If you ever find yourself in a predicament, where you need a lot of lumber like that, you can go to the “pro desk/commercial sales” tell them what you are doing and you can buy all of the materials at once and then go back and pick up what you need whenever you need it (as well as still pick out every board you want). It will be a bulk order and will typically save you about 15% doing it that way. Also, if you go to a company that supplies shingles to all of the contractors Instead you can usually get away with about 40% off then the big box stores. Doing it this way I was able to build a 20 x 24 two-story (bonus room) shop for $6500.
IF you buy a job from HD and don't take delivery of everything at once, make sure you double check that they are allocating your draws correctly. It can get troublesome when the high school girl, who knows nothing, doesn't.
Garage door struts are also used for weight counter balancing. You need to leave that tension until the struts are installed.
So at 200k sub you getting a HVAC for the shop lol.
Crazy!! My buddy just built a 60ish by 120ish garage built for $85,000 including 6”concrete (with 8” for his lift). Brick 1/2 way up then vinyl to match his house. He has metal roofing on the roof and matching on the barn. He went with four 16 ft tall doors. All of this was done by a contractor. He never lifted a finger. This is his third build like this. We will do his electrical and plumbing though. That’s the easy part. I get the HOA thing. That sucks. Texas is so much more expensive than other states.

Post frame I’m assuming? Red iron is way more expensive than stick framing or post frame
I'm sure he built a pole barn that alone has like 1/4 of the materials and labor. Pole barns aren't the best and very cheap to build
I am doing a very similar 36' x 60' shop (red steel frame with OSB/zip sharing in CO (ZIP was only 20% more than Forcefield). Steel was a bit more expensive at the time @$45k, but contractors wanted $11k to erect. Foundation $ is close. I was quoted $30k just to shingle the roof. Just like you I did everything myself starting with the rod and working down. Awesome to see such a similar uncommon project.

You're killing it man. I've got a 40x60 in West Texas that I've been finishing out for the past couple of years. Knowing what goes into working on it, it's pretty impressive that you've taken it all on without having the initial building skills.
Very nice build. Excellent that you went and got deals and didn't just throw more and more money at the thing like so many people, businesses and especially municipal and state governments do. Property value just went up by 100 grand too. No idea what your HOA and city codes are like, but if at all possible, you should put in water and gas service to the shop since you are trenching anyway. It'll be far cheaper to do both of those now along with the electrical rather than at some later date. It's also more money, but putting in a sewer line if you can will allow for a rest room in the shop in the future or at least a wash and clean station out there. I suppose you could put in an underground holding tank for just a sink. Some city codes just assume that if you put sewer and water to a shop you'll use it for residential occupancy so some times it can be tricky. But having a toilet and sinks in there is a nice upgrade in the future if you put in the lines now while you are building. That's a huge shop with plenty of space to put in a raised floor restroom, even a shower and definitely a big clean up sink. I can't tell you how often I get in trouble for coming in from the shop and cleaning up in the kitchen sink or bathroom sink and leaving a mess in there. Would also love to see you build a loft or mezzanine space in one end of that massive shop for storage and even for dedicating to your youtube channel. Having a man cave within a man cave is so nice! Can't wait to see how you put this big shop to use in your future videos. I can't wait to see the bench builds and the new hoist installation and all the interior stuff you are going to do with it. I've got a 30X30 shop and am running out of space already.

X2, I ran 2 extras (1") to my garage. Fiber optic came through this spring. I ran it under ground to the garage into the garage and through a spare conduct to the house. Wish I had ran a couple irrigation lines too, for a hose bib.
I remember watching years ago, a rear block install video and a muffler cut off video. So cool to see the channel progress!!! Keep it coming!
This has been my favorite shop build video! I plan on doing one myself when we move out of the neighborhood we are in. And this has given me probably way more confidence than it should have! Shop is looking great man!

Just a suggestion on the exterior. I’ve seen Kyle from RR buildings use versetta stone I’d contact them and find out what they can do for you on the project. Could possibly be some big savings and considering I assume from following along the series the learning curve will be much much steeper and time consuming doing actual stone over a similar product you can install in a couple days
And not like the brand matters just that style of “stone” siding.

You can get TP (tamper proof) hinges if you are concerned about the side door entrance. Although thieves are usually not that smart and would likely just break a window if they did try to get in, I don't know if it is necessary but it would give you peace of mind. LOve the shop, you are doing a great job with it.

The thing is massive it looks really good and knowing a little of construction I thought it was going to cost you more it looks good man sweat and tears will be worth it for this one
Still heck of a value vs. paying for a full build. Congrats so far. I do look forward to these videos. Hopefully the city gets in gear. I know my bigger hold up was the local electrical co-op and getting them to plan out and route power (which cost a bit). and INSPECTIONS... jeez, felt like crap on that. even technically failed one because the county didn't define which inspection was which. Also the same with cosmetic cracks, but also the same, would like to seal / coat it in the future.

The shop is coming along nicely, the learning and gaining experience is priceless! I'm on the final stages of my shop. We got all the lifts installing and working great. Direct build is the way to go if you have the time that is what I have always said plus if you have the perseverance. You are unreal, given you work with your entire family around the place you get lucky. You can understand the cost savings cos you want to spend it on them cos I am like that too. But when I get a quote and hear the triple digits I want to puke I dissect it piece by piece and lo and behold it is a third of the cost just what you are doing now. So well done for achieving what you have for less that 1/3 of the original quote.....can't wait for the final costings to see if they are under 50% which I think they will be, anything is better that the original 380K

Between the building and the lifts, I am surprised that you didn’t opt for, or somebody didn’t make you do 6 inch concrete, instead of 4 inch concrete. I personally wouldn’t have put something like that up without doing 6 inch.

I assume u have already thought of this, but if u hadn’t run some dedicated lower voltage lines for security cameras. U could get fancy and do some POE and have a dedicated network inside ur shop. Food for thought 👍

It's amazing how much you don DIY.
I have no cracks in my concrete and we poured on the day of the Calfor Fire here in CA and it was 110deg out! Could not see in the smoke’ not one crack! Massive garage build too! Cracks are unacceptable no expansion joints not a deep enough pour it’s all for looks! My footers are 4/5 feet deep!
I would probably have looked into buying a piece of that field behind or permanently lease/get a right of way to build on it.
That way, you could have built a steel building and not cared about any pesky rules on looks.
A permanent lease/right of way for a building is most often cheaper than buying the land. You don't need a surveyor and all that or register it the same way. Just the separation of land is often the expensive part when cutting of small pieces of land.
If you add labor and about 30 percent to each of the items you performed plus a 10-20 percent GC markup is how you get to 344K
LOVED THE RECAP and ttl $$$$$ cost summary - I've watched all the build videos to date and thoroughly enjoyed the highlights and summary video - long time subscriber, but you will get to 200K based on your content very soon....great mix of your passions and a great mix of different, but all RELATABLE content - keep up the great work and the shop LOOKS AMAZING to date. I predict there is a mortar mixer and trowel in your immediate future!
some pretty large cracks in the concrete floor already and not even at the saw cut lines so either the saw cut lines wherent deep enough to snap there or the ground wasent compacted enough or you have water going under the slab and washing dirt out

just a idea for the brick is a brick veneer that's installed with a metal grid system screwed to the wall and brick gers glued then just grouted . goes very fast . it's being used on a job I'm working on .

Reason why it cracked its not the temp, it is because you didnt tarp over it or use curing compound on it to allow it to cure properly and not have the water evaporate as fast. Concrete cracks due to chemical reaction which creates heat inside the concrete not due to external temps. Just FYI for future.

Outswing doors have a tamper proof hinge that the pin can only be removed when the door is in the open position. Can’t be removed when in the closed position.

Outswing doors should have a secured pin. If yours don't you can just change the hinges. Far less work and cost.
About that side door. Could you cut that back out and rotate it 180 degrees? That would fix the whole hinge issue, and might change the direction the door would swing out too?
The concrete has to be atleast 6 inches thick for a lift your 4 inch won't support one or 2 lol
Pretty sure he did like 8" in 2 spots for future lifts

The Slab is because of the nightmare that happened in Frisco and Allen. Foundation repairs on 3 out of 4 homes in some areas. Cracks are very normal in the foundation, and those are considered no big deal here in TX. When you're done, you can come build me the same shop in Fredericksburg. They want 2.5X your original quote here.
Save money. Turn door around hinges inside. But it will swing inward now.

Is the house real brick or a veneer? Either way, can you get a way with a veneer siding for the garage. They close so much like real brick these days and are almost as durable. I know the installation will be faster, CHEAPER (not sure which would be more important) can look almost like the house. I hope you can use it to save time, I want to see the finished project, almost as much as you neighbors do. lol. Great work, you prove that this is possible for almost anyone. I was most surprised at the cost of the foundation and concrete work, of course you were wise enough to hire professionals. Many people don't realize that the concrete companies will charge you if you take more than about 30 minutes per truck to unload which can be more expensive than hiring workers, especially if the truck waiting has to dump the load before it spoils. If he dumps the load to avoid it hardening in the truck, he dumps it on your jobsite and you have to get rid of the concrete later.
Could have avoided those cracks by using concrete cure by Medcure. We use it all the time!
The concrete is the killer. Making awesome progress for the money though.
Great job so far! I love someone not afraid of work and the ability to pull the trigger. Interestingly built! But I don't see a thing wrong with it. Did I get an insinuation that you are going to try to lay the brick? No offence, but I am 58 and retired from the Masonry business. I started going to work with my dad as a very young child. If I had a Nickle for every time I heard a customer say "that looks so easy" I could have given you the money to build the garage. Before when I said something about your ability to pull the trigger I take it back! lol My wife is a Clinical Pharm D. I think she is a doctor, I am not smart enough to know. Anyway she followed my dad like a puppy who did most of the brick work on our house While I did everything else. I will never forget. My dad left the center brick out of the last hearth. My wife walked in on a Saturday morning and asked why he didn't lay the last brick. My dad told he it was hers to lay since it "looked so easy" 50,000 times! He went out and came back with a bucket of mortar and a trowel. We walked off and did other things. Her nails are never NOT manicured, hair permed makeup etc. We came back about an hour later and she had mortar from her knees up, rolling with sweat and crying. lol She would not stop, the mortar had set up on her and the fireplace. My dad grabbed another brick and a shovel with mortar and slapped it in an less than 30 seconds. She hugged him crying and apologizing for demeaning his trade and how difficult it really is. We calmed he down and had a good laugh. Unless you can buy your brick in a face and corners only and put it on over metal lathe, like tile and then grout the joints I don't recommend. Then again, if you have a LOT of time... Good luck young man! I'll keep watching!

Texas must have cheap flack low PSI concrete!
