Benzos aren’t typically active if you snort or shoot them up cuz they don’t pass the mucous membranes well. If you drop an xan in a sprite it doesn’t actually mix and bind to the soda like a opiate would. It just falls to the bottom in clumps. They’re active orally. I like this scene because it shows that Gale isn't innocent. He knew exactly what he was doing and even had an opportunity to never join Fring's drug empire. But instead of just checking the purity and moving on, he petitions Gus to be the chemist for his empire even going so far as to say he could make a kilo right here in his lab. BB and BCS does a good job of showing how everyone who went into the drug trade has blood on their hands from the crazy and violent Tucos to the seemingly friendly and peaceful Gales.

    • @talilover5979
      @talilover5979 ปีที่แล้ว +110

      "innocent" is a hard term to apply to most in breaking bad, but Gale is probably the one who comes closet to it when talking about the drug business. Keep in mind he's a pretty big libertarian who earnestly believes people should have the right to use meth if they want, and if that's the case they should be getting the best they can (either through him or someone like Walt, which is why there was no jealousy or insecurity from him when he got some of Walt's stuff just pure admiration). Think it's also worth noting just how out of the loop he seems with the nitty gritty of the drug business, remember that Gus lied to him about what was going on with Walt and why he needed to be ready to replace him. In other words he's not doing it for malicious or greedy reasons, he just genuinely believes in providing a good "product."

    • @quilenblackwell4820
      @quilenblackwell4820 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      I disagree with this take. Gale knows that meth is illegal and that cartel men like Gus are very dangerous. So I don't buy that him being a libertarian who is a bit aloof means he didn't know the risks of getting involved in the illegal drug trade. The fact that they make the point of showing Gale lock his hidden meth drawer in his lab TWICE means that Gale is well aware of implications of his actions. I think he simply thought that he was too far removed for death and destruction to come knocking on his door.

      I'm not pulling "he's a libertarian" out of my ass or anything, I'm simply repeating the things Gale himself said. He's a criminal and he's aware he's breaking the law, I never implied otherwise, I'm just saying he isn't as ruthless or malicious as other characters in the business.

    • @subjectdelta17
      @subjectdelta17 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Exactly.
      People like to rest the majority of evil in the series on Walt, but the majority of characters in both series did pretty awful things.
      Hell, even Hank. He was so ego driven to be "the one who slaps the cuffs on Heisenberg" that he advised Skylar to not go to a lawyer, and purposefully hid the case from the DEA so he'd have full control of it, which led to his and Steve gomezes deaths.

    • @Lazerstory
      @Lazerstory ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@quilenblackwell4820 I agree with you that it doesn't seem plausible that Gale would ignore the amorality and dangerousness of the business he's in. After all, the violence caused by the drug business is well known : death by murder for gang members (by the police or other gang members), overdose for the consumers... The list goes on. I don't think someone like Gale would be that ignorant.
      He does say that he's a libertarian, but if I'm not mistaken (english is not my first language), this word can mean two very different things : first, it can be used to talk about left-wing libertarians (or socialist libertarians), which are concerned with morality in economics (and thus won't like the idea of someone selling a harmful product to vulnerable people and making profit off of it) but also believe in the right for everyone to do what they want with their own body (based on the idea that someone's liberties stop where others' begin). In short, socialist libertarians would want to ban selling drugs but allow consuming drugs.
      The second main type of libertarians however is quite different and is more of a right-wing ideology. Right-wing libertarians basically want a market that's totally free : when two individuals make a transaction, according to them, the only rules that should apply are those that both of them agreed on. They are kind of hardcore liberal capitalists, quite close to anarcho-capitalists.
      So the question is : which libertarian is Gale ? I originally thought that he was in left-wing (considering that he's a vegan, which is more of a left-wing thing), but that would mean he wasn't aware of the immorality of the drug business (otherwise it would be contrary to his values to take part in it) and, like I said above, I don't find it plausible.
      There are several things that hint that Gale is a right-wing libertarian.
      First, here is his justification for making meth : "Consenting adults want what they want, and if I'm not supplying it, they will get it somewhere else. At least with me, they're getting exactly what they pay for." For him, the fact that his customers would make a deal with someone else if he didn't sell them meth is enough to justify doing it. We can sense that he just sees the drug business as a competitive economic market in which he can succeed because he can make a "better" product than his competitors. We can also find the liberal idea that "the customers can choose in which direction the economy goes by choosing to buy some products and not others", placing the responsibility for the damage caused by the product's production or consumption on the buyer rather than the seller. Gale also (purposefully ?) ignores some other things : the fact that some (if not most) of this clients are addicted and don't completely choose to buy meth, or the fact that his 96% pure meth is more addictive than the 67% meth (according to the show), which means that Gale's customers are far from being "consenting adults".
      In short, this phrase is filled with right-wing ideological elements that justify selling a product that harms the people who consume it.
      Second, according to people online, Gale had political stickers on his car showing that he supports someone named Ron Paul. According to Wikipedia, Ron Paul is a right-wing american politician. He's a libertarian, partisan of the free market, anti-abortion and approved building an anti-immigration wall between Mexico and the USA in 2006.
      I think that answers the question : you're right, it seems that Gale perfectly knows the reality of the drug business, he just doesn't care. For him, all his customers are fully consenting, so everything bad that happens to them is entirely on them. And Gale can make millions by making people's lives more violent without feeling bad about it.
      So like you said, Gale isn't innocent nor is he a good person. He's just doesn't like the idea that he can be responsible for the trouble in someone else's life, and built himself an ideology to eliminate remorse for his actions.
      PS: you said that Gale hiding the meth in a locked drawer meant that he was aware that taking part in the drug business was bad. I don't agree : just because someone hides something from someone else doesn't mean this thing is bad. It just means the people he hides it from think it's bad.

    This actually makes senses as to why Gale successfully persuaded Gus to hire Walter. In this scene, Gale is confident to the point of forcing Gus to let him make the drug batches. He is so confident and determined. Which is why I think Gus was persuaded later to hire Walter, is because that is the first time he saw Gale in total loss of his confidence against Walt's baby blue.

      What's awesome about BCS is how much context it provides for why Gus went against his instincts and hired Walt. From BB we think it's just the 3% argument, but in BCS we see how much effort and money went into making that underground lab and how much bad history he had with the Salamancas (who were Walt's first major distributor). Gus invested so much getting ready to dominate the meth market with the lab and Gale as his secret weapon, but out of nowhere came Heisenberg's product being sold by his enemies. I think before the 3% scene, Gus was getting ready to get rid of Walt. Gale convinced Gus to basically acquire the product so he planned to let Gale learn from Walt then get rid of him but we know how well that went.

Gus only decided to have Gale replace the duo after Walter acted recklessly

That's why he had his own counterplan to kill Gale whenever he was under threat.

    In bb, gus went against his better judgement of trusting walt and decided to do business with him. I mean part of it is always about money, but seeing this scene it adds more context to it, guard had been grooming gale which mean he had always wanted a legit chemist to cook superior product. Then comes walt with something that is even better than what gale makes. It's not so far fetched to assume gus is also an idealist. He wanted superior quality both for his chicken and his drugs.

      Also Jesse’s purity was pretty much the same as Gale’s during season 4. And Jesse is a decently fast learner and could probably eventually get it to 98-99% with time (remember Gale said it would take him a few months to get to Walt’s level).
