners or bombs. They would perform high angle straffing runs on ships. They would slow down dangerously because of recoil and then have to pull out quickly to get away from anti-aircraft fire.

My parents worked at North American Aviation during the war and helped to build B-25's and P-51's. They met at the NA sub assembly plant in Pasadena, CA. Previous to that my dad had worked at the NA plant in Culver City, CA. LAX is where the plant used to be located.
I got to fly on Maid in the Shade (the B-25 in the background of the gentleman talking) last year! It was so cool!!!!

I was the pilot at position 6, and here I thought I might've made it. Darn!
The B-25 did not have a bombadier/navigator. The pilot toggled the bombs with a switch on the control column as there was no bomb site. The nose was a solid (no glass) structure with machine guns. There were three crew members in the front of the aircraft and the radio operator and tail gunner in the back. As a navigator, my dad’s aircraft ended up ditching a couple miles from Hainan Harbor into the South China Sea. This was “his” first mission. Suspected cause of ditching was delayed fuses on bombs apparently weren’t set correctly as the bombs detonated before the aircraft was clear of the target. My dad mentioned to me how when they were flying over the target….they were so low that the lead wingman’s 1000lb bombs were bouncing higher than they were flying. The next morning Zero’s began staffing the submarine that was rescuing him and two others (radioman and tail gunner went down with the aircraft), three B-25’s and a B-24 were orbiting above to assist in providing air support. He went on to fly another 17 combat missions and numerous recon missions of which he did not receive credit.4

Thanks my dad flew b25s in Europe he fought oil field he was a copilot he never talked about it he was injured and moved to the pacific me and my family never knew anything about it because he never talked about it thank you
The number I chose made me the captain pilot of the bird. Once I realized I was the pilot I had a feeling I wouldn’t hav survived the ordeal. However I didn’t think I would essentially drown, instead I thought the plane would be heavily damaged and I would order my comrades to bail out and I would fly the plane into the biggest and closest target possible.
I got to fly on a B-25, 2 b-17s, a T-6 Texan (SNJ) and take the stick, a Stearman, a P-2 Neptune, and about 6 flights on a Navy C-118. While 20 years in the Navy as an avionics technician, I took many flights on the P-3 Orion, AF C-141, C-130, and once on a C-5 Galaxy (short flight from Cubi Point to Clark AFB.
I chose the engineer. Thought maybe I got the million dollar wound, no such luck.

Great video! David Koenig was from my hometown of New Bremen, Ohio. His name is pronounced kay-nig. On the other side of plane her name was MFUTU.... more fouled up than usual. Someday I hope they recover SNAFU/MFUTU and recover his remains to be returned home.
My brother (a decorated Marine who served in Vietnam), got a copy of our father’s discharge papers after he died. What they showed was our father had over 100 missions in the Billy Mitchell, serving from the beginning of WW2 until the end. Wow! We had no idea. He received 7 medals of Valor for his service. If we had only known!
I got to see Maid In the Shade a few weeks ago again. Great time with my nephew.
I have a couple questions. Who operated the top turret? We're the forward firing 50s operated by the pilot? Finally, who fired the nose gun? I was the pilot, which is not a good thing since I'm afraid of flying(which means I wouldn't have been in the air Corp in the first place).
I picked station #5, bummer. Have you done anything on Paul Irving "Pappy" Gunn? That is one heck of a story.

I have always liked viewing the nose art on WW2 American aircraft. I especially like the ones with the pin-up girls. This art would be relatively tame by today's standards.
9:28, The Zero also had 20 mm. cannon.
Both times, I failed to even exit the plane and was killed in the initial crash. Yay...
Maybe you should just bail next time. Haha

I died. 2lt Koeing died a warrior's death. Bringing down a wounded bomber takes both pilots and it's likely his death saved some of the others.

I flew in that actual plane two weeks ago. They were in Virginia and were awesome!! I highly recommend taking a flight!! Great folks and a beautiful plane!!

Great story and animations!! I'm curious though, was the B-25 not able to maintain flight with only one engine? I'm surprised by the fact that they had to ditch with the lose of only one engine. Heroes one and all!!!
It unfortunately was very rare for the aircraft to stay airborne. Only a very experienced pilot along with dumping anything they could to reduce weight. My dad’s flew with the 345th and the history of the unit had many cases where aircraft were unable to maintain flight with one engine out. You have to remember that most of the pilots 20 to 22 years old and had never flown an aircraft until they were trained by the Army Air Corp.

RAF dunsford is still exists today it was use of RAF Michelle between 1943 to after d-day of 1944. You should do can you survive this like in the Lancaster please visit east kirkby of the Lancaster called just jane.
