I wouldn’t be able to get past the honeycombing on the back of the calf. Filson has just become one of those companies. They have only a handful of products which are priced appropriately

Buy their stuff on eBay. It's half price or better, and it is the older line, which is higher quality than the current line. Stains and moth holes are a good thing. They mean discounts.
Another great video...As a subscriber and LONG time Filson customer (30 plus years) - who owns a horse farm - I too am confused about Filson's Customer - or at least who they are targeting. I still love their Tin Cloth and Mackinaw Wool items and we own a TON of it, along with their luggage and briefcases. Those item rarely disappoint. I laughed when you used the Range Rover Reference. We have owned a LOT of vehicles over the years but we have settled on Lexus and Toyota usually. We love the Land Cruisers and to me LC are similar to the OLD Filson. The Land Cruiser is a 90K dollar vehicle that does not try to impress with looks...it JUST PERFORMS. We've actually had Range Rovers (it has been 25 - 30 years ago) and they are comfortable and look great...everyone knows you are driving an expensive vehicle. However we've found that there is no comparison to the Land Cruiser and a Range Rover...one (LC) is unassuming, tough and dependable and a great value (even though the price is high) and the other (RR) is flashy, good out of the gate but not as tough as it looks. That to me is the difference in Filson today and Filson of yesterday (with a FEW exceptions).

I''ve been willing invest in heritage or heirloom clothing and gear and the brands that make styles that fit me will continue to get my money and I won't look back. Same, I stick with Duluth. They seem to be one of the only hardwearing clothing companies that can fit me. Even though I'm a big fan of Filson's aesthetic!
I just bought a pair of Kimes raw Dillon jeans for $99.00. and these were the most expensive pair of jeans I have ever bought! They are good, but for 55 bucks, my George Strait Wranglers are hard to beat!! Thanks for a great video Carl! BTW, my Nick's Bison's are wearing absolutely outstanding!! They are my favorite boots right now! Beating the heck out of my brand new Truman's!

I’ve had nice selvedge denim and I liked it but you can’t beat a good pair of wranglers. I spent 150 on 5 pair of wrangler slim boot retro’s 10 years ago and only one has gotten to beat up to wear and it was my own fault plasma cutting. But the rest look awesome. By the darkest blues and just wear them to pieces. Maybe up north you need thicker denim but not here in Texas.

Wrangler and Levi's for me. I am not that fru fru about jeans. If I am going to drop dollars I do on fine clothing and in the case of workwear , I like the expensive and durable shoes which actually DO last and fulfil a use. Carhart for jackets and other workwear is 1000% logical.

Filson was a company I bought from 20 years ago before the Fossil Hucksters bought it and made it for tech hipsters who pay premium prices for “imported” goods. Tellason made the original Filson Jeans in 2009ish or 2010. Those were from Cone USA Denim (rip). Get some Tellason Ankara in your waist size-free hems. Never look back.
Sadly you’re correct. Brentwood associates and Bedrock Manufacturing Co have made a bloody mess of Filson. I appreciate the fact that they keep the core products unchanged and made in the US, but $135 for an imported short is insane.

Real "First World Problems" here. $165 -$205 for a pair of jeans? No way. I have a hard time with $50. Jeans are not dress clothes, they are work and casual clothing. I did buy a pair of Nick's "Carl Murawski Specials", but boots are different ;-) Still waiting on the Nick's...
Good review. These jeans make no sense. I own some filson bags. They're great, but I would stay away from their jeans. Fake honeycombs are just stupid. Jeans are clearly not their forte. I agree, go with Brave Star or Telleson. They source better fabrics and understand the heritage much better. Thanks.
I think the bigger problem here is that there is no pair of Filson jeans that come even close to 150 bucks these days, they frikkin START at like 200 hey. So yeah, definitely for the passionate Filson fan rather than the highest quality denim chaser.
Went to the filson store, and I was absolutely shocked when I took a look at their jeans, not at the price, that’s just expected but wow they felt soooo cheap. I mean they were paper thin they didn’t even feel like jeans.
I saw them in the Boston Filson store when they first released, almost bought the selvedge ones but couldn't justify it having just bought some Tellasons

I work in filson and it works. And I’m not the Range Rover class I’m to poor to buy cheap and if you’re the boss or a one man show the class of the work wear will pay for it’s self.
I have been wearing selvedge denim for over 25 years and own about 75 pairs. Worked in the denim/garment industry for over 20 years (No I do not own any Filsons). However, I have been at the stores in Portland and Seattle and personally inspected their jeans and quickly came to the conclusion that there are nothing special. No all selvedge are made the same. It all starts with a quality organic cotton and natural organic indigo. Those two pair with great patternmaking and precision stitching and your are for a treat! I do enjoy my Filson hats!

I cannot believe that you mentioned Origin denim. I know them because of BJJ gi and their gi are tier 1. I was on the fence on their denim jeans though.
@@CarlMurawski I just came back from a Filson store and tried on the selvedged denim jeans. At 14 oz, they're thick and stiff as hell. I have bought some good denim jeans but these were not worth $255 IMO.
I have had the high end jeans but recently looking at well made decent weight at a decent price, but build quality must be there. Look at Kitanica jeans. I will say build quality is very good and materials are about middle of the road. Still enjoying my Jean Shop heavy Selvedge rockers.
I love the look and durability of the heritage clothing but I don't feel the need to fit into a box. My Tin cloth cruiser looks great with an Under Armour running hoody underneath. F'em
I tried on a pair of the railsplitter selvedge recently. Looked and felt great. But the '33 fixed inseam was the dealbreaker: might be too short post firstwash.
Ahh overpriced, best part of these is the Zipper which should’ve been Buttons and the Pocket Bags. Good review as always, I certainly won’t buy these I think for the price a Pair Of Jcrew Selvedge is a Better option at this price point
I think your jeans were pre-worn, maybe returned. Mine had none of this and were actually pretty stiff and new feeling. Mine were also $145 in the store, so maybe they dropped the price.
I purchased a pair of Filson double layer duck work pants. Paid $180. They are good pants but not any better than Carhartt or Duluth. I wouldn’t purchase again.

I don't know if this has been asked, but have you reviewed Round House Jeans? They stated they are made in the USA with US cotton. Plus they are about 50 bucks a pair.
Never had a Filson. Never will. Just another overseas company trying to milk every cent out of their customers and product. Try brave star. Us made in Cali. Half the price.

Coming from someone who owns several products from them, it's a bit funky when trying to navigate the company. On one hand, they offer tough as nails products like the Mackinaw Cruiser or the Tin Cloth products. Made in the US charging a premium price...with imported materials with little way of finding out where it's from. Stuff that people could take pride in owning and using. In the very same vein, they have the lines that takes full advantage of the name offering a mediocre product, made overseas. Clearly made to dupe people unaware of the lines reputation or their only concern is for the name.
Yeah, it’s too bad. This tends to happen with brands that have positive name recognition. Think of North Face. Hopefully they’ll always keep those cornerstone products which have historically been great.
Not for me I buy for quality and USA made, if I can get better cheaper there is no point. I have 2 pairs of origin on order just waiting on them it's been about 5 weeks so far.
Dearborn and Roundhouse are reputable companies that have 100 percent USA jeans at reasonable prices. They vary from around forty to eighty bucks depending on what style you choose. I can see myself paying forty for work jeans made in the USA. Filson has good stuff but 165 for denim woven in Viet Nam is a no go. I'd rather find a small producer from my local area or buy Japanese jeans if I'm going above fifty bucks looking to make a fashion statement. Heck 10 to 15 dollar Costco Jeans are all I need for something to play in the mud.
Awesome video! I ordered a custom pair of Northern Trading Co boots 5 months ago and can’t even get a response from the company. I know they are real or you wouldn’t have done a video but this is very frustrating to spend $400 on something and can’t even get an update.
Damn. I’ve heard a lot of shady stuff about them lately and it’s really bothering me. They were amazing to me, but they also knew I was making a video. I’ve heard a lot about delays and bad customer service which makes me really uneasy. They did a terrific job, but I’m really concerned about the feedback I’m hearing. Sorta on topic... I've wanted Filson Tin Pants for a while now, but have held off because you're not supposed to wash them. The wobbly bits have a habit of sweating up a storm during periods of exertion. This, coupled with the occasional expulsion of vapors, or God forbid a shart... have led me to the conclusion that they're not for me. Are they intended to be worn until they take on a life of their own?
Don't have them myself but know people who do, you can't wash them but they will give themselves a spray down with the power washer when they're cleaning the house
What's your end goal for them? Really they're a wet winter work pant, made for long john weather and snow, not really a fashion piece. They make tin cloth chaps, and I've been seriously considering getting a pair for upland bird hunting.
I used to wear the double tin pants working as a logger, I had a bottle of colloidal silver I spritzed the crotch with once a week and would spray them with the hose occasionally, they are great for specific types of work or hunting but not for "casual" wear.

I've gotten by for a long time using heavy duck pants (Nomex in the Forest Service) with Patagonia longs under & North Face Gore-Tex over. I don't rock much in the way of fashion! Ha! I do agree that Filson is confuse about this jeans as they are putting it in a category. Seems like Filson is experimenting with denim and their inexperienced is showing. Let's not overthink it. FIlson is an outdoor / traveler brand. If the products they make can be used for work, that is good. Whoever the designer and technical designer for this jeans needs to be check and train. Why make a 33" and 34" inseam. That is absolutely stupid. Filson should have make it 34" inseam for small size and 36" or 28" for larger sizes. Also, for the whiskers, that is on the designer fault beacause they tell the factory where to put the whiskers and distress. Selvedge jeans is overrated as putting of the self edge is to make sure the yarns do not unravel on the sides. Alsip, it is not a mark of high quality jeans. It just so happens that looms and machines have shorter width for making selvedge jeans. The mark of high quality denim are the dyes and the cotton.
Carl, end the madness and try "Levi's Men's 550 Relaxed Fit Jeans" in "Black Waterless" on Amazon. They are 40 bucks. I was a denim head for years, Iron Heart, LVC, all the great Japanese brands, and these are the best I have worn in terms of comfort, durability, and bang for buck.
I’m considering becoming Filson-free. I have a waxed jacket and a mackinaw wool hat and honestly I’m not really impressed at this point. A bunch of their crap is not great and they’re becoming another company that MEANT something but that doesn’t MEAN anything.
Me and Jeans. Head to thrift store, find a pair of 501’s or 505’s that are nicely broken in with honeycombs and creases, pay my $9.50 and let sucker hipsters fork over $100’s for selvedge denim.
My biggest gripe with filson, is the fact that they are slowly becoming an outsourcing company. They idolize themselves for being American. But everything they’ve released in the past year is made in Bangladesh or Sri Lanka, other than a pair of 250$+ knitted mittens ?!? But seriously, they are still asking American made prices for products made in Bangladesh by child slaves. Bangladesh is rated the absolute worst country in the world in terms of clothing producers. Items are so cheap there that even China outsources to Bangladesh to open sweatshops and slave labor.
Filson makes clothing now for millennial trash that likes to pretend they’re doing work 😂 Even circa 2000, Filson was making hardcore stuff. Now they have about 6 products they haven’t ruined. Give them a minute and they’ll get to them too.

If you want another affordable option for jeans that are made in America look at Texas Jeans. They're around $30.

I’m an LL Bean guy. Best value in my opinion. You said it perfectly when you said these jeans are for Filson fans.
Yes, absolutely! LL Bean flannels are some of my favorite. We also have their flannel sheets for the kids and they love them.

@@CarlMurawski I just came back from a Filson store and tried on the selvedged denim jeans. At 14 oz, they're thick and stiff as hell. I have bought some good denim jeans but these were not worth $255 IMO.
I have had the high end jeans but recently looking at well made decent weight at a decent price, but build quality must be there. Look at Kitanica jeans. I will say build quality is very good and materials are about middle of the road. Still enjoying my Jean Shop heavy Selvedge rockers.
Imogene + Willie makes good jeans, and some other clothing.
I love the look and durability of the heritage clothing but I don't feel the need to fit into a box. My Tin cloth cruiser looks great with an Under Armour running hoody underneath.

I tried on a pair of the railsplitter selvedge recently. Looked and felt great. But the '33 fixed inseam was the dealbreaker: might be too short post firstwash.
Ahh overpriced, best part of these is the Zipper which should’ve been Buttons and the Pocket Bags. Good review as always, I certainly won’t buy these I think for the price a Pair Of Jcrew Selvedge is a Better option at this price point
I think your jeans were pre-worn, maybe returned. Mine had none of this and were actually pretty stiff and new feeling. Mine were also $145 in the store, so maybe they dropped the price.
I purchased a pair of Filson double layer duck work pants. Paid $180. They are good pants but not any better than Carhartt or Duluth. I wouldn’t purchase again.

I don't know if this has been asked, but have you reviewed Round House Jeans? They stated they are made in the USA with US cotton. Plus they are about 50 bucks a pair.

Coming from someone who owns several products from them, it's a bit funky when trying to navigate the company.
On one hand, they offer tough as nails products like the Mackinaw Cruiser or the Tin Cloth products. Made in the US charging a premium price...with imported materials with little way of finding out where it's from. Stuff that people could take pride in owning and using.
In the very same vein, they have the lines that takes full advantage of the name offering a mediocre product, made overseas. Clearly made to dupe people unaware of the lines reputation or their only concern is for the name.
Yeah, it’s too bad. This tends to happen with brands that have positive name recognition. Think of North Face. Hopefully they’ll always keep those cornerstone products which have historically been great.
Not for me I buy for quality and USA made, if I can get better cheaper there is no point. I have 2 pairs of origin on order just waiting on them it's been about 5 weeks so far.
Dearborn and Roundhouse are reputable companies that have 100 percent USA jeans at reasonable prices. They vary from around forty to eighty bucks depending on what style you choose. I can see myself paying forty for work jeans made in the USA. Filson has good stuff but 165 for denim woven in Viet Nam is a no go. I'd rather find a small producer from my local area or buy Japanese jeans if I'm going above fifty bucks looking to make a fashion statement. Heck 10 to 15 dollar Costco Jeans are all I need for something to play in the mud.

Awesome video! I ordered a custom pair of Northern Trading Co boots 5 months ago and can’t even get a response from the company. I know they are real or you wouldn’t have done a video but this is very frustrating to spend $400 on something and can’t even get an update.
Damn. I’ve heard a lot of shady stuff about them lately and it’s really bothering me. They were amazing to me, but they also knew I was making a video. I’ve heard a lot about delays and bad customer service which makes me really uneasy.

I've wanted Filson Tin Pants for a while now, but have held off because you're not supposed to wash them.
The wobbly bits have a habit of sweating up a storm during periods of exertion. This, coupled with the occasional expulsion of vapors, or God forbid a shart... have led me to the conclusion that they're not for me.
Are they intended to be worn until they take on a life of their own?
Don't have them myself but know people who do, you can't wash them but they will give themselves a spray down with the power washer when they're cleaning the house
What's your end goal for them? Really they're a wet winter work pant, made for long john weather and snow, not really a fashion piece. They make tin cloth chaps, and I've been seriously considering getting a pair for upland bird hunting.
I used to wear the double tin pants working as a logger, I had a bottle of colloidal silver I spritzed the crotch with once a week and would spray them with the hose occasionally, they are great for specific types of work or hunting but not for "casual" wear.
Just powerwash them as needed

I do agree that Filson is confuse about this jeans as they are putting it in a category. Seems like Filson is experimenting with denim and their inexperienced is showing. Let's not overthink it. FIlson is an outdoor / traveler brand. If the products they make can be used for work, that is good.
Whoever the designer and technical designer for this jeans needs to be check and train. Why make a 33" and 34" inseam. That is absolutely stupid. Filson should have make it 34" inseam for small size and 36" or 28" for larger sizes. Also, for the whiskers, that is on the designer fault beacause they tell the factory where to put the whiskers and distress.
Selvedge jeans is overrated as putting of the self edge is to make sure the yarns do not unravel on the sides. Alsip, it is not a mark of high quality jeans. It just so happens that looms and machines have shorter width for making selvedge jeans. The mark of high quality denim are the dyes and the cotton.

Carl, end the madness and try "Levi's Men's 550 Relaxed Fit Jeans" in "Black Waterless" on Amazon. They are 40 bucks. I was a denim head for years, Iron Heart, LVC, all the great Japanese brands, and these are the best I have worn in terms of comfort, durability, and bang for buck.

My biggest gripe with filson, is the fact that they are slowly becoming an outsourcing company. They idolize themselves for being American. But everything they’ve released in the past year is made in Bangladesh or Sri Lanka, other than a pair of 250$+ knitted mittens ?!? But seriously, they are still asking American made prices for products made in Bangladesh by child slaves. Bangladesh is rated the absolute worst country in the world in terms of clothing producers. Items are so cheap there that even China outsources to Bangladesh to open sweatshops and slave labor.

For these jeans, I would absolutely agree. For Mackinaw wool items, Tin Cloth, waxed cotton stuff, and many of their bags, the upcharge is worthwhile.
